I did not commission a stone project from Matt, but I wanted to leave a review expressing some gratitude for the time he took to help consult me on my project. Matt took personal time on a weekend to return my call (I found him through an Angie's List search) and not only answer my questions about the project, but give me general advice.

My wife and I are the homeowners and I was the general contractor of our Patio Project in 2005. In addition to “Poetry In Stone”, we used concrete cutters, electricians, plumbers, hardscape and fountain installers in the completion of this courtyard project. Hiring Matt of “Poetry In Stone” was extremely fortunate. My experience as a contractor was nil. Matt, with his background and keen eye for detail, was able to supply me with information that was in part responsible for making the project the success that it was and is. But it was his stone work that sealed the deal. Matt’s job was to cut the heavy uneven blue slate stones in varying sizes, lay it and mortar it within the patio and around the circular fountain and circular drain such that water would drain successfully from the stone’s surface and yet give the appearance of being level. My wife and I also desired a random, “natural” feel to the stones. What we got was an incredibly beautiful patio that has enhanced and added value to our 1909 craftsman bungalow. The water continues to drain perfectly. The stones have not settled, moved or uttered words of protest. To date there are NO cracked stones nor cracked mortar joints! And the patina on the stone has made the patio even more gorgeous than when first completed. Would I recommend Matt? You bet!

Matt started the fireplace in late 2003. It took a couple of months to complete, but he was working on other jobs at the time. I worked closely with him on the initial design and materials. From there his abilities completely exceeded my expectations. He knew I wanted a Craftsman-like style, but with something a little extra. The stone is dark and colorful, full of brown, red and orange tones. The irregular pattern keeps it interesting. The design of the cracks and gears gives it a very steampunk vibe, but not cheesy at all. It all works very well with the existing wood stove insert. Very special attention was given to the shroud to ensure a tight fit and it blends so well with the stove design. It's a stunner. Again, I wish I could include some photos.
Description of Work: I bought my house in 2002. It's a 1927 bungalow style, but it had a fireplace that had been done sometime in the '50s or '60s with that ugly pink brick with gold flecks in it. The only nice thing about it was the wood stove insert with a neat Mt. St. Helen's design on the doors. I decided to re-do the entire wall with built-in cabinets and a new fireplace facade. Dimensions are just under 5' x 5'. The hearth height is at about 1.5 feet tall. Matt covered the fireplace with a new veneer made out of Bitterroot stone. It was cut in a square and rectangular pattern. Grout chosen was black. The stone was placed very nice and even with about half-inch spacing between stones. Various areas were cut out to look like cracks in the stone, and assorted metal gears and cogs were placed behind it. He also replaced the boring flat steel shroud with a hammered metal and riveted one that he created completely from scratch. He also made matching metal and riveted guards on both edges of the hearth. It even has a beautiful bronze tile with his Medusa company logo in relief on the top! Fantastic! I wish I could share some photos. Words do not do it justice.

Matt arrived early each morning and stayed late every night. He made sure that every stone cut fit perfectly with another stone piece to keep joints no bigger than a dime. Matt spent time putting tarps down to minimize mess and cleaned the area at the end of each day of the project. Matt was very attentive to detail and seemed to really take pride in his work. It shows! The paths are beautiful and well built. I have checked out other rock walls and pathways in the area and without a doubt, Poetry in Stone's work easily stands above. I highly recommend Poetry in Stone to anyone who appreciates exceptional quality work. Matt's work is timeless. My pathways get used heavily and will last for hundreds of years!
Description of Work: Poetry in Stone created two stone pathways for the front of my house. Matt helped me make decisions with color selection, type of rock, and layout of the paths. After hand picking all the stones, Matt cleared topsoil and measured out the pathways taking into consideration the depth and slope of the natural area. Matt cut no corners. He did the project right by compacting a bottom layer of gravel to stabilize the ground and create a level surface. All the mortar was dyed to the color of my choice and mixed on site. Matt consulted with me about the layout of the stones and how they should fit together to create interesting patterns. Matt hand cut each stone to piece together the pathway and spent time making sure that the joints fit just right. He also added two columnar basalt columns to either side of the front path. His sense of space, line and color is a major reason my paths are so cool!

I was familiar with Matt's work through mutual friends and I asked him to come by and give me an idea for building a set of stone steps in my front yard. I had some idea of what I wanted to do, but I had not decided on what kind of stone to use and how much the project might cost. Matt worked with me on and off for a period of about two-three weeks during which time we came up with a design, selected stone, figured out a budget and worked together to complete the project. I have some experience in construction so I was eager to work as the laborer on the job and learn something about stonework from a pro. It was a great experience and I look forward to doing a patio and fireplace in backyard with Matt as soon as time and money permits. It was helpful to refer to Matt's website at Poetry in Stone as well some design books to get a clear idea of what I wanted. Matt has a great eye for detail and I appreciated his advice what kinds of stone would work well together. We spent time touring Smith Rock (Johnson Creek Rd.) to see what was available and to get an idea of costs. Smith Rock is an excellent source for advice and materials and they were a pleasure to work with as well and very reasonable in price. Will Hornyak
Description of Work: Matt Goddard is the BEST and the name "Poetry in Stone" says it all: he's an artist as well as a craftsman and if you tour his website you'll get the idea. You can't go wrong if you hire Matt for stone work of any kind -- patios, walls, staircases, fireplaces and beyond. Matt provided excellent design ideas and superb workmanship for a set of granite steps and a landing in my front yard. It has become the showcase piece of the house. As well as being a pleasure to work with (on time, upbeat, energetic, communicative) he is an experienced master stone mason who knows his materials and his craft inside and out. He is well respected among the stone masons in the Portland area and beyond. I have seen his work first hand at a number of Portland sites over 12 years and cannot recommend him highly enough. As stated above, this was the best experience I have had with any contractor where I have spent this much money. I was a little worried about having a contractor work on a time and material basis, but Matt keep detailed records of every expense, and I felt I was getting my money's worth. I really like that he did not put a mark up on the materials, thus making him very competitive for a time and material job. When they were all done, they cleaned thoroughly .
Description of Work: Go from bare ground to beautiful flagstone patio. Phase one. The Consultation : Matt came to my home and for a small fee drew plans and rough sketches of the project. Matt and my wife worked together until they both agreed on an approximate look for the finished project. Phase 2 The Contract: Matt is a super detailed contractor and thus the contract seemed a little overwhelming at first, however, he explained every line and detail. He made us feel that we were working with a real professional . Work begins: On warm day in mid Sept. two large drop boxes appeared in our driveway (we knew they were coming). Matt and his assissant began filling those boxes with soil and debris taken from our backyard. It seemed almost overnight there was a shape to our new patio. Next was delivery and installation of many yards of gravel. Next four inches of concrete was poured over the gravel and broom finished. Our patio now looked like all other concrete patios I had seen. Matt informed me the serious work was yet to begin. The arrival of the flagstone. Specially ordered from Oklahoma ! Also some antique reclaimed granite cobblestones. The pieces were large, and were hand cut into unique shapes just for our patio. The installation of the flagstone took about a month. The finished patio: We are now the owners of a work of art! My wife is so happy , and I'm impressed with the skill and artistic ability shown by Matt and his assisstant. .
