This is the second time that I have used 3rd Generation Hardwood floors. I was as happy the second time as the first. Mike is nice, professional, and does exactly what he says he will do. I trust him and I recommend him. I will use 3rd Generation Hardwood Floors again, when I have the rest of the floors in my house refinished. Highly recommend.

The service was excellent!!! The floors looks amazing! Mike is a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend him to anyone. We could not be happier with the work and the owner.
Description of Work: Our home had hardwood floors in the bedrooms and hallway. We had hardwood installed into the dinning room and kitchen. They matched the flooring perfectly. You cant tell where new hardwood starts or the old ends. The floors where there where stains were patched with new flooring you cant even tell that they are new boards.

Mike and his son were there on time and finished the job when they said they would. The price was comparable to the other bid that I received. The reason for the low grade is that there is a lot of "chatter" and "dish out" from the sanding of the floor. The job is acceptable but no better than that, hence the C grade.

Mike clearly seemed to know what he was talking about when he came for the estimate and impressed me with his background in the flooring business. After the carpets came up we saw that the floors were in awful shape so we wanted to start the project asap. The fact that he could start the very next week was a god-send. Out of four bids, Mike's was the second least expensive. Mike and Travis were meticulous with every piece of the project and left everything very clean. Mike carefully walked us through the project, showing us how how certain irregularities in the flooring might look with finish on them, and asked us whether we'd like to keep those boards or replace them. We ended up keeping some and replacing others. Mike steered us toward a certain water-based finish and we ended up being very pleased with the results. Mike and Travis were punctual, easy to communicate with, and did excellent work. In our opinion Mike is a master craftsman. It would be hard to recommend them highly enough.
Description of Work: Mike and his son Travis sanded and refinished 860 square feet of red oak flooring that had been underneath carpet. Mike removed quarter round base trim and replaced it with stained oak quarter round to match the floor. He replaced 12 boards in such a way that they seem to match the original boards. Mike created 3 oak thresholds at the kitchen, bathroom and front door. We had pulled up the carpet, pad and tack-strip ourselves and Mike and Travis took it from there. Amazingly, Mike bid the project on a Friday and they were able to start the very next week. The whole project took 4 days and Mike came back on Saturday to check over the work and replace the doors they had removed.

Mike came out in the evening and looked at the job. Pretty simple repairs and some refinishing. Mike didn't say that he was going to decide whether he would bid or not bid it. He said he would contact me with a bid. I did not hear from Mike for five days so I decided to give Mike a call. It was a strange conversation. Mike stated that he had not decided whether he would take the job or if he would call me with a bid. In a word, this is flakey. If you don't want more business don't come out and measure. Above all, don't waste people's time. If you are going to have Mike bid a job for you make sure and take his temperature on what his philosophy about bidding is this week!

He was easy to work with, very professional, did a great job and left my house super clean - kind of a dream contractor. I recall his bid being among the lowest for the work as well. I just called him to give me a bid on a house we have just bought and he called me back right away and said he'd get out to see it tonight.
Description of Work: Mike refinished oak floors (original to 1927 house) in my living room and dining room, refinished fir flooring in a bedroom and installed new oak floors in my kitchen and downstairs hallway about 5 years ago.

Very professional, Mike has a real passion for his work and takes pride in the results. His crew was very courteous, punctual and focused. It was clear they had worked together for a long time. Mike is a real pro, he does fantastic work and he saved us about 30% compared to other bids. Hire this guy, you won't be disappointed!
Description of Work: Mike and his straight ahead professional team did a tremendous job replacing about 900 square feet of 100+ year old Russian Red Oak hardwoods on our first floor. They tore out the old floor, and put down white oak cut to the same narrow dimensions as the original 1906 floor. They also put down base shoe and dealt with integrating the fireplace brick with a nice surround. They sanded and stained the floor with English Walnut stain, which Mike matched very carefully to the original oak floor color. He even made extra trips to the paint store to get just the right color. He has a very keen eye for what the finished product will look like and you can trust his judgement. He used one coat of traditional Glitsa finish followed by a water based coat to reduce off-gassing and still have a good hard long lasting finish. Mike and his crew are a well oiled machine. The come early and stay late to keep to your schedule. They arrived exactly on time and finished two days early.

Mike and his son's work on our floors was nothing short of amazing. We recently purchased a home where a prior owner at some point had not cleaned up leaking plant containers or pet urine, and then later tried to bleach out the pet urine stains (to no avail). The stains were significant enough that they wouldn't come out with rough sanding, so after that process, we walked around the house with Mike to decide which boards to try to flip or replace. After six days of meticulous labor (which included filling in every top nail!), our floors are gorgeous. I had requested multiple estimates from various providers, but cancelled the remaining after meeting Mike. His love for his craft was obvious, and I trusted that he would treat our floors with care. I would not hesitate to use him again and everyone who has seen our floors has asked for his contact information. Logistically, it took several phone calls to connect with Mike to get a time set up for an estimate, but in all fairness, this seemed to be an issue for all of the refinishing providers I contacted. And in fact, Mike was one of the first to call me back. After that, he promptly returned my calls and was responsive to my questions.
Description of Work: Refinished approximately 830 square feet of top-nail oak floor in living room, dining room, hallway, and three bedrooms; flipped or replaced stained boards; replaced base shoe with new, primed for painting; refinished thresholds to match floor.

Mike and his son were fine craftsmen and gentlemen. Mike came a day after I asked for an estimate and explained in detail the various stages of the job, the time for each, and the particular procedures and materials. For an 11 by 14 foot room, the estimate was fair. Mike arrive at the scheduled times every day and executed the job with extreme care. The room was sealed; there was almost no effect on the rest of the house or our dail routines. The cleanup was meticulous; Mike checked a day after the job was completed to insure the finish met his high standard. We would recommend him without qualification.

Mike and his son Travis were punctual throughout the five days on the job, cleaned up every evening, worked all day. The floor looks great. We picked Provincial stain which turned out a bit redder than expected, but we're happy with the end result, and feel that Theydid a great job and care about their craft.
Description of Work: Refinished 550 sq ft of existing red oak floor in kitchen, entry and powder room, with three stairs and risers. Cordoned off the area with plastic sheeting. Used dustless system and there was hardly any dust afterwards. Sanded, filled and applied stain and glitsa swedish finish.

Mike was professional and used one other contractor who was an expert installing stairways. Mike did exactly what he said he'd do when he said he'd do it. Mike was a good listener and was able to give us confidence at the first meeting that he was able to address all our concerns. We had to leave town after the hardwood was installed, and we trusted Mike with a house key, and that he'd finish the work as promised at the time he promised. All the work was done when we got home and was done with more attention to detail than what he promised. It was wonderful. He completed the job the second week in May. There were no hidden costs, disclaimers, or other problems. We were so relieved to find a hardwood contractor we could trust, who was better than we expected. We found 3rd Generation Floors on Angie's List.
Description of Work: 1.removed carpet, pad, and cleaned underlayment on stairs, hallway, and two bedrooms. 2. secured underlayment to ensure that it would not squeak and was in great condition. 3. put in 3/4-inch hardwood floors on stairs, hallway, and two bedrooms/closets. 4. sanded hardwood 5. applied two finish coats and buffed. 6. did extra work creating transformation pieces, added inlaid maple to distinguish floors, fixed hardwood at front door. 7. finish with the half-round along the perimeter of hardwood and wall.

Mike did an extremely professional job in our home. He did not oversell; but neither did he cut corners. He cares about doing a quality job because it matters to him. I trust his expertise and his professional character. He communicates clearly and is straightforward. This quality makes him trustworthy and easy to work with. His work is of high quality. We plan to have him back in a year to add an extra coat on our kitchen floor. I would be eager to recommend 3rd Generation Hardwood Floors to anyone who cares about their home.

Mike Pitts, owner of 3rd Generation Hardwood Floors, did a beautiful job! We were very pleased! He initially came to our house and reviewed the project. After talking with him, it was apparent to us that he was very knowledgeable in his field. He discussed flooring types, transitions, and base shoes. He got down on his hands and knees to inspect the floors. The written estimate (and subsequent invoice) were very detailed. When he arrived to do the flooring, we gave him the key to our house. The old carpet removal and floor installation in both the Family Room and Walk-In Closet were done in 3 days. Nine days later his team returned to sand and finish the floors. The odor of the finish was very pungent, and Mike brought over a commercial fan but recommended staying in a hotel for a night which we did. The floors are beautiful. Mike Pitts is a perfectionist! We like that! The walk-in closet perfectly matches the main bedroom. You would never be able to tell that the walk in closet had previously been covered with glue and carpet. The Family Room is gorgeous! We highly recommend 3rd Generation Floors.
Description of Work: 1. Removed old carpet (including pad, tack strip, particle board, nails) from Family Room on main floor and a Large Walk-In Closet on 2nd floor. Disposed of carpet and debris. 2. Installed red oak hardwood floors in Family Room (approx. 200 square feet). This included sanding and finishing. Additional plywood to floor needed to be added first. 3. Two new flush mounted hot air vents with wood veneer (matching floor) were installed in Family Room. 4. Repaired floor in Walk-in Closet (approx 70 square feet). A prior owner had previously applied glue to this floor which Mike removed. 5. Furnished prime painted hemlock base shoe (which we painted to match existing wall color before installation). 6. Two large wood cold air returns repaired. Small areas of prior damaged floor identified and repaired.

The 100 year-old oak flooring was in poor condition with many cracks and some dark stains and areas where walking produced pronounced squeaks. The new and patched flooring was very well done, but of course new wood is of a lighter color than the 100 year-old flooring ... but the difference is visible only if you look for it. I'm amazed at how they eliminated the squeaks, and they did so with inset screws in a way that is almost invisible. Their machines capture almost all of the sanding dust, and they draped doorways so that none drifted through the other rooms. They did meticulous work with careful attention to corners and areas around pocket doors. The end result looks great! They were very professional in our interactions. The second coat of finish gives off very noxious fumes, but I rigged up a fan in an adjacent room to vent the fumes to the outside, resulting in very little odor in the rest of the house. Without that venting the fumes, even with plastic drapes in place, would have been bad. I'm VERY pleased with their work and with the end result.
Description of Work: 3rd Generation installed new white oak flooring in part of one room and patched another portion of missing flooring to match the existing flooring. They screwed down the flooring in places where it squeaked badly and then sanded and refinished the oak flooring in two large rooms, applying two coats of 'Swedish Glisa' finish.

It went very well. I felt like he really knows his stuff without having to be a flashy salesman about it. He presented us with clear descriptions of what he would do and what our different options were. He was available to start right away and when the schedule was pushed back, made room to get our project done before our deadline to move in to the place. We liked that he did the work himself. We will be calling him to work on any flooring projects we have in the future. He clearly loves the old wood flooring and knows how to keep them in good shape.
Description of Work: Mike refinished original hardwood floors throughout the upstairs of our 1890s house. They had to be sanded to get old layers of paint off and then sealed. He was thorough at checking the quality and was good about letting us know where he needed to replace boards and how much it would cost beforehand. He also supplied us in advance with baseboard shoes that he had had primed so that we could have our painter paint them with matching paint before he installed them. He first recommended that we use an oil based finish, which no doubt would have been gorgeous, but we chose to go with a water based one because of our newborn baby. He was fine with this and was great about presenting the different options that we could do.

Description of Work: I was very happy with Mike at 3rd Generation from beginning to end. Mike spent over an hour going over the floor issues with me and I felt comfortable when I received his estimate that it was going to be complete and accurately reflect all the issues that needed addressed . When I received his estimate I found it to be clear and concise. One area that I was grateful was Mike's frequent communication with me. 3rd Generation does beautiful work. It was a pleasure to watch. Mike, the owner, was on site for all the work. He had two helpers at various times, and both clearly meet his high standards of craftsmanship. Every aspect of the job was professionally done, from the bid to the bill. Mike wasn't the lowest bidder, but he was very reasonable and we were impressed with him during the bidding process, He immediately identified all the issues with our floors and gave us options for dealing with them. In a few places he had to replace boards and match the existing floor; the patches are absolutely invisible. He and his crew were on time, meticulous, and considerate. And the overall quality of the work is superb. Mike's family really has been doing this work for three generations, and it shows.
