Dealing with Mike's Electric is proof that working with a contractor doesn't need to be a hassle. Darryl and the other office staff were always knowledgeable, courteous, and professional. Whether communicating via telephone or email, they always took the time to figure out what I wanted and how I wanted the work done. Their electrician, Aaron, showed up on time, was polite, clean, and efficient. Overall, a VERY positive experience.
Description of Work: * whole house surge protection (installed in circuit breaker box) * replace lamps and ballast in kitchen light fixture * rewire and install security timer in hallway

My experience with Mike's Electric was fantastic. Scheduling was hassle free. The electrician and apprentice showed up on time, completed the work in a timely manner, and even cleaned up after. After the electrician explained the fan controls to me all I had to do was turn the fan after they left. They even disposed of my old fan for me. I was so impressed that I hired Mike's Electric to run a new circuit in my retail store. Again, the work was great.
Description of Work: I had a non operable ceiling fan hanging from a vaulted ceiling above a stairway. A very awkward place to work. Mike's Electric replaced the old fan with a new one which required eliminating some old wiring to accommodate the new remote control.

They came on time came in and changed out the light fixture that wasn't working. He had to drill some other holes as this appliance was different than the other one. He filled in where visible with silicon and you cannot tell where the hole overlapped. He did a good job and took away all the packing material. the reason that I put good is because I had asked about getting an estimate on the plethora of fluorescent light fixtures that this hous has and how much it would cost to replace them or just replace the part that goes bad. I have never receive this estimate. He wanted to clean up but I excused him as I wanted to get at that area to steam clean while the furniture was moved.
Description of Work: This particular light fixture is a flexible, monorail track light with three heads on it and it never has worked properly due to poor design by the manufacturer. The halogen lights do not make a continuos contact and the bulbs themselves are very expensive and fragile and have to be handled with a latex glove. I wanted it replaced with another same flex monorail track fixture with better lights that made contact. I used the Angie's list big deal to call on Mike's electric to do the replacement job.

I called Mike's Electric to ask about the coupon they offered for two hours of labor at $99. I needed two outlets installed and was wondering if two hours would be enough. I was told that it would possibly cover it and that any additional time would be $98/hr. I was also told about the permit fee and that I would be paying for parts. I asked how much parts would be and was told that it shouldn't be much for two outlets. Two guys arrived on time and started working right away. Throughout the project I was made aware that the job was turning out to be more difficult than anticipated. The guys worked very hard to get it done and did a good job. The problem came when the bill arrived. I was charged $294 for 3 hours of work and $96 for parts. Three hours of work with my discount should have cost me $197. I called to discuss the bill and spoke with Daryll. He informed me that the extra cost was for the apprentice that assisted on the job. At no point during the initial phone call nor during the 3 hours of work was I ever informed I would be paying for that as well, at an additional $40 per hour. I was also never informed that the added parts needed were going cost almost $100. I was also told that the guys logged 3 hours and 17 minutes work time. Which Daryll quickly bumped up to 3 hours and 30 minutes, an extra 15 for travel time. Another expense I was not informed of. Daryll agreed to remove the added cost of the apprentice hours. He was not apologetic. the conversation was very dry and he seemed uninterested in keeping me as client.

Response from Mike's Electric
We try very hard to understand what the customer wants in their initial call to us. In this case, the customer was very clear that they wanted either one or two outlets "whatever could be done in two hours". We did not see the job before electricians showed up to begin, so it was very difficult to judge how long it would take (or how much it would cost) over the phone. In this case we had to run a significant amount of wire and install a breaker on the electrical panel. Further complicating the work were obstructions inside the wall that made running wire through it very time consuming. The customer told the electricians to proceed knowing that more than two hours would be required and understands the difficulties they encountered, which we appreciate. There doesn't seem to be any dispute that both representatives of Mike's Electric worked diligently and effectively to meet this customer's needs in spite of the difficulties encountered. We did assign an apprentice electrician to this work, which wasn't known when we took the original call. The apprentice in this case was billed out at 1/2 of the journeyman electrician's hourly rate. Had only the journeyman been there, the job would have taken a bit longer and the labor portion much higher (due to the difference between hourly rates between journeymen and apprentices). We should have more effectively communicated this to Member and given her the choice to proceed with, or without the apprentice. We didn't do that and consequently took reponsibility for our oversight by crediting the full amount of the apprentice's time. Essentially, this customer got 7 hours of labor for the cost of 2 1/2. The billing adjustment was made quickly and without argument on our part. If we were less than professional anywhere along the way we apologize. We strive - everyday - to earn the professional accolades that so many Angie's List customers have given us.

The electricians were professional, courteous and careful of my furnishings. They were about 45 minutes late, but did telephone to inform me. I have no complaints about the quality of their work. Also I should note that the cost of $500 does not include an Angie's Big Deal discount of $98, thus taking the cost down to $400. The reason I gave them a B in price is because I think their parts markup is high and their invoice did not include a detail of what parts and how many actual labor hours were being billed. It also included a $50 charge identified only with initials. This charge turned out to be for a permit, but I had to telephone twice to get this information.
Description of Work: The electricians installed wiring and a dimmer switch, plus two sconces in my dining room. They also checked on a non-functioning electrical switch to my fireplace.

We used an Angie's list coupon and they were great about it. Scheduled promptly , arrived on time and were very professional. Two disappointments, 1) the job took twice as long as estimated (1 full day vs 1/2 day) and 2) no one mentioned that I would have to be home again for a city electrical inspection until a call several days later. However Darryl was extremely helpful in trying to get the inspector to commit to a short window of time for arrival so I didn't miss too much work. I think they are a great company and would absolutely use them again

I had a ceiling fan installed in a bedroom. There was an existing light fixture in the room but they had to install a new fan approved box. I was expecting to pay for the extra parts (fan box) but I wasn't expecting to pay for travel time. I guess that is standard for many companies but I just didn't think to add it into the cost of the project. At least they only charged me $15 to go from Beaverton to NE Portland. It took the guy 2 hours and 20 minutes to install the fan. He arrived on time and gave us a call about 20 minutes prior to arrival to let us know to be expecting him. He put down a drop cloth and kept the room very clean and disposed of all trash (even the old light fixture we didn't want).

See above. It went extremely well.
Description of Work: Replaced non-code electrical connection box and added a remote garage light switch. Connection box was very difficult to access and required significant disruption of attic insulation. Job was done quickly and insulation was restored to spec. Remote garage light switch required cutting a hole in lath and plaster wall and snaking wiring from a short distance away. Job was done quickly and the finished switch housing was professionally installed with no exposed lath and plaster damage. They're not cheap, but they are highly reliable, very responsive, first rate professionals.

We bought a coupon for the two hours and they were very punctual. We needed someone to rewire a few outlets and install a plug on a dryer and stove. He ran about 45 minutes over and we got charged for the overage. About $90. So that's why I give the B rating for price, but everything else was great. And I guess it's not his fault he couldn't get all of the work finished in 2 hours. He actually did a lot. I just wasn't expecting the charge to be so much for just 45 minutes. But like I said, everything else was great.

Mike came in, examined the location and looked at the requirments of the new oven. He evaluated the condition of the existing wiring and made suggestions about changes that my husband could do himself if he was comfortable with making those changes. We were delighted with his professionalism and assistance even though we didn't end up hiring him to do the work. I would use his services anytime and now know who to call if we need help.

Aaron showed up right on time and was very pleasant and helpful. He went right to work after we did a walk-through exploring actual and potential issues. He was unable to finish all of the work in one day and returned 2 more times to complete the work. He left everything very clean and even swept the floor before he left. He gave me a couple of options for some of the issues identified and gave me pros and cons of each decision. I will definitely use Mike's Electric again!

Called Mike's Electric and the guy on the phone was super friendly and very courteous. Answered all my questions and set-up the appointment without any hassle. I was concerned about the electrical panel in one of my duplex because the electric range wasn't working properly. Thought I might need to replace the whole thing. Doug from Mike's Electric came out on the appointment day and time. He looked at my panel and found it worked properly. Told me I didn't need to replace the panel and that the breaker was the only thing malfunctioning. He even checked the panel in the other unit for me. He gave me great advice on how to remedy the situation. He wasn't even going to charge me for coming out and looking at the panels. I decided right then and there to have them fix the breaker and do some additional electrical work my wife and I wanted done on our duplex. Doug set-up the appointment and his guy came out the next day and fixed our breaker problem along with the additional electrical work we wanted done. I was very impressed with their honesty, friendliness, and workmanship. I would highly recommend Mike's Electric and will use them again for sure.

After replacing some cabinets and new kitchen counters, we had power feeds from two old flourescent light fixtures remaining, hanging loose under the kitchen cabinets. My first thought was to install puck lighting, and decided I needed a professional to do the work. I found Mike's Electric on Angie's list and gave them a call. Doug Miller talked to me over the phone, and based on his advice we opted to go with a different type of light rather than the puck lights. He sent out several fixture samples so we could compare, and once we'd made our choice, he gave us an estimate and ordered the lights, which arrived quite promptly. Doug sent out one of the staff electricians to do the work. I wasn't present but my wife was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. He arrived on time, and completed the job in short order, and then checked a couple other minor electrical problems that needed attention on the outside of the house. We are delighted with the new lights, and if we ever need electrical repairs in the future, Mike's is the only company I would consider. Special thanks to Doug for all the extra time he spent on the phone giving me advice and then searching out the right fixtures for us. There communications, and customer service were outstanding.

From start to finish it was a pleasure to do business with this company. They came out multiple times to perform work for me and were very accommodating since I have two babies and live across town from where we were having the work done. I really appreciated the work that Mike's Electric did on this job. I had another electrician come out to give a bid on similar work, and I found Mike's to be much more professional and courteous than their competitor. Beyond this, the electrician who came to do the work arrived right when scheduled, finished up all the work in less than the amount of time I was expecting, and addressed all of the concerns that I shared with him. Mike's even went out of their way to clean up after themselves and not leave a mess. I will definitely use Mike's Electric again in the future if I have any electrical service needs.
Description of Work: Mike's Electric changed all of the electric outlets in my house from two-prong to three-prong (grounded) outlets. The outlet boxes in my house were fortunately already grounded, so the job was simply a matter of installing new outlets and grounding them to the boxes. Mike's also installed GFCI outlets in the kitchen, bathroom, and garage. Finally, Mike's installed a GFCI outlet in the one electrical outlet that I had outside and put a water-proof covering over it to bring it up to code.

I think I answered this in the previous box.
Description of Work: Signed up for Angie's List "Whole House Electrical Inspection" at a cost of $99. The day before the inspection, a 15 amp circuit breaker "fried," a GFCI wall outlet failed and I lost some lighting on the main floor and all lighting on the second floor. Tom (the master electrician) and Lall (Tom's master apprentice) of Mike's Electric came to perform the inspection and found themselves doing that AND addressing my big problem. I was simultaneously having my house weatherized, and that job was essentially complete...with 18 inches of insulation blown into all the hard to access places. Tom determined the problem was caused by some sort of short somewhere "out there" in all that wiring. Using his electrical magic, he quickly located the problem, fixed it (with Lall getting into all the hard spots) and was most careful not to make a major mess of my new insulation package in the process. While completing the original "Whole House Electrical Inspection," Tom identified several minor problems (read: code issues) that took little to no effort to fix...and he fixed them (with Lall getting into all the hard spots). He could have listed them in his inspection report and billed me for them if/when he got my call to do the work, but he didn't. Instead, by a small gesture, he earned my appreciation and loyalty, and my committment to take the time to write this report. If/when I have another electrical problem, I will call Mike's Electric and ask for the services of Tom and Lall, and I will do so with the full confidence that skilled and honest professionals are on their way to my home. I'm guessing as to the total price I will be paying. I paid $99 for the inspection, and I'm guessing the unexpected repair work will cost about another $200. If it ends up costing a lot more than that, I'll send in my cancellation of this positive testimonial!

Fabulous. Called at 7:30am, explained what the problem was, quoted a price, and the electrician arrived by 8:05 am. Friendly, professional, and focused on completing the work. Explained what needed to be done, completed it quickly, answered my questions (even about issue that did not directly relate to the work he was doing). Required going up and down ladder many times into a dark rafter area. Explained his work and told me I would be billed for the work. Bill arrived 3 days later for exactly what I expected. Total time of job was 2.5 hours. I could not have asked for a better experience. Mikes and the electrician should give lessons as to how to provide a great customer experience.

In the house working they were really impressive. Doug, and his helper were wonderful to work with and a joy to have in the house. They talked to me about several different aspects of the wiring including a thoughtful discussion on the placement of the new bathroom lights and outlets and as a result I am very happy with the work. The inspection went smoothly and when I walked outside with the inspector to look at the rods inserted in the ground on either side of my gas meter, he said look, they (Mike's) are really about the details. Doug had marked each rod with yellow tape to make them easy to find. Apparently the inspector has had, at times, to dig around in the dirt to find the rods. Doug also ended up repairing faulty work done by the previous owners. Everything is neat, tidy and as it should be. I can even say I love my new panel! Who knew? We now have a separate circuit to each bath in the house-no more blown fuses when we use a blow dryer! I loved this company and will certainly call them if I need something done in the future.
Description of Work: We are remodeling a bathroom and part of the project was to replace all the old galvanized pipes in the house. This meant we needed to have our electrical grounded. Mike's Electric came out and looked at our project and pointed out that our panel was one that is known to have problems. (I double checked on the web and it was true.) Their bid was broken into three cost areas: bathroom, grounding and new panel. We decided to go ahead and have the panel done too. We were quickly scheduled and the team showed up on time. Our project was very nicely handled.
