Called the owner twice in an attempt to get a bid. He was pleasant and said he would call to schedule a time to come by (for a large job) but never got back to me. I spoke w/him twice in an attempt to schedule for a bid with no response.

For my first use of Fred Hoover Drywall, I was behind schedule on my DIY remodel, so I contacted 4 drywall contractors for estimates. Fred had a good professional balance of talking about what I wanted and what he could do, without criticizing any of the unavoidable odd angles or prior work. He called back the next day with a verbal estimate and named a time he could start. Later, I had to reschedule the start date, and Fred was amenable. On the new start date he arrived and walked through the entire project (1200 sq. feet) with me and the head of a crew of subs who would install the remaining 40 percent of the wall and ceiling drywall. The subs were quick and completed the install in two days and the one problem was my fault (a piece of sub floor not installed, so they rocked down to the joists). His son showed up the next day, introduced himself and began taping. Father and son worked as quickly as possible within the limits of how fast the mud would dry. The surface was finished as a smooth finish, harder to do than a textured surface, with a light brocade on all ceiling surfaces except the bath. I chose to do the prime and paint myself, but Fred insisted that I use a quality primer especially made for sheetrock, which he supplied at my request, rather than use a paint store primer. As it happens, the paint sprayer I rented for applying the primer was dirty and gave poor results for the first 15 minutes, but after cleaning the priming went OK. I've finished small drywall jobs, up to room size, with good results, and hired subcontractors to finish other remodels in a prior life as a contractor, but Fred's quality exceeded all of them. I was impressed. I called him a few weeks later to finish my first floor bath, he was buried in work, but he came as quickly as possible (one week later) and worked faster than I expected. I forgot to mention a patch in another place that needed taped, he did a preliminary job on his last day, and left the finish to me, as I agreed, since it was a long drive for him and no additional charge.
Description of Work: I used Fred's services twice, once to complete the installation and taping, sanding and texturing of sheetrock on the second floor and again to tape, sand and finish a first floor room remodel. Fred bid the job with help from his grandson, and was direct and personable without criticizing or elaborating about any of the odd angles of the ceiling or unusual wall sizes. Fred's bid was slightly above the median bid, about a hundred dollars above the low bid and $80 below the high bid. I chose him because he asked how I wanted the work done, rather than telling me how he would do it. He really seemed to be more flexible about solving odd problems than the other bidders. Other bidders (3) had made the corners of the 3 surfaces of the cathedral ceiling sound like a real problem, Fred shrugged it off and said "..that's no problem, we do that on a lot of second floor remodels". Fred specializes in remodel work. I suspect that some of the companies are "new work" people that are short on new work, and have moved to remodel work and sometimes low-bid jobs to keep their crews busy. I suspect that that was why at least one of the bidders was so critical of all the odd angles and walls that weren't optimal for drywall installation, but were "just right" for what I wanted.
