 + -1 moreMark and his crew arrived on time and worked very hard all day long. I had questions and changes to what I wanted done that day and he complied very happily. In fact, his whole crew was helpful with my questions. They first removed the pine, then moved onto the willows and removed two out of the three and trimmed the third. The cottonwood was next. They were working off a semi busy street with cars and school buses passing by and were very careful not to disturb the flow of traffic unless it was a safety concern. I asked Mark to blow the chips from all the trees back onto the property for mulching purposes. This was also a task because he was blowing them up a hill and all around. The crew then removed the birch in another part of our yard and then brought the chips down to the side yard where I wanted them. They asked me if the clean up was good, etc., which it was. Mark also came back and cut one more small shrub a week later when I asked and didnt act as if it was a bother. He really works hard to please you. When I was first looking on angies list for tree removal, I did see Mark's name in a review and then realized that he had done work for a several years back and removed 2 trees at our old house. He did such fine work that I hired him again after going thru all the information of what I needed done this time. It confirmed that he has been consistantly excellent over these years! Thanks so much Mark and crew! We look forward to working with you in the future as we will need some of our other trees trimmed!
Description of Work: Mark came out promptly and gave me a bid for the removal of several trees and trimming of a few. We had one very large cottonwood, one double stump pine, a clump of willows and a birch tree. He went over the reasons why I could either trim or remove the trees. We talked about growth habits, disease, etc.

 + -1 morePERFECT. And, more then PERFECT. Westside Tree & Land Co (1) Showed up right on time. (2) Every single member of their crew was friendly, helpful and very professional. (3) The falling of five 90 to 100 foot fir trees was totally organized, almost a work of art. (4) The Arborvitae trimming was fast and flawless. (5) trimming the Boxwood hedge was an unexpected request I made at last minute which was completed without any hesitation. (6) I found a big cart of tree trimmings I did months earlier, and upon my asking they ran these trimmings through the wood chipper at no cost. Summary: PERFECT. And, more than PERFECT. In fact, a perfect, happy day for me. PS: This review should have been my first one on Angie's List. I put if off, and put if off, but felt guilty. So here it is what should have been my first review.
Description of Work: BACKGROUND: During a wind storm on Christmas night of 2009, my neighbor's tree fell and struck my house causing damage to the newly installed roof. I asked for help from neighbor and he seemed to have little or no interest even though he owned a landscaping maintenance business. I was legally responsible for repairs which I was okay with this. Repairs were completed after I paid $1000 in the insurance deduction. Later next year I learned that my landscaper neighbor caused the tree to fall because years before his crew landscaped his backyard and piled & leveled all the removed dirt to his side yard, This resulted in 10 to 12 inches of clay soil placed on top of the root root system of the tree that struck my house. Every single landscaper I have ever queried about piling dirt on top of root systems should NEVER be done because it always kills the tree. Thus this house damage experience became emotional for me. CURRENT SITUATION: There were an additional 8 fir trees, 90 to 100 feet tall, on my neighbor's property. Some of them were in jeopardy of hitting my house. SERVICES PERFORMED: Westside Tree & Land Co provided a quote including (1) assessment of which of the 8 trees needed removal, (2) explanation to my neighbor why they should be removed, (3) detailed explanation of the step-by-step process needed to take down the targeted trees, (4) detailed breakdown of associated costs of removal, and (5) what options were available to choose from (for example, neighbor choose to keep the fallen tree trunks for fire wood). In addition, I needed separately (a) major trimming of a Arborvitae hedge, (b) trimming a 100 foot tall fir tree whose branches were hanging over my house, and (c) trimming a Boxwood hedge which I could no longer trim its height. It was during Westside Tree's quotation that my neighbor agreed to share the costs of taking down the fir trees which were on his property. A major event for me.

Description of Work: The estimator came out to give me an estimate for removal of a large,dead poplar tree.  + -1 moreI met with Mark McArthur a week before the work commenced. He walked our property with me, inspecting each problem tree carefully. We discussed what could or should be done, which trees were worth saving and how extensive the pruning needed to be. He wrote up an estimate which I thought was very reasonable, and we agreed the job would be done on June 13th. He and his crew arrived on time June 13th, and went straight to work. They were very fast and efficient, but also careful not to damage the house in any way. Many of the trees were close to the house, so that caution was important. They were aware of the aesthetics, too. The overgrown apple tree outside our dining room now looks graceful and airy, a vast improvement. Once the cutting and hauling was done, they cleaned up thoroughly. The end result was money well spent. Mark and his crew were a pleasure to deal with.
Description of Work: The trees on our property had not been pruned for over thirty years. Mark McArthur and his crew reshaped and/or topped many of them, enabling us to save most of them. Our yard looks far better and is much safer then before. T

 + -1 moreMark showed up with his crew exactly when he said he would and worked that day till the job was done. It was quite a large job for one day, and I could tell his crew was tired afterward. He also gave me the chips from the chipper to use on my yard. He was always pleasant to deal with and he charged me what he said he would from the estimate. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Took down two large trees. One dying birch and a pine that was in a really tight spot between the house, a fence and a shed. He also ground the stumps.

Mark and his climber quickly surveyed the task and came up with a plan for removal of the trees without damaging any of the surrounding fence, deck/pergola and rock retaining walls as well as keeping the debris out of my neighbor's yard. The method and precision by which Mark and his team removed the trees was impressive. After removal the team did a great job of cleaning up.
Description of Work: Had five large cherry trees removed from the fence line in our back yard with many obstacles that needed to be avoided.

 + -1 moreWe had a 65-70 foot sweet gum tree in our back yard which has been causing us problems for years. Although we appreciated (and will miss) the shade this tree provided our deck and home, we finally reached the point of deciding the tree had to go. I found Mark on Angie's list and noted all the A ratings along with the fact that he is located less than ten miles away. I called him for a quote. I believe my call was made on Thursday and he came at the agreed time on Monday to look at our job and give me a bid.His bid was detailed and, although a bit higher than I had hoped for, was within the range of affordability so we agreed to give Mark the job without delaying to get other bids. We agreed upon a starting date of Monday, April 30. He thought it might take a couple of days to finish. Promptly at 8:35 a.m., Monday morning Mark arrived with his three man crew. They went right to work.The tree was not only very large, it extended somewhat over the wooden fence separating my backyard from that of my neighbors. Mark and his crew needed to avoid dropping debris into the neighbors' yard, to the extent that they could. In addition, we had a relatively flimsy arbor upon which a clematis was climbing. We asked Mark to try to avoid damaging the arbor if possible. The tree was down by 12:30 p.m. Only one small branch dropped into the neighbor's yard. He was fine with that as he too was happy to have me get rid of that tree. The arbor was not damaged at all although one heavy branch did graze it as they swung it down. All in all the job was done perfectly. Very, very professional. The cleanup and chipping of the stump was completed the following day. What little damage to the lawn that was done when the heavy branches and main trunk came down was repaired and all was cleaned up and hauled away as agreed.I'd have them do tree work every time I had any to be done.
Description of Work: Take down a 65-70 foot tall sweet gum tree in our back yard without dropping any debris on the backdoor neighbors' yard and without damaging either our deck or a flimsy trellis upon which a clematis vine is climbing. Haul away all wood and all debris.

 + -1 moreThe experience was great from beginning to end. I called Mark to request that he take a look at a large dogwood tree in my yard that had several dead limbs and peeling bark. He came over the same day and gave me a quote and an appointment to take care of the tree later the same week. I also requested that he trim two Doug Fir trees. One of the limbs was hanging over the roof, allowing squirrels easy access and the other was hanging over the street, hitting taller vehicles that went by. Mark and his crew arrived on time and quickly got to work. He did exactly what he described in our meeting earlier in the week. I couldn't be happier with the work he did on the Dogwood. It is a beautiful old tree and he was able to cut the problem area while leaving the majority of the tree intact. Our fingers are crossed the problem won't spread. If it does, I will certainly call Mark to have the rest of the tree taken down.

They cut up the wood we wanted for firewood and removed all the excess branches. They even returned the fence to it's previous place to help keep our dogs in the yard. They were very open to my ideas and requests in regard to trimming the maple tree. I am very pleased with the look of the maple! They left the yard looking amazingly neat.
Description of Work: In preparation for installing a new fence we needed to remove an oak tree that was straddling the fence line and another tree that was leaning on the current fence. An additional oak tree that was 50% dead needed to be taken down. A large maple tree from my neighbor's yard was overhanging in our yard and needed trimming.

 + -1 moreGood guys and seemed to know their stuff. The only challenge for them is the initial responsiveness when responding to my inquiry. A problem I know only too well so I'm sympathetic to Mark's challenge - responding in a timely manner to inquiries and then following up consistently. It required that I call multiple times but eventually got a commitment and project scheduled. Once they showed up it went as expected and very professional. And as we discussed additional work Mark priced the additional work very reasonably so it was easy to expand the total project. Best wishes for their continued success.
Description of Work: Topped tree in back yard which was the original scope of work. When they arrived we discussed and agreed to have them also remove a few select branches on another tree and removed two scrub trees. A team of four arrived on time and knocked it out in a few hours.

 + -1 moreMark and his crew came as scheduled. They went to work quickly and efficiently. Told me that it might take about an 1 hr and they got done in about 30 minutes. I was surprised how fast they were. I did not spend the extra money to have the stump removed and I'm glad I didn't. We couldn't even see the stump since they cut it so far down. They did such a good job that on three of the trees, it didn't even look like a tree had been there at all. the other two had a little bump from the roots but easily consealed with surrounding dirt. Highly recommend.
Description of Work: I had 5 trees cut down. I Cedar Tree, 2 Atlas Cedar, and 2 Douglas Furs.

He pointed out things we had not noticed and made recommendations based on his professional experience. The work day went smoothly, they came on time and obviously knew what they were doing. They did consult with us a few times during the day. They left your yard and trees in good shape for winter and left no mess behind. The owner gave an estimate for further work to be done on larger trees on the property. He's very down-to-earth to deal with.
Description of Work: Our yard was in need of an over-due pruning and cleanup, both the shrubs and the trees. They pruned shrubs and trees, removed some smaller trees with our approval, and they removed all debris.

Terrain was difficult, sloped with many trees. Highly recommend, would hire again.
Description of Work: Cut down large sugar maple close to house, cut dead portion of trunk off additional sugar maple (15 feet), limbed trees over house - large and medium limbs - at least 5, removed dead limbs in additional trees (3).

 + -1 moreEverything went very well. All was done exactly as per the estimate. They were prompt and left a nice and tidy area after their work was done. There was a day delay in our initial phone called being returned (maybe because they are a small business which is understandable) and they were about 30 minutes late for the estimate, but they were right on time on the day of service and all went very well. We would definitely use them again. We are very happy with the results.
Description of Work: Removed a dead tree. Cut off low branches on four Douglas fir trees. Removed several high dead limbs. Removed all debris.
