About us

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. I'm Dan Muir, born and raised in Portland Oregon. I went to Centennial High School and have a five year degree from Multnomah University. I began painting in 1973 to work my way through college and continued after graduation. I began on old Portland homes and soon perfected the preperation necessary to produce long lasting, quality paint jobs. I make an effort to be prompt and timely, to insist on quality, and employ people who are well versed in comunicating with customers who may have questions or concerns. I have been quite successful in painting largely due to my overall dedication to good preparation, the use of quality materials and the knowledge of the many dynamics in this particular industry. Good paint jobs do not happen by accident. It takes an organized effort with people that know the business. I hope you will trust me with your home or your commercial property and I promise I will do all I can to make the painting experience a pleasant one. Our license number is 47305 and everyone that works for me is on payroll and fully insured. You can contact me directly at 503 810 6105. You can also look us up at www.muirpainting.com. Award winning. Additional phone - (503) 291-7011.

Dan came out and gave us a no nonsense bid on painting our house after doing a walk around with us to determine what we wanted done. I called two other contractors; one never got back to me, the other quoted me almost twice Dan's price. We had to wait for the rains to stop, but when Dan's crew came out (his son was the super on the job) they went right to work and got the house prepped and painted. They scraped and sanded the worst areas prior to painting. Some areas/holes were caulked. When we returned from our w/e away, the house was done and looked great. They had painted everything that should have been painted, and got the trim on all the right pieces. We noticed a couple of things we wanted taken care of and Dan had his son come out that day and take care of it. Very professional, and a great job. Would recommend to family.

This was a house painting job. Which included painting aluminum siding that had been previously painted, ornate metal patio supports, metal security door and a metal front door. The house was a single level in good condition and the wood areas needing scraping and caulking were minimal. The preparation included pressure washing the house and this was our only concern because it was done in such a short time we were not sure it was completed properly. We discussed this with Dan Muir and he assured us that it was done properly and that any areas that needed additional cleaning would be done on the day the house was painted. The detail preparation work (scraping, sanding, caulking etc.) was done on painting day. The painting of the house was done by a crew of painters and workers. It was completed in one day and they did an EXCELLENT job. The crew worked well together and everyone appeared on task and enjoyed working together. My wife is an avid gardener and was very concerned about damage to existing and emerging plants around the house. Much to her delight the crew avoided any damage to the garden. Not even paint. The cleanup was excellent !! There were a couple of unexpected preparation tasks that the painters felt they need to do in order for the painting to come out properly. They just dug in and did them. The business process: We had received several bids the previous year thinking we were going to have the house painted in 2013. All of the contractors came out and inspected the job prior to bidding. We ended up delaying the job to 2014. We contacted Dan Muir and he said he would do the job for the original bid (2013) and he sent us a new contract. We contacted him by phone and asked him to proceed. They picked up the paint color samples we had selected and then it was just a matter of waiting for the weather. Based on our experience I would definitely recommend Dan Muir painting. I consider them ?old school? in the sense that they do what they say they will do. We verbally added a couple of things to the job that we wanted. Dan told us what would cost and what would be included at no additional charge. All of that was honored.

Matt and Tom helped us out a lot with doors and miscellaneous painting that we have had to do for years but never got to. We remodeled several years ago, changing from stained moldings and doors to white. We had painted some of the doors but there were several we never did. They helped us with finishing the painting of the many doors including closet doors in two bedrooms. We also had never textured our walls. And they finished the last room with texture. They painted two of the bedrooms and the two level entry way walls. It was such a relief to have so much done as we are getting ready to put our house on the market. We are so appreciative of what they did. There were a few unfinished sides of doors and places on the wall, we had to go back and finish. I would like to have given they a B+ or A- for the work they did. But that wasn't and option. I would and have recommended them to others.

Fabulous! The crew arrived promptly, dove right in and worked hard! What impressed me the most was how meticulous they were, how much pride they take in the quality of their work and how much they clearly enjoy working together. They were polite, professional and friendly, not only with us as homeowners, but also to each other. They came back as promised the next day to finish up and do a walk-through even though we had already paid. It was a thoroughly painless and enjoyable experience with no frustrations whatsoever from start to finish. No plants were harmed, nothing was broken, and everything was cleaned up. The only way we can tell they were here is how beautiful our house looks now. If you need something painted, this is DEFINITELY the company to hire!

The reason I chose Muir Painting is because they were the only painting company I got a bid from that wasn't going to price gouge me on every little thing. There were a few hiccups in communication regarding the day they were coming out to pressure wash. The guy they sent out climbed over the fence bending the metal. They never did fix it. The painting crew missed some areas on our house and got paint on other areas that shouldn't have paint. I spoke to Dan Muir regarding these issues and he sent his painting crew back out to address them. Unfortunately they did not address all our issues so I called Dan back and he came out himself to fix them. All and all the house looks great! Dan Muir was very easy to deal with and fixed all our issues.

Let's get right to the point, I had the best experience I've ever had in Portland with a residential contractor. The exterior painting job took two days, one to power wash the house, and all of the painting was completed in one other day. Other contractors were estimating a six-day job. The quality of the painting was excellent, and I'm very discerning, and the crew was very professional. None of our landscaping was damaged either. Dan used the paint I specified and applied it properly - it looks great. As a bonus, Dan's bid was the lowest of five I received, on the average 40% lower. I was actually reluctant to award him the contract because I thought his bid was too low to get the results I would expect. I generally have found that after investigation most low bids have compromises hidden in them that made them unacceptable. But Dan followed up his bid with a phone call explaining his work plan, and convinced me that he was simply a more efficient operation than his competitors. I'm glad I took the chance, because I got a great paint job in record time, and saved thousands of dollars too. I wish every contracting experience was like this one. Thanks, Dan.

We hired them after finding them on Angie's List. First, they power washed the exterior of the home and they came back a couple of days later to complete the painting. Three crew members completed the work. They cleaned up well and left not even a drop of paint behind. They completed the work in a couple of days. They were pretty flexible. They even painted the exterior of a shed without adding any additional costs on. The work turned out excellent!

Dan Muir gave us what I thought was a very fair bid to paint our 100 + year old house in Laurelhurst. The work was done fast, and done well, with just a few minor touch ups needed after completion. Our house looks 100% better than it did before. Thanks, Dan.

I am happy to see we got an A review, I am confused as to the huge length of time from the painting to the review? As to landscaping we try to be careful, but as I often explain depending on the amount of work and types of difficult ladder moves there are to make which require many passes through the same areas, and also the concentration of plants it can be almost impossible not to create some damage.

I received four other bids and his cost was very reasonable. Some others wanted to charge twice the cost he did. Dan himself didn’t do the painting, but his son and another crew member did. They were very careful and covered up all of the bushes and plants. They did a good job and completed the work in one day even before I got home from work. They didn’t over-spray anywhere or get paint where it didn’t belong. It was very neat painting and there was no mess left behind. The colors were exactly what I had asked them to be. They did a very nice job and the cost was reasonable. They did an excellent job.

We had 2 sides of new cedar siding that needed painting, along with trim work, a relatively small job. You would never know it, we received top notch service. Landon was exceptional to work with. He arrived on time, worked diligently and quickly. He stopped by Friday afternoon to prep then returned on Saturday completing the work by early afternoon. The paint job looked TERRIFIC and his clean-up was exceptional. Don't hesitate to use Muir painting, they are fairly priced, highly professional with excellent workmanship. Thank you Landon, I'm one picky lady and you managed to exceed my expectations!

I found Dan on Angies List and he came highly recommended. However I didnt see on his profile that he came out as far as Newberg. I emailed Dan and he got back to me in a timely manner. He offered to come out here and also met a bid I had received from a less known competitor. Of course rain decided to show itself when we initially wanted to start. The contract was easy and straight forward. The following week Dan called and he sent out the crew. Due to another job being rescheduled, about 10 crew members showed up. They knocked out this two story job in only 1 day (3 colors). I am very picky and looked the job over with a fine tooth comb. These guys really know their trade. I only found a few MINOR holidays in the work preformed. Dan's son ran the crew and did a great job keeping them all on task. I would happily refer Dan Muir to anyone I know. And I will!!!! The only thing I would recommend to make the process more convenient for a customer would be allow the use of a bank card or credit card. Otherwise, WOW! Great job!

big communication issues early on. Used his website and answering service (the main number on his profile is only for an answering service) but didn't hear back. Found his cell number, got in touch with him on a Thursday and he indicated he'd stop by and give a bid that day. Came home from work to no bid. No bid on Friday after I got home. So I wrote to him on his email address Friday night. Heard back that night saying he had worked 70 hours that week and painted two big warehouses, but that he'd come by Monday, Labor day to give a bid. He did. However, after seeing we had raked cedar shake siding, he said he it was end of season and everyday counts so he couldn't have his workers scraping.... only painting. He estimated the house would cost between 2500 and 3000. So he bid 2995, but in spring. I appreciated his honesty about the end of season but it was kind of cavalier, especially considering he bid at the top of the estimate to paint the house, and it had to wait until Spring. it was like he didn't want the job.

Response from Muir Painting
Yes it is true it gets very busy at the end of the exterior paint season and I can put in a 70 hour week both painting and I make all my own estimates for now. This lady had lead paint on her house and I was clear to explain that when we get to a certain point in the season we can no longer do houses that have a lot of peeling lead paint, we usually do them earlier in the year or in some extreme cases not at all. Unfortunatly with the new EPA rules these houses take a lot more time and are especially hard on my employ's who already work very hard. As this review in not great, keep in mind we never actually painted her house, thank you for taking the time to read this.

We called and made an appointment with Dan Muir. He came to our house to find out what needed to be painted. We wanted him to paint our deck and fence and he told us we needed to have our whole house painted, including the interior walls. He was very rude and seemed annoyed that we did not want him to paint the house. We did not have a good feeling about having him do the work. However, we thought we should see the bid and then decide. He said he would get back to us on Tuesday with a bid. That was over two weeks ago and we have not heard from him. I called his office 2 days ago asking that he give us a call. We have not heard from him. I

It is always hard to hit 100% but if you read reviews of jobs that I actually paint they are pretty good. In this case again as the season progresses we need to do more than partial houses. In most paint seasons by July our minimum paint bid would be 1500$. I am sorry [member name removed] thought she was not treated right, however it is not the norm. I just find it interesting that every not so good review I have had has been a house I have not painted. To judge the quality of my work one would have to look at the jobs I have done. I think those are the reviews that should count to someone that would hire me. thankyou

They were prompt and responsive but I was not happy with the quality of the painting job. There were a lot of places that had to be touched up. They charged an extra $800.00 to do the trim which I think was excessive. They also did not paint what I considered trim around a balcony - but they said it did not technically count as trim. It sure looked like trim to me. Perhaps we jut have different definitions of "trim".

Muir painting really impressed me. After a quick estimate, Dan Muir followed up with me to confirm general dates of availability and our paint colors, and he was so responsive that I had painters at my house just 2 days after I gave him the paint colors! On the day of the work, the crew arrived just after 7am, and then 6-8 workers went straight to transforming my house from a worn looking eyesore to what now looks like a new home. In just one work day the entire project was completed, and at the end of the project the foreman was glad to personally conduct the walk-around and do any additional touch-ups I requested. This was great work and a service-driven experience. I would gladly recommend them to others.

I got 8 bids from top-rated Angie's list painters starting in Feb of 2013. The bids ranged from $3,000 - $10,000. Muir was quickly the front runner for several reasons. Dan (the owner) was prompt, always returned my calls and was excellent at explaining the process. It was important to me that my house get painted when the weather conditions were ideal, which is why I wanted to start the process early. The original bid was for about $5,600, but between the siding replacement, removal of the aluminum windows, extra storm windows painted and the caulking the price ended up being $6,500. But, Dan talked me through all of it and it was my decision to do the extra work, and I am very happy that I did. He has a carpenter on his crew, which really helped a lot. How it works with Muir is that you pay the carpenter's work at $30 per hour, plus materials. This seemed reasonable to me and I was happy with the work. He matched the siding on my garage perfectly and also replaced window trim. After everything was done, Dan encouraged me to walk around and point out anything that was missed, or not to my satisfaction. His crew came back the next day, I gave them a list and it was all done. I haven't mentioned the most important part - the house looks great! I have already referred two friends to Muir.
Description of Work: Muir painted my 1,600 sq ft Victorian house (3 colors) and also my garage (300 sq ft). They also replaced some rotting siding on the garage, caulked the siding and removed aluminum storm windows that were installed under the trim (requiring new trim, as the storms were practically cemented on).

Excellent work. The team was courteous, friendly and efficient, even when discovering a rotted board which had not been anticipated. They assisted with its replacement without any extra charge. A large team (about 7 workers) painted the entire exterior siding and trim of our house in only one day with good precision. Dan, himself, responded to all our inquiries and assessed the work required. He followed up to make sure we were totally satisfied. We requested that the paint match a trial area we had done, and it is a perfect match even lthough a different brand. The only, minor, comment is that there was little warning about which day the work would happen.

Dan and his team did a fantastic job. He came out and wrote the bid the same day that we called. Of the three bids that we got, Muir's was in the middle, but his professionalism and promise of staring the job quickly made us pick him over the cheaper option. His team came out and power-washed everything, then painted our big house in four days (three days of painting, one gap day in the middle.) It looks beautiful. Lots of attention to detail, listened to our concerns and special requests, just did the job right, and quickly. Here's what you don't get: color consulting. They asked us to inform them what colors we wanted the day before the job began so they could get the paint. They didn't have the knowledge or desire to help us pick colors. Which is fine -- the people at Sherman Williams were helpful in that regard. TL;DR: We couldn't be happier with Muir Painting.

This is so true when it comes to colors, I am not so good at it. I think the paint stores I do business with have people there that do nothing but work with colors all day long and are much more qualified to assist in this area. And not to escape responsibility, however if I suggest a color and then someone does not like it they could hold me responsible. Thankyou

In early May, I called several contractors for estimates. Dan was the first contractor to respond and came the following day for a bid. Dan was very friendly and the pricing was competitive with the other estimates we received. We selected Muir Painting for several reasons: positive Angie's List reviews, competitive price and responsiveness. The first day there were eight men on the crew and the house was substantially completed before they left. The next weather permitting day, two men came out and finished the trim where needed. The house looks great and we would use Muir Painting again.
