+ -1 moreThere were some problems with scheduling including the boulders not being available for a few weeks. When we got the service scheduled, the truck arrived promptly. Our driver had a small bobcat to move the boulders. He asked where we wanted them, which sides showing, etc. He did a FANTASTIC job. When he finished with the bobcat, we were so impressed with his skills that we applauded. He got the gravel up our steep driveway saving us some backbreaking wheelbarrow trips. We are very impressed with the company and service.
Description of Work: We won a gift certificate at an auction. We decided to have gravel and boulders delivered. We got 5 very large boulders and a yard of gravel.

+ 2 moreI don't even know what to say - we hired this company b/c they were supposed to be qualified as a "landscape contractor," and it was the biggest mistake we've ever made. No one who was supposed to be there supervising was there 50% of the time, the workers did not have adequate equipment or training, the owner and other employees would avoid my calls, and then the owner, Manuel (as nice a guy as he is as a person) would complain that he was losing money on my job (as if that had anything to do with me, the customer, who had a signed contract). If his workers had not been so unbelievably inefficient, they would not have had to do things 2 and 3 times over. I've only included about 1/2 of the problems we had working with Pro Landscape - it was a big life-changing project for us that became a huge headache. After about a year, one of the managers (who would never return my calls) actually had the nerve to call me and find out if he could stop by with prospective clients. I told him I did not think it would be a good idea, because I was preparing to file against the company with the CCB at the time. Never heard from him again. (No current pending litigation.) The worst part was, when parts of our job were sitting 1/2-done, and plants were dying because we went into winter (instead of the job being finished in late summer/early fall as planned - was supposed to be a 3-4 month job), the owner and managers would tell me they had "other" jobs to finish (large, corporate jobs - I found them working on a huge job in downtown Portland for weeks, with equipment that was supposed to be used at my residence!). I think I'll stop here - I cannot recommend enough - STAY AWAY FROM PRO LANDSCAPE IN HILLSBORO!!!! You'll be sorry otherwise. Please read the other reviews here! I tried to be fair in my ratings (the only reason not all are "F's" is because we did have a few nice features work out - but totally unprofessional, and their mistakes have cost us $$$ over the past few years (work was done in 2003-2004, but is still failing as we speak). I felt it was important to all Angie's List folks to be honest and detailed here. Please forgive the lengthy review.
Description of Work: I'm so glad to see that others took the time to rate Pro Landscape (owned/operated by Manuel Castaneda). We worked with this company for over a year in total and are SO SORRY WE DID. Don't know where to begin. The nicest person was the estimator, who claimed he would oversee the design (complete front/backyard renovations to 1-yr-old home on Bull Mtn.). When it came to start date (after locking in contract with $), no one showed. After numerous calls, we were informed they were working on another, "important" job and would be starting "soon." After 2 weeks and threats to cancel, they dropped off some equipment one day, a couple of guys were there 2 hours, and no one showed for another week. Constant poor quality and workmanship - we should have thrown them out in the beginning! Instead of building 4-ft. basalt boulder walls as contracted, they had 2 guys dry stack smaller rocks we paid them to remove (!) - explanation was that the CAT wasn't available to move the bigger boulders (so they knowingly did it wrong anyway). 1 guy spent all day "driving" the CAT around a small street tree that was being removed, instead of removing it first, and the owner constantly complained that they were "losing $" on our job - can't imagine why, since they had to re-do about 60% of our entire contract for not meeting codes (failed to secure city permits to build stairs to 2nd story deck, built it out of code - had to be moved after finishing - now is leaning down hill (including expensive glass paneling in stairs). Came home one day to find multiple giant holes in our backyard (they "lost" a giant metal pole used to secure our pin-pine walls - never did find it). They put sprinklers in an area that had only rocks (which they put there, b/c we paid them to put a French drain underneath with pea gravel over it). They botched the construction of our ipe hardwood deck numerous times - had someone subbed to do the work who was NOT qualified (despite their swearing he was)...handlaid drift-stone in backyard had separated and settled unnaturally (probably due to the extra big holes they dug and never packed properly). Paid to have downstairs below deck waterproofed and sealed - still leaks now, despite their trying to fix it numerous times (each time we allowed them to try and fix something under warranty, it seemed to get worse). They used *metal* covering (can you say rust?) in our water feature and used pumps that we later discovered were not intended for continuous waterfall/pond use and both have gone out twice.

+ -1 moreGreat service. Since this was a small project and I could not give precise information as to the extent of repairs needed, they proposed hourly billing. Henry was very knowledgeable, and advised me on improvements to the irrigation system that we can make in the future as we continue to landscape our yard. He took the time to explain things to me, as I am not very familiar with irrigation systems, and also showed an interest in saving money and water for us. In fact, we had used Pro-Landscape about 5 years ago for a completely different problem (Lots of water flooding the crawlspace) and although they had done an outstanding job on that risky project which no one else wanted to take on, I had forgotten the company's name until I came across it in Angie's List (I just joined 1 month ago). I am happy to have found them again.
Description of Work: Henry came out to the house and fixed two broken valves and one broken pipe on our old irrigation system. He also made some adjustments to various sprinklers that were not aimed correctly, and set up the weekly sprinkler timer.

+ -1 moreRodrigo was very friendly and very efficient. He suggested that rather than waste time trying to figure out which valve was bad, just replace all three since they were old. I thought that was a good idea and concurred. Gave a B for price because I just don't know, but it seemed reasonable.

Installation at the time seemed ok - although our landscape designer had to come to the house to supervise plant placement as the workers were not following her plans. Over the years we found that the sprinkler system was placed incorrectly (sprinklers spraying toward the house vs. away from it). In addition, a retaining wall has begun to lean away from our house. Pro Landscape was contacted and a team of two people was sent out to correct the issue. It was obvious they were not pleased to be fixing the wall. The wall was over 20 feet long and 2 feet high. Only 3 feet of the wall was "un-done" and "corrected." The wall is now level in that three foot section, but is no longer flush with the pathway it was stabilizing. Pro Landscape was informed and said they would come out again to fix the issue. I was fed up and hired someone else to do the job right.
Description of Work: Our landscape designer recommended Pro Landscape three years ago to install our project for us. The installation included soil amendment, placing plants (planting them), adding on to an existing sprinkler system and creating two small retaining walls (Mutual Materials used for the walls).

+ 2 moreWe couldn't be happier. The 30 x 90 yard was nothing but a dirt slope when we started and now it is an OASIS. When our ''dream'' back yard turned out to be twice our budget, Manuel showed us where we could scale back, what we could do ourselves or do later. Crew was prompt, courteous, thoughtful, fun and hard working. The BobCat had to squeeze between a shed and the air conditioner and run over the edge of the driveway. The crew was very careful to protect these. The project was finished in one week with no delays, even though we added irrigation at the last minute. Because of budget, we had to do the actual choosing and planting of plants ourselves, but Rodrigo went with us to the wholesaler and was indispensable to the process. Henry was a hard working, creative supervisor who was kind and well regarded. One thing that SOLD us on ProLandscape is that the company provides free education for the staff, teaching useful skills such as welding, concrete work and English! BRAVO.
Description of Work: Excavation on a slope for, and placement of, boulders for water feature which included a short creek, waterfall, and pond. This included liner, heavy duty boulder padding, circulating pump and auto-filler. Construction of a low retaining wall made of mortarless boulders, 4 steps leading up slope; placement of additional large boulders. Rotilling in soil amendment, installation of a four zone sprinkler system, installation of electric wires for future lighting, laying two areas of flagstones on either side of patio and path to gate. Entire area was raked smooth and cleaned up of any debris.

+ -1 moreWe hired these guys because they were contracted with our builder to do the front yard, so we figured we'd just have them do the whole job. What a mistake. We should have known after having a terrible experience with them on our last house. But the foreman assured us that everything had changed and they'd do a great job. They did not rototill or give us good topsoil under the sod as promised, the yard was very uneven and bumpy, the plants were very poor quality and not what we had ordered (most of them have died since...because they installed the sprinklers poorly?), and we're still waiting for delivery on several plants that we paid for. We were promised a 1 year warranty on all plants, but they have refused to make good on it, and every time we call them to ask about the plants that we're still waiting for, they promise to be out first thing in the morning and they NEVER show. This has happened numerous times. VERY poor customer service, quality, etc. Do not hire this company!

Description of Work: Replaced a couple of defective sprinkler heads. Dug a trench and moved a sprinkler unit from underneath my new deck and positioned it to water much more efficiently.

They begrudgingly replaced the plants that died the first year, but their replacements subsequently died off. Literally all live plants remaining from their work are weak and sickly looking --all are native to this area and should do quite well -- all other trees and plants in the yard are thriving! I would hire them without hesitation for rock work, but they missed the boat on the trees and shrubs -- they chose inappropriate shade/slope locations for them and/or planted them improperly, leaving them to wither regardless of our attempts to care for the plants as Pro-Landscape had instructed us to do.
Description of Work: Create rock steps and rearrange portion of rock wall to accommodate steps. Plant trees and shrubs to strengthen slope.
