Scott was recommended to me by my brother I called him and he was given overall verbal details of the job on the phone and he gave an approximate quote of $750.00 that is with me buying the supplies and it would take about two days. Scott came out to Fort Rock from Portland, at the time I thought he was working in Redmond so he was charging travel time from Portland. Scott met me in Fort Rock to go over the job and he made a list of supplies and the $750.00 estimate was good. We went to Home Depot and spent $763.00 on supplies,( many of which were more than needed as it was a long way to drive to get more if he ran out.) Scott got the flooring installed, lino down, hot water heater and corner shower installed. He turned the water on and the shower pipes leaked so he took the parts home, he had another job to do, then fixed the piping and brought it back and installed it. (at this point he was upset because the plumbing was a problem) He began to install the rest of the shower and there were some parts missing. (He purchased a shower where the box had been opened so consequently all the parts were not put back into the box.) he installed the sink and was upset because he could not get the water to work). At this point he called me and said the job was complete he needed an additional $450.00 said I could give him a check but he would prefer cash. I left him cash at my house which he picked up and went home. Scott was going to do a small job for me in my home in Bend and he left and did not do the job. I was working and could not go to Fort Rock to see the job when it was done. I got there three days later to find the shower not completed, the moulding not replaced, the lino not secured down. He also took all of the extra supplies I bought that I was going to return and some of the supplies were not even used and were taken. I tried to call him immediately on seeing what he had done and he never called me back. I made numerous phone calls and texts. He would not call me back. My brother was shocked at this because he had never heard of him doing anything like this before. Scott brought a trailer to the site with his 4 wheeler in it and spent some time on that instead of working. He also brought his gun so he could shoot rodants in the fields. My son had a case of beer in the refer (as the home belongs to my son who was in Iraq at the time the work was being done). There was 1 beer left when I got there to inspect the job. There was more than $100.00 worth of supplies he took that I could have returned. He was to take the trash away from the for the price quoted. That trash was left in the shop along with old food he didn't eat that caused numerous mice to invade the shop. He also helped himself to the little food that was in the freezer along with all the beer. He did not have permission to eat the food or drink the beer! If he was upset by the circumstances, all it would taken was a phone call, I would have worked with him. He did that once and I understood and he was compensated for his extra time. The total job was $1200.00 for labor and approximately $800.00 in supplies. I asked for an itemized statement for my son so he could submit it to his accountant for his taxes. I never received an itemized statement. Scott told my brother he didn't know about needing a hot water heater (he helped me pick one out at home depot and we bought it) I believe his estimate was high and I agreed to pay him what he quoted, as Fort Rock is some distance out of town and I understand it costs more to do work there. His estimate of two-day job was reasonable without the water and pipe problem. He most likely thought it was a piece of cake job and he was getting paid top dollar to do the work. When a few problems presented themselves he got angry. He got paid for what he did and he had no other jobs to get to at that time. He could have stayed and finished. He also go paid for what he didn't do! Yes, I was angry for being taken and not checking the job before paying him and not getting a receipt at the time the job was completed. I should have gotten a written quote also. He should have given me one of each without me asking if he was an up and up handyman - remodel person. He was a trusted friend of my brother and I trusted him. I should not have!
