carpet installation

My husband and I had just purchased our home and found that the downstairs carpet needed to be replaced because of urine odor from the previous owner's dog. I contacted Coast Carpet's owner, John, who came out immediately to measure. Because this was a rush job, it was necessary to choose from his available stock, which was extremely limited. I chose the carpet I thought we could best live with and he arranged to have it installed quickly. Once the installers entered the picture, my experience with Coast Carpet became a nightmare. First, they tracked mud on the light colored carpet. I asked the lead installer very politely if they would remove their shoes and whether they intended to clean the area where the mud had been tracked. When he told me they wouldn't, I thought he was joking. I pursued it, and he became somewhat belligerent. Later I told the owner what had transpired and he accused me of expecting too much from them considering they were, very kindly, doing a favor by working quickly. He said these were his best installers and they'd been working for him for a long time with no complaints. This set the tone for their remaining time in our home. After all that had happened, I was surprised to find that the last piece of carpet, which was Berber, appeared to be striped in some places with faded color in others, although the part of the roll I'd seen in the warehouse had no pattern. Of course, when I brought this to the attention of the owner, he said that it was the way the light was hitting it. Next, my husband tried to sort out the problems with him. Although he was less polite than I was, he was definitely not rude. Still, John threatened him and told him to leave his place of business immediately. The last incident occurred soon after the installation was complete: I found several seams that were coming apart. I also found a run in the Berber carpet. John told me he'd fix the seams, but he thought the run wasn't bad enough to worry about. Therefore he wanted to wait to see if the run got worse before he repaired anything. I've never had this kind of experience with any service provider, and after all these years it still amazes me that, along with the shoddy product and workmanship, we were treated so poorly. I've described this experience in such detail because it was so horrendous.
Description of Work: Carpet was installed on approximately 1000 S.F. and vinyl was installed in a small bathroom and in a very small laundry area.
