My home back-up generator was and quot;laquored upand quot; because I failed to run it regularly. I called Cummins, who provided the generator, to set up a service call. The problem with the generator is common among home-owners and my phone call seemed to confirm this was not unusual. Cummins provided a repair estimate that was substantial at $623.94 which indicated 3 hours of work and, I assumed, would fix the problem. The unit didn't cost much more than the repair estimate...new. But I went ahead and authorized the service call. I was hoping an expert would be able to fix the problem in less that 3 hours. The technician was professional and on time. Within 30 minutes he had confirmed the diagnosis. He explained that replacing the carburetor was the least expensive repair alternative. He had neither a new carburetor nor a and quot;repair kitand quot; with him. He said he would call me with an estimate and left. Cummins service called (Laura Johnson) and said it would now cost $1,200 to fix the problem. I said my understanding was the original estimate included fixing the problem. She said otherwise. I agreed to pay the service call which she discounted 10%. I will either take the carburetor apart myself or find a handyman through Angies List. It was a big mistake on my part to contact Cummins. They apparently deal with much bigger fish than an ordinary home-owner.

The experience was very positive; they were on time, did a good job and it worked perfectly. I shopped quite a bit and their pricing was competitive.

After having Cummins out twice, I would never seek out another contractor to service our generator. Both office staff and the technicians are very courteous, prompt and professional. They do a great job for a reasonable price. The technician will leave you his cell phone number in case you have questions or problems with start up. I actually had to call the technician once and he helped me solve a small problem myself. This saved me the cost of an additional service call. The first technician left me with a set of written instructions that was better than those provided by the original mfg. I value this kind of service and am pleased to share it with others.
