This project started with an old, telephone booth sized, fiberglass shower insert drain giving way and flooding the garage after a morning shower. After a call to a plumber, it became apparent that the insert would have to go, along with the toilet that had a quiet leak for years and was slowly deteriorating the floor under it. This wasn't an easy fix...it was going to require a pro. We called about 5 contractors for bids and it seemed the average price, per bathroom, for renovation was approx $10K per. Our job was to select the one we were most comfortable with. We ended up with Doug Reese (Centerpointe Construction) to do the job...his knowledge and suggestions were spot on to what we were trying to do on our limited budget. His bid wasn't the lowest...and it wasn't the highest. The job actually started just after the first of December 2012 with the addition of a neo angle shower insert into our laundry room. While the house is 40 years old, it had been plumbed for a full bath in the laundry room and was never completed. This shower was essentially our temporary bathroom (while making it a permanent addition to the home), during the upcoming demolition and rebuild of the two main baths. This job was completed by the end of the month, giving a few days off for the Christmas holiday. Demolition started upstairs on the bathrooms the first part of January. Doug provided us with a complete schedule of the project with names of each contractors that would be in the house on each given day...right down to the inspections along the way. During the re-pipe of the house (which all the galvanized pipe was replaced with the new flex pipe in new homes today), it was discovered that my main service line was replaced some years before I purchased the home and it was done incorrectly (it wasn't the proper depth and was the incorrect type of piping). Replacing that pipe was a surprise add to the bottom line of this project ($2K), but it was completely necessary as I could anticipate higher repair bills down the road if I didn't get at this. The only delay in this project was near the end with the sub vendor for the glass doors for the shower/bathtub. Initial delivery had the glass scratched...the second delivery was the wrong size...and finally the third delivery was correct and installed. I was given a slight discount for my troubles with that. Doug was a pleasure to work with...he was on top of everything along the way and was more than open to questions and suggestions along the way.
