We hired Larry Alfieri of Do-All Handyman Service recently to replace an exterior door & frame. He was prompt in coming to give bid & followed through with the work within 1 week of that time. The problem was in how he completed the job. The quote stated he would replace the door/frame, install trim & interior moldings, caulk to finish & paint door prior to install with Benjamin Moore color as directed by client, dispose of old unit & debris. In fact he did install door/frame. He did not complete corking on the inside of door frame; did not complete trim & interior moldings but left big gaping spaces; did not use Benjamin Moore paint and used inferior brand & color did not match; left the project full of debris & not neat & clean as he found the area; rushed off to go to another appointment & left before we had a chance to inspect his work before his departure. Also, he was unfamiliar with the alarm system on the door & said he would contact our security company to get instructions; however he failed to re-install correctly the contacts on the new door (left part of contact on old door) which then entailed us having the security company coming out to correct the problem at an additional cost to us. All in all, we were not happy & were left with several items to correct on our own that we thought would have been done in a more professional manner as indicated by his proposal as well as cleaning up the mess he left behind.
Description of Work: Replaced exterior door and frame and filled in with cement space beneath door jam

I called Larry the previous week to ask him for the estimate. I described the work in detail on the phone and asked if he normally did projects like this and he replied that he did. He told me he provide the estimate no later than Tuesday, but without any notice just didn't show up. I called to kindly remind him of the estimate request on Wednesday of that week, and he showed up the next day, Thursday, without any warning. By chance I happened to come home shortly after he arrived. Larry had a ladder out, and was about to climb up to a lower roof section directly below the window. He banged his ladder against my rain gutter hard enough that I felt the need to remind him not to damage it. (The gutter had been previously replaced by another contract who did damage it, hence my caution.) Larry climbed up and began poking the board in question with a short awl. This is standard procedure for finding dry rot, but once he did find dry rot Larry began gouging out a larger section of the wood, making it look terrible. Then he proceeded to test other pieces of wood trim, and he found more dry rot, and gouged out areas of those boards too! So now there were four areas of gouging across the front of my house! I was upset, but didn't say anything, because I thought the trim would be replaced in short order anyway. Larry finally came down to the ground and asked some questions about paint. There was no indication from him that he wouldn't be able to do the job. He asked for my email address to send the quote. Later that afternoon I received an email from Larry that he decided not to bid this job, due to the difficulty of accessing the dry rot. I'm not sure whether or not I should give Larry any credit for declining to bid because he was overwhelmed by the difficulty. To give him the benefit of the doubt, that's why I rated his professionalism a D rather than an F. Nonetheless, gouging out four areas of wood on the front of my house unnecessarily, and then deciding not to bid, is inexcusable. In his declination email Larry also recommended another contractor to do the work, who has several D and F grades on Angie's List. I had dealt with Larry once before, when he made me a pair of wooden ramps that were of high quality, and his price was reasonable. My recommendation is that if you have relatively simple jobs Larry might be a reasonable handyman to use, but I would be cautious with anything more complex.
Description of Work: Obtain an estimate for repairing or replacing a wood trim piece that had cracked around a window on the front of the house, above the garage.

Response from Do All Handyman Service
Whenever I decline a job, I always give a client a referral to other contractors who can be helpful. Some prospective clients give a distinct impression that for one reason or another, they will not be pleasant to work with. It is always my prerogative to choose my clients wisely to ensure a win-win outcome. Only a fool submits to the threat of an uncomplimentary review and takes on a situation where a win-win outcome is not likely. A pleasant outcome for all concerned is integral to my work style.

I like that he is punctual, he does what he says he is going to do and he is a perfectionist. I don't like that he is a perfectionist and he is really expensive.

You may already be aware that you get what you pay for. "CHEAP WORK AIN'T GOOD AND GOOD WORK AIN'T CHEAP." Clients who want a cheap "half-a****" fix have to call somebody else. Usually in the end, they won't be satisfied with it anyway, and you can guess who will get blamed. This client is a good example of someone who wants their cake and eat it too.

The report above includes false statements. the member declined my bid and I did not perform his siding repairs. Further, my rate is not $80 per hour, but $50 per hour. Please notify your client users of Angie's list that they may be liable for false testimonials that injure the reputation of your paying customer-contractors. The failure of Angie's List to protect the interests of your paying customer-contractors may also injure your customer relationships and damage the reputation of Angie's list as well. If your goal is truly as you say, to provide unbiased information to your members, then it appears you have some repairs to perform to that end.

When they saw the hardware that came with the rods, they explained that it was insufficient for the weight and swapped to other screws that they brought with them. They were careful to keep everything tidy and cleaned up everything completely before leaving. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I hired them to hang drapes over our patio door.

EVERYTHING is done well. I can't say enough good things about this man. He is punctual, has great ideas to help me make my ideas a reality and improve on them, he cleans up thoroughly after himself. Most importantly he does EXCELLENT work. I am happy with everything he has done for me and my list of tasks for him is growing. I really don't want to tell anyone about him because I want to keep him working for me! If too many people know about him, his calendar will get full! My neighbor has also been very pleased with his work-- in fact she recommended him to me!
Description of Work: Larry build a large wooden box to protect our well pump. Larry has also fixed my sticky front door, put a notch in my roof to accommodate a tree, built a deck for my hot tub, advised me on paint for my porch, installed track lights. He has installed several large windows for my neighbor (in a blank wall)
