The removing of the old concrete went very well and we were very impressed with the crew and how well they did in all aspects of putting in the new concrete and the way they stamped and sealed the finished product. Not quite one year later we called to say that the color was flaking off in some areas and there were a few cracks we were concerned about. I texted Mica pictures and she said that she would talk to Jeff and get back to me. She called back and said that Jeff said they had used a new sealing product that he was not happy with and that in the spring (of 2020) they would come and put a new sealer on. In April I started texting Mica to find out when we could expect them, she said we were on their list. Long story short, I have texted several times now and left two voicemails regarding fixing our driveway - no replies and it in now August 30, 2020. Our driveway looks terrible and absolutely no customer service.

It was a long process, excavation in December and 2 months later for the pour due to inclement weather. In retrospect, we discourage anyone from having this done in the winter months, no matter what the contractor says about the temperature. But once it was done, we really liked how our new driveway, walkway, and entryway looked, was so nice! But then the cracking started on the driveway, well after the curing process had ended. We did not drive on the driveway for well over a month just to be extra careful. First it cracked across about 1/3 of the upper driveway, this about 4 months after the pour. Then a crack started across the lower entrance of the driveway a few months later, and we painfully watched it slowly crack for about a month, ending up all the way across, see uploaded picture. We know the contractor did not want our concrete to crack. But something went wrong on this one. Getting Jeff and Mika back here was very difficult once the job was completed. Several phone calls went unanswered, as well as text messages. Jeff did end up coming out twice to review it, along with Eugene Sand & Gravel reps. Since we felt it was still showing signs of continued cracking, Jeff ended up offering to write us a letter stating that no more cracking would occur. We said yes to the letter, just to have that in writing for our file. The letter never arrived, never heard from them again. Our neighbor ended up having Boles put in her new driveway right after ours, unfortunately she also ended up with an area that cracked. Main purpose of this review, as you go through your selection of contractors and bids, be sure to ask to see their work that had cracking occur like ours did. We looked at several driveways they had poured prior to making our decision, but did not consider asking to see the ones that had issues like ours with major cracking.

Boles did an excellent job in all areas. They came by three times to discuss the job and the refinements in the what we wanted done as we learned more about the possibilities and options. They were always courteous and understanding of our concerns since we were not knowledgeable as to what was possible or worth doing. Once we finally agreed on the parameters, they did an excellent job in execution. They were courteous and professional and also cleaned up afterwards. The job went smoothly in all areas.
Description of Work: We had an unfinished area/crawlspace area, for the water heater and furnace, that was largely dirt and gravel and covered by a plastic vapor barrier and wanted the plastic removed and the dirt/gravel covered in concrete.

The job went smoothly once the scheduling was arranged, which was a bit tricky. The job was done in peak "dry season" and many people were competing for the time. After the job was completed, Boles agreed to return and apply a sealer coat on the recent pour. What a nice touch!
Description of Work: We needed a vapor-barrier dirt floor storage area converted to a concrete storage area. The room was approximately 15 x 10 and had some complicated features because the house furnace and water heater were located there. So, space had to be carved out for those fixtures and the depth of the pour had to be adjusted to accommodate the irregularities.

I am so glad I decided to hire Boles Concrete for our driveway. They are one of the best contractors I've worked with. From the owners to the workers, I felt they were honest and trustworthy. They listened to our needs carefully and communicated very well. Along the way, there were some changes and additions due to newly discovered conditions. They were quite accommodating and very reasonable and fair on additional fees. It was a pleasure to watch the team work, not only because they worked efficiently and diligently, but also because they worked happily. When the crew is happy, you know the company is doing things right and you know they want to do a good job. We will definitely hire Boles again for future concrete work. Thank you, Jeff, Mika, and the entire crew.

Description of Work: Unfortunately, the rainy winter caused this project to be dragged out from October through March. During that time, the backyard was pretty much unusable. While contractors cannot control weather, the communication could have been much better. Sometimes emails and phone messages went unanswered for weeks at a time. On the other hand, the owners are very nice people and do excellent work. Their pricing was fair, meaning competitive. At the point of adding color and sealant, half of the job was done by the owner and was perfect. The other half was left to a younger man, resulting in a few goofs and missed spots. Still, I would recommend Boles Concrete to my friends. As mentioned, my biggest complaint was their inattention to my communication attempts.

This was not the cheapest bid we received to give us a new driveway, but we were impressed at every turn by Boles. We first spotted them at a Eugene Home Show. We scheduled a visit and a bid. All aspects of the project were discussed with us. We chose our colors and patterns at a home visit where we were able to see many selections. We were always able to reach Mr. or Mrs. Boles by phone, and they also called us to keep us updated on progress with the project. The crew they work with are friendly, professional and industrious. They were on top of all aspects of the project from removing hundreds of very heavy pavers to the final coat and even the re-installation of our small back porch (which we didn't expect but appreciated.) I would definitely use their services again.
Description of Work: Installed a new driveway. Removed the old pavers, installed drainage pipe, installed rebar and gravel and tamped it down, poured our selection of colored concrete and meticulously leveled the surface, stamped the pattern, added pattern-enhancing sealer.

Great; they showed up on time and completed the work quickly, left the work site clean and closed the gate behind them - all that I asked or wanted and more.
Description of Work: Removed a an approx 4' x 4' concrete patch in my patio that didn't match the patio surface; in addition, they back-filled the hole with gravel (at no cost) so I wouldn't have to place so much fill myself when installing pavers in that location.

We'd already received three bids for driveway repair and widening the backyard walkway but decided to get a fourth bid from Boles. So glad we did!! We met with Mika Rowe, who talked us through our options for the needed repairs, obviously very knowledgeable, and she also -- unlike the previous 3 bidders -- saw other areas that could use improvement, such as the carport drainage and the awkward entryway stoop. For the latter, Mika noticed that people tended to step off the narrow concrete walk to the front door and to cut across an area of bark dust to get to the back gate; she suggested expanding that area of concrete. Plus the front stoop had steps on two sides, whereas the natural place to step off was in the middle -- so she suggested wrapping the step all around. Brilliant! Not only were the ideas for other improvements welcome but also Boles came back with their bid promptly and with a very competitive rate. The work was done professionally, with good communications during the project, and we have been thoroughly pleased with the results. We will certainly look to Boles for future concrete jobs on our property.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced concrete on driveway. Created a drainage egress onto street for carport roof drainpipe. Expanded concrete area around front entryway, with step completely encircling front porch. Widened long curving walkway in backyard sufficient to allow for cart or wheelchair or walker.

Mika came to our home and spent time with us, showing us the materials, colors, and choices we could make. Jeff came by to do the estimate. They answered our phone calls and questions. We then changed our minds and altered the size of the job. They gave us a new estimate. When we accepted, they began work immediately. They were prompt and efficient. Jeff and his crew were friendly. We received calls from both Mika and Jeff explaining any delay or weather concern, and even letting us know that the rain falling on the sealant might cause it to be cloudy, and if so, they would come fix it. The porch looks better than I could have imagined. They made it not only functional, but beautiful, too. I am so impressed with the work done.

Jeff and Mika were great to work with, and their team did excellent work. I had several contractors come look at the site. Boles provided the best mix of price and recommendations on how to execute the work. They gave their input on what could be done but never tried to talk me into one option or another. The bid was done at a fixed cost and when the soil turned out to be harder than expected, they didn't ask to revise the pricing. The team doing the work kept the area as clean as possible, and checked with me before doing any work that would disrupt other parts of the property. Once the ground was cleared and they were ready to lay the forms, they checked in with me and discussed one unusual sloping area that would need to be blended with the existing driveway. The schedule was delayed a little due to some equipment problems, but Jeff let me know how that affected timing and I had space in my schedule, so it wasn't an issue. But I felt that, if it was, Jeff would have worked to find a faster solution. Overall good people to work with and I'm very happy with the end product. Very much recommended.

Response from BOLES CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION
We strive hard to satisfy our customers. If the broken excavator would have prevented us from getting this project done when needed by the homeowner, we would have rented one at our cost. We believe the best way to do business is honesty, clear communication, and exceeding our customers expectations. By doing this, we are confident our business will continue to suceed. It is important to us to do what our bid states, at the price we stated. We don't have "hidden" charges at the end of the project like some of our competitors.

First of all this is NOT Todd Boles company and has not been for many years. The owner Jeff and a female assistant (whose name I don't remember) were both very nice. I met the co at a home show and had them come out for an estimate along with 2 other companies. Cost wise they were in the middle and seemed the most professional. Very poor communication skills ie not returning phone calls. It took forever to actually set up the job itself. I also wanted them to stain existing concrete that was also in the backyard. The work was done on the only sunny day amongst weeks of rain. The actual job was very nice however soon after there were hair line cracks. I was told that concrete cracks which I understand however it should not have happened so quickly. The patio was covered with furniture, area rugs and a huge gazebo so it wasn't until the gazebo fell and broke that I realized how bad the problem had become. My landscaper came to take the gazebo apart and took everything off the patio. He said you better take a look at this patio there are cracks everywhere. Sure enough there are cracks that go thru the entire concrete and all the way across as well as cracks that break from the main lines and go in either direction. The cracks are not huge but hairline and I don't believe the patio is going to float away however it looks very bad. I saw the female at the next year's home show at the fairgrounds (this is after repeated phone messages to them that were never answered) and she remembered my name and still insisted that I was on their list to stain my other concrete patio. I brought up the cracks again and she said you know concrete cracks and when people complain about it and we try to fix it they think it looks worse. Well what she was really telling me was that this happends all the time with their work. When I asked why none of my calls were returned she gave me this story of how Jeff had been sick. ( I ended up getting the other concrete stained by a painting co) So I just gave up. In the future when I have the money I plan to cover it up with stone like a kitchen counter which is going to cost at least 2K. When i tell shops or contractors about the situation they all say "Well that doesn't sound like Todd Boles" - well that's because it's not. DO NOT use Boles.

Response from BOLES CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION
We strive very hard to take all measures to prevent cracking. We excavate for a proper subgrade of compacted rock. We pour a minimum 3500 psi concrete mix and always use rebar for reinforcing. Our company prides itself on always exceeding industry standards. Todd Boles who I worked for as foreman for ten years before purchasing the company from him 10 years ago, instilled the practices that we still employ today. Even if Todd doesn't own it, we still have the same practices and even some of our original work crew, so things haven't changed, as I was responsible for day to day activities before purchasing the company. We pride ourselves on our reputation and have a great record with the ccb and thousands of happy customers through out Lane County. We are unable to control concrete cracking, we can only take appropriate measures to prevent them. We are very clear with all customers and have an important concrete facts sheet we hand out explaining concrete and the construction process. We also encourage each potential customer to look at completed work examples and talk to former customers to make certain they feel solid about their contractor choice. We didn't want your patio to crack. As said above though, they are hairline cracks that the homeowner didn't see until pointed out by her landscaper. Fortunately they are hairline cracks and will never grow larger, shift, or settle. Without the rebar and proper subgrade, there would be issues over time, but with it done properly, there will be no issues. We do not supply the concrete, we purchase it from Eugene Sand and Gravel. Research also shows that if concrete is going to crack, it generally does soon after the pour while the concrete is curing. It does not continue to crack over time when the job has been properly completed. We have worked with their quality control team and pour a consistent mix that will last over time, as is evident on our thousands of completed jobs. We initially had a very busy schedule when you wanted your other area stained and unfortnately couldn't get to it as soon as you had wanted us to. Then the rainy season came and you were on an extended trip out of town after that when our schedule and dry weather were both ready for you. When you called us after returning home from your trip, we did add you to our schedule but were sincerely booked up and we put you on our schedule with that explanation. We are a small company and try very hard to give personable service and exceed our customers expectations. As time went on and you stated we weren't the "real" Boles Concrete and that you continued to berate my company, I felt it was in both of our best interests to not stain your patio. I felt it would be impossible to please you in a productive way if you were already upset in your choice of hiring us for your patio. Mika, my assistent who you spoke with throughout the process and I also tried to call you, the homeowner in an attempt to remedy this situation, however you apperently have a different phone now. We sincerely want our customers satisfied and that is why we exceed industry standards every step, as well as using good communication. We know in the end, we have given you a beautiful patio that will endure the test of time.

I have used Boles concrete twice in the past. When the company was owned by Todd Boles they poured a flawless Barn floor for me. However, the last job was a concrete patio and stairs. The patio involved inlaid brick. The dimensions of the brick inlay area was incorrect, subsequently we have immense grout lines around the inlay. The stairs are not close to level and we have multiple areas where water pools and does not drain. The sand finish was done very well.

Their work on the concrete pad was superlative. Since we have exposed concrete flooring (for a radiant heating system), the placement of the joints, integral color, and staining were critical. Jeff Boles lined up placement of the expansion joints with doorways and anticipated foot traffic. When there were challenges with a new staining technique, Boles insisted on redoing it at their own expense. It looks incredible!
Description of Work: Boles Concrete "did it all" for us when we built our new home in 2006. This included: 600 linear feet of sidewalk; foundation work including a unique "fuzzy" finish on exposed surfaces; and over 1000 sq.ft. decorative concrete pad. Cracking in the year since we moved in has been minimal and much less than expected.
