Upon meeting Mr. Johnson, he stated that he should have the new bedroom completed within two weeks. He provided us with an estimate and stated that the new bedroom would contain all of the same amenities as other rooms in the house. We paid a 50% deposit up front. After two weeks, he and his crew were not even close to being done with the job. Mr. Johnson informed us that there was a hold up with the permit. That was understandable, but the permit was requested after two weeks, rather than at the beginning of construction. However, he stated the job should be finished within the next week. After multiple hold ups, excuses and at times a complete lack of communication, the job was finished after two months. We understand that these things happen, but instead of being up front about it, Mr. Johnson continued to make promises about the timeline that he could not keep. He continued to order items late and not deliver them in a timely manner. When we got to the end of the process and we were desperate to have a finished room for our son, we asked Mr. Johnson to please be realistic about what kind of timeline that we could expect. Instead of providing us with this timeline, he demanded that we pay him the remaining 50% of the payment. Our contract clearly stated that the remaining 50% was to be paid with the completion of services. When we informed him of this, Mr. Johnson threatened to charge us for insulation; insulation that he had forgotten to put on the bid and said he would install for free, since the new room was to match the other rooms in the house, including the walls and their interior components. Mr. Johnson also demanded that we only contact him during specific hours, after I sent a text to him at 5:49pm, despite previously telling us that we could call or text him "any time" and he had also contacted us before and after these hours. Mr. Johnson's crew was professional and the room itself was well done. The only exception was the bedroom door, which was not painted to match the other rooms in the house. This was likely done, (or rather, not done) in an effort to finish the room as quickly as possible after delaying it for many weeks. We understand that bedroom additions can certainly take much longer than two weeks to build. We had realistic expectations but were promised time and time again that Mr. Johnson and his crew could finish the job on a much quicker timeline. Had we known it would take as long as it did, we likely would have gone with a different contractor. We are disappointed with Mr. Johnson's lack of realistic timelines, lack of follow through, extreme lack of preparedness for the details of this job, (permits, ordering parts, etc.) and unprofessional behavior toward us when he became angry at our request to give our ten year old son a realistic timeline of the room's completion. While I commend his crew for their hard work and expertise, I would not recommend Nick Johnson Construction to anyone.
