I had a roof leak right in the middle of the Christmas holiday and of course rainy season. Stalcup did their best to get me scheduled as quickly as possible and the work was done well for a very reasonable price. I was happy with the professional job done and would hire them again.

I called Stalcup for advice on our metal roof (that had been installed by a different company). I spoke with Jeremy and he spent a lot of time with me on the phone, answering questions and offering advice. I was very thankful to get some professional insight. Much appreciated!

I had a problem with previous work performed. I brought this to the attention of the owner. Mr. Peters reviewed my concerns, came out to meet with me and to check the work in question, and he then had the problem corrected in a timely manner. I appreciate Mr. Peters' willingness to work this out with me.

This company was subcontracted by our general contractor to replace the roof on our big, old house, built in 1910. When I returned home on the first day of work, the gate to my backyard was left wide open, roofing debris was left piled up everywhere and blocked exit from our back door and basement access, leaving only one door operational to our house, which is a fire hazard. A stone pathway between the sidewalk and the street was trashed with several flagstones broken. Roofing debris and nails were left in the public sidewalk. My next door neighbor came over to my house to complain about the extensive roofing debris in her yard and on her deck. Our general contractor supervisor made them clean up the site over the next two days, but then the work slowed down. We have a large house with a complex, multi-level roof, and I don't think there was ever more than 2 people working at a time after that. I had arranged for work to start when my wife and 6 month old baby were out of town. Our general contractor had arranged for the roofing company to work on the weekend to make up for the delayed work, but no one showed up on the weekend, no explanation given. One of their roofers smashed the hand-built, sturdy wooden gate on our fence, apparently hitting it with lumber thrown off our roof. They left piles of roofing debris in our attic, also a fire hazard. I've found multiple areas where the plywood sheathing they put down over the existing skip sheathing is broken with significant gaps. Even after our general contractor supervisor pointed it out, and the roofers said they would fix the broken plywood, they didn't fix it and just shingled over it. And these are just the problems that I, a lay person, have found on my own. What other shortcuts and shoddy work are now hidden beneath shingles??? Today was the day they were supposed to be finished with the job, after the day before was supposed to be the day the job was finished, after it was supposed to be finished over the weekend, after it was supposed to be finished last week. One guy showed up today. They still have a lot of work to do without even correcting all the shoddy work I've described above. Now my 6 month old baby is home again, and all the noise is disrupting her sleep during the day, and I'm paying for that at night. I don't know when they will "finish" the work, and I can't express how unhappy I am with the job. I know the roofing supervisor is hearing about these problems, I don't know why they don't care to make this right. Our contractor says they've had good experience with these guys. Needless to say, I would never use this company again. I hope the owner of this company reads this: Shame on you--you should be embarrassed by this poor quality work and service. A note about the price--I don't actually know how much they are charging for this job. My bill from my general contractor was much more than $25k. I estimate that as the price to be fair, but I expect they are actually getting more than that. UPDATE: The roofing company did repair the broken plywood. Our general contractor did the clean up in our attic, and I believe the roofers did the exterior clean up. In the end, our property was left clean. Our general contractor is satisfied with how the roof has finished. I am still completely unsatisfied with the process and I would never recommend this company to anyone.

Response from Stalcup Roofing
This review is with out a doubt unfair. On such a large project you have to allow the proses to take place and not rush the job for the safety of the workers and the quality of the work. 8 total days for such a large job is in no way out of line? ( 2 days was weekend). I am glad to hear the end product turned out good, my company always deals with any concerns in a professional fashion, however sometimes you just can't please everyone no mater what you do. There is way more to this situation then it appears, but in the end Stalcup Roofing stayed the course and delivered a great job and always addressed every concern brought up.

It didn't work out very well. They didn't cleanup in the way that we expected and they left a few things unfinished. We called immediately and they sent someone out who agreed they needed to do a bit more work and they should have done a better job of clean up. He was going to send some people out but they didn't come on the day he said they would but that was because they had a roofing accident and some guy died and 3 others were hospitalized. We didn't blame them for not coming out the day they said. They came out the following week. We might use them again but we don't know.

I requested quotes from 4 companies, Stalcup responded immediately and scheduled an appointment within 3 days. The estimator was on time and presented a written quote that day. He left brochures, was very professional and answered all questions. Of the 4 quotes I received, they and another company came in almost identical, they were the lowest, by a few dollars, but I was not concerned as the other company was so close. All offered the same service and product choice and product guarantee, but the other two quotes were almost $4000 higher. Upon comparing the quotes side by side I noticed that the two lowest were located very close to my house and the other two were over 40 miles away. In addition, the higher quotes included a porta potty, the two lower ones did not. The workers came on Labor day (as scheduled) and had the roof completely torn off , sheeted and papered, in two days. There was a surprise freak thunder storm and howling winds the first night, some of the tarping blew off and a resulting leak came into my bedroom closet. It was not too bad, but very unnerving. I called them in the middle of the night in a tizzy and left a message, the owner called me at 4:30 AM to apologize and sent a worker out to fix the situation. By 6:30 fans and supervisors appeared, they offered to replace or fix all affected areas and paint whatever water stains might remain. As I didn't feel there was enough damage to warrant all that, they did a secondary siding and door footing scheduled job free of charge. The invoice was exactly as estimated, this was a FHA loan situation and the office had to do a few more things than normal so could submit my invoice to the bank. They were very helpful . The crew was professional and friendly and I felt I was in good hands. The clean up was good and the resulting job looked fantastic.

This company is very professional. I got six bids and they were the lowest. They applied a quality black, architectural roof and did some extra flashing. I had on tarry spot that needed some extra work and they came back a few days later at my request to touch it up. The first day they tore off my old roof they had 9 guys and a big semi-truck. Very large operation. The next day they finished up the job with 4-6 guys. I'm very happy with the job they did and they cleaned up all their mess. Very easy to deal with and they didn't even require any deposit. I should also note, out of the six bids I got, Cascade Roofing was the the most expensive and the worst, they tried to up-sell me on stuff I didn't need, and their estimator must have sold used cars int he past. They really annoyed me.

The price was good. When we thought there was a problem with the roof it actually was not but it was a problem with a water heater. They were very responsive with coming out even though it ended up having nothing to do with the roof once they came out. The roof is great and it looks good. They did the job when they said they would and they finished on time. They cleaned up after themselves as well.

We called four or five different companies about and Stalcup Roofing was here within two hours to look at the place. Job was done in just over one day, with a good cleanup around the house afterwards. A little inconvenience occurred with the scheduling, as our calenders were one day off from each other, and the date had been done over the phone instead of written (email or letter). When they showed up a day early (by my notes) we were a bit unprepared outside with moving things out of the way, which they helped with. They arrived early, leaving our gate open, thankfully not when our dog was outside ready to run away. Since they had to return to install a skylight, everything was written down and clear voice mails given to us as well. They only thing they have not followed through on was sending a Lien release form, indicating their supplier had been paid in full. I don't like having to ask three times for things, so I'm still waiting for the Lien release.
Description of Work: They were the first ones to come out and bid on the project, sending the numbers on the same day they looked at the roof. A metal roof was installed after tearing off a layer of old asphalt shingles. A skylight was added later.

The job seemed to go fine at the beginning. The workers showed up on time and cleaned up the debris at the end of the workday. After the job was competed we paid the bill in full. A number of months later we discovered about 60% of the vents did not work due to improper installation. We asked Mr. Stalcup to return to discuss the matter. After looking over the work he stated he knew exactly why the vents weren?t working and for an additional $600 he would return to complete the necessary repairs so all the vents would perform as designed. He sent us another estimate shown below; FOR WORK TO BE PERFORMED: Remove bottom four courses of roofing on back of roof from edge of dormer to the right end of roof. On front of house remove bottom four courses of roofing from the left front corner to the front porch roof. Remove 34? strip of decking as needed to remove bird block wood obstruction. Reinstall the ¾? strip of decking and reinstall underlayment, roofing and vent system. If more work is needed to be done once the roof is opened up, There will be an extra charge to be determined at that time. $600.00 Minus 15% previous work discount. -$ 90.00 Total: $510.00 After reviewing the second estimate we felt we had no choice but to go ahead and have Mr. Stalcup repair what he failed to do right in the first place so we signed the second contract. After the work was completed we got to thinking about having to pay the extra charge for something not done right in the original contract. We notified Mr. Stalcup we had contacted the Construction Contractors Board in Salem Oregon to see if we had any options of getting our money back from the second contract. We spoke with 3 individuals who all seemed to agree we should not have had to pay to repair what was not done correctly the first time around. We began proceedings by filing a complaint with the CCB. Our complaint was accepted and the board sent a mediator to see if we could reach an agreement. Mr Stalcup was present and offered $200 to settle the matter which we refused. A hearing was scheduled with a judge at the CCB. The ruling on August 8th 2011 was it didn?t matter that the work wasn?t completed in a satisfactory manner. What mattered was we signed the 2nd contract which according to the judge ?trumped? the first contract. Needless to say this experience has had a profound effect on how we deal with contractors in the future. We no longer will accept opinions by the CCB who apparently don?t know what they?re talking about and we will never contract with Stalcup Roofing for any future work nor will we recommend them to friends, family or co-workers or anyone else who inquires if we know a good roofer. The incompetence of both Stalcup and the CCB is astounding to say the least and we recommend you stay as far away as possible from both as possible. We know we will. We?d also recommend you contact an attorney to review any contracts you are considering signing to make sure your interests are protected in case of a dispute with the contractor. Do not rely on the CCB of Oregon to look out for you because in our opinion they are only looking out for the contractors. The long and short of our experience with Stalcup Roofing is that approximately 60 percent of the roof vents were not installed properly on the original attempt otherwise we would not have had them return to correct the mistake. No mention was ever made that the job had been done right the first time. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Update as of December 2012. Recently the skylight that Stalcup claimed was installed correctly began to "leak". Our new contractor discovered the flashing around the skylight was not installed correctly. In addition, Stalcup either forgot, didn't care or didn't want to add insulation to one whole side of the skylight shaft which had been causing condensation (hence the "leak") for over 2 years. Another mess created for us to repair at additional cost. The worst part of this whole unfortunate, expensive, annoying and sad episode with Stalcup Roofing is not the installation of dysfunctional roof vents or skylight, poor workmanship, cost over runs or lack of knowledge --the worst part is losing peace of mind. Now over 2 years after the fact, we are left in our home wondering every time the temperature drops, or it rains or the wind blows what else is going to go wrong with our roof and skylight. It's an ever evolving nightmare wondering what we're going to find next to fix and/or replace....certainly not a comforting way to live. So after all this damage, time and expense due to our mistake in hiring Stalcup Roofing we strongly suggest you research and get in writing your expectations and what will happen if things go sideways. We'd advise you not to hire Stalcup Roofing in the first place. We made that mistake and we're still paying for it to this day. Please don't repeat our unfortunate error!
Description of Work: We hired Stalcup Roofing to install roof vents as a way to improve the air flow in the rake area of our attic. We indicated we had an odor in our house we were trying to get rid of and thought new vents would help. We also indicated we weren’t worried if the odor went away we just wanted the vents to work as they were designed to do. Mr Stalcup said his company never installed this kind of vent before but he assured us they would function properly. The amount was $1275 to be paid at the completion of the project. Below is the estimated cost: Remove bottom 2-3 rows of shingles on back of house and both ends of front of house. (Does not include front porch.) Cut in venting along bottom edge and install new smart vent. Install new ice and water shield over smart vent, tying into old underlayment. Install new Malarkey Oxford Gray dimensional/composition shingles, tying Into old roofing properly. (Color blend will not match exactly.) $1,275.00

Stalcup roofing is very diapointed with these comments. We did everything we could to make this coustomer happy and did exactly what we were hired to do. When they felt we in some way wronged them they took us before the builders board who found in are favor 100%. I am suprised the coustomer would use this site to vent there disapointment with that fair decision. We have copys of the builders board finndings along with letters from the coustomer that talk about what a great job we did. We would be more than happy to provide copys of this info to any potetial coustomers. We have nothing to hide. Thanks Heath Stalcup

1) The $750 worth of insulation put in the attic was piled haphazardly instead of laid out neatly, covering the entire space. I had to point this out to get it fixed. 2) The gutter downspouts were not placed where I asked. One was even standing alone instead of against the pillar where the previous one had been. It looked terrible. I had to complain to get this fixed. 3) The gutters in teh back of the house did not even line up at the corners - the gaps were visible. After complaining, these were fixed, Unfortunately so badly fixed that a few hears later I had to have the entire section replaced. They never did drain right and had begun to lift away from the house. 4) I was quoted a price for all new sheeting for every part of the roof. That is what I agreed on. On the back section of the house, the sheeting was visibly warped - therefore was not new. Stalcup was forced to adjust the bill. 5) I asked for and was quoted a price for replacing all of the fascia boards. Again, on closer inspection, it bccame obvious that less than half the boards had been replaced. when I asked, I was told they didn't all need to be replaced. Well that was not what I was paying for. I insisted they come back and replace them, which they did. 6) Shortly after installation, a huge leak develped on the back section of the roof. This was fixed. 7) Some of the workders were observed urinating in the backyard. It was a terrible experience. I caught this much. I must have missed more. I now have to have the entire back section of the house re-roofed. It leaks. And part of my newly remodeled bathroom is ruined.
