It went terribly. Please see the email chain below. This company asked us the home owner to do the original measurements (obviously so they would not have to hire an estimator.) We did and they showed up without material on the day the work was to start. They wanted to charge us to go back and get it. We said no. They pleaded for another chance at the work up to and including a one hour credit they referred to as a "remorse credit." We agreed and by this time a "journeyman" with their company had taken all measurements and provided a complete estimate (company owner tried to claim it was a "quick estimate" but I had evidence to the contrary in their email from the owner himself.) They came back out and the $1100 estimate turned out to be a bill for $2100. Their "journeyman" was at our house for 2 days and never said a word about doubling the bill nor did their office, in fact told me he was trying to bring it in less than the original $1100 quote which the owner never addressed. They found one additional 16 foot board that had to be replaced and I said ok to a reasonable estimate increase and was then taken advantage of with a bill that doubled. Do not use this company. Sadly - the physical work itself was fine - but as I told the owner - quality is more than just nails and boards it's communication, it's honesty, it's fairness, which we didn't experience. Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2017 3:32 PM To: 'Brian Bartholomew' ; Cc: Michael Megahan ; Richard Griffiths ; Sue Bowman Subject: RE: Invoice 5849 from In Your Home Brian – we will pay the invoice in full but I have to tell you this is extremely disappointing. Couple comments. You refer to the $1100 as a “quick guestimate” which is not accurate. We have all of the correspondence from you and in part you previously said before the job started – copied and pasted from your e-mail: “If you are ready to proceed please advise and I will have a journeyman staff member swing by to confirm materials and dimensions.” Nothing was a surprise – we discussed it all with Rich – other than one $40 board that had carpenter ants that he had to go and get and replace that was not forseeable….in no way, shape or form did anyone communicate that the bill was going to more than double – nor was this a surprise or should it have been a “quick guestimate.” I don’t understand the ethics or the math of how the original estimate more than doubled minus a partial credit. We will pay the bill though. You mention being completely satisfied - work is much more than the way the siding looks when done – it’s a no surprise – no doubling of an estimate – no failure to communicate to the home owner when your personnel are on their property for several hours. From: Brian Bartholomew [mailto:brianb@pdx.iyhusa.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2017 2:45 PM To:>; Cc: Michael Megahan ; Richard Griffiths ; Sue Bowman Subject: RE: Invoice 5849 from In Your Home I did check in with our team and can share the following: • More clarity with communication would be helpful to head off misunderstandings and disappointments like this. From everything I have gathered, it sounds like Rich did a good job keeping you informed of what he was finding and that more would be required in order to get a quality result. And he stayed later on the first day trying to get things closed up and in better shape. Rich conveyed that he felt he had good alignment with you as to the required work and what was needed. It would have been smart had we calculated what those additional hours and materials were going to cost you and given you a dollar amount heads up so you could have had that $ verification before the second day’s work began. The very nature of time and materials project is to spend less time estimating and budgeting and more time just getting the work done. • I also understand that additional lineal footages and scope of work was added which also contributed to required work and budget spend. • Our initial $1100 reference was clearly indicated as a quick guestimate and that our terms of agreement were an hourly rate plus materials for a talented journeyman like Rich to make repairs to your home. And that you would only be billed for actual work performed… Hopefully you are completely satisfied with the quality of the work performed. I know Rich was in fact there working diligently on your behalf so only actual work hours are being billed. I will send separate email regarding your balcony project. Respectfully, Brian and Team

We are disappointed to receive such an imbalanced review but are not surprised. There were warning signs from the very beginning with this client. The client had shared that he had multiple contractors out to bid their job but no one was coming back to him with a bid. We discussed how IYH handles repairs like theirs and offered to do the work on a time and materials basis given the very nature of their dryrot and damaged wood repairs. We did have a mis-step on the originally scheduled work day. The client wasn't charged for the time and we asked for another opportunity to get them taken care of, and offered them a discount for their inconvenience, all to which they agreed. On our second visit, our staff (one of our best, a real professional) did a quality repair. The documents provided the client at the very beginning clearly indicated the terms of the service offer and we performed to the agreement which is undoubtedly why they paid the bill. We could have done a better job keeping the client informed as to what the total project cost was after day one. The total project was two day's work. Many clients are willing to get those small, random repairs addressed on a time and materials basis. It is evident that this client agreed to a time and materials project but in the end was wanting a fixed price or not to exceed repair. When the contractor is under-writing all the risk then the bid needs to be sufficiently higher to cover that risk. We work very hard to communicate with clients this dynamic of time and materials versus fixed bid so they can make an informed decision to move forward with their projects. Again, we too are very disappointed with this review. Ugh.

I pre paid for 8 hours of handyman service using an Angieslist special. The guy was only here 6 hours and left. No note, no call, no email - no explanation whatsoever. When I contacted the office, I was told that he would come back. I've repeatedly asked when this can be scheduled and receive no response. The guy did a good job power washing, but could not fix the toilet or repair the gutters. I still have a lot to finish and want to hire a handyman, but not this company. I can't believe they don't bother to give me the 8 hours I paid for. The whole point of Angieslist is to use contractors you can trust. Really disappointed.

On the day of the originally scheduled work we had a client emergency which required quick intervention with our staff which delayed our arrival time to this client's home. Communications with the client did happen but evidently not to her satisfaction and for that we are sorry. This client will get more than the 8 hours of service paid for and their project was scheduled for a return visit during after- hours this last weekend (before any review was revealed to us). We go to great lengths to ensure clients get the full value of services provided. Even if we get flamed via email or social media. Our goal is to create great working relationships with our clients and our 14 + years in business and the vast majority of client reviews reveal that we work very hard to earn that repeat business. We will continue to aspire to do great works and build great relationships.
In Your Home did a fantastic job! All employees were friendly, courteous, punctual, and respectful. All employees were skilled and reliable, thanks to Rich, Pat, Michael, Mike, Joe. I'd like to recognize Rich, he was amazing. He worked tirelessly every day, and his craftsmanship is top notch. There was water damage under the tub, the house is 1979 vintage. Once the bathroom was gutted, it became clear that the water damage affected the subfloor. The subfloor was 2x6+, not available off the shelf. Rich created, on the fly, tongue n groove replacement boards. Rich did all the elements of the remodel, added windows, carpentry, plumbing, dry wall, flooring, tiling, and all the finish work. We are very happy with both bathrooms. We recommend In Your Home to anyone looking for honest, competent, and reliable home improvement specialists. We, feel the $11,000 for both bathrooms was well worth the investment.
Description of Work: In Your Home remodeled our 2 bathrooms. As do-in-yourselfers we had always done home repair and improvements. Health issues had sidelined us. In Your Home picked up where we left off on the first bath and did down-to-the-studs remodel on the the second bathroom.

We ended up having a very disappointing experience with In Your Home. We felt they over-promised and under-delivered on our smaller remodeling project. We stopped the project at the design stage due to poor responsiveness and unjustified ballooning of the project budget and scheduling. We had a very detailed and satisfying initial meeting 3/30/17 with them (2+ hours) where we discussed scope, design, and scheduling details. Brian was very thorough in collecting measurements, photos, etc. of our bathrooms and kitchen. Mary patiently listened to our design concerns and provided us with some example options. We asked for a rough estimate of the project costs at the end of the meeting, and Brian told us it would be 30-39k depending on material selection and that the work could be completed in 3-4 weeks and that they could start once material selections were finalized. We told them we had to have the work finished by July 2017 so this sounded very reasonable. We got a few bids but ended up choosing INY because of their lower price, scheduling availability, and experience with accessible design (the remodel was the home of my parents who are seniors) and working on projects in older condo buildings. One of the items we had discussed including was a step-less threshold for the shower enclosure. Brian said that the concrete floor of the condo building would prevent them from lowering the floor but that they could design a gradual ramped transition into and out of the shower (they had done this before), which sounded like a good solution to us. After the initial meeting, we decided we wanted to reduce costs so we took out several major items from the project scope (emailed Brian 4/3/17): we decided to just go with a traditional step threshold for the shower; we decided not to replace the kitchen ceiling lighting (also involving installing new sheetrock for the kitchen ceiling), and also removed installing shelving in the utility closet). We anticipated that this would allow our budget to remain in the lower/mid part of the 30-39k range. Brian replied that this would lower the the budget and also lowered the design fee. On 4/10/17 we accepted their design agreement so that they could start a detailed design review of the project. Over the next few weeks we emailed primarily with Mary to finalize material selections. On 5/4/17, we finished material selection - the process had taken much longer than expected - sometimes it would take a few days to receive a reply/info from Mary, and then we were away for the last week of April. We weren't overly concerned at this point since we still had nearly 2 months remaining in our schedule and Brian emailed confirming that the work would take 3-4 weeks. Throughout the process we had emphasized selecting materials with lower price points, and Mary assured us that the options she provided were reasonably priced. At no point did Mary or Brian indicate that any of our material selections would change the project budget. After another week, we received the detailed design agreement 5/11/17, indicating a new higher budget of $43k with increased timing for the actual work being 5-6 weeks. When we probed Mary and Brian 5/12/17 for the reason for the inflated costs they blamed the cost of the selected bathroom fixtures and jetted tub. The project scope had always included replacing an existing jetted tub (in fact we went to a showroom 3/31/17 and had already told Mary the model we selected). We also knew the cost of the jetted tub going in (provided quote by showroom). The fixture line we selected is in stock at home depot and the costs are not higher end. Regardless, the costs of the fixtures and tub cannot account for the bump in price of over $4k from the high cost range that they gave us. We also expressed our concern about the longer scheduling since it would put us near our hard deadline of 7/1. Based on our feedback Brian said they would review the design document and tighten up the budget. It took another week (after calling/emailing several times) before we received the revised budget 5/19 - from what we could see the project scope was not changed (perhaps reduced slightly to cut some corners) but the budget was now even higher $44+ k and the timing even longer 7-8 weeks. This was like a slap in the face to us - we felt like IYH knew we had time constraints and that we had no alternatives to get the project done on time and so were pressuring us by increasing costs and timing to accept their terms. Because we had a hard deadline of July 1st, because of the slow responsiveness to address our concerns, and because of the unjustified increase in costs and scheduling , we no longer trusted in In Your Home to complete the project on time and on budget so we decided not to continue with the project. When we communicated our dissatisfaction, Brian acknowledged and apologized for the slow responsiveness due to handling concurrent projects and a planned absence. In our opinion, knowing our schedule/timeline and being an experienced professional who specializes in managing remodeling projects, communication with us should have been much more responsive and open. Brian maintained that the rough cost estimates provided at our initial meeting were by no means limits. Perhaps, but we were never provided with proper justification for the increase in the pricing beyond that range. Furthermore, our remodeling project was small in scope and an experienced contractor (as In Your Home asserts to be) should be able to accurately provide a cost range for the project, certainly within a 20% range of 33-39K. Moreover, we significantly reduced the project scope to keep costs within this range. Overall we feel that we were mislead regarding budget and timing in order to secure the bid.

We are also disappointed with the final outcome and for communication and schedule disconnects with this client. Some clarifying points: -- On our initial meeting we discussed the remodeling of two full bathrooms and some kitchen upgrades and very quickly (10 minutes or less) ventured a guestimate as to the likely budget. While small relative to some remodels, please know there are plenty of details to consider and the planning, proposal writing and budget development required to really understand what a project will cost is the only way the professional remodeler will know and be able to provide the client with budget and scheduling offers. We explained this process to the client and showed them examples of other client projects and they seemed to understand and agree. Then they engage us in a simple "Design Agreement" to develop the conceptual design(s), proposal and related budgets to implement their projects based on their to-be-determined product choices and desired features. We believe the client has unreasonably locked in on the initial budget discussion and seems unwilling to acknowledge the process we agreed to and to work with us to refine or change the scope to fit their desired financial investment. This is usually an interactive process which requires collaboration and a shared understanding which seems absent in this case. And now, based upon a full understanding of the project scope and all its requirements, the initial guestimate was too low. We will exercise more care to expand our ranges when guestimating and take additional time to ensure clients understand our process. --Scheduling and scheduling commitments are a result of the planning process. Until the client has approved the designs, proposal and budget, product orders and the commitments of staff and subcontractors is not possible. We acknowledge that our team effort to generate and finalize the planning documents was delayed (the result of multiple factors) which added pressure to an already aggressive timeline. This coupled with client push back on budget and desire for justification of why it was different from the initial guestimate further delayed the Go / No Go decision. Over the last 14 years we have completed hundreds of projects and it's especially disappointing to acknowledge that we had a part in this project falling short of expectation. -- Client was issued a full refund of the small design retainer fee. Finally, we are good people and we are more than fair. We go to great lengths to build lasting relationships with clients based on respect and trust. Our reputation is everything to us and we do our best to make things right when we have fallen short. We appreciate the client's feedback and will apply lessons learned to be better with each new project. Respectfully, Brian and team

In all the job went smoothly. We'd hire them again for handymen work. We kept in mind this was a handyman job not a home stylist job. We have not had any problems with the floor since (there was a weird smell before from the moisture soaked sub-floor).
Description of Work: Our dishwasher leaked and we needed to have the sub-floor replaced and vinyl put down (there originally wasn't any under the dishwasher). Neither my husband nor I knew how to do the work, so we decided to give IYH a try. I read through all the negative reviews first. I always check to see how companies respond (defensive, apologetic, etc.). I decided to give this company a try. Since I am alone during the day (husband works), I am not that comfortable with workers coming in when he isn't home. My husband called them to schedule. He even sent them an exact list of what needed to be done, the materials we would supply, and the materials IYH needed to supply. The idea here was to keep IYH from needing to make a long trip to the hardware store for stuff they did not have. When the worker showed up he was polite and professional. He took a look at what needed to be done and set to work on it. It did turn out he did not have a strong enough blade to cut through the sub-floor, so he had to go out and get one. I timed him while he was gone. He came back about 30 minutes later (so out and back fairly quickly). They charge for time and travel if they have to go get supplies they don't have and need for the job. While he was cutting out the old flooring and putting in the new, my husband was texting me questions and I was asking the person what exactly what steps he was doing and the order in which the steps were being done. He politely answered all my questions and did not make me feel dumb at all. The job took about two hours. When all was done, the worker asked if we found them on AL. I said yes. He made sure to give us the discount and did not try and squeeze extra money out of us.

They were professional and on time. Their work was excellent and their prices were good. I highly recommend them, we will continue to use them!
Description of Work: They did some work in my garage and they hung 2 large horizontal mirrors.
We had an excellent experience with this contractor. John and his team were diligent, and easy to communicate with. They also cleaned up their work at the end of each day, and treated our home with care. We found this contractor to be one of the most trustworthy and reliable contractors we have worked with, and we continue to call them for referrals or when we have random home repair questions, etc. I recommend this contractor to anyone looking to hire in the Portland metro area.
Description of Work: We initially hired them to do a relatively small bit of work - cabinet removal and replacement - and ultimately hired them to do a bunch of additional projects, including a new tub and shower surround, new plumbing and flooring in the bathroom, painting of the entire interior of our home, and some minor remodeling.

He had an add handyman for a day for $600. I had a door that needed to be replaced. I paid through Angies list--I would not recommand that. First, he clearly could not fit it into his schedule. Second, he began by telling me that what I wanted to have done was not covered by the $600 and it would cost X amount instead. Not at ALL what the add said. I decided to get a refund, which he did, but it took forever and several phone calls. Finally I had to call Angles list directly and they gave me the refund out of the goodness of their support services heart because it was past the allowable date for a refund. I found a contractor the old fashioned way and was able to get the work done almost emmediately for half of what this person wanted to charge me. I would absolutely not do this again. In fact, the number of times Angles list has worked well is starting to be so much less than the times it has worked well. I'm considering just closing this account and never doing this again.

We are sorry the client had a poor experience and believe with just a little attention to detail could have avoided much of the hassle they experienced. Our storefront offer was super simple and straightforward. The client either didn’t read it or assumed too much when purchasing it. Essentially the client had some doors to be repaired or replaced and wanted work done within one week of the initial contact. Once the purchase was made (peak season 1st of June) we responded same day and alerted that the desired service dates were likely not available. Within a matter of days we were able to obtain the client’s phone number (not originally provided) and called to discuss the projects desired and required materials to complete the repair. In this case the timeline to do the work was the sticking point. Within another day the client informed us they had found another contractor and were requesting a refund. With all storefront offers Angie’s List handles all the payments and refunds. The service provider has little control over this portion of the process. We reached out a few times with the client to determine if they had received their refund and have concluded the client failed to notify Angie’s List of this request. Our recommendation – contact the service provider and discuss your desired scope of work and timeline in advance of purchasing storefront offers especially if you have a tight timeline within which to work. Again, we’re sorry you had difficulty with this storefront purchase and are glad you were successful in getting your work completed and a proper refund. Happy Holidays

The install, once it began, went as scheduled. Trying to get this company to respond is very difficult. The fence they installed summer before last is already deteriorating. I've left 2 phone messages and can not get them to respond. Today I sent an email through Angies list, hopefully they'll respond this time. I will not use this company in the future. The work was completed and the porch is in good condition. The fence was constructed using less than quality material and this company is not responding to my requests for assistance.

Since this initial posting we have discussed and debrief with the client. We acknowledge that the client experienced delays when communicating with us. We regret the difficulties and are striving to continually improve our responsiveness. Regarding the quality of work – we have confirmed both the quality of materials used as well as the installation methods and attest without exception that this is an excellent implementation. The problem in this case, “three bowed bottom cross rails” were the result of the client’s action after our work was complete. The client installed 6+ inches of river rock up against the bottom of the fence which resulted in the deformation of some of the bottom rails. Further this rock was adjacent to the driveway such that vehicle compaction could have exacerbated the problem. In Your Home, as a courtesy and at no charge to the client, returned and replaced those bowed materials. The client has since removed the rock from pressing against the fencing. Again, sorry for the delayed communications and I’m gratified to confirm our quality and workmanship are very much intact and uncompromised. We wish this client well.

I had a lengthy list of things for this outfit to work on. I'm a landlord with steady work and looking for an ongoing handyman. I found scheduling with them to be very difficult, especially with having to coordinate with tenants. The first appointment was for 3 PM. We waited for two hours, finally I texted at 5 asking for an ETA. Got a call that he was stuck in traffic and couldn't make it. I expressed it would be nice to hear from them if they couldn't make the scheduled time rather than having to track them down. Next time he made it out as scheduled. Changing the tub spout went fine. The proceeding two or three times I tried to schedule again resulted in cancelled and missed appointments where again I had to track them down to find out where they were, answer: not at my house and not coming. The work I did get out of them was fine, working with them was difficult.

We regret the difficulty as described by this client. Our records do confirm that a service tech vehicle breakdown created a chain of events which we did not handle well including keeping the client informed. The challenge for many landlords is to find qualified help at a fair price and then schedule repair appointments. For some of our other landlord clients, we have successfully accepted the responsibility and communicated directly with tenants (as authorized by the landlord) in order to minimize the hassle of scheduling and performing the work. Our goal is to delight clients by exceeding expectations and effectively managing communications. We also value long-term relationships with clients and being that trusted resource for solving home maintenance and repair needs. Again, sorry for your less than favorable experience and we wish you the very best.

Initial contact with Bradley was excellent. Quick turnaround on the estimate and scheduling the tradesperson, Pat, to come out. Pat was on time and it seemed it would all go smoothly. Then, there were issues. It appeared the work was mostly done (windowsills and stabilizing a porch board or two), however the communication regarding the rotted porch boards and whether or not additional work would need to be done was poor. I was quite surprised to receive an invoice when there were still soft porch boards that I could push my big toe through. This delayed my ability to get timely bids on exterior painting work (still struggling to find a painter who can fit me in this summer, by the way). Made 3 phone calls and sent 2 e-mails and finally heard back when I requested that everything be done in writing from now on. The work was finished without additional charge, but extremely frustrating experience and I really hope I do manage to get a painter this summer, since that was the reason why I needed the other minor work done in the first place.
Description of Work: Remove rotted porch boards and inspect for damaged supports. If no damage is found, replace boards with new. If structural damage is found, assess and advise client of necessary repairs. Replace bottom section (1 x 2) of three exterior basement window sills.

The challenges of this repair were compounded at the start as the client wasn’t on-site when the site was evaluated and work performed. Regretfully our staff upon initial evaluation missed some dryrot spots such that a return trip was necessary. Demand for our services is at an all time high and scheduling a quick return trip during this period was problematic. Ultimately the additional repair work was completed at no additional charge in consideration for the delay. We regret the frustration our client experienced and have worked to repair this relationship. We have connected the homeowner with a painting contractor who is available immediately, does good work and very competitively priced. We wish the homeowner successful completion of their painting project.

I received a response from Bradley quickly, requesting details and pictures, if possible. He initially had a spot right away, but I couldn't take it because it was a work day with important meetings. He offered 2 other choices, an upcoming Saturday and the following Friday. I asked for the Saturday, but never heard back. On Saturday I emailed early to find out if someone was coming, but didn't hear back. The following Monday he responded asking if I still wanted to try Friday. From there things went well. Pat called Thursday night confirming a time and my address. He arrived promptly Friday morning. He was very polite, friendly and efficient. He worked from 9:00 to 4:30. This included a trip to the hardware store for an adapter for the InstaHot. He also said I would be credited for the unused time. My only complaint with the whole process was that I didn't receive my requested estimated time/cost for each project from Bradley so I could prioritize what I wanted, and that I did not receive a reply for my request for the offered time slot on the Saturday, causing me to have to take a day off work.
