Snowstorms delayed matters a few days, but the repair was completed only a couple days later than predicted, plus the new switch is sturdier than the original one on the lamp. So far, it's working great.

Description of Work: Larry was great. I had no power in my lamp and thought it needed to be rewired. It is an old mahogany lamp that I had for 20 plus years. He fixed it in a matter of minutes! No re-wiring necessary. Needed a new plug.

Did a great job rewiring two exterior lamps for our 1930's home. It took a little longer than I would have hoped, but it looks like they get a lot of business and I can see why - great job!

It takes about three weeks for a lamp to be finished. I was in no hurry, so that was OK. Larry was able to fill me in on the history of a lamp I didn't know was valuable. He also helped me get the lamps (floor lamps) out of and back into my car.
Description of Work: Larry has rewired three lamps for me over the years. He is knowledgable and does quality work.

For starters, Larry said the repair would take 3 months. I said OK. Around the first of December I stopped by Larrys to see if the light was finished-he said "did I call?" I said no. He said "I will call when the light is ready" Near the middle of December he did call. The lamp seemed OK but as I used it, the switch which was a rotating wheel along the cord would not completely move between the lower wattage and a higher wattage I had to wiggle the wheel a bit to get it to stick on one wattage or the other. I thought this was somewhat dangerous and never left the light on when I was gone. Last night the light the light was flickering and I reached to the wheel to shut off the light and the wheel was very hot- like an iron. I unplugged the lamp and now am looking for somewhere else to take it to be repaired.
Description of Work: Had a lamp that just quit, had two lightbulbs and both stopped at the same time so I figured it was electrical. Dropped it off at Larrys in late September, didn't get a claim slip, he said he would call. The light was finished in December, the switch was one with a rotating wheel on the cord. This was supposed to turn the light from a lower 120 watt with the two bulbs to a higher 150 watt at the next rotation. When I picked up the light it seemed to work OK. I had checked and the max wattage for each of the light sockets was 75 watts. I used two 75 watt bulbs.

The Reason I ask "Did I call" is simple, it save's time looking. I don't recall the names of every person I do work for. And had you brought is back I would have taken care of it on the spot. I do not make the parts, and sometimes they are faulty, that happens with anything.

We left our lamp with Larry on August 5, 2010, with the arrangement that he'd call when it was ready. Even though the shop is crowded with many lamps, we thought it would be okay to leave ours because we'd had a good experience there once before. By early January of 2011 we had not heard from him but happened to be driving by so thought we'd stop to inquire (we'd moved later in August so, although we'd kept the same phone number, we thought it possible we'd missed a call from him). He asked us quite rudely when we went in, "Did I call you?" We responded that he had not but we'd thought the lamp might possibly be ready. He said, "If I didn't call you, it isn't." We found the lamp among the others in the shop and read aloud the date we'd left it. He then said he was about to start on lamps left in August so it should be ready within a few days. Again we waited several months without hearing from him. Meanwhile we'd been given the name of a really good lamp repair shop so decided to go and get our lamp and take it elsewhere. When we retrieved it on March 31, 2011, it had apparently not been touched. Larry's explanation was that it was an older lamp and he probably couldn't get parts for it. Could he not have told us that when we brought it in? Or perhaps called us later and told us? We were given Larry's name originally by a retail shop and he did do one other job for us satisfactorily. He is apparently selective about which of the hundreds of lamps he's accepted he will actually look at or work on. As another reviewer has already said, we wish retailers would stop recommending him. We are obviously not the first who have had this sort of unfortunate experience. If you have a lamp needing repair, our recommendation is that you stay far away from Larry's.
Description of Work: We brought in an older "bridge lamp" which needed repair and which also needed to have the socket and shade assembly turned around (it had been changed sometime in the past and we thought it would look better in its original configuration). Larry told us that could be done.

I left a specialty lamp with Larry in Feb. I made 2 calls to him to find out if he could repair it, but I always had to leave a message on his voice mail. He never called me back, I returned at the end of july and picked up my lamp, which he never touched. He claimed he was not able to get parts for it. When I spoke to the manufacturer, they told me most parts of the lamp are available to order, so I don't really believe Larry made a single effort to do this repair.
Description of Work: Storage was provided, though not requested.

As you noted the company said "Most" parts were available. Not all, I do my best to get the parts needed but not everything is on the shelf. As you also noted it was a "Specialty" lamp. Sadly Designers do not often consider practicality when they do their jobs, and therefore many lamps just can't be repaired unless the original parts are still being made. Your assumption that I never touched it is not true. The thing is I don't take everything apart and leave it in a pile, I try to get the parts needed, first. And yes I am backed up a great deal, I am the only guy around who works on many of these fixtures. The fact that people have sent me lamps from as far away as Las Vegas, New York and the bay area would attest to that.

I was a bit nervous about leaving the lamp with Larry because his space is so full of lamps being repaired. He assured me that it would be fine. He took down my name and telephone number. He said I didn't need a ticket. He'd call me when it was ready to be picked up. It would take,he said, about 3 weeks+ and it did. The experience went fine because I wasn't in a hurry. I could wait and I trusted him to do a careful job and to be careful with my lamp.
Description of Work: Our lamp with a handmade ceramic base about 18" high did not work. I took it to Larry's. He looked at it and told me that the wiring was so old that the lamp needed to be totally rewired. It now works!

Larry did a good job of repairing the faulty switch on our lamp. It had actually never worked quite right from the time we purchased it, even though it was an expensive lamp. We had to let over a week go by before picking it up, on account of being out of town, but it didn't seem to matter. The work was done more quickly than we expected, even though from the looks of the shop (very crowded with lamps) and from others' comments, we'd thought we might have to leave it there for weeks. In fact, he called us within 10 days.

Larry is always friendly and helpful, and very busy. It was about 30 days before the lamp was ready, but it worked when Larry was through! He also gave me advice about type of light bulbs to use with this particular lamp to avoid overloading it.
Description of Work: Larry repaired an antique brass floor lamp that wasn't working. Apparently, it had been wired with speaker wire (!) and had an outdated plug. Larry rewired the lamp, adding a new socket and brass pull chain.

Larry was rude and uncommunicative. I had to initiate all contact and he generally responded uninformatively or in monosyllables, if at all. One of the worst service encounters I've ever had.
Description of Work: I took in a halogen-bulb floor lamp that was no longer functioning. The proprietor told me it would take a month to get the necessary parts and fix it. It took four months. After the repair, the lamp worked only intermittently, but the experience was so unpleasant, I didn't make an issue of it.
