for the cost I would have expected much more professional work to be done. The insulation installed is ok, but half the other work (like door seals) are already coming off, molding is just haphazardly put in and doesn't even line up. The plasterboard patches on the ceiling looks like a patch job my husband would do and last but not least, I have not noticed any energy savings, the living room is still cold in the winter. I definitely would not hire this company. It was a big waste of money.
Description of Work: through Clean Energy Works insulated house and stopped airleaks. Installed bathroom fan.

Description of Work: We contacted Abacus Energy Solutions as well as 2 other furnace companies to obtain bids for a new furnace. We scheduled the appointment for 2:30 pm on 8/29/14 with Abacus. When they didn't show up for their appointment we finally called and left a message with them at 3:45 pm to find out if they were coming or not. Peter called back at around 4:00 pm and said they had a medical issue and had to take someone to the hospital. He also said that it wouldn't have work out anyway because we were too concerned with price. Apparently during the initial phone call to schedule our appointment my husband was asked what criteria he was going to use to select the company to install the furnace. My husband said that pricing was part of his criteria (my husband also listed other areas that he would be looking at as well to evaluate the best bid). Our appointment with Abacus was schedule a week prior to our appointment date. Abacus didn't have the professional courtesy to even call and say they would not show up for our appointment, we had to track them down. This is by far a very bizarre experience and I would "never recommend" this company to anyone. Very unprofessional behavior - not to mention they wasted out time. All 3 of the furnace companies that we contacted to give us an estimated on a new furnace we found on Angie's List. The other 2 vendors were really good so we were able to get to get (2) comprehensive bids to review.

The results of their work were excellent. Prior to their work, we could not keep the temperature in our house above 55 degrees during winter arctic blasts (outdoor temperatures in the teens and 20s). After they sealed and insulated our house (where needed), we were able to maintain indoor temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s during the coldest of weather. The owner of the company was very professional, diagnosed our problem and designed a solution. He was great! The workers who actually showed up to do the work were nice, but not professional. They did not put booties on or lay plastic over the carpet while working in the house. They tracked dirt and mud into the house for 2 straight days and did not clean up after themselves. We spent $175 having our carpets cleaned after the work was performed. Additionally, we had a misunderstaning with the owner about an option we thought was included in the bid. He did not agree but said he wanted us to be 100% satisfied, and that he would get back to me with a compromise and a solution. He did not follow through. Again, the diagnosis was accurate and the result was what we hoped for.
Description of Work: Installed insulation and sealed all cracks, seams, holes, etc. where air can enter and escape the house.

Abacus never completed the audit report as promised. They were more interested in our household income, credit status, how much and when we wanted to spend money to do home energy improvements.

Very professional, always on time. They gave a high bid for total weatherization of the house and we opted to do only part of the work, which they were fine with. The work was good quality and effective at increasing comfort and decreasing heating and cooling costs in our upstairs. They then did the porch work, which was generally fine, but some of the details were a bit sloppy, and we asked for some fixes, which they did resulting in some improvement. It was OK, but we weren't as happy with the porch work as we were with the insulation/ventilation. They were nice to work with and very reliable in showing up when they said they would.
Description of Work: Insulation and ventilation work. Rebuilt understructure of front porch and added railing.

Abucas started on the set date and completed the job one day early. They were prompt, proffesional and cleaned up well each day. Very pleasant workers. My home is holding it's heat much better and I don't hear outside noise as much. I have recommened them to a friend already.

I have really noticed a difference in the house, especially in the elimination of cold air drafts in the kitchen area and the front entryway. We had tried to eliminate the drafts under our doors ourselves, but without much success. Abacus' professional work appears to be there to stay. They worked at getting it just right so that the insulation cut off the drafts entirely but didn't make it almost impossible to open the doors. The replacement of the bathroom fans was particularly welcome to me, as the noise from the fans could be heard all over the house. I found it impressive that women made up all but one person in the Abacus work crew. The one who was not female was the supervisor, Billy, who was a marvel -- he was always cheerful, on time (except once when he called to explain why), and good about seeing that the young women did their jobs without being officious. I could ask him any questions I had or talk to him about anything I didn't think was done to my satisfaction. He answered me straightforwardly in a manner I could understand, and he made sure anything that wasn't right was fixed. In addition, one of the co-owners made regular visits to check on the work. I particularly appreciated that -- I didn't feel I had to crawl into the attic or the crawlspace to check for myself. I knew he was very interested in their doing a good job and that he knew better than I what to look for. Not unusual for Portland, the work was done during the rain (some transporting of materials to the lower floor of the house had to be done outside in the rain) and at least one day, it was cold enough that the deck to the house entrance had frozen rain on it. The job was not held up. It was finished in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely hire Abacus again.
Description of Work: The team handling the energy upgrade on my house was superb. It included: Sierra Club (which advertised the Oregon energy upgrade program online), Clean Energy Works of Oregon (CEWO), which did the energy audit of my house and Abacus Building Contractors, which did the construction needed. Through this program anyone who wants to upgrade his or her house to decrease energy waste is audited and then referred to a lender. When approved, the homeowner can pay back the lender through a local utility by adding a monthly amount to the utility bill. Abacus and their subcontractors installed new insulation in the attic and crawl space, also in two downstairs storage rooms where needed. All air leaks around pipes, doors, heating vents and air intake vents were filled. There were MANY holes -- many more than those I knew about. Through a subcontractor new double-paned windows were installed in the laundry room and a tank-less water heater was also installed by a subcontractor, replacing one of our huge, old water heaters. In addition, I agreed to pay Abacus separately for new bathroom fans and drywall in one of the downstairs storage rooms.

Seemed very nice, very helpful. Discussed my project with me and gave me some good advice. He recommended a couple of options, one of which was to use a contractor of his for some spray foam insulation application. Was very up front and seemed honest - I will definitely give him a call in the future, if I don't end up using his subcontractor for this job.

went well, but initially I was not told that the garage insulation (using foam on the ceiling) would be handled by a sub-contractor, and was not given details on that other company. I had to research that myself. They were prompt and professional in the actual work performed, and were especially throrough with testing and sealiong of air leaks. I can feel the difference

4 guys were out for the job. They worked throughout the day. They had to seal the air ducts and they put weather stripping around the doors too. They did what they were supposed to do and I hope to see this reflect on my bill this coming winter. They didn't leave any messes, and I'm satisfied that they did the sealing promised.
Description of Work: They had to do several different things. They did a blower test to check the house for any air coming in in odd places. They use an infrared light to determine leaks and places that needed insulation. So I decided to have the house sealed, for which I did get a rebate of $400 from the Energy Trust of Oregon, so I did get half back.
