GENERAL CONTRACTOR. CARPENTRY, REMODELING AND SMALL ADDITIONS.
In the beginning, I had Hamilton come and look at the kitchen (along with serval other contractors) to give me a proposal. All of them had insisted it was a botched job. Hamilton got back to me right away with a detailed email/proposal. He wasn't going to be cheap but he wasn't the most expensive either. I seem to recall he was somewhere around $60/hour. Possibly $65.00. This seemed like a lot to me compared to what I paid before but I was so frustrated with my kitchen job having been a disaster that I was determined to pay more this time and have it done well. That $ seemed worse in the beginning, but as he went along, it actually ended up not being so bad. I think he had mentioned that he always tries to be careful not to get anyone's hopes up that it's going to be super inexpensive, but then it's often not as bad when he's done (at least in my case that was true). In my case he bid for the job as opposed to hourly (which might have been why it was more affordable than I'd expected - cause in truth, he did a LOT of work), and it may just depend on what kind of work you need - whether to do hourly or by the job. I also noted that he worked fast compared to past contractors - fast but not sloppily. He was always courteous and I have to say that after experience with several past contractors, i loved that he was intelligent and articulate and friendly without being one who talks your ear off or is so quiet that you feel awkward striking up a conversation. Just a bonus there. He was appropriate and had good boundaries - I loved that I never had to hear about how his car broke down or other excuses or TMI stories. I remember my tile-installer had actually told me how awful past clients were because they'd complain about his work. I was terrified to complain when I noticed him not installing the tile straight or using a level - which of course is exactly how that guy wanted me to feel. I also appreciated that Hamilton did the work himself. He didn't come in, sell me on his great personality and expertise then send in some other guy. : - / Lastly, I was at the end of my rope and was feeling incredibly picky by the time he came along, and he dealt with my "demands" without sending me a defensive or annoyed vibe. He's also a family man with a nice wife and adorable kids whom I met once when I came to drop off a check I'd forgotten to send. Just another bonus. :) Update: most of the work Hamilton did was a few years ago. A couple of days ago I called him in a panic because my disposal had fallen and the appliance in-warranty guys were coming in a couple of hours to install a new disposal but - having seen the sink a couple of weeks earlier (long story) they reminded me that there was a slab of wood the farm sink was sitting on which had too-small a cut-out (done by previous contractor) and would need widening. However they weren't allowed to cut it themselves...so they were worried they'd have to reschedule. Hamilton was on the other side of town and said he was working on a job but said he'd try to make it to my side of own before they arrived (with no guarantees). He arrived just as the two guys came and he got down their and sawed away - carefully I might add, which is important under a hand-made fireclay sink - bit by bit until he got it wide enough. It wasn't the easiest or fastest work and thankfully the installers were willing to wait patiently. He got it perfect and they were finally able to install the disposal with extended flange. Not only that but they were so impressed with Hamilton's work and pleasant demeanor that they asked me if I had one of his cards after he left, wishing they'd asked for one. I didn't but I still had his # in my phone which I gave them! Best part of all: Hamilton didn't even charge me!! I shouldn't tell people that as I'm sure this isn't typical for him but he seemed sympathetic to my crazy situation and perhaps regretted that he hadn't noticed the smaller space in that wood beforehand (?). That said, it was a long time ago that he was in my kitchen and he hadn't been asked to do work specifically on that area so there's no reason to assume he should have noticed it. So, yeah, still recommend. :)
Description of Work: Another contractor had done a poor job building a new custom countertop in my older home - as well as installing a farm sink (which cracked), dishwasher with cabinet panel, disposal, and a few other things. Hamilton was highly recommended by a neighbor who specializes in wood floors and works with him on occasion. That neighbor said he wished I'd asked for a recommendation long beforehand because this guy Hamilton that he knows is a very good carpenter, and a real carpenter with a lot of experience is needed when not just installing already-made, cookie-cutter configurations from Home Depot. Hamilton did an amazing job undoing some of the past work and rebuilding, as well as improving other areas greatly. He also did some extra work I hadn't intended to do yet, and he did it well. He had to be very creative in some areas and he took the time to think it through, research where needed and ask me what I thought before proceeding. His solutions were functional as well as aesthetically pleasing

We needed to replace our ugly and dangerous railing around the hole in the entry where the stairs go to the lower level. I wanted to do something with copper pipes as the spindles and using amber glass post caps and that would be as nice as a fine piece of furniture, since the railing is such a focal point in the entryway. Hamilton was perfect for the job. He's a real craftsman and a great designer. He took my basic ideas and enhanced them and we came up with a beautiful railing made with exotic wood, horizontal copper pipes and the amber glass rail posts. People comment about it's beauty all the time. Definitely worth every penny when you're looking for exquisite work.
Description of Work: Custom build a railing for stairway with exotic wood and copper.
