Contractor said project would take a couple of months and ended up taking over 6 months. Weeks went by when work was not done on our project while contractor finished up on other projects. Contractor had to re-do some elements of the project because they were not done right to begin with. i.e. drainage of basement washing machine was improperly done and the cement of the basement had to be jackhammered out twice. Electrical work was substandard and I found out later, proper inspections were not made of electrical work. Several elements in the house do not work despite them being "fixed" more than once. Bathroom sink was never properly mounted and started to fall out of the wall after a couple of months. Contractor repaired it but never came back to repair where the drywall was cut out. Flooring is bubbling up in several spots in the bathroom. Contractor was hired to install closet doors. But they were so cheap the knobs broke off within months and could not be repaired. Doors started to fall out of guide rails. A couple of windows we had contractor replace with new ones are malfunctioning and coming loose from the sliders. The worst of it was having days and weeks go by without any work being done and hardly any communication but always asking for another check

Description of Work: Barbara did some work herself on siding and other repairs at my home and then worked as a contractor to find the company to reroof my house. I'm recently widowed and didn't have a clue what to ask and she put it all together. She rates an "A" on all of the above ratings and more. I would highly recommend Jill of All Trades. She's a gem!

The work was completed on time and on budget. Cost effective and creative solutions were implemented without cutting corners or overlooking the fine details. The work was done in a professional manner and the work area was kept in order during the entire process. I'll be using them again and would recommend you do too.
Description of Work: Garage remodel. Splitting one large (but chaotic) space into two more useful sections - one for storage and a one for a an art studio. General building maintenance (dry rot, pests, etc.) were dealt with along the way.

I received three other bids for the kitchen remodel.....Barbara Standard (Jill of All Trades) was not the lowest bid, but she did offer something that none of the other contractors provided....she listened. Barbara listened to what it was that I wanted to accomplish....she listened to my thoughts, my ideas, and my questions....and then she offered suggestions to acheive what my ultimate goal was. I am an artist and had very specific ideas about what I wanted and how. Barbara was very accommodating and worked to bring those ideas to reality. The $36,000 included the cost of items that I purchased and Barbara installed: cabinets, countertops, appliances, fixtures, and tile. This was not an easy project....and soon after demolition began it became obvious that there were going to be some challenges. The house was not framed properly....and in some places there was no framing at all....so needed to be corrected. The floor joists were not spaced adequately....and needed to be corrected. The plumbing had to be completely redone....and at that point it became obvious that the kitchen remodel would need to be expanded to include a bathroom remodel since they both shared the same plumbing wall that needed to be completely replaced. Upon removing the ceiling drywall, a bucket full of walnuts and hazelnuts were also removed. Squirrels had been nesting in the narrow attic space and had created significant damage. We had to laugh....and from that point forward everything that required rework/additional work was hence blamed on the squirrels. The final results are incredible....and surpassed my expectations. Barbara's craftmanship and attention to detail is apparent...the kitchen and bathroom are jaw-dropping beautiful. Not only would I recommend Jill of All Trades (Barbara) to anyone looking for an excellent contractor......I will definitely use Barbara's services again myself.....and I am very picky!

What I needed performed: some type of a door or comparable at the top of my basement steps, sanding and painting 4 doors and removing counter space for a new range. Barbara was punctual...it took a couple weeks for an estimate and she stated she was out 8 wks which was fine for me. But I did not hear from her. So I waited 3 more weeks and left messages. I really thought something had happened to her. Finally she responded and stated she had been working at the beach and would be back in Portland in 3 wks. Again I did not hear from her and I had set up an approximate date for my range to be delivered..which I had to cancel and find another contractor. I never did hear back from her after leaving multiple messages. Barbara has been in the business 35 plus years..so I was totally surprised I did not hear from her..I found it quite odd that she did not carry a cell phone...and odder that she took wks to phone back. So I was pretty upset ..and unless she has died or has a illness for an excuse...of course I would never recommend her

The job went well overall. Barbara and Leaf are dedicated, cooperative professionals. There were a couple of minor mis-communications but really no trouble at all. I first saw the add for Jill of All Trades in the Willamette Week and was taken by the name of the business. Meeting Barbara confirmed my belief that I had chosen the right company to do the job. I stayed upstairs in my condominium much of the time they were here so as not to get in their way. They worked steadily and if they ever ate lunch I don't know when! They adhered to a strict schedule, arriving around 8 and working until 5. They were diligent about cleaning up after themselves. Barbara had told me that the final cost of the project might be altered depending upon what problems they could encounter which were not visible at the time of the estimate. The increased cost was only $225. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: My goal was to update my kitchen. First off, Barbara and her son, Leaf, removed heavy old wall paper which had some kind of difficult adhesive plastering it to the walls and they also had to scrape clean an electrical box which had been papered over. At the time of the estimate they measured a space to build a shelf to hold the microwave above the stove and also took measurements for new kitchen counters. After washing the walls, they painted the kitchen including the ceiling. About a week later Barbara had a plumber come in and remove the kitchen sink in preparation for the person who installed the new counter tops. She had to do a little carpentry work herself before the new counters could be installed because the old counters had been installed (not to well) by a do-it-yourselfer. The new kitchen is a delight!

It was a large project. We spent over $10000. The work was perfect and extraordinary. The quality of their craftsmanship was extraordinary. The remodeler was approachable and diligent in getting it done in a timely fashion. She was knowledgeable too. The price was good. As a matter of fact, she is going to be doing some kitchen remodeling for us next.
Description of Work: Jill of All Trades Remodeling did interior, bathroom and downstairs remodeling for us about 8 or 9 months ago in 2010. They replaced a window and did some carpentry work as well.

I contacted Barbara based on past experience of work she's done for me. She helped me think through my options, measured and ordered the custom windows and met the delivery at my house. We arranged a time for her to do the work; she came as scheduled and did it. She cleaned up after the job.
Description of Work: Barbara took out 2 funky aluminum slider windows from my house, enlarged the openings and installed two new energy-efficient custom-made picture windows with small slider areas at the bottom. She redid the exterior siding as required.

SHE WAS GOOD. SHE DID THE WORK THAT I ASKED FOR AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO BE PRESENT. SHE DIDN'T CALL ME A WHOLE BUNCH OF TIMES AND ASK "WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?", SHE JUST DID THE WORK IN A RELIABLE AND RESPONSIBLE WAY.
