Tom came to my house to provide consultation on my desire to add a dormer to my house upstairs. Before I even proceeded with any plans I wanted to know if it would be feasible from a structural standpoint. We discussed what I had in mind, and Tom pointed out what would need to be done, and various options to do it (since load distribution would change, I'd need to add a structural ridge vent and transfer the load to the foundation somehow). In the end I decided not to do a dormer, as it would be too expensive and problematic. My house just doesn't lend itself well to an added dormer. Later when I decided to work within the existing space, I again consulted with Tom to determine if I'd need to add collar ties (no, it turns out). Tom's consulting was really money well spent. I can proceed with my remodel plans knowing I explored the options, made an informed decision, and am good to go with what I've spec'ed out. Tom also has a good sense of humor and was easy to talk with.
