They replaced the old fiberglass insulation with cell foam boards, blew in new insulation in the unfinished portions of the attic, re-routed the kitchen vent pipe, and install a bathroom fan and new lighting. Gregg and Dave relied on Isaac Roofing Co. for the new roof (with new ridge vents) and coordinated with the electrician. The work was done very quickly, everybody was professional from start to finish, and the new insulation and roof ventilation is working out great. It is still warm like Gregg predicted, but it cools down really fast and it is not a furnace anymore! Gregg and his team are very honest, prompt, and they did a fantastic job. I would gladly call on them again. Sorry about the late review!
Description of Work: Gregg and his team worked on my house last summer. I own a 1924 house with a remodeled attic, who was fairy cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. The roof started leaking the previous winter, so I was looking to tear down the roof and re-insulate the attic.

Gregg and his team are truly top notch! I received excellent communication, a spot-on quote, excellent customer service and excellent work completed. I am THRILLED with how it all turned out. I love this team so much, I'm quoting out my bathroom remodel. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my house. They're the best!
Description of Work: I had the team blow in insulation in the top floor of my house (approximately 1,000 sq. ft.) and also replace the existing windows with new Anderson windows. In addition, they installed a new front door, blocked out the old back door and installed a new sliding glass door to the back of my house. The work was done quickly, efficiently and with superior craftsmanship.

I couldn't be more please with the service from Gregg and his company. He is extremely personable and honest. He gave us multiple options with increasing our home's efficiency and explained why some of the options might not be worth it, even if it meant more business for him. He has a vast knowledge of the industry and how an HVAC system should and shouldn't be designed. We were extremely pleased with the results. Thanks!

What a shock it was to be hit in the face with actual heat when picking up something from the floor near the furthest register. Draftiness was reduced so that it was more comfortable even when the thermostat was set fairly low in the winter. In the Summer a refreshing cool blast from the air conditioner came through that register. Removing old insulation cleaned the attic and made it easier for Gregg's team to seal. We felt good about a clean attic. In addition to more comfortable temperatures, my allergy symptoms declined shortly after the job was done. Greg's bid was competitive. His work was meticulous and professional. It works! He is great to work with!
Description of Work: After living in the house for 27 years I finally realized why 3 out of 4 heating vents on our main floor ran cold in Winter and warm in Summer. The ducts run about 50 feet from the furnace through in an unconditioned crawl space to the registers. Hot air leaked through the joints and was lost through duct walls functioning as heat sinks. Unconditioned air entered our house through various openings. This had been going on for 52 years. We had a thin layer of old insulation in the attic where birds had nested. We wanted to clean out the old insulation rather than blowing over it. Gregg proposed solutions from the ground up: Add a new vapor barrier, insulate in the crawl space under the floor, seal and insulate ducts, insulate the wall between crawl space and downstairs room, remove old attic insulation, seal openings build dams, blow in new insulation, add a bathroom fan. He helped us get our Energy Trust of Oregon cash incentives.

Nick came out to my home to inspect some areas we thought were missing insulation and sealing, allowing a lot of cold air during the winter. He did a very thorough job inspecting all areas of the home, including the crawl space and attic areas, used an infrared cameras on several walls and did an air pressure test on our house to see if we had major problem areas. He found a few deficiencies, including the lack of insulation and open in our floor that prompted the initial inspection. He also had a few recommendations about other little things we could do to help seal some gaps in the house. Our home is newer, so there weren't many major problems to assess, and the few things that needed to be done were pretty small in nature. Nick left and said the company would follow up with an estimate. I never heard anything back, and that reflects my poor grade on responsiveness. I know that this would have been a pretty small job for them, but some kind of note letting me know would have been appreciated.

Gregg, the owner, and his crew were very responsible when working on my house. They were very thorough and professional. Though they were not the least expensive quote I had collected, I felt that the quality of their workmanship was worth the price. I didn't want to go cheap and not have a good job performed. I was very pleased with their work and the follow-up on the fans when there was a slight issue that had nothing to do with their work but rather to do with my house. I highly endorse this company.

We were having moisture in the attic and it was determined that there was insufficient air circulation through the existing soffit vents and roof vents and in some areas no ventilation at all. The bathroom vents were also improperly vented throughout the 8 inch roof vents instead of having a dedicated vent for each bathroom fan. The effect of keeping this uncorrected is like spraying a garden hose against the house. The moist air ricochets off the roof vent back into the house. Gregg and his team used a calculation to determine the correct amount of net free air required and how much NFA each vent provided. Incidentally those small 3" round vents all throughout the soffits don't allow any air flow. 4"x16" soffit vents were added all around the house as were 8" roof vents. I'm going to guess about 20 of each. They also insulated all bathroom, dryer, and kitchen hood vents in the attic to prevent condensation from forming during the colder months. Very professional crew protected the interior and left no trace inside or out. Very happy I did this now rather than years down the road when major moisture, mold, and structural problems arose.

Our 1920 bungalow was in need of an energy upgrade. We had purchased an Angie's List Big Deal energy audit, which was performed by another company, who gave us an estimate. We contacted Balanced Energy Solutions for a second estimate, and ended up hiring them because their estimate was very detailed and they were willing to break it down for us so we could decide to have all or part of the work performed. We were looking to insulate & seal the house, and to get a new furnace and water heater. We ended up not purchasing the new water heater at this time because our current water heater is still functioning fine. The people at Balanced Energy Solutions were very efficient and detailed in their explanation of the work to be performed. Nick was great to work with. The total for the job was $13,171, but we received $1,563 in Energy Trust credits, and also received a $350 tax credit for the furnace, which was a great incentive. Our house is quieter, stays warmer in the cold months and cooler in the hot months. The furnace is much more efficient than our old furnace, and we anticipate that our energy bills will be significantly reduced. We would definitely hire this company again.

They were very prompt. The lead person got back to me right away and they were very prompt to respond to my inquiries. They presented a projected cost and they were able to stay by that. They were on schedule, came in, and did the work with minimal disruption. They were neat and cleaned up after themselves. They were very thorough in explaining to me what needed to be done. They did everything they said they were going to do for the price that they say they were going to do it. They also did all the paperwork for me to get my energy credit and submitted the paperwork, which might have been harder for me to do on my own.
Description of Work: I have used Balanced Energy Solutions. They did some ceiling around my plumbing and electrical areas and then they had to redo some weatherproofing. They cleaned out the old insulation in the crawl space. They also replaced the vapor barrier and installed new vents. They also insulated some of the water pipes and the floor of my crawl space.

Gregg was great to work with. We had BES do a few projects but unfortunately also went with another provider that seemed cheaper (ended up having to be fixed by another contractor and costing more) for a couple of others items. All of the work Gregg's team did was great and I'd recommend him to friends and/or have him back knowing they'd do it right the first time.

Aaron Lazelle was our project coordinator. He was present to direct the work and make sure things were completed to specifications expected. He was professional and when we decided to proceed with approximately half of the recommendations presented, he had no hesitations and there was no pressure to do more. The Balanced Energy Solutions team, carefully blew insulation in to both stories of our house, primarily from the outside. This entailed removing cedar shingles, drilling holes, blowing in the insulation material, caulking and replacing the shingles. Inside some holes were drilled in walls, more insulation blown in, holes replaced, patched and repainted. 2 crawl spaces were made more energy efficient and one of the doorways to crawl space was made larger to our specs. Also an existing hole was sealed to specs between basement and crawlspace. To top it off this company returned in better weather to caulk nail holes and touch up paint exterior so you would never know work was done. Every person we dealt with, Amy in the office, Aaron the coordinator, the foreman, painter inside and outside, were all very professional and willing to make this job perfect! This company stands out to me as exceptional = and best of all we noticed a substantial reduction in our heating bill during the next cycle!
Description of Work: This provider participated in an energy audit of my home, explained the results and made recommendations for upgrades based on those results. They then scheduled the work we chose to proceed with in a very timlely way, and although the work took approx. 3 days to complete, longer than the two that was planned for, I know this was due to a very thorough job.

We reviewed Angie's List and contacted Balanced Energy Solutions, which not only had positive reviews, but is in our neighborhood. The estimator was friendly and informative, and we received the estimate the next day. Our cottage-style house was built in the 1920's and the main crawlspace is very confining, at best, averaging 18" high. A second area requires shinnying down a tiny square hole in the floor. Adam and Robert were friendly and informative, and addressed each inconvenience in good humor. They also fixed several pipes that had come loose, and kindly informed us of dripping pipes. Although we haven't crawled under the house, we can confidently report that the work they did has resulted in a significantly more forceful and warmer flow of heat throughout the house.

I first contacted Gregg to come do a preliminary assessment of our wall insulation, as I was weighing whether I wanted to bite the bullet and replace all of our siding or just repair a section of rot on the existing siding for the time being, with an eye toward replacing it later. Gregg came out and used the IR camera to identify several places in need of new insulation (as well as at least 1 wall that had NO insulation for some reason. This pushed me in the direction of replacing all of the siding, since it is easier to blow in the insulation when the siding is off. I had already taken bids for getting the siding replaced from a few places and Gregg offered to bid it as well. His bid was a little higher than the other companies, but I liked the idea of only having to deal with one company instead of coordinating between a siding company and an insulation company. Gregg provided a detailed bid, itemizing each of the different areas for improvements and options that we had discussed, which made it much easier for me to decide what needed to get done. I hired Gregg to do the siding tear off, rot repair on the side of the house and a small section of asphalt roofing, blowing in insulation in the areas that he had identified, installing new hardiplank siding on the entire house, and doing air sealing in the basement. Gregg's team came out and did everything we had discussed. His siding and roofing team (Miguel and Arturo) did a great job in replacing the siding and repairing the small areas that had rot. They found a leak I didn't know about while replacing the siding near a flat section torchdown roof, so I had them replace the whole torchdown and some rot underneath it as well. The original tear off, insulation/weather sealing, and new siding insulation took about a week in all. The torchdown replacement was done about a month later and took 2 days. The house looks brand new on the outside now. Balanced Energy Solutions is also a CEWO contractor, and as I was looking at replacing my furnace, Gregg was able to walk me through the various options available for energy efficiency upgrades in the CEWO program. I ultimately hired BES to replace my furnace with a heat pump and new thermostat through the CEWO program, as well as installing top mount dampers for my chimney, which had a broken damper that was allowing a lot of hot air out and cold air in. As with any construction project, there were a few hiccups (insulation popping off the interior drywall for instance), but Gregg took care of all of them quickly and with no added cost to the bid. In the end, outside of small unforeseen costs like the rot repair in the torchdown roof, we paid the exact amount from the bid. Gregg and Amy are very easy to work with, and their whole crew is awesome. My wife and I started joking once all of the work was done that we should start making new projects up just to keep them all coming around because we liked them so much. And the house is so much warmer now. I would definitely recommend BES to anyone looking for energy efficiency improvements to their home, and for siding and roofing replacement.
Description of Work: Used IR camera to identify walls needing additional insulation Tore off cedar shingle siding and replaced with new Hardiplank on entire house Repaired rot on exterior walls where water had gotten behind the old siding Tore off and replaced a section of asphalt shingles that had caused the rot Tore off and replaced an old torch-down section of roof that had started leaking and repaired some rot underneath it. Gregg was very knowledgable about his field and remodels and truthful in his bid. Gregg squeezed our whole-house insulation job at the last minute while our plasterers were working on the interior walls. They employed a large crew and finished in about a week. They came back to adjust some settled insulation a few months later for no charge. We are very satisfied with the results and would recommend them to everyone.

I was impressed with the person doing the bid and the workers were on time and pleasant. After the work was done, I had some doubts and asked that the work be re-inspected by the person who did the bid. He did, and found that the work was not done to standard. The owner came out on his day off, apologized, and went above and beyond doing to work and doing additional sealing. The check I wrote was already cashed and there was absolutely no push back in having my concerns considered even though they were already paid. I have more faith in the owners of this company because of this experience. They really have integrity.

Once post-vermiculite removal work began, it proceeded smoothly and was finished in 3 days. The crew was very professional, did a nice job on all aspects of the job, kept dust and mess to a minimum, and cleaned up nicely afterwards. Everyone was great to work with and seemed genuinely interested in doing a good job to ensure the best possible outcome. My home was built in 1945, so the energy savings has been pretty significant thus far--couldn't be happier with the results. This was actually one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Description of Work: Work was done as part of the Clean Energy Works program and included testing, attic vermiculite removal and insulation, crawl space insulation (including underfloor insulation), and house exterior wall insulation. The vermiculite removal was not part of the original plan, but threw a spanner in the works as even testing could not proceed for fear of disturbing the asbestos. Vermiculite removal added $4000 to the project which could not be funded through CEWO. That was an unexpected and costly expense, but was not the fault of the contractor. There was also some miscellaneous carpentry work done on the garage door and deck that was not part of the CEWO program.
