Aylwin Construction

I sent Aylwin an email request for estimate and Mike Brost promptly completed the estimate and answered my questions. After reviewing the estimate Mike quickly gave the list of references that I requested. I sent a down payment of 50%, not required, to begin the work. Aylwin's offices scheduled the job and began work as stated. The roofers called whenever they encountered an issue and handled all problems in a courteous and professional manner. All work was performed as stated and all debris removed from the property. Although Aylwin's wasn't the lowest estimate the price was very competitive, and a wonderful bargain for the quality of the work. I am completely satisfied with the work and the professionalism of the company. I would absolutely use them again and I highly recommend the company.

They screwed up their estimate and everything went sideways because they only were assuming three layers of tear off and they discovered a fourth layer of tear off. We had two layers of Cedars shingles, which are very difficult, and then two layers of asphalt on top of that. So, they had way more work than they bid. So, they were ticked off from the beginning. The guy that came out was okay. It was their B team. When I found that out, I had to stay with them more than I anticipated. It was not too cool of an experience. I had them back for some follow-up stuff. But, they just didn't do the job of clean up. There was a mess. They were really busy and put me off for a while and then they brought a crew that I knew was a sub, basically. The workers that came out were fine.

In general, my issues were not with the job itself, but rather communication and cleanliness issues. The roof has not leaked as far as I can tell this winter. 1. My first request for a quote was lost, but when I called again, appointment was quickly scheduled. Quote process went well, and contractor was very clear that it would be a while until they were able to get to the job. 2. The communication process leading up to the roofing was poor between when I was told I was next on the list and it would be a week and when the project actually started. I understand that there are rain delays and other issues, but it would have been nice if I was told what was happening, rather than having to call myself two weeks later wondering when the roof would be worked on. 3. I had a series of issues I sent in an e-mail to the address where the invoice came from, did not get any kind of mail stating this was an incorrect address for correspondence. Had to call the office to figure out why after a week I still had not received any response. 4. Roofing debris was left in the gutters, which washed down the downspouts as well. Alywin cleaned the gutters after multiple calls, but I didn't discover the roofing debris in the downspouts until this winter during the big rains, when they backed up. I had a different roofing company clean the downspouts, and they discovered the debris. 5. My back deck had several nails/staples left on it, took a couple of calls to get that cleaned up. They also left a dead bird on the porch that had been in one of my gutters, I ended up cleaning that myself. 6. The permanent anchor was removed and not replaced, I had to call to get that replaced. They did complete quickly. 7. The skylights were not cleaned, I had to call multiple times to get them cleaned. I have four, it appears they were only cleaning two. 8. One of my gutters on the front porch was slightly bent. Alywin did volunteer to repair/replace. 9. The new container for my hose in the backyard was missing a stake, lost when it was moved five feet away under my deck to protect it. I appreciated that the crew moved the hose to protect it and Alywin did volunteer to pay for replacement, but it was just another item in the list. 10. I found discarded trash in my recycle bin that I had to remove and put in the trash. 11. Crew started work on 8 am on Saturday, did not let me know or ask ahead of time about weekend work. 12. After the job completed Saturday, crew left truck in my driveway over the weekend until Monday. They had asked to leave it in the driveway, but I thought it was just until the next day, not all weekend. 13. It took a month to resolve all the outstanding issues, with repeated phone calls and e-mails. I have had many positive experiences with contractors rated highly on Angie's List. This is the first time I've regretted accepting a bid from a contractor. Since they resolved most of the issues, I was tempted not to write a review, the recent downspout issues were the final straw.

Well after my last review in which I gave them a "C" on Angie's List. Aylwin came out to our house immediately and inspected the roof. They gave full explanations to the questions we had and resolved all issues. Thank you Aylwin for your prompt service and attention! I would definitely recommend these roofers.

They accomplished they task in a timely fashion once they got here. They fixed issue. In fact they found cracked vent caps and repaired them within original price.

The roof looks wonderful and we have every confidence that it will serve us well for a great many years. In particular we would like to commend the people who represented Aylwin Roofing.. Christian was our main point of contact with Aylwin . Christian was always courteous, and he went to great pains to see that all of our questions were answered thoroughly and that all of our concerns were addressed quickly, and resolved completely. We would also like to commend Raoul and the work crew on our job. Their work ethic and concern for their work was truly remarkable. Under Raoul's direction, they worked together cheerfully and well . Their attention to detail was excellent. Everyone was courteous and dedicated to the job. They all seemed to care very much about their work. Cleanup every day and after the job was finished was outstanding. The roof was installed just as specified in the contract.

Overall I'm very pleased and quite reluctant to rate them a "B". It was a great crew. They worked really hard. They did a good job. The job was much bigger than any of us expected. They also got me into the schedule very quickly which was great. I had a hole in my roof and was worried about getting it fixed before it started raining in Sept or Oct. My few complaints about the job were I found cigarette butts in the yard and some plants and yard decorations were damaged. They compensated me for that. I also found communication to be difficult. There was a bulge in my roof and no one explained why or talked to me about it. It took a month or so for the crew leader to come by to explain it, but then I wanted to talk to someone higher up and it took another 3 weeks or so for that to happen. If I could I would actually rate them more of a B+ or A-. All in all they did a super great job.

Although someone does answer the phone and take down your call back number, there does not seem to be any interest by this company to call back to schedule service. I have called on three different occasions over the past three weeks, reached a person taking calls and left my information. To date, no one from this company has called back to schedule a time to come out and look at the service needed. Based on this lack of response alone, you would likely do well to be cautious in choosing this company to perform services. If the basics of customer service are not being met, how could you rely on their performance to complete the most important elements of the service being performed.

The crew arrived promptly as scheduled for the first job and finished the job earlier than expected but not a good thing, it was a rush job. During the job they ran into issues and were unable to complete the job as described. Instead of informing me, they tried to cover the moldy boards instead of replacing them. I came home just intime to notice. 1. They had to rip new boards off overhangs and spray the mold instead of being able to replace them all together as quoted. I was quoted 4k to remove and replace these boards. When they ripped off one of the boards it cracked 20 inches, instead of replacing the board they cracked, (foot prints all over the board) they caulked the crack and left it. I called to have them fix it, the guy came out and said it was a flaw in the board. So not only did he do a terrible job, he lied. Then came out to replace the board at 7am without notifying me. It was a loud, rude awakening. He just flipped the board over and now the crack is on the other side. Again he didn't think I would notice, poor quality service and workmanship. 2. The caulking could have been done better by a 5 year old, very sloppy and chunky. Not impressive work. 3. They never installed the ventilation as quoted. They did refund after I complained and followed up, however didn't convince me that they did a good job or fix their poor communication and job oversights. They were perfectly ok to lose my business and send me a refund check for $500 for work they didn't do. 4. The other two jobs were never scheduled even after asking to be put on the schedule multiple times (before my complaint) or completed as quoted. I worry I have covered mold and no ventilation to cause more mold. I don't trust this guy did what he said he was going to do. I called other roof companies and they can't come out until the spring. Very disappointed the job wasn't done correctly and the other jobs are now left to sit all winter. I wanted the roof to match and fade at the same rate. Not happy with the incomplete service.

They had done such a good job on our neighbor's roof that we decided to have them help us as well. They were done on time, the cleaned up well, and the roof held up great throughout all the weather we had. They stuck with the estimated price, and it only took 3 days. They spent a little extra time doing an inspection afterwards to make sure everything was good. They even covered our outside plants and doors to make sure they were safe during all the work, and it looks great too! I would recommend them to anyone.

Got a competitive bid from their estimator. The only weak point was in not keeping me notified of when the work would take place, they picked up a big apartment job and were delayed in getting to my project. Schedule was not an issue for me so I was okay with the delay, but they need to work on just keeping the client informed. Once on the project their field team was excellent and very professional. You could not ask for a harder working crew and they left everything quite clean every night. I would highly recommend them and already have to other friends. Great work at a good price. They did not try and sell me on a more expansive roofing system that I did not need. Quality team all the way around.

From the beginning to the end.... They were very professional! The roof turned out great and they left the place spotless! On their own they replaced a torn window screen. I just thought that was very kind and to top it off they worked on very hot days. They are very hard workers!

Once the work was begun, it was worth the wait. The 2 man crew worked quickly and clearly explained what extra work needed to be done. They cleaned up every day and didn't damage so much as one plant. The total cost was less than the next highest bid (that did not include the extra work needed.) It was, however, 3 months from when we contracted to when the work began, and this was after a very unhappy phone call on my part. (First it was going to be 6-8 weeks, then after 6 weeks it was going to be another 4 weeks, then after 4 weeks it was going to be a week and a half, then ....) The owner, Rufus, did contact me very quickly and had the men at our home 2 days later. I know that roofing is dependent on weather and other manpower being available, but had the office just kept us updated much frustration would have been avoided.

Aylwin Construction did a complete tear down and re-roofing job for us. They did a wonderful job. The crew was very professional and did a superb job. It only took them two days to complete the job. The supervisor was there for the start of the job to oversee the work being done and he also did a final inspection to make sure the work was to our satisfaction. We would highly recommend Aylwin Construction to anyone. They performed as promised and it was a joy to watch them work. Their price was very competitive.

Great. I felt the crew from Aylwin treated my house the way I would treat my house. They always left their work area clean and organized before they left for the day. It was very impressive. I would recommend their services! The roof looks great and they installed flashing in some areas that will prevent standing water on our roof. They also did a wonderful job on the wood that needed replacing. Everything looks grand!

Aylwin Roofing saved me a lot of money. I had several drips from above scattered around the garage. Two other roofers came before Aylwin and tried to sell me a new roof. The first one employed dishonest techniques to sell me something I didn't need. The second was better, but still placed undue emphasis on points meant to sell me a roof. Aylwin was straightforward and honestly told me my current roof was OK and would last another 5-10 years. The drips were condensation from plastic lining the insulation. It's so good to know someone who doesn't try to sell people work they don't need.

The scheduler was polite and the crew arrived on the date promised.. A tree limb had fallen onto the roof during a wind storm and poked a hole in the roof. Sean and one other worker arrived on time, were very professional and they performed the torch down procedure, which they are licensed to do. They patched the hole and while waiting for everything to cool down, volunteered to clean all of the debris from the roof. We were very pleased with these men, their workmanship and the company.

The person I spoke with when scheduling a roofing estimate asked the height of the house. I said two stories plus an attic. When the estimator arrived he said he did a lot of estimates in this area. Then he mentioned how "tall" the house was. I knew what was coming. He was very friendly and polite. But he said he was not going up on the roof. Nor was he even going to put a ladder against the roof to take a look at it. He had only a 19 ft ladder. He said that if we wanted someone to go up on a "high" roof I'd need to schedule a special appointment with the guys who go up on high roofs. He said that would be a few weeks out because they were busy. The phone scheduler had asked for a description of the height of the house. The estimator arrived and said he'd done many estimates in this area. If that's the case, then you should expect that you are not coming to inspect a ranch home. ALL of the houses in this and surrounding neighborhoods are "tall". There isn't a roof anywhere around that can be reached with a 19 foot ladder. These are big old Portland homes. Instead of having a real inspection, he relied on me entirely to describe our roof condition. That's ridiculous. The only reason I knew the details of our roof (where plywood was needed, that one side how more shingles than the other, number of vents, etc.) was that we'd already had bids and we'd learn about our roof from those bids. Aylwin, if your estimators are not going to inspect the roof in order to prepare a bid, let's just do it by phone next time.

They did a good job. They were good workers and they moved very quickly when they got started. As far as I can tell, they did a fine job with installing a new roof. I only checked with a couple of outfits and they were low priced. They were highly rated in Angie's List so I didn't do a lot of checking or getting bids on the roof. They made my standards. I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish and they agreed to dot hose things. It looks like a good job to me, its still there and its not leaking. They showed up on time and got the job done.

Got 3 bids for a new roof. Aylwin?s offered the best price. Went with them based on the better price and their good reviews on Angie?s list. They were able to schedule the job within two weeks. The crew was very professional and polite. They finished the job on time, with good quality (as far as I can see), and cleaned up very nicely. Both my wife and I are very happy with the new roof so far.

Despite Earnie being very pleasant on the phone these guys never bothered to call and set up a time to give me an estimate. I had to call and remind them 3 separate times (weekly), and was promised a prompt response each week...but nobody ever called, so I took my business elsewhere.

They were very thorough, professional and easy to talk to. It was all that I hoped and expected to receive from a contractor. They came in higher. It came down to the availability. I would have chosen them if they were able to fit me in. It didn't come down to price.

They were the lowest bid, out of the 3 I chose to obtain. But, I was leery of choosing them since the their bid was substantially lower than the 2 other bids. The Estimator was nice and professional. The quote arrived when promised. I ended up choosing a different Contractor, after obtaining a 4th bid because of the disparity of this bid to the other 2. I chose that 4 Contractor who was slightly higher than Aylwin, because I had 2 strong personal references..

They were on top of things. They showed up and got it done in one day. We never had any follow-up. We needed to clean-up the yard really nicely after the fact. All of the people that we dealt with directly were super. They were informative and helpful. They gave us the best estimate and time frame. We're pretty happy with the results. We recommended them a few times to other people.

Shaun's team at Aylwin was excellent, and we'd heartily recommend them. We had a construction defect in our ADU roof, and we were renting that ADU to a tenant. The roof was, for lack of a better word, squishy. We sought several bids. Aylwin's bid was the most reasonable, and Aylwin was the only company that offered to come cut a patch of the vinyl and take a look around under there to give us an accurate sense of the problem. Shaun in particular was marvelous. When he came out to give the estimate, he was prompt, respectful, and did not spare us the bad news. He later returned to cut a patch in the vinyl and take a look around, and he brought another person -- and they were both very knowledgeable and explained what they were doing and why they were doing it. Right there on the roof! They also laid out their plan for the repairs in quite a bit of detail. Shaun also brought a camera to document the damage in case we wanted to pursue a claim against the responsible party. It did take them a while to get us a bid, but when it came in, it was quite reasonable considering that we were looking at totally redoing the whole roof. We were very satisfied with both the quoted and actual price. The work they said needed to be done was consistent with other bids, and Shaun indicated where we could get more elaborate with the repairs. The team who came out to do the job was fantastic. They were respectful, accommodating, and pleasant to be around. They also knocked out the job in a weekend. (The ADU is small, just 450 sq ft, so they wedged us in between larger jobs.) The guys were so great. My partner spent most of that weekend up on the roof with them, and they explained everything thoroughly and let her help. I spent less time with the crew, but when I poked my head out, they were nothing but polite and professional. They cleaned up the site quickly and thoroughly. I was so happy with Aylwin's help! We'd definitely hire them again.
