It went fairly smoothly. Only had a few hiccups. Project was done on time and all that actually did the work, did a great job. David Moir came in under the estimate, so that was good. The finished bathroom exceeded my expectations. I am as happy as a clam.

The kitchen remodel went exceptionally well. David Moir was very easy to work with-- he was easy to get a hold of and returned calls promptly. He helped us with our decisions throughout the process and was very patient with our lack of experience. He kept in touch regularly and let us know how things were progressing and what to expect throughout. The work crew was courteous and respectful, they showed up on time and everyday and did excellent work. They kept the dust and debris contained, and cleaned up at the end of every day. The pricing was fair and transparent. They transformed our cramped, 35 year old kitchen into a roomy, efficient, beautiful space. We are extremely happy with the results and plan to use Moir Construction for any future remodels we may do. Several suppliers we talked to also had good comments when they heard that Moir was doing our project--apparently they have a good reputation in town. I would certainly recommend them to my family or friends.
Description of Work: Moir Construction did a complete kitchen remodel. New cabinets, hardwood floor, granite countertops, new appliances, new lighting and wiring, relocated plumbing, opened up some walls, added a window, painted, etc.

We became friends with them and they are so personable. They did the work as if it was in their own home. They really went out of their way to make everything perfect. Even the bath which was not part of their responsibility but around the shower they scrapped some ugly stuff off and made it look better.
Description of Work: They redid our kitchen and some work in my bathroom. We have a downstairs bathroom that needed quite a bit of work. They did drywall, cabinet and new flooring.

Very friendly and extremely responsive. I left a message Sunday night (non-emergency) and received a call back by 9 am Monday. We needed repairs completed to meet a sales contract deadline and the team made it happen - and the repaired construction looks better than the original construction. A great team! And final cost was less than original estimate which was already reasonable.

Steve was great to work with. Very down to earth. All work was completed in a timely manner and the craftsmanship was top notch. I had him get rid of some ugly old counters from the 80's and replace with newer linoleum. He prefabbed the work in his shop and installed on site. His two employees Todd and Gare were both also very professional and did great work. During the installation, a part of the counter being installed marred the cabinet trim next to the new counters. Todd fixed the damage without me even having to say anything about it.

Moir Construction lived up to its A rating and more. Remodel was major, but was completed in 4 weeks as estimated. Jim and Gere, the two Moir employees, and the plumbing and electrical contractors were all punctual, professional, and highly skilled. All the professionals treated their work as if it was their own home project. Other than plumbing and electrical, Jim and Gere had all the skill sets needed to do the rest of the remodel. David Moir, Jim, and Gere gave us good suggestions along the way saving us from making errors that would have made the outcome less than the perfect outcome achieved.

I called last fall to get an estimate. The person who answered the phone said someone would call back. Nobody ever called back. I called again in March of this year, 2014, to get an estimate. The person who answered said the same thing - someone would call me to set up an estimate. Nobody ever called. Two times with no call backs is enough for me. I won't be calling these guys any more.

Sticker shock was just too much for us. Decided to re-wallpaper, paint, and just dream. I have ever had a kitchen without drawers that didn't have sawdust coming down into the dishes below. Would have enjoyed cooking in something new. Oh well.

[member name removed], I am sorry the sticker shock was so high. Lets see if we can find some options to bring the kitchen remodel down to a more manageable price. There are options! Thank you, David Moir Moir Construction Inc.

In my original solicitation for bids, I made it clear this was not going to be that dream kitchen featured on the cover of the Home section or design magazine. I needed a contractor who could work within a limited budget to accomplish a number of goals in an old house with some challenges in the design and original structure: upgrade the kitchen to enjoy now and be in a better position to possibly sell my home in the next 3-5; replace old, poor quality cabinets and have new cabinets accessible... current cabinets were so high, I could easily walk under the doors when open and barely reach the second shelves; increase work and storage space and improve "work triangle" if possible. Moir Construction?s initial bid was within the budget but did not show any breakdown of costs or design visuals. That gave preference to the second contractor bidding the job. The second contractor had first given a ?dream solution? which would have been wonderful but almost twice the budget and yet seemed willing to work on other options but then had difficulty scaling back so I went back to Moir and asked for a breakdown and hopefully, some visuals. I received both promptly and was impressed with concept, creative solutions, proposed quality, and cost. Gare was incredibly conscientious and every morning sealed the kitchen from the rest of the house; vacuumed, cleaned up, and un-sealed every day before leaving; and was mindful and considerate of pets, fumes, and dust. The cabinets, by Pat at Country Woodworking are outstanding with every single inch usable space. They were installed beautifully with Gare showing great attention to details. This old house with all its quirks, required a lot of workarounds. One glitch was the first week. They tore out the original cabinets, gutted the kitchen, disconnected all the appliances in about 4 hours on Monday and then on Tuesday the electrician worked about 3 hours and no one came back the rest of the week. There definitely was a lack of communication. As we proceeded, it was clear there were some details that had not been discussed or defined in the design or bid: windowsill treatment and material for example. A second order of tile was necessary but thankfully was available. Details were resolved nicely but could have been discussed in a more timely manner. Friends and family are all amazed with the transformation from the old to the new and I am delighted every time I walk into the kitchen and every minute I am there. It is beautiful and functional.

It went excellantly. The contractor, David Moir, came out to the house, discussed the job with us, gave us a bid on the job, and told us how long it should take to do the job. The carpenter that came out and actually did the work did an execllant job. He didn't come too early, or stay too late. He was friendly and courteous to us at all times, and he cleaned up after himself daily. He did a final clean-up of the site afterwards, and hauled away all the trash. The job was finished within the time frame estimated. We received an itemized bill, and it was almost exactly for the amount of the estimate. We were very pleased with this contractor and the job he did, and we expect to use him for another job in the future.
Description of Work: Built roof over short walkway and installed rain gutter. Removed old door. Installed new door. Removed dry rot and carpenter-ant damage and replaced damaged wood with new wood. Aplied carpenter-ant poison.

Overall, it went very well. Of course it was noisy and dusty, but they used tarps to protect the wood floors in the hallway and entryway. The crew was very patient with all my questions and kept me informed daily on what they were doing. Each morning I knew what to expect and how long they would be there each day. The workers were polite, respectful, and were great with my dog and three cats. I was very pleased with the outcome and get complements from family and friends. Working with stone can be tricky and I had some contrasting color inset between the 12x12 tiles. It just gave it a nice pop with the 3 inch smaller tiles angled like a diamond.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel. Walk-in shower, oak vanities, stone flooring and countertops, new rain glass window and matching shower doors, new light fixtures, new exhaust/light and heat lamp, new sinks (2) with faucets in brushed nickel and the hand-held in the shower.

Estimates were done completely and thoroughly and were fair. The workmen were courteous, on time, and did excellent work in all categories.
Description of Work: Performed complete remodel of kitchen, including flooring, cabinets, appliances, paint, lighting. The job was done with excellent sub-contractors and completed to my complete satisfaction. Moir also did a complete remodel of my bathroom, including new floor, cabinets, sink, and installed a walk-in bathtub. The job was done to my complete satisfaction. and more. Since the company is still family-owned and the same people listed, I assume their work is still oustanding.

this remodel costed half again as much as we were hoping to pay. and took two weeks longer then we thought it would. but moir construction was very specific about the cost and duration and they were spot on. we are planning to use moir construction when we build our master bedroom suite.
Description of Work: moir construction remodeled our kitchen and laundry room. they took the walls down to the studs and repaired the original faulty construction from 50 years ago and brought the whole site up to code. then they rebuilt the kitchen and laundry room. the replaced and painted the walls, installed new floors and cabinets and installed new appliances.

Based on the excellent reviews on this site and a clear OCCB record, I called Moir Construction for an estimate on an extensive repair job for a second floor outdoor patio. David Moir came out to do the estimate, and I was pleased with his punctuality and his presentation. He spent quite a bit of time with me talking about the project and answered all my questions thoroughly and to my satisfaction. He indicated that a written estimate would be forthcoming in approximately a week. I never heard from him. When I called the office to follow up, my phone call was not returned. I was very disappointed with this response. I would understand if he had decided that the project was not a good fit for his firm, but I considered it very bad form that I received no response at all. My A ratings are based on my experience with his visit to my home; the D rating is based on the subsequent lack of responsiveness.

I think the cost is going to be included in what I paid them previously because they were supposed to do that work back then. I'll see if they send me a bill. I'm hoping they consider it already paid for. They made a lot of assumptions about what I wanted and didn't discount details with me. They assumed things other than what I wanted so I had to have them keep going back and redoing things because we never really discussed what I wanted. We discussed basic things. They did the bathroom surround all the way to the ceiling and I didn't want it that high. They put in a different bath heater than I wanted. I assumed that when they got to certain points in the construction I could choose either A or B and they would discuss it with me. They didn't and they just plowed ahead. At one point the way they stained the framing totally didn't match the bathroom so I had to take pictures of it and send it to the contractor to tell him that it was horrible and I needed it to be fixed. I had to be on top of them all the time. Once I said something they would come back and fix it. They put the bath light, fan and a dimmer light on one switch so I had to have them change it. I had to be the contractor for the contractor. I had to be on them all the time because they were not going to ask me to make sure the work was okay. They made a lot of assumptions that I didn't know they were going to do. They always showed up when they said they were going to.
Description of Work: I used Moir Construction 3 1/2 years ago for a bathroom remodel. I just noticed last month that they never vented my bath fan so I called them and they came out today and did that work.

Response from Moir Construction
Member - I'm sorry you feel the way you do about the work we did. As for the venting of the fan, although it probably wasn't the best way to vent it at the time, it was vented to the soffit vent which meets code. The problem there is that eventually the screen on the soffit vent gets clogged and the fans efficiency goes down. On the rest of the items, I'm really sorry you couldn't apparently find the time back when we were doing the work or at least shortly after completion to let me know you were unhappy. Just like fixing the problem with the van as soon as you let me know there was a problem, I would have gladly come out and addressed your concerns. I haven't had but a couple of complaints like this in my almost 30 years of doing remodeling for folks but every complaint is of great concern to me and my business. Steve

Moir himself came out here. I liked everything about him except his price. I told him what I wanted. He was quick to let me know if he could do that. He gave me a price; but I did quite a bit of work myself and found another part of it, it was almost like I was a general contractor. His price was $1200 to gut the kitchen, which my son and I did for about 4 hours and that was nice. I did the work in $300. He is very professional. He really cared about the place and made sure he put the booties on. He is really a nice guy. He is very responsive. He took each one of my concerns on things we wanted a little out of normal kitchen. He was real. I did a lot of work myself. Other people did the gutted work for $250 and they paid my son $100 to help. We saved around $950. The price is the only reason I will not go with him in the future.
