We bought our condo 6 years ago and knew we wanted to make some changes to the kitchen and master bath. We talked to a lot of friends and neighbors to try to find the right designer/contractor and procrastinated. This spring we finally made the leap and are so glad we did. Maughan Design was wonderful and exceeded our high expectations. Kudos to Crystal, Darryl, Scottie, Matt, and Brian.  Close and clear communication  Understood our taste and planned with that in mind  Good suggestions; wish we had listened to all of them  Handled all the bureaucratic maze with the condo board, management company, and the city  Did not change the footprint of our rooms, but the remodel yielded substantially more functional space, more storage, more accessible, and more attractive  Minimized inconvenience; only one day without water in the kitchen; cleaned up every night to minimize the obvious dirt and chaos  Assured that subcontractors (carpenter, plumber, glass people, tile people, painters) were top notch and met user friendly and quality standards  Crews were always pleasant and prompt, talented, and went the extra mile  Everyone made clear that they wanted to make sure everything was perfect  After completion, small problems (appliances and tile) were addressed quickly and completely The project was finished on time and on budget. We couldn’t be more satisfied and would recommend Maughan without reservations.

This is the second time we have used their services for a remodel. I love how Kathie takes the time to get to know you and what you are aiming for. The work so far is lovely - as the project is still ongoing - rain has delayed outside work. They were diligent in maintaining the cleanliness of the project as we were still living in the house. They are punctual and we love the work! I would recommend them for your project. We will use them again to assist with one more project on our house.

Finding a contractor is hard enough but our goal was to remotely remodel our cabin kitchen while we were in our home on the opposite coast. Friends and family said we were nuts. But we found Maughan Design! Kathie and her team did a complete kitchen remodel on our dated cabin kitchen as well as some other updates in the cabin. Kathie walked us through all the steps of this complete redesign. She helped us pick colors, finishes, flooring, appliances cabinet design and placement, every aspect of a new kitchen. She did this through numerous phone conferences, samples, websites and photos, keeping us up to date every step of the way. We could not be happier with the outcome. It exceeds all our expectations. Kathie made things go very smoothly. She listened to all my ideas and concerns and made suggestions that greatly improved on my initial concept. The workmanship of her team is top notch. I was thrilled when we arrived and walked into my brand new, spanking clean, beautiful kitchen. I have been using the kitchen now for two seasons and still am as thrilled as I was the first time I saw it.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen redesign, tear down and rebuild plus miscellaneous repairs including bathroom flooring.

Could not have been worse, She charges by the hour based on hourly rates for her staff. She showed me typical charges for what appeared to me much larger jobs. They were mostly $5000 to $7000. If we had paid her all she asked for it would have been over $12,000. Her plans kept veering away from our desires because she said things we wanted done could not be done. We wanted a tub removed, she said it could only be partly removed. Her plumber was wrong. She said we would have to open the ceiling in the commons area of our condo to get to plumbing parts. This turned out to be untrue. She said she probably could not guarantee a totally flat entry into the shower, it depended on what they found. This was also untrue. She said tumbled marble would be too expensive. We got the tumbled marble and the construction price was finally, with another company, exactly what she quoted. In general I would say she did not have the professional qualifications to do our job. And the way things kept changing as we got further into the plan made her work very suspect to say the least.
Description of Work: Provide a plan to remodel our condo bathroom. The remodel was complex as we needed a flat floor entry into our shower as my spouse has poor balance and cannot step over a curb into a shower. Kathiie was aware of this issue. Very difficult because the floor of the unit was on prestressed concrete and drilling into it and the steel cables within it could be risky in terms of the structural integrity of the building.

Our first meeting with Kathie included an extensive interview ranging from how we use the space to how we make decisions. This set us up for success. Kathie and her crew were professional and responsive throughout the project, timely and neat. Kathie followed the project closely and kept in touch with us on a regular basis. The completed kitchen is both beautiful and functional and we are thrilled with the result.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen/dining remodel including completely new plumbing, gas and electric, custom cabinets and counters, doors, in floor heat and tile etc. The room was gutted and redone. Project included design and remodel with the designer acting as the general contractor.

Working with Kathie at Maughan Design was a great experience. I have worked with many designers over the years in my residences and rentals. She is, by far the BEST!!. She listened to MY desires and took her time at my consultation. Kathie is very professional, friendly and really has a knack for picking out paint colors. She wants YOU to be happy and just love your surroundings. Kathie followed up with me before and after my painting project, to ensure that I was happy with the color selections. I throughly enjoyed the entire process and can't wait to work with Kathie and her team at Maughan Design for my next kitchen remodel.

The plans are beautiful. According to Kathie you have to go to CAD to get an accurate picture of the cost of your remodel. Make sure that you have LOTS of money sitting around.
Description of Work: We hired Kathie to plan our kitchen. We got a plan that was 2 times the budget we had specified. We now are the proud owners of a gray binder of plans for what our kitchen would look like if we had twice the money we wanted to spend.

Response from MAUGHAN DESIGN INC
Members are good people, and this was truly a regrettable ending to our second project together. As usual, there are two sides to a story like this one. At our first meeting we discussed typical budgets, as we always do. These costs are often a sticker shock, and this was no exception. The amount they wanted to spend was not realistic for the work they envisioned, so together we discussed remodeling their kitchen in stages, starting with their island and range areas, so they could upgrade with nicer finishes while staying within budget. It is really important to note that Member kept the role of selecting most of her own materials to save the cost of designer assistance. Our role was to put together a functional plan, detail how the finishes would go together, and to create construction documents for the project. We met with Member, usually without Member, several times over the next few months, creating layout ideas and reviewing her material selections. These were expensive choices – and we told her so! Among them were custom bamboo cabinets and terrazzo quartz countertops. We advised Member to consider alternative materials and recommended maple cabinets and a more common granite counter. She declined to make changes in every instance, because her heart was set on the things she loved. We absolutely did educate her on the differences in cost, and told her that she was exceeding her original budget goal. But no one actually said “Put the terrazzo down and step slowly away!”  Because at the end of the day, it’s our role to equip our clients with the information they need to make their choices - not to tell them they can’t have what they want. We educate, make recommendations, and help to navigate the tricky balance between budget constraints and what the things they want to live with actually cost. But material selections aside, an even bigger contributor to their increased budget was that very shortly into the project, Member abandoned the partial kitchen plan idea. By the end of the first draft, the kitchen had all new materials planned and most appliances relocated. There were even cabinets planned for new areas adjacent to the kitchen, and the utility room became involved. Almost all of these changes were requested by the client as we considered together how she would use her new space. There is a common-sense responsibility for any client to make choices according to their own budget goals. If you ask us to include three times the scope, your costs will not fit within a half-kitchen budget. And with high-end finishes, of course they are not going to be even close. We presented two alternative budget options to show Member the savings available with the less expensive materials. The difference between the cost of the terrazzo quartz tops that Member chose and the granite we recommended for their budget was over $5,000 alone! Finally, in an attempt to render excellent service in a difficult situation, we even created a third budget option for Member to be able to purchase materials through us at substantial discount and oversee part of their own construction process – a proposal that could have actually met their original budget goals even with the triple-sized scope – but which they declined to pursue. There is always value in the lessons to be learned when things go wrong. After working with Member, we have put two new policies in place to protect future clients and ourselves from any budget misunderstandings. 1. We have printed detailed contract budgets from several projects over the past few years, and we now share these with new clients at our first meeting to ensure that everyone’s expectations are aligned from the beginning. 2. When there are two decision makers, but only one can attend most of our meetings, we now make sure we are sharing meeting notes and emails with both parties so any important decisions can be discussed early in the process. We highly value the many wonderful clients who have been the foundation of our success over our 17 years in business. We also welcome the constructive feedback we need to continually improve, and will always seek to serve every client well.

Work product generally okay after several redoes and redesigns. Significant promises on how project will go are not followed through. Makes excuses for poor workmanship and suggests homeowner is being too picky. Drags home owner into arguments with sub-contractors. Forced flooring contractor to continue with installation against their advice, net effect is rework of hardwood floors is necessary. Several instances of installations of poor design and immediate disintegration of product, for example, cabinets. Begins charging $100 an hour for short phone conversations when things do not go well.

Response from MAUGHAN DESIGN INC
It is walking a fine line to respond to criticism without disparaging the critic, which is something we never want to do. Fortunately after posting here, this homeowner called an independent authority - the Oregon Construction Contractors' Board - lodging a complaint concerning many of these allegations and seeking several thousands of dollars in compensation. Of the approximately one dozen concerns presented, the independent review by the building department itself found all but one to be without merit. The sole remaining concern, a hardwood floor that began to cup a few months after installation, was an obvious sub-contractor defect. We immediately offered a credit for the work to be repaired, which the homeowner accepted. To answer one additional allegation, we do not charge to address our customers' concerns. We are a design & remodel company and we bill hourly for developing a design. Our remodeling work is by fixed price contract. We also have never offered any service at a $100 per hour rate.Additional rebuttals could be made, point by point, but there is no way to do that graciously. Hopefully this has given our potential clients enough information to form their own opinions. We hope you will take a moment to visit us at our website where you will find a number of testimonials from clients who have found us to be caring, competent and professional - and have written to tell us so. We've been in business since 1995 and we're proud that many of our clients have chosen to work with us on multiple projects over the years. We have excellent references to provide upon request. Sincerely,Kathie Maughan Francis Principal Maughan Design, Inc.
