On 10-3-23 Rodger put up this fence for my neighbor. His crew left post hole dirt on top of my rock landscaping and plants and left saw dust all over the cul de sac and curb. Rodger was not under contract with me bur that dies not give him permission to leave messes behind.
Description of Work: Nothing I would never work with this guy again- but he trashed my property doing work for the neighbor.

My mother hired Roger Bidwel to replace a fence between my property and my neighbors and to place a gate in a fence over a drainage grate which needs to be cleaned our but was previously under a fence and couldn’t be accessed. Rogers workers consulted the neighbor and instead of placing the gate where i needed it he placed it where the neighbor wanted it. I confronted Roger about this and he told me he thought that is where I wanted it, said that the neighbor was not consulted. Today I confirmed with his workers that that was a lie. The workers stated they had consulted the neighbor and changed the placement of the gate to where my neighbor wanted it. I confronted Roger about it and he refused to a acknowledge his lie. Alternatively, I took down the fence as it was on my property and I still needed to access the grate. Now the neighbor is building a new fence in between our property and has hired Roger. Roger is doing the work against my wishes despite not having documentation of property lines. The neighbor is refusing to provide me with documentation. I confronted Roger and he refused to speak to me because I was correcting him as he misquoted me and hung up the phone on me. Police have been called. Additionally his all male workers accused me of screaming and being irrational when I was speaking calmly in a loud voice. DO NOT HIRE this man if you are a woman. He was hired by 2 women and he went behind our back and did what the white male neighbor wanted and is now working for him again despite not having documentation on the property lines. Also in the contract on the fence it stated they would use existing post holes to replace the fence. They did not. They dug new holes. They also excessively spray painted my plants which are 100% on my property.
Description of Work: I needed a fence replaced and a gate over a gate .

I am the owner of Mc Kenzie Fence Co. & have reviewed this post , I had been hired in June of 2023 to replace a fence & gate between poster & her neighbor - that work was completed in June of 2023 - I had been contacted by poster's neighbor after poster has recently removed a shared fence & am currently under contract with poster's neighbor as his yard is exposed - it looks like this is a property line dispute & a current surveyor should be consulted as I am a licensed contractor - my crew & I were present on 9-14-2023 & have a different take on poster's words / actions & post - I do not have any current contractual relationship with poster & the spray paint indicated was completed by the local utility company as part of my fiduciary responsibility to determine underground utilities present - this post is inappropriate as her complaint is with her neighbor -

SHORT VERSION: A nightmare from start to finish. Had to go to small claims court to get the rest of our money back for work not performed. We would never recommend this company to anyone. LONG, DETAILED VERSION: On April 19, 2016 my husband and I meet with Roger Bidwell and he gives us an initial proposal for a fence project on our property. We emphasize how important it is that the new fence goes up right after the old one comes down because of our small dogs. He agrees and assures us he will also dog proof the fence for us. He emails us a contract to look over, but it has the previous owner’s name on it so we do not print it out or sign it. On June 6, Roger Bidwell picks up a cashier’s check for $4000 (75%+ entire bid cost of $5200). He brings an updated contract (in our name this time) and a change order for us to sign. He gives us a verbal estimate of 4-6 weeks for a start date that he says will confirm within the week. We request a receipt to be emailed to us for what we paid. Mr. Bidwell does not email us a copy of our receipt or confirm a start date. On June 22, we email for an update and request our receipt again. Mr. Bidwell assures us that he would get back to us the next day (June 24) however he does not get back to us until June 27. He states in his email that he has half of our materials available and ready for stain, but gives no start date. He says he will let us know when the utility locators will be coming to our property. We email again on July 9 to get an update. On July 13 Mr. Bidwell emails back to say that the utility locators will come within the week. The utility locator from USIC arrives on July 20 and marks the utilities. On August 1, my husband texts to see if we can get a start date for the project. Mr. Bidwell texts back and says he will be in contact with us the next day. We receive no call, email, or text, but around 10 am on August 2 the McKenzie Fence Co. crew shows up and proceeds to tear out the front portion of the east line fence. The crew leaves without telling me when they will be back, nor do they tell me that they’ve left a large gap of missing fence in the backyard. My husband calls and leaves Mr. Bidwell a voicemail asking him if we can get a “heads up” next time before the crew comes and find out when they plan to come back. We receive no response. On August 7 we send a detailed email expressing concerns over the project in hopes that Mr. Bidwell will address them before continuing with the project. My husband texts on August 13 to ask if Mr. Bidwell received our email. On August 15, my husband calls and leaves a message. On August 17, my husband texts again demanding to know when that week(end) the crew will be there to complete the work. We receive an email on August 19 that says that we can expect the crew to arrive at the first of the week to install the “east line & return/gate”. On August 25, the crew comes when we are not home. They install fencing from the gate to the street (approx 100ft) but do not complete the rest of the east line (approx 80ft) or the return/gate as promised. The 100 ft that were complete feature multiple cracked boards, dripped stain, substantial holes, warped boards, and protruding nails. We hear nothing from Mr. Bidwell after this. On September 10, my husband leaves a voicemail asking when they plan to finish the rest (the unfinished east line, the west line and the two returns/gates) as well as discuss repairing the inferior work that has already been done. My husband gives one last call on September 12 to no avail. From September 12 to October 22 we give Mr. Bidwell the opportunity to reach out to us, but he never does. On October 28 we send a termination letter along with a CCB pre-complaint notice via certified mail. During this time we hire a handyman to create a smaller fenced area to keep our dogs safe until we can obtain a refund from Mr. Bidwell. Mr. Bidwell responds to us in writing around Thanksgiving requesting we meet with him. We agree, asking for a copy of our receipt and our mutually signed contract. He meets my husband on our property on November 28 and requests we let him finish the work. He gives us a copy of an unsigned contract, a change order (signed only by me) and a photocopy of our check (not a receipt). He claims the work that was already completed is valued at $1,530.00. From December onward we attempt to work out an agreement that will satisfy both parties. Given our experience the past six months, my husband and I want thorough answers to our questions. At first, it seems he is willing to work with us, but eventually the communication deteriorates and we move forward and file a claim with the CCB. We are given a date of March 7 to meet with Mr. Bidwell and a liaison from the board. On March 6 the CCB office calls and tells us that our meeting date is canceled due to a small claims case Mr. Bidwell filed against us on March 1. But he never serves us. In the meantime, we meet two other former customers who have a had a nearly identical situation with him. We file a counterclaim at the end of summer. During mediation Mr. Bidwell attempts to get us to take the materials he's been "practically tripping on" in his workshop. We refuse and he agrees, at the request of the mediator, to return the $2470 to us. On September 15 he gives us a cashier's check to refund us for the unfinished work. We are relieved to get our money back but that can't make up for over a sixteen months of stress this company caused us.
Description of Work: Approx 250 sq ft of new fence and two gates/returns repaired/updated.

I am the owner of Mc Kenzie Fence Co & have recently been made aware of this "review" - This matter seems very inappropriate to revisit as the homeowner had mediated to their satisfaction with the appropriate agencies that govern my business prior to posting this "review" - which is anything but - I had to re-open my files to compare facts. I did visit the homeowner on or about April 18 2016 & submitted an estimate on or about April 19 2016 - change order was requested & produced on April 25 2016 which altered drastically the fence design & stain - another change order was initianted & produced on June 03 2016 which altered the design / stain & location - I entered into contract on or about June 06 2016 & began work on prestaining material & installed the front driveway fence but did not disturb the back yard fence. The homeowner had objected to some of the aspects of front fence after installation & inappropriately filed a claim prior allowing me an opportunity to inspect & propose a remedy - if any. My records indicate that an expected commencement & completion date was offered but never entered into - I did agree to volintary mediate - Angie's list does not represent Mc Kenzie Fence Co. I have been a contractor for quite some time before Angie's list came along & have enjoyed homeowners who have participated in the construction process with satisfing results & would hope that homeowner's would get involved with understanding all aspects of the construction process before signing anything. Sincerely - Owner Mc Kenzie Fence Co.

Horrible company. Never answers calls, takes days or weeks to reply to emails and hardly ever shows up to work. Once he has your money he won't care about your concerns anymore. Only works a couple hours when they do come. Gets angry when asked about fixing problems. Do your research and call the CCB before you hire and inquire about him. Run as fast as you can away from this company. If you hire them you will regret it.

I am the owner of this business & have reviewed the content from this review - as a contractor post recession - my pricing is geared to not extend credit for special order material - in my 26 years in business - this person is the record holder for interference - we did agree to mediate & the result was settled satisfactory - the work performed by my company has not been removed and has a beneficial value as a result - how does this equate to a failing grade ? - you get what you pay for - I have a 99% satisfactory rate based on volume of business - I would hope that any reviews on this site would result in the consumer being more involved with any trade they hire.

I hired Roger off a Craigslist ad in January and paid my contract in full for a small discount off the total price. With no incentive to get the job done it took almost six months to finish, even though the actual work time was less than 20 hours. There was an issue with the property lines even though Roger told me he would verify the location before work began. He then charged me extra for the work they had to redo. One part of the fence had a 13 inch gap at the bottom, boards were slapped up to cover the gap and he tried to charge me extra for that too! I needed a fence to keep critters out of the garden and ended up with an expensive nightmare. I would not recommend McKenzie Fence to anyone.

I am the owner of Mc Kenzie fence company & have reveiwed the member's post & compared it to my contract with her. The member's proposal had 9 options for her to choose from including stain which she choose but did not mention after which she had initiated three change orders with a total of 9 changes on them which she negotiated and signed. A delay occured when I was notified by her to stop work as the City of Eugene was involved in a neighbor complaint , after nothing was uncovered by the City of Eugene I was allowed to proceed. Upon completion of my contracted work I responded to many EMail's & site revisits to address remaining concerns that the member had at which time she paid her final invoice for all change orders that she had negotiated. The member'assertion that I would verify property lines is unsubstantiated , my contract allows for a survey prior to any start date as well as a completion date. The member's project was complete within 32 days ( including delays mentioned ) - Sincerely - Roger W. Bidwell - Owner / Mc Kenzie Fence Company

I interviewed several fencing contractors in our area. The quoted were very comparable. ' Roger Bidwell DBA: McKenzie Fence Company came to our home with several thick notebooks showing the quality of his work. He emailed me an extremely detailed and professional looking quote, After spending time reviewing each quote I decided to go with Roger Bidwell DBA: McKenzie Fence. The quote was dated 6/22/2011. We emailed and called Roger and ask how long the fence would take to build he told me 3 to 7 days. Which was the same as the other companies. We explained our summer schedule and he assured me he could get our fence done by the first week of August. We signed the contract and paid Roger. From that point he never returned another phone call, email or text. Not one. I tracked him down through Windemere Real Estate where he was listed as a broker. He told me he would have his crew out on August 7th and have the fence done by August 15th. When we returned from vacation nothing was done. Again no response from Roger. Finally August 22nd, 2011 his crew came by and tore down one sides of the fence. All the debris was left by McKenzie fence. It was finally hauled off by another party. After several phone calls to Roger where he would tell us the fence would be done in a few days, then no one showed up. We scheduled an face to face appointment with Roger he refused to attend. The fence sat unfinished until October 25th, 2011. We never heard back from Roger. I have emailed him several times asking when the back gate will be corrected as it is two feet shorter than the fence. He stated that 2 feet two short is acceptable. I went over his contract with him. He still refused to correct the issue or return any form of communication. As of today this situation has not been Corrected. Our overall experience was horrible. Very stressful. We cannot begin to explain our level of frustration with Roger Bidwell.
Description of Work: In Regards to Roger Bidwells response. I think the last portion of his comment describes exactly how dealing with him played out and continues to show the highest level of unprofessional. I am very frustrated that I was left to leave a negative comment on anyone. Nothing I posted is unsubstantiated or fabricated. Roger admits not being willing to come back and correct his mistake. When Roger came to give me the quote he pointed out the location of the neighbors retaining wall and our pond. He said that it would not be a problem. His crew also said it was not a problem. I watched the work being done. It did not appear to cause any delay in the process. Yes, my husband did go to Rogers house (his choice) as Roger would not return any form of communication. We were never given the opportunity to a completion date. We ask Roger several times for a completion date in writing. He flat out told us NO. Just for the record: This is just plain silly. The one and only time Roger actually showed up at our house to discuss the lack in progress of our fence he would not speak to me our look me in the eyes. When ask direct questions he never acknowledged me. He stormed off when pressed for some form of communication and I was in front of him. I am 5"2" 130 bs. Roger who is a least twice my size in weight used his stomach to push me out of the way Then accused me of pushing him. It was very bizarre and very unprofessional. And frankly he scared me. I felt very bullied by Roger. Rogers math is a little off. I signed the contract on July 22nd, 2011 the check processed on July 26th ,2011. The last day the crew worked on the fence was October 25th, 2011 That adds up to 91 days and counting. As of today thats 148 days... Roger told me would take 3 to 7 days and would be done the first week of August. To this day Roger refuses to correct the mistake, return our calls, emails, or text. Roger spelled out in his reply that he is unwilling to come back. To date the project is not finished. There is a substantial amount of debris left. The gate is still two feet short. Rogers own crew told me they are very frustrated and have been confronted by other clients. I was told they are dealing with the same situations on all the jobs.

Response from McKenzie Fence Co
This response is in regard to the member's post and comment on 12-5-2011 to my recent contract work with her. I am the owner of Mc Kenzie Fence. I have reviewed her complaint and I find It very unfortunate she is unsatisfied. It is certainly my intent to ensure that all aspects of my projects are met as to craftsmanship, value and performance expectations that are clearly spelled out in extensive contract form. My clients have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of their project, not just some, to ensure what they expect is what will happen. Prior to entering into contract the member had been provided an opportunity for an assurance of a completion date in writing and no such assurances or guarantees were excecuted as she asserts. Property line disputes and completion dates are always issues that I highly encourage client involvement. The fact of the matter is after checking my records prior to responding to this complaint; it was 64 days after her deposit to final completion, during which time I discovered when removing the fence that the neighbor's retainer wall and the member's pond in her back yard were attached to the fence, which caused some delay. Then the member had asked that no work be done while she was on vacation. The member's claim that debris was not removed by McKenzie Fence are not true. There seems to be a lot of unsubstantiated fabrication to her comments and sequence of events. The member has asked me to come back for some aditional work, and frankly I don't want to work for her anymore after she physically shoved me, sent her husband over to my personal house twice and stalked my fence crew after they left. Had she not engaged in this behavior then her words might have some validity. I certainly could have retaliated, but instead I remained professional and followed through on my obligations to finish what was agreed to in contract. I have been a licenced contractor in the State of Oregon for 23 years and in practicing my trade I continue to refine my operation to better meet my clients' needs. --- Sincerely , Roger Bidwell --- ( Owner Mc Kenzie Fence Co.)

Good from first contact for estimate. Workers were good and professional. I had a concern about when the gates would be installed after the fence was put up. Workers told me they would be back in a couple of day. When that did not happen I called Roger and inquired about the gates. When I told him what the workers state he told me they should not have said that because the gates were not built yet. I felt that the comminication was so-so.

Roger was prompt to provide an estimate, references, and a portfolio of other fence construction projects. His bid (and final price) was considerably lower than the other reputable firm we contacted. However, the start and completion time-lines lagged, and Roger was unresponsive to phone calls for several days. Overall, the fence turned out quite nice--a sturdy and attractive cedar fence that will last many decades in a challenging climate. We've received numerous compliments from neighbors and passers-by. I'd highly recommend McKenzie Fence, as long as the customer is patient.
