We set a date in July which was convenient for me, for the painting. This unfortunately coincided with the major heat wave, and the workers had to spend the time in temperatures over 100 degrees for two days. They helped me move air conditioners in and out of windows so that the house would remain cool while they painted! After the job was completed, Mr. Eang made several trips to the house to help with doors that stuck shut. His workers were polite and cooperative. The office was responsive to questions and the house and garage looked great.
Description of Work: Exterior of house and garage were spray-painted, and some hand painting was done on the patio overhead.

Paul responded promptly to my initial call and provided a very thourough quote the next day. I was very impressed with his demeanor and professional presentation. He had a binder with documentation of his lisence, etc and also some photos of his past work. His bid was relatively low and he gave me choices as to type of paint (15 vs. 25 year vs. "lifetime" paint) and what part of my home I wanted to be the trim, base and accent colors. I am the first to admit I am not an easy person to please and also am a bit of a nit-picker when it comes to my house. He was very patient and explained things clearly. I decided to hire him for the job and he started it when he said he would. A guy came a few days in advance and pressure washed the house. They returned the next week and, to my surprise, started painting right away. Now, this is my first home and I have never had it painted before, but I was under the impression that the first day is generally used to scrape, sand, prep etc. The old paint was not in great shape and was bubbling/peeling in several areas. They did very little prep work. I was surprised to return from work that first day and the entire house was already the new base color. I began to worry at this point, because the Sherwin Williams people stressed how important it is to have proper prep work completed in order to really use the 25 year warranty on the paint (which we did upgrade to from a 15 year warranty paint). I walked around the house that evening and found several areas that looked really bad. I met with Paul's assistant the next morning before I left for work (Paul had not arrived yet) and pointed out the areas I was concerned about (specifically chips of old paint that were sticking out and semi-peeling off that had been painted over). He reassured me that there had only been one coat put on so far and that it would all be taken care of. When I returned from work I inspected the house again to find that it did apprear they had gone through and rescraped the problem areas. The second coat had gone up that day and most of the trim/accent color and it looked all-right. I did note that the trim color had been mixed up with the accent color in a couple places and pointed this out (again to the assistant) who stated he would fix it the next day. The assistant did return the next day and put a second coat over the trims and did change the color of the garage door frame and shed trim to the requested colors. I noted after work that the shed trims were only changed to the requested color on the 2 sides facing our house, which I felt like was pretty poor workmanship - basically he left the correction incomplete. I have a 2 year warranty on the paint job which I know will come in handy as there is already paint bubbling on some of the eaves, which is covered by the warranty. I intend to contact them again in the spring or summer after the winter has taken it's toll on the paint and get it fixed. Overall, they were pleasant to work with and very polite. I was underwhelmed with the quality of the work and lack of prepping. I do not like feeling like I need to watch people so closely, I expect/hope when I hire a professional to do a job for me, that I can just kick back and let them do it well. I will have them return to fix the areas that need it, but probably would not hire them for another job in the future.

Response from Sunshine Painting PDX Inc
The home owners should not inspect the project that IS HALF WAY DONE and got panic and think the pro that they hire do not know how to do their job. Example, when the member hires a home builder to build their home and HALF WAY DONE the member starts screaming " THE HOUSE LOOK VERY BAD, THIS BUILDER DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING", That is not really fair to the builder or anybody in any profession. The same with painting, If you inspect the project HALF WAY DONE, it would look a lot worst than before we start. It is ok to communicate and express your concerns to the contractor, but do not confuse between HALFWAY DONE and FINAL PRODUCT. This was exactly what happened to us. We have a process in what we do our job. and just because the member does not understand it, does not mean we do not know what we were doing. This member and family were happy with FINAL PRODUCT, and We also put in writing to warn this member that the bubbles may come back because the house has been bubbled before we start the project, and this is fairly common issue no matter who did the job. That what the warranty is for. Thank You.

It worked out great! I found them on Angie's List. They offered a discount, but their price was high. There work was exquisite. The one on one talking with them was much more personable than another company I have used in the past. That is what impressed me the most about them.

They were very detailed oriented. They were also very prompt; they painted our house in three days. They did the power wash a week before the actual painting was done. They were very consultative. They asked us a lot of questions about what we wanted for the trim. They were very easy to work with. They also gave us discounts. We found their pricing to be very reasonable.

The painters arrived sooner than expected, luckily I was home and ready for them. They cleaned and prepped the house in one day, and painted it the next. I appreciated them doing good prep work, especially caulking. They used two coats of paint. I feel the house is really sealed and it looks beautiful. There were additional places we wanted caulked after they painted; we negotiated a fair price for that additional caulking and repainting. They cheerfully, promptly and quickly touched up where ever I asked. They were h****** the plants around the house. Many were trampled and broken. Even using tarps to catch paint chips, there were many left on the ground. We've had many compliments on the paint job, it truly makes the house look "brand new". We thought the price was more than fair for such a good job, including two sheds.

The contract stated that Sherwin William A-100 15 year warranty paint was to be used. Monday morning a Hispanic man came all by himselft, to start job, I had trouble understanding the workman. He did scraping. Came back on Wednesday, and because a very hot day, worked until abt 11:30 am. doing sanding and power washing. Paul did come by once and I talked to him about some prep being missed and not treating the rust on garage door. He did go get a can of Rustoleum paint. Thursday, man showed up about 9:15 a.m.. masked and painted. When he was almost done, I went out to see how things were going and noticed he was using Metro Recycled paint (5 gallons cost 39-44 dollars, I checked). When I asked about it he said that was what Paul told him to use. He finished up, I told him to have Paul call me that I wasn't happy about the paint used. Paul called me later that evening and apologized, said he should have OK'd it with me. It would not have been OK, I expected the quality paint that was bid. He said he would take $100 off the price, for the paint. And because they had used same paint on my aluminum awning, a flat white latex,(it should have been a gloss),I asked that they put a coat of gloss paint on it. The man came back on Saturday and painted awning with Sherwin Williams A-100 Satin, but at that point I just wanted it done. This was not a good experience, I am stuck with bad paint, If I hadn't happen to see the paint being used, I would never have known what had been done until later when paint started coming off. I should have taken the higher bid.
Description of Work: Home and Garage have permanent steel siding. Trim around12 windows scraped, sanded and painted on house, Aluminum awning over back patio prepped and painted, paint electric incoming pipe and head, caulk where needed. Garage, all wood trim, gutters, front garage door and side garage door prepped, caulked and painted, treat rust on side door before painting. Power wash where needed. The shed to be power washed and painted, (after I had dry rot repaired, which was done).

Hello, this is Paul Eang, owner of Sunshinepainting Inc. The member comment about the paint was right. White metro paint left over from the last project, and I told my guy to use it without getting ok from the member first. I apologize for this mistake. I did not mean to try to save money cutting corner, I was trying to save the environment, the actual saving from this project was $15.00 , three gallons of paint used. But this member did not get what she paid for and it was my mistake. However I did not feel metro paint is bad paint. Beside giving her $100.00 off , I will offer her 5 years warranty instead of 2. I felt so shame about this even it was an honest mistake.

Overall, Sunshine Painting was a great company to work with. Communication from the owner and his wife was great and they were responsive to my questions and concerns. I did think some additional steps could have been taken during the lead removal process, especially since I have children, and brought that to Paul's attention (i.e. better masks/clothing/shoe protection for crew for their health and so they don't track the lead dust around the yard or in the house if they need to use the bathroom, making sure paint doesn't fall out of tarps onto ground when they pick them up at the end of the day etc.) I have found in all of the construction work we've had done on our house that truly treating lead as a toxin is more the exception than the rule. People have good intentions, but I think they get too relaxed about it and forget to pay attention to the little details--or the owner and the crew have different understandings of how dangerous it can be. Paul was very open to my feedback about this, which was good. The crew was very patient with my daily questions and comments. Our house needed a lot of prep work and I tend to be detail oriented--I think that makes the difference between the finished product being "good enough" and "excellent." Overall, the prep work is good--some of the caulking on the porch soffit isn't smooth and the pressure washing spread some of the loose lead paint onto the ground and I had to clean that up. It was pretty hot while they were working and we kept them supplied with iced tea and lemonade; they were hard workers. The front door stain has some pooling of the stain on it and we have just been waiting for the heat wave to pass to get this fixed; the porch steps were painted in the heat and need a few touch ups as well, and I am confident these will be addressed quickly and well. They came out within a few days of finishing the project to do a couple of touch ups. A couple of days before they finished I wasn't sure about the trim color and they were patient with me trying a couple other options--in the end we stayed with the plum color but just used a little less of it in some spots. While I figured that out they got busy finishing other things until I made up my mind. I really appreciated this. It's a lot of money to spend and we wanted to love it when it was done, and they wanted us to feel that way too. We do love our house and appreciate Sunshine Painting's professionalism, pricing and responsiveness. The house looks beautiful. I'm attaching pictures, but they don't do it justice. We would definitely recommend Sunshine Painting.
Description of Work: We had the exterior of our 1920's bungalow painted in 4 colors (body, trim, accent and porch steps/floor). We've lived here 2 years and had an addition built on to the back of the house with primed cedar siding. The original house had some peeling lead paint, especially on the porch soffit. Paul's crew used a heat gun (not sure of the technical term) to remove it and peel it off. They did lots of caulking prep work, pressure washing, and then painted the house using a sprayer and hand painted some of the trim and window details. The bid was very reasonable compared to others we received (we had the range of $5500 to $20,000 for hand painting the whole house).

They gave me a price, and a date. I said that date is not going to work and they changed the date. They came out and did it promptly, and the supervisor came out and took care of everything. They were very through, they did a great job at a reasonable cost, and everything still looks great. The thing that is great about them is they have somebody when you call. Who relays the messages, and gets back, and follow ups with you. A lot of communication, but where a lot of other people you leave a message for them, they don t respond back. They don t really care if they get the work or not, but these people were very professional.

I had a very positive experience with them. There was some problem with the paint peeling off the porch, but that was because of the weather, and I had to call them a couple of times, and every time I called, they were right here and repainted it. There was no problem at all. Everything is just great now. When I decided to paint the house, I got four or five estimates, and theirs was the most reasonable. They were always here when they said they were going to be here. They did very good work too, and I have gotten a lot of compliments on how the house looked.

I had pretty much fired the previous house painter because he was unprofessional. I really wanted to work with this company because they were so incredibly professional and had a great reputation on Angie's List. They bid $2400 to paint 23 window sashes, trim board, some detail work and some interior painting. I ended up not using them because I found another highly rated company on Angie's List who bid $1400. I didn't feel that I could justify spending an additional $1000 to work with Sunshine Painting. I want to stress that I thought very highly of them and would consider working with them in the future.

Less than 24 hour notice when paint removal project was to begin. Crew "finished" paint removal & house was scheduled for painting. Actually only the front of the house was completed. It went well. Paul was responsive and professional. The only thing I didn't love was that he also quoted the price to paint my entire house; I did agree to receive this quote but since I was really only interested in the addition, parsing it out was a bit confusing.
Description of Work: Paul came out to estimate work to stain the exterior and interior of a special addition on our house. He carefully examined the work and spoke knowledgeably. The result of Sunshine Painting's work exceeded my expectations! This is a professional crew. They were happy, pleasant and fast. Paul Eang provided an estimate soon after my call, and Samantha planned the scheduling. The men that came to do the painting explained what they were doing through the process. Paul Eang checked on things periodically. When a concern came up about the trim (which didn't look good because of aging wood, not the crews fault) the crew re-sanded to make it look better. I couldn't be more pleased.
