Lawn, landscape, pruning, tree care, yard cleanup, lawn insect & disease treatments, lawn fertilization & lime, deep root feeding/fertilization & injections for insect/disease control in trees.
I contracted with this company even though they were more expensive than the other companies I interviewed because they stated in their contract that they would provide weed control and most important to me they would trim the trees and shrubs up to 15 feet. The tree and shrub trimming was very important to me since I have bamboo and laurel shrubs. Both these plants need to be trimmed on a regular basis or they will take over. I was told back when they started in March that they could not trim the shrubs until after the flowering shrubs finished blooming. At the time, my main concern was the weeds that were rapidly taking over the entire yard so I could wait on the shrubs. After asking twice for them to do some weed control, they sprayed everything with something that killed two of my strawberry plants and nearly killed my canna lilies. I still have weeds growing in the yard, walkways, grass and flower beds alike. I am having to get out every weekend and spray and pull to keep the weeds from taking over again. I have started doing what I can on my own to trim the shrubs. I am also trimming and pulling the planted ground cover and pulling out the unwanted english ivy. My neighbors have started asking me if I am paying this company to only mow my grass and periodically edge the lawn. After the first couple of visits that is what this company's service has become. They never aerated the lawn as indicated in the contract. I honestly don't know if they ever fertilize but if they do it does not include weed control. In the last three weeks I have seen a decline in the quality of even their mowing. It is obvious they only do one quick pass over the lawn because the lawn looks very uneven especially in the backyard. Two weeks ago it almost looked like it had been trimmed with a line trimmer it was so ragged. I think this is a "mom and pop" company that has more on than they can deliver. If you are looking for more than just grass mowing and edging, this is not the company to choose.

Response from Ornamental Tree & Shrub LLC
It is with great concern that we have received a complaint from you via Angie’s List last Tuesday evening. Please allow me to try and address these problems as stated in your letter as we have never personally met or had the opportunity to do a walk-through of your landscape with you and so are unaware of your likes and dislikes with regard to plant material, ie planted ground covers. After our initial cleanup in March we treated the front, side and back lawns for moss and weeds, we also applied fertilizer and lime and did a weed spray in the ornamental planting beds. The next week the dead moss was raked out and the lawns were over-seeded. The planted ground cover was not sprayed as you never informed us that this was a problem and you wanted it gone. On April 2nd I called you when we got to the job site as I saw you had pulled out handfuls of the ground cover and left it in piles, and asked if you wanted me to kill the roots and asked you to please stop pulling as it is Round Up needs to adhere to the leaves and be trans-located to the root system to effectively kill the plants. During this conversation I also asked you if you wanted us to remove the pile of bricks in your yard. You said no, you wanted the ivy removed from the half dead Cork Screw Willow growing in the side hedge. At this time I told you that this was beyond your scope of work as we only prune up to 15 ft. I am attaching a photo of Dean who is 6ft tall holding a Pole-Saw that is 15ft tall standing next to the ivy tree in question. The planted ground cover in the ornamental planting beds was treated but we do not do weed control in vegetable gardens, herb gardens or fruit gardens. Please refer to item 6 in your attached Landscape Maintenance program. The strawberries and Calla lily you are referring to in your letter are in an area we never sprayed. As to your concerns about pruning, to date we have pruned the Japanese Maple, Rhododendrons, Camellia, Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo), Big Leaf Privet hedge on the left side on the driveway, removed the hanging lower limbs from the Plum tree, Ash tree and Spruce. Today we cut back some of the Black Bamboo as you mentioned it in your letter. With regard to fertilizer, all the lawns were fertilized in March, May and again on the 25th June as it was raining. Weed control on lawns is applied every three months. During the period you mentioned in your letter when the mowing looked ragged was in the last two weeks of May. Between the 17th and 31st of May it rained non-stop, a total of 4.5” of rain. It is impossible to achieve a manicured looking cut when the lawn is that wet and the ground is soggy, it is also not impossible to apply Weed and Feed under those conditions. Your contract does include spring aeration. Aerate all our clients lawns between February of every year, your lawns will be done at this time as well. The Laurel hedges in the back yard will be trimmed in the Fall-Winter months, any serious problem areas will be trimmed back as needed (storm/wind damage). Please refer to item 10. Below. I think the best solution to this problem is to set up a meeting on Tuesday July 16, 2013 which is one of our service dates but will allow you enough time to make arrangements to meet with us and do walk through of your property. That way we will know what your likes and dislikes are and we will do everything we can to give you the lovely garden you deserve. During our service today we noticed the lawns are very dry especially the front lawn, please try to deep watering during this dry hot spell. I have included a copy of our Landscape Maintenance program and attached a photo. The program we recommend for this property is as follows: Ultimate Green Lawn & Landscape 1. Weekly mowing and blowing during the growing season and as needed during the winter. 2. Edge lawn areas every alternate week or as needed. 3. Fertilize lawn as needed. 4. Control weeds and moss in the lawn. 5. Balance pH in the soil. 6. Weed control and periodic raking in ornamental planting beds. 7. Trim perennials as they die back. 8. Leaf cleanup. 9. Pruning of shrubs after bloom. 10. Pruning of all other shrubs; hedges and ornamental trees (up to 15’) in Fall-Winter months or when needed. 11. Dead heading roses and perennials to promote continuous flowering during the growing season. 12. Aerate lawn in the spring. 13. Over seed lawn as needed. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns on my mobile phone 503 970-2596 or you can email me at otslawncare@gmail.com
