Amazing! Jay is professional, kind and meticulous about his work. The windows are beautiful. He did a fantastic job. The house was left neat and tidy every day. He communicated the plan well for completion of the project. Many neighbors came over to take a look and asked for his card - they were so impressed! Would not look anywhere else if considering replacing windows on our old house!

Jay and his team were punctual when meeting to review work and provide an estimate and they showed up on time. The project took several days, but was minimally intrusive, although they, of course, needed to work both inside and out to replace trim molding. They cleaned up after themselves everyday. The craftsmanship was outstanding. The house was definitely challenging as none of the window openings were square. Windows fit well and carpentry for trim is excellent. The work was done over 4 years ago, and has held up extremely well.
Description of Work: Jay replaced all of our century old, double-hung windows with low-e windows.

He took the time to measure everything perfectly and get it right. He gave me a price and stuck to the price he gave me. I gave him couple of thousands down, he did the job and I paid him the rest of it, no problem. Everything fits perfectly like it was supposed to and it was good quality product.
Description of Work: I've ordered a bunch of windows to be installed by them.

He was able to do what another company failed to complete and took on our job, even though it was small, when other companies did not even return our calls. He explained what he was about to do, what his cost would be, how long it would take, and he stayed within his time frame and cost quote. The door has never been this well insulated.
Description of Work: He re-hung, tuned, and insulated our heavy wooden front door.

Our windows work wonderfully now. Jack of the Woods completed the job in a couple days as planned. There were on time and professional. They even came back after over a year to make an adjustment.
Description of Work: I have an old house built in 1926. I needed to have it repainted and decided t have my old windows refurbished. After they were stripped of paint, Jack of the Woods: - re-suqared and resized a couple casement windows - unstuck all the top sashes - reattached all the sashes to weights with new rope (all the ropes were cut) - installed weather stripping on all the windows - added new hardware to all the new windows

Jay provided excellent customer service throughout. He communicated clearly and stuck to the agreed upon estimate and timeframe. He kept the workplace very clean throughout and was always friendly and helpful. The restored windows are fantastic. They look great, work perfectly, and provide better insulation than before.

We had recently purchased an old Portland style home which still had all original windows from the early 1900s. They were in haggard condition (e.g., painted shut, cracked glass, beat-up wood frames slathered in layers of paint) and we knew we had to replace them all. We researched several options, but ultimately wanted to keep the windows looking as natural as possible with the age and history of the house. Although substantially pricier, we were leaning toward replacing with wood Marvin windows. When getting our estimate, however, Jay had also suggested the option of restoring/refurbishing all of the windows. It seemed unfathomable that he would be able to restore these beat up windows to their original working condition and beauty (with the added bonus of double-paned glass), but we decided to go for it. Although it looked really labor intensive, it was clear that Jay and his team were knowledgeable and experienced craftsmen. They were very detail-oriented and went the extra mile to make sure the end result was perfect. For those who might be considering the option of restoration vs. new windows, we found some pros and cons. Pros: Despite how much work was involved, it was slightly less expensive to go this route than purchasing 11 new Marvin windows; there was no painting or touch up work for us to do at the end of the job (since often the wood windows are not painted); and most importantly, we kept the original charm of the old windows. A few cons: We don't have the amenities that come with modern windows (e.g., tilting capability or clad exterior) and it did take a little longer to complete the job (which was okay for our schedule, but might not work for others). All in all, we are very happy with how our windows turned out and would recommend Jack of the Woods, Inc. to others seeking high quality carpentry or window work. We should also mention that not only was the level of craftsmanship high, but Jay and his crew were very easy to work with - everyone was friendly, polite, and professional. They took great care in protecting the floors and furniture and they always cleaned up everything at the end of the day. As a bonus, despite the intensity of this job, they also got done well ahead of schedule.
Description of Work: Restored 11 double-hung windows in an old Portland style home. This included removing all windows, stripping and repairing them, replacing windows with double paned glass, replacing window hardware, re-painting, repairing the window pulleys, and re-installing windows.

The work went well. They worked at our place for a full day (10 hrs on door, 7 on window). They were conscienscious, polite and cleaned up after themselves. They communicated what they were up to well and were readily available to come back to re-adjust the doors drop-seal until it was working perfectly. I'd have no problem recommending this company for quality work.
Description of Work: Jay worked on a rotted sill on upstairs window. He replaced it with an aluminum cover and replaced some of the wood trim which was rotted. He was careful to make sure that all bad wood was sanded and bondo'ed properly. At the same time his partner Peter worked on tuning up our front door. This door was improperly hung, very hard to open and to close/lock and was poorly sealed to drafts. Peter was very patient in properly adjusting the hinges and lock, resetting the door properly, adding silicone strip weatherseal all around the door frame and trimming the bottom of the door to put a drop-seal into the bottom. After some inevitable trial and readjustment this door now works fantastically and is sealed well from the intrusion of the elements.

It went great. Jay is very meticulous, and is one of the only contractors we've had where everything is done right the first time-- there's nothing that he or I had to fix up afterwards.

I had an excellent experience with them. You get what you pay for with them. They do quality work, and the carpentry work they did was amazing. I would give them high rating on craftsmanship. That is the main reason why you can hire them.

This guy is as close to perfect as a finish carpenter can be. In order to fit it properly he had to clean up the old entry door jamb. Redo the depth and route for weather stripping. Installed a new threshold which required a small floor replacement. All executed perfectly. Gave us a suggestion for buying a new lockset that saved considerable money. Installed the lock set. His respect for our house is, in my opinion, rare. Complete floor covered, used only vacuum tools, cleaned up perfectly after day one and returned on day two to finish. He even swept the grass for shaving. Nice and cheerful at all times. The best is the door fits perfectly--not an easy task.

Cold air was leaking through the front door of our 1952 Tudor. The door and the jam were damaged and the door didn't close right. We liked the door and the cost of repairing it would be about half of what a new door would cost. Jay and Aaron took the door off, repaired the door jam, threshold, and sanded, stained and varnished the door itself and put it all back together, making sure that the door hardware worked right. They were both professional and nice to work with.

Even though they were expensive, they were very good. I had 1941 original windows replaced with Marvin double pane windows. I had them replace 4 windows and 1 big sliding door. Jack of the Woods is one of the best companies. They were not cheap, but everything was done exquisitely. If required, I will use their services in the future as well.

Jay and his team were terrific. They were very professional, gave accurate estimates and were easy to work with. We changed and added things throughout the project and they were extremely accommodating the whole way through. Fast, efficient, clean/tidy and courteous and the end product is just stunning. We LOVE our new windows! They are all wood, four of the really large ones have wood framing panes in them, they are all double hung and open both top and bottom. It is a huge improvement from our 1939, single pane, painted shut windows that we had lived with for six years. Thank you Jay and team!
Description of Work: All of our windows (21) in our house were replaced and one frame had to be rebuilt. We had screens installed and window hardware/handles.

Jay Lane of Jack of the Woods did a number of significant projects for us and we were extremely happy with the work done. So we proposed the staircase remodel. His partner Gary gave us great advice on the type of railing, balusters, newels etc. needed to make the new staircase fit with the architecture of our house. He also suggested that we go to the mill work company to verify that the style of wood components fit what we had in mind. It really gave us a clear idea of how our new staircase would look. We now completed the bid. Once the materials came in, Jay, Gary and Peter started the work and demolished the old half wall. They were very careful to contain the mess and also preserve our newly refurbed walls surrounding the staircase. As usual, Jay and his team paid great attention to detail and craftsmanship. At each step, the components were fit together with precision. The end result is a great addition to our house.
Description of Work: Jack of the Woods remodeled our upper staircase in our small 85 year old Northeast English Cottage. The beat-up half-wall was replaced with a beautiful railing including rail, balusters, and newels. The white oak floor was extended to accommodate the new railing using excellent condition salvaged white oak flooring as well as new white oak. The stringers on the upper section were refurbished and the existing treads were replaced with new white oak treads; the risers were replaced as well. And a railing was added to the lower section of the stairway. We were in the house during much of the work and the stairway separates the bedroom and bathroom from the rest of the house. The Jack of the Woods crew were great at making sure that the stairway was accessible and clean at night with a temporary railing for safety.

They were on time & worked in a positive manner. Work areas were protected and cleaned after finished. Work was well done, in a professional manner. Doors work great, and are nice to have on after nearly 8 months without on bathrooms and basement entry.
Description of Work: Installed 3, pre-purchased glass-centered, slam doors obtained from home improvement store from a special order. Required mortising of hinge sets on 3 doors, and correction of sill hinge slots where needed. Also required mortising for original lock sets, door hardware and knob installation. Installation was on older sills that had previously hung doors on the. Installation also involved re-using hardware from original doors, circa 1936. The cost was stated which employed two workers for approximately 8 hours: $650.

Installation went well. Guys were great to work with and carpentry skills were very good. I would trust them in my home without my presence. They did not come out to give us a quote so they underestimated the number of days the work would take (3 instead of 1). We did not anticipate our ceilings would be un-even, so the more challenging part was estimating and deciding whether to proceed and have a plasterer to come in after the carpentry. We wish we would have insisted Jack of the Woods come out to make an in-person estimate prior to beginning the project and advise us of what we'd face.

THE MEMBER WAS A GREAT CLIENT TO WORK FOR. I INITIALLY GAVE HER OUR HOURLY RATE OVER THE PHONE. SHE SAID SHE WANTED A ONE PIECE CROWN W/A PICTURE RAIL UNDER IT. I ESTIMATED ABOUT 1 TO 2 DAYS. SHE HIRED US BASED ON THAT CONVERSATION. WHEN WE ARRIVED TO DO THE JOB SHE HAD CHANGED IT TO A 3 PIECE BUILT UP CROWN, NOT A PROBLEM, BUT CLEARLY A JOB THAT WOULD TAKE LONGER THAN A 1 PIECE CROWN. THE UNEVENNESS OF THE CEILINGS WAS NOT A PROBLEM FOR THE INSTALLATION BUT CREATED EXTRA EXPENSE FOR HER AS THE CROWN COULD ONLY GO IN STRAIGHT AND SHE WOULD HAVE TO GET A PLASTERER IN AFTER US TO MAKE THE CEILING MEET THE CROWN ON MANY SPOTS. IF I HAD KNOWN SHE WANTED A 3 PIECE CROWN, THE HOURLY RATE WOULD NOT HAVE CHANGED, BUT THE ESTIMATED TIME FRAME FOR COMPLETION WOULD HAVE CHANGED. IT IS TRUE THAT IF I WOULD HAVE SEEN THE CEILING BEFORE WE GOT THERE TO INSTALL THE CROWN, I WOULD HAVE ADVISED HER THAT IT WOULD BE NECESSARY TO HAVE A PLASTERER COME IN AFTER US. OVERALL THINGS TURNED OUT WELL AND SHE EXPRESSED HAPPINESS WITH THE WORK. SHE WAS A VERY PLEASANT PERSON TO WORK FOR AND THE KIND OF CLIENT WE ALWAYS HOPE TO GET.

Gary and Jay work together; Gary was quick to respond with an appointment to check out what we wanted done, then he was timely and accurate with his quote. Timing of the project (since it was a little 2-day job) was squeezed in between other work, which was great for us. The finished product (three re-hung interior doors, including all hardware and filling of previously made holes by someone else) was perfect. Jay is an excellent door craftsman. The new exterior door also is a better finished product than expected, since the jamb is part concrete and part old wood. Great job on weatherstripping as well. Excellent craftsmanship, very good to work with, both Gary and Jay are terrific.
Description of Work: Rehung three doors that were botched by previous (unrelated) contractor; and provided, installed and weatherstripped a new solid exterior door to a basement entrance of our home.

The project went very smoothly. Jay and his employee, Gary, were pleasant to have around. They kept in touch about their comings and goings, protected the house with plastic sheeting in their work areas and did meticulous work. Jay Lane was on site most of the day during every day of the project and Gary handled things capably when he was not present. Jack of the Woods was expensive, but probably worth the price. I did not try to negotiate Jay's price because a bad prior experience with a low-bidding contractor had left me willing to pay for excellence. You get what you pay for.
Description of Work: Jay installed four Marvin double-paned windows and a Marvin pseudo-French door. Two of the windows were fixed--one very large, one was a casement window and one was double hung. They painted the exterior of those windows that were not pre-clad.
