The work was performed over a handful of days in the summer. He showed up when he said he would. There was a lot of dust that ended up around our home from the mortar grinding, for what it's worth, it's going to create dust to grind it out. The new mortar was put in along with a crown and tile. On top of this an top-opening damper was installed, and flashing updated/improved around the roofline. It functions with a wire that goes down to the fireplace and a spring mechanism that releases it open (the damper).
A few items that came up are that the grey-water from the mortar mixing was dumped in the grass--this just caused some grey spots but the grass was dead due to the drought and heat this summer. I still would have preferred it to be dumped off in the corner of the yard where there was just mulch/no vegetation and is obviously an unused area. Beyond that an oval flue tile was installed on top on which the rectangular top-closing damper was installed. This created small gaps at the edges where the rectangular footing overhung the oval shape of the tile. The damper had a dent on one corner, and did not seem to close flush. Finally sometime in September I noticed the crown had cracks in the mortar from the curing/settling process.
For all of the functional concerns, Cliff listened to me and addressed them all with professionalism and ease. He used black flashing material and black caulk to fully close off the areas where the rectangular damper over-hung the oval flue tile. It looks flawless. He ordered a new damper cap from the manufacturer to replace the one with the dent in the corner. He re-ground the crown where it had cracked, and installed a layer of tamoseal, a fixing agent that encapsulated the crown and covers all cracks and weather-proofs it. And finally he came back to tighten the spring/wire on the damper so the closure was completely tight.
While I would have preferred some of the issues not to arise in the first place, the response to them was the embodiment of excellent customer service and at the end of the day the issues were taken care of, so I am happy and have a functional and improved fireplace and chimney.
Cliff handled the unforseen problems in a fair and rapid manner. He even sent a follow up note after the job was completed thanking me for giving him the business.
While on the roof, Cliff also looked at the condition of it for me (it's in excellent shape) and will be contacting me later this week for an estimate on house painting.
"Thank you for your report. I appreciate it very much! Cliff"
