Ed was easy to work with and responsive in communicating with me before, during and after the job. The quality of the work was excellent and the materials used were top shelf. Ed and his team were able to take on the job in a timely manner. They showed up on-time and finished the job efficiently. I have no hesitation hiring Ed for future work and I have already recommended him to my neighbors.

He was very nice and knowledgable. He answered all our questions and measured out our decks. He also left some decking samples with us to review. He spent approx an hour or so with us and said he would have an estimate to us within a week. It has now been at least 3 weeks and no estimate. Going with another company that has followed thru and wants our business.

Ed was very helpful. We were debating whether to build a composite deck or not. Ed took the time to show us one he had already built so that we could get a better idea. Ed is a hardworking individual and does due diligence and wants to make sure that his customers are fully satisfied.

Ed is a charming gentleman, who took a look at our deck and considered our dilemma of whether to try to find a hot tub to fit the hole in the deck, or to fill it in and put a bigger one on top. He gave us a fair ballpark figure, his best advice and several alternative options. We really appreciated his consideration and thoughtful advice. Although we’re still working through our choices, we would not hesitate to give him a call for any future projects. He’s not out to sell the highest price product, but rather, his goal is to meet the client’s needs in the best possible way.
Description of Work: I contacted Ed Gause’s office and explained that I just wanted a ball park idea of what it would cost to fill in the space in our deck that surrounds our “dead” hot tub on three sides. Rather than putting a new hot tub in the space, we were considering filling it in and putting a new one on top of the deck. I didn’t want Ed to use up his valuable time to come out to our place if I could give him the measurements over the phone. He said it was no problem and came the same day!

He does excellent work. He helped with some siding issues that were caused by the prior deck.. He kept me up to date with the project the whole time. He was a pleasure to work with and addressed all questions and concerns I had with the project. I would recommend him highly.
Description of Work: Ed and his crew removed and installed two new Cedar decks. Both decks were 4 to 8 feet off the ground. One deck was 10 x 12 feet and the other was 18 x14 feet. They both turned out beautiful.

It has been a year since our deck was built, but I wanted to post as we are still very pleased with the work done. Ed and his crew tore down my old dilapidated wood deck and constructed a new, beautiful Timbertech deck. He discovered the old deck was barely hanging onto the house by a nail or two, and had virtually no support system underneath. Our new deck was built to precise measurements with a framing design to compliment the house. Ed was professional, experienced, detailed, prompt and a pleasure to work with. We hope we can use him for other projects in the future.

We found our dream house. It had a scary upstairs deck and no privacy. Ed's design for the upstairs and downstairs decks were amazing. We love standing on the upstairs deck- it has gone from dangerous to darling. They are beautiful. Ed has always been prompt, reasonable and leaves the site clean. His helper, with whom he works side by side, was also skilled and pleasant. Ed only uses good wood, and could be underbid by people who use lesser quality wood. But, this being the Pacific Northwest, we always budget for good wood and really good craftsmanship. Ed's the best.
Description of Work: Removed and rebuilt an upper deck. Expanded a lower deck built around a new hot tub. He built the platform for the tub as well. The deck around the tub has privacy fencing with a craftsman style trellis along the top.

Design was superior to what others had suggested for our needs, and we love how the spindles provide a more open view of our greenspace, as well as the bonus of lower maintenance. Ed's pricing seemed more than fair, and both he and his help were hard workers, enduring continual storms to get the job done. He was also patient as we briefly pondered other material options. We feel fortunate to have contracted Ed for the work as we continually appreciate the fruits of his labor.
Description of Work: Proposed design and Built hottub deck as addition to small existing deck, straightened and strengthened existing deck and stairs, replaced wooden pickets with metal spindles integrating with new deck, added new synthetic tops and ADA handrails, and did custom work to house and provide entry to new curved-front hottub.

The beautiful deck is a joy to look at and is extremely sturdy and well-made. The ramps and concrete pad provide easy access to the deck for our elderly relatives. Ed's extensive experience and expert knowledge put him head and shoulders above the other contractors we talked with. His price was very competitive and we are extremely pleased with his work.

Ed is a true craftsman who delivers quality work on time. The mahogeny railing is beautiful, very well anchored on solid posts, and re-stained. The railing posts were seated to optimize the deck space. When Ed discovered that two of our deck stairs were structually deficient (while installing a post to support the deck stairs railing), he restructured the two lower stairs to provide better support. Ed ensured that both fence doors were reseated properly to ensure easy opening and a solid door closure. This had been a nagging problem for us when the previously installed fence posts warped. Ed made sure that the under-the-deck lattice was a solid barrier to animal entry. Every detail of the job was exactly as Ed defined it when quoting the job. Ed and his crew were always on time, worked hard and efficiently, and are very easy to communicate with. The cleanup was thorough. You will expecially enjoy Ed's jokes!
Description of Work: Ed and his crew constructed a mahogeny railing around our upper deck and bridge to our lower deck, built a lattice barrier under the entire deck to prevent our dog or any animals (eg skunks) from getting under our deck, and fixed two fence doors.

Ed responded to our request quickly, coming over and offering options for us to consider. He gave suggestions to make the stairs sturdier and suggested materials that would be lower maintenance. Once we had made our decision he quickly ordered the materials, stained the cedar pieces with our leftover stain so it would closely match the rest of the old deck. He and his helper arrived when they said, they were very professional and they cleaned everything up. Although we probably could have had the work done for less money, you get what you pay for and we are pleased with the work. We would not hesitate to recommend him or to use him again.
Description of Work: Replaced set of steps from the existing second story deck down to the yard. He replaced railings as well and added a midway support under the stairs. He used Timbertek material for stair treads, choosing a color that perfectly matched the existing stain on the original outdoor wood on the deck. Deck railings have black powder coated aluminum spindles which has dressed them up.

The new deck is beautifully constructed - it's a joy to look at and is extremely well made. He did very careful, thorough work. I felt his price was high but then again, the deck probably wouldn't have been as nice if I'd used the company with the much lower bid. Ed was also able to do the job very quickly - he started the job less than a week after I first contacted him about it. Everyone else was booked out for 4-6 weeks.
Description of Work: Finished the contruction of a partially built deck in tight-knot, kiln-dried cedar (6.5x30'). The deck was approximately 25-30% completed when Ed started work. Some of the previous work had been done poorly, necessitating extra steps to correct the problems. The work took 2 1/2 days to complete (most of the time two men were on the job). He hauled away all the old wood and brought new wood to complete the job. He also cut some thin sheet metal for me at no cost.

It was disappointing to say the least. I really liked Ed, and I hate to leave him a negative review, but he completely failed to follow through.
Description of Work: Ed was really friendly, but he completely forgot our first appointment. I finally called when he hadn't showed up 45 minutes after our appointment time, and he had no recollection of the appointment. He found it written down and apologized profusely. We rescheduled for the following day, and he did show up, though he arrived about 15 minutes late. I was undeterred, based on his positive reviews. I described the project I had in mind, a large backyard deck, and he helped me map it out. We looked at deck material samples, and I pick the one I liked best. I was excited and ready to proceed. Ed said he would prepare a quote within a few days and get back to me. Months later, I haven't heard another word.

Ed arrived precisely at the appointed time to provide an estimate. The deck in question serviced an upstairs bedroom and was in really bad shape ... the railing was rotting and some of the deck boards were barely able to support weight, and the top of one of the support posts also had rot. The posts seemed okay where they disappeared into the lower deck, but some of the joists showed rot, as well. Unfortunately, they were cantilevered into the house and would have to be sawed off and attached to a ledger. Ed explained all the options, we talked about various types of decking (I wanted it to match, as close as possible, the material used on the lower deck, which he told me was no longer used. I also asked that the railing approximate the railing on the lower deck (metal bars anchored in cedar rails). Ed said he could do all of that and told me he would send an estimate later that afternoon, but guessed that the cost would be about $2500. He called, as promised, and confirmed that his rough estimate was correct. He also said he could pick up the material and start the job the next Monday (it was Saturday), and be done by Tuesday. I was very pleased with that news ... the bid was competitive with all but one other bid I had been given (and that one lower bid was from a painter who was bidding on a paint job for the entire house). I am of the school that I would rather have a deck guy build my deck than a painter, and being done by Tuesday rather than waiting a month to have the job start was an added bonus. I said "yes." Ed arrived on Monday morning promptly. John accompanied him. The two went directly to work. They were efficient, fast, and very professional. Ed encouraged me to watch, and explained every step of the process if I asked. He showed me all the materials he was using and explained why he used them instead of materials. The rot on the upper posts and in the decking was worse than we thought, but a real problem emerged when the whole deck was down ... the rot was really bad where the railing had been attached, and it seemed that there was also rot at the base of the posts. We discussed multiple options for addressing that problem, and agreed to take up some of the main deck in order to better see what was going on. Oops. The posts needed to be replaced. We again discussed options, agreed on a couple of alternatives, and he began calling around to see which lumber stores might have two 16' posts on hand. After knowing what was available, we again discussed options and prices, and made a decision. Ed called the store back and ordered two posts. He cleaned up, went to the store to pick up the posts and router the edges to round them off (to match the posts on the main deck), promising to be back the next day at 8:00 AM to finish. He and John returned the next morning ... at 8 ... and went right to work. They were done by 2:30 or 3. Again, whenever I expressed an interest, he and John explained what they were doing and answered all of my questions. My wife had a doctor's appointment and we had to leave at 2:00. I left a check for the new total (additional charges for the two posts and the additional time to prep and install them ... as we agreed the day before) before they were finished. When we came home, they were gone. The job was finished, and everything cleaned up nicer than before they arrived. They had offered to leave the wood behind, if I wanted to burn it, but I asked them to haul it. Other than a very attractive (and strong) deck in place of the old rotten one, there was hardly a sign they had been there. This was a very satisfactory experience, and I highly recommend Ed to anyone needing a deck. He is very good at what he does, but is also resourceful and more than able to adjust and adapt to whatever turns up.

The front & back decks were in serious need of replacement. The wood had rotted and seemed unsafe. I may have been able to go another winter before replacing, and did consider that since this old house needs so many repairs but really didn't want to put off the front since it's our access into the house. After bids from three companies I chose Ed Gause Construction based on his experience, willingness to offer alternative ideas that could save money, the price of the bids, and because his crew was small and he also does the work himself. He also spends time building the professional relationship with his clients. Mr. Gause came out on a weekend to give me a bid on both decks. I also asked for info on building a small set of stairs off the front deck so we could finally have access to the side yard, something I've wanted since buying this house 11 years ago. To my amazement I was able to afford the front deck and stairs. The back deck was also very reasonable but I just didn't have enough resources to commit to replacing the back at the same time. When it came time to start the work, he came out again with copies of the contract and we went over the work plan again. He would start work the next day. As promised the work was completed within 2 days. He patched/sealed the cracks in the original railing and left it in better condition than it was. He also addressed a few concerning spots that I noticed in the new boards. Basically there was a sliver coming off one side of a board that he sealed, and another spot that was easily smoothed out. 2 weeks later I noticed a 12inch crack in one of the steps, when I notified Ed he replaced the board within 2 days. It also looks like he tightened down the side stair railings. So nice!! I've spent almost every day sitting on the front deck with my dogs since it has been re-built. I wven considered sleeping out there during the heat wave.... We are very happy! I will definitely call Ed when it's time to do the back deck. Thank you!

Ed came out and quoted us on deck repair and putting in new stairs. He also quoted extending the deck but we decided not to have that part done yet. He did an amazing job. Stunning appearance to his work. He came out when he said he would, and had the whole thing finished in a couple days. He ended up doing more than he charged us for, and added very nice trim that we weren't expecting. Plus, he gave me some ideas for some extra work that I'm going to do myself on the deck. His pricing was very reasonable considering the quality materials he uses. Ed is very personable and knows his stuff. I plan on using him in the future when we get ready to have more done. I highly recommend him if your looking for any sort of deck work. Thanks Ed!

This was our second time hiring Ed to build a deck for us - and my wife and I couldn't be happier with the result! Our job was finished on schedule, on budget, and it looks better than I imagined! Even though we've used Ed before, I still solicited several bids as part of my due diligence. Just like the last time, the bid from Ed was a good value. Not the lowest, but also not the highest by a long shot. And since we knew from previous experience the top level quality of work he does, it was a no-brainer to hire him again. Ed's been building decks for a long time, and his extensive experience is the reason I feel total confidence in hiring him. I get the feeling that he's already built just about any kind of deck you can imagine, probably several times. That means you don't have to worry about any surprises with Ed. I've learned first hand over the course of two deck builds, that you can really trust his estimate about how long something will take, or how much it will cost. That's really important to me. Ed's experience also means he can offer very solid advice and suggestions to make your project cost less and maybe even look better than you might have imagined. In our case, after carefully listening to my wife describe what she wanted, he offered a simple design suggestion that she hadn't even considered that made our deck look even better - without creating any additional expense! Finally, I should mention that Ed has a great crew that works along side him. They're friendly and professional, doing a good job of cleaning up at the end of each day. They are a regular team of friends and family, that have worked with Ed for a long time. If you need a deck built, hire Ed Gause Construction! That's what I tell my friends!

Ed came to our house twice to discuss our project prior to accepting his bid. We had him create two bids, which he did just as requested. Ed only gives verbal bids until you give a verbal hire agreement. Then he comes over with a contract for you to review. At that point we discussed our project again. The day of the job came. Ed and his crew showed up on time as did all of the materials. Everything went well for several days. We noticed odd spotting on our deck before the project was finished. Ed came over to address some other issues (specifically how to make the stairs work with the slope of our yard) and we pointed out the spotting. He talked with the lumber company. Turns out that the outdoor screws were defective causing the stains on the deck. Ed replaced our deck top with 20 new boards in a timely fashion. We would have rated Ed with all As, but there were a few minor attention to detail things that when pointed out, Ed took care of. For example, there was a board with a significant crack placed on our stairs and there was an entire board that they forgot to screw down. The cracked board was replaced and the other board nailed down. Easy fixes that we pointed out. Overall, he was easy to work with and we would hire him again. Our deck looks beautiful and we are pleased with the job.

Ed was great to work with. I told him what I had envisioned and he provided an option I hadn't considered. I ended up going with his suggestion as it provided me with more usable space and was more cost effective. I was very surprised at how quickly he was able to start the job and that it only took 3 days. They were punctual and kept me appraised of their progress. When I expressed a concern about the deck being able to support a large fountain, they beefed up the framing even more in the area where the fountain will be displayed. I love my new deck and am happy that I went with Ed Gause Construction. Watch out for his jokes!!!
