I'd never used Mike's before. My electrician of choice was busy on the day I needed the job performed, so I chose Mike's based on Angie's List feedback and proximity to my home. They were very friendly and described in detail over the phone what the job would entail. I had no idea that this was required when re-piping my water supply line. On the day of the job, the two person team arrived promptly at 8:30 when scheduled, and went to work. I recall that it took less than 2 hours, and they did an excellent, clean job. Overall, the price was fair, maybe a little more than expected, but price alone would never influence my decision whether or not to use an electrician again. Quality and service cost $$. I would definitely use Mike's Electric again.
Description of Work: Re-bonded (grounded) my electrical panel and existing copper plumbing system by adding two new ground rods in the earth next to my foundation. This job coincided with a re-piping of my main water supply line from the curb to my home. (The former requires the latter).

Doug came out for proposal. Nicest Guy!! And very confident and experienced. When looking at the kitchen, he pulled out a pen and did some math on the current load running to the refrigerator and insinkerator, and immediately informed me that they're fine and I do not need to spend the money replacing or moving those. Phew! I liked him already! :) Next he checked the mystery switch, which he informed me isn't an actual switch, but was rather set up like a power loop. I can leave it, but cover it up if I like, and it'll be fine and is legal & safe. Finally, he distilled the bid down to just two things I needed to pay for; the new fixture & switch installation, and the new outlet outdoors. The quote came within a couple of days, and was very easy to understand. The first line item was the permit, so that put me at ease as well. Aaron came out for the service. He was a little early to arrive, and took exactly the amount of time that was estimated. He was very nice and polite, and was surprisingly quiet as he went about his business. He didn't even cut the power as he installed everything, so the impact was none! Where he installed the new fixture, he made a cut in the drywall and removed a patch so that he could work. Then he reinserted the patch in the exact fitting it came out of. As a result, my patch on the drywall was easier than I ever imagined!! This was a fantastic bonus as I've never seen this done so well and cleanly. Mike's Electric, and Doug & Aaron, did a GREAT job for me, and I will definitely keep them in my contacts for future electrical work!!
Description of Work: I needed to have advice as to whether or not the current refrigerator plug would work (I had just moved refrig), and whether or not I needed a designated plug for insinkerator. I also wanted to install a new fixture and switch, and an outside plug/outlet with cover. Finally, I had a "mystery switch" which I couldn't figure out what it went to.

We found out about Mike's Electric through Angie's Big Deal. We recently bought a 100 year old house that has knob & tube and thought it would be good to get a detailed electrical inspection. The experience from start to finish was great -- the electrician was punctual, thorough and answered numerous questions. After the inspection, it was more clear what is going on in the house and some short-term and long-term things that should be taken care of. Due to their professional nature, we hired Mike's to come back out and replace some little things that have been bugging us. Again, the service was excellent, on-time and professional. Just what I would expect in a company. We would hire Mike's again.

All went well. Some of the plugs were difficult to reach, but they were careful and thorough, professional and pleasant, providing good information.
Description of Work: Another Angie's List Big Deal - whole house electrical inspection. They were very careful in checking all the outlets, and basically said things were good. They had a suggestion for more GFCI, in the kitchen and extra bathroom, which weren't required when the house was built, but is recommended now. I'll call them to schedule the work later on.

Mike's was great about scheduling, calling to confirm their arrival time and arrived on schedule. Aaron was professional and helpful in troubleshooting the GFCI issue. During the fan installation, it became apparent that pieces of the fan were missing. Aaron had to return on 2/17 to finish the fan install, but we were not charged for travel on the return visit.
Description of Work: Installed ceiling fan, installed new GFCI and determined that a surge protector was tripping GFCI, put garage doors on the line side (GFCI would trip and garage doors would not open)

The best I could ask for. I was alerted to an ongoing problem of fuses being blown. I brought in 3 companies to give bids on the job as I thought it was going to be an expensive one. Mike's was accomodating to my schedule, arrived promptly and gave me more information than I could ask for. The person who was sent knew alot about the 100 year old Victorian building I own. Basicly there were too many space heaters on the same line. Rearranging space heaters fixed the problem. There were other suggestion such as insulation to certain areas and to a referral person who could help us with a zonal heating system. The other 2 companies offered me a bids that were in the $1000's. One said he had to check and rewire the entire fuse box. He said minimally $1500 and would not bid the job out. This did not include the one piece of wiring that did need to be brought up to code. The job would be time and materials and he could not guarantee it would fix the problem. The other company proposed going outside the building, bringing in electricity changing position of meters. Essentialling a very expensive job. On sight the person said in the neighbor hood of $5,000 up to $10,000. I did not return the call when they asked me for my e-mail to send the bid. Neither of these 2 companies looked seriously at the electrical diagram that I had that indicated which plug went to which fuse. Now I understand how rudimentary this was in the diagnosis. By the end of the morning given the proper information I was able to move heaters to fix the fuse problem at no cost. I did bring in Mike's to do the work to bring things up to code. I will bring them in for any other electrical issues I have in the property as well as at home. Thank you Mike's and Angies list for saving me $1000's with a smile. The folks at Mike's are courteous, thorough and articulate. They understand much more than pure electrical. It was only after that visit that I truly understand the problem as well as additional things I can do to help with the heating/cooling system.
Description of Work: Diagnosed electrical problem (blowing fuses) in 100 year old commercial building. The fuse problem turned out to be due to the strain on the electrical system from space heater etc. Additionally one line was needed to be repaired to bring the system up to code.

Donnie arrived on time. Was super nice. Checked my outlets that were not functioning. Found the problem, explained what happened. Recommended replacing two of the outlets with GFI units because they were within six feet of the sink. He accomplished the job in a reasonable amount of time. Then he told me the bill would be mailed to me. I definitely would call on Mike's Electric for future electrical needs.
Description of Work: Donnie diagnosed four outlets that were not working. Replaced two of those outlets with new GFI units because they were near water (kitchen sink). Found one outlet had a flash burn. It was the main reason for the others not working. Replaced and tested all units to make sure they were all working properly before he left.

They came out last Wednesday or Thursday to give me a bid which they provided on Monday. I sent them an e-mail asking when they could start and they called the same day to set up the work on Tuesday. They showed up when they said they would and finished the work within a few hours. I've worked with several of the folks from Mike's Electric and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. They are very professional, knowledgeable and competitively priced. I don't consider anyone else when I need electrical work done; they're the best!
Description of Work: They installed four recessed lights in our master bedroom that previously had no hard-wired lighting. This included making all the outlets always hot and converting the light switch to operate the new lights.

I spent about $250 on the job and the job went great. They were early. They got here in a reasonable amount of time instead of waiting for a couple of days. They were in and out in less than two hours. The electrician who came out was very knowledgeable and professional. He explained everything to me. He cleaned up the areas that he didn?t even make a mess of. He called me ahead of time to inform me that he would come out early. I will use this company in the future.

I called Mikes on a Friday or Saturday, and the electrician came out on Tuesday am. After checking the thermostat, he replaced a worn out breaker, and everything works fine now. There was an error on the billing, but one phone call cleared it up. I have used Mikes before, and have been very happy with their work and prices.

We had ordered a new range from Sears, but the delivery guys couldn't install it because our old range was hard-wired right into the house and the new range required a plug outlet. So Donny had to move the old range away from the wall (and you just *know* what the floor looked like after 25 years of oven use!) and create an outlet. He was cheerful, polite and hey, he was nice to my cat, who drifted over to supervise things. The guys from Sears installed the range today, using the new plug outlet. No problem!

Response from Mike's Electric
Actually the customer was right and it was an oversight from our side . We usually charge for travel time considering the distance from our ofice to the job location, but in this instance the electrician was coming from a totally opposite direction and thus more time for travel. We have sent an apology letter along with a refund check for .25 hour extra time spent to get to the customer's location. Thanks!

Mike's electric spent 2 days doing all my electrical wants and needs. Doug provided the estimate and listened to my wants and needs. He gave me other options for potential requests that would not have been cost effective. Donny was prompt and professional. He took the extra time to make sure everything was just the way I wanted it including making sure things matched with Decora hardware. From my first call to my final payment, everyone was helpful and informative. I will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I had undercounter lights in the kitchen across the kitchen with wires run behind sheetrock and central switch, added gfi outlets throughout (kitchen, bar area, bathrooms and laundry), changed color of switches in kitchen, replaced 4 lighting fixtures in the hallway with recessed, added 2 recessed lights in the family room, added flood lighting added in the backyard, and added outlets in hall and entry.

Called when he learned he would be half hour late; got right to work when he arrived; answered questions during the repair process to enable us to plan should we have another problem; and the problem is solved for now. Two lights that worked intermittently or not at all are now working.
Description of Work: Changed current wiring in three florescent lights to conduit; determined one fixture needed new monuments. The cost seems high to me, but we haven't needed electrical work for many years so did not have a current frame of reference. When I called for an explanation of the cost, they willingly gave me a detailed answer.

Electrician seemed very skilled, friendly, and thorough. Took out the old breaker box, installed the new one and added front porch lights in one day, the power was only out for a few hours. When he came over to do the quote, he hooked up my new stove for me for free! I had thought that I needed to rewire that outlet for the new grounding prong, but he hooked up the thing for me just fine. He made an effort to be friendly to my dog, which I appreciate (she's typically not a big fan of people who come over to do work) even though it has nothing to do with the actual service.

Arrived on time, started on the inside fixture first, and accidently broke the glass dome to the fixture. (Probably because it was an IKEA product and not well made.) No problem, within days they purchased a new replacement and came back to install. Outside problem was quickly diagnosed and fixed as well. I really appreciated their taking care of the mishap so quickly. They were considerate and professional.

The exhaust fan/light combo in our bathroom had stopped working so we had purchased a new replacement unit thinking it was exactly the same. We contacted Mike's to install the new fan unit. The work was scheduled promptly and the electrician arrived on time, was courteous, and professional. However the replacement unit did not fit so the electrician ordered a new fan motor and was back in a few days to make the repair. All worked out very well. We are extremently pleased. Considering the two trips and purchase of the fan motor, the price was very good.

This was the culmination of a protracted, multi-stage project. Mike's was far and away the most helpful in describing and/or explaining what they proposed, and why. They were the only contractor (out of 7 or 8 we talked to) who worked with us to revise their estimate after the project matured. Once we worked out what was to be done, they started promptly, and finished promptly. Their work was neat, and they made minor adjustments on the fly where necessary. The work area was probably cleaner when they left than it had been when they started. The closest thing to a downside is that their estimate was the highest of the contractors who did an itemized estimate. They also had an almost 20% "spread" between upper and lower end of their estimate, and the final cost was about 6% over that. On the other hand, everybody else's estimate was either too vague for comfort, didn't seem to be based on our requests or requirements, or wasn't itemized at all and so high that they could have re-wired the whole house and still made a profit. Despite that, I'd definitely have them back, especially if it was for anything more exotic than a new outlet.
Description of Work: Install sub-panel adjacent to existing service panel; run conduit to patio; install lights, switch, and outlet under patio cover; run conduit into new greenhouse through foundation, install sub-panel with three circuits for heat, lights and general purposes, and room for expansion; install and/or upgrade grounding as required by code
