My old garbage disposal was wired directly and my new one required a regular electrical out let to plug into. I purchased a 2 hour coupon on Angie's List for the work. When I called the time was scheduled the same week at about 2:00 PM on Friday but was told the outlet wouldn't take 2 hours so did I have any other projects to add. I had just checked my smoke detector and it wasn't working so I added that on. I received a call about 1 hour before the appointment that my electrician was tied up on another job that would take all day. I was given the option to reschedule or they would try another electrician later in the day if his job was finished. I preferred the later time and the 2nd electrician showed up very closed the the estimated time. He was courteous, looked at the tasks, got to work and finished both in just over an hour. I am very happy with the communication from Mike's and their ability to make everything work for Friday, my day off work. I'm happy with the work performed, the efficiency of the electrician, the fact the fact the he cleaned up after himself and the price. This was my third time to use Mike's Electric and I've been very happy every time.
Description of Work: They installed an electrical outlet under the kitchen sink for a garbage disposal and replaced an old smoke alarm.

Two electricians showed up on time, phoning in advance to let me know when they would arrive. Both were efficient and courteous. There were no language issues, as both were native speakers of English. The lead electrician examined our circuit panel and replaced the problematic breaker. (No problems since then.) He also found that the two breakers for the washer & dryer were not connected, and advised that we replace them with a connected set of breakers. Apparently the laundry equipment can be damaged under some circumstances if the breakers are not reset simultaneously. He also tested the remaining breakers and wiring behind the panel. One outlet in the garage was not up to code and another was questionable, so they were replaced. They also checked the wiring in the kitchen to make sure that was not the cause of the failed appliances. A few outlets were also replaced there with newer, better ones; GFI outlets were installed as needed. While they were working, I was unpacking a new range hood to replace a combo microwave & fan that had burned out. The electrician noticed that and asked if I knew whether the hood had a plug, since many do not come with them. I was surprised to find that it had just the wires (plug not included), so the electrician offered to wire one up for me. Naturally, he did much better work than I would have done, and it took him just a minute or two to measure the amount of wire needed and wire up the plug. That was very considerate of him to speak up and offer the help, and it definitely saved me another unplanned trip to Home Depot. Overall, I was very happy with the service and am delighted to add my recommendation to what seems like a long list of satisfied customers.

Mike's Electric completed a whole home electric inspection on our new home. They were very thorough and quick. They answered all our questions and explained what needed to be done and why. We asked for an estimate of some items that we wanted to be done and they got the estimate done promptly with reasonable prices. We will definitely use them in the future to complete the items they recommended.

It was a bait and switch. The special we bought was $100 for 2 hours of electric work. We told the guy what we wanted done, but said we only wanted him to perform 2 hours worth of work, so if he didn't finish all the plugs that was fine. He worked for 2 1/2 hours, but said he wouldn't charge us for the 1/2 hour. He also had a helper, but did not mention that the helpers labor was not included. This was in the fine print of the coupon, but they did not mention any of this when we booked the appointment. Needless to say we were very shocked when we got a bill for $440. Apparently this was for the $400 charge for the 2nd helper, plus the $40 in parts. We called and complained and Mike the owner did reduce the bill to $220, but this was still way more than we had wanted to spend. I have no complaints about the quality of service, but just ask that companies be upfront in what they are advertising. It should have been clear on the add that they would be charging us $400 an hour and it was not. Due to this, I would not hire them again.

Nearly 100% of previous purchasers (more than 300) of this coupon have been very satisfied with the value they have received for their investment and we are very respectful of whatever direction they provide prior to beginning work. All purchasers are provided with an e-mail providing additional information about certain aspects of what they might expect when we arrive at their home to begin work - permits, travel time, apprentice labor, etc. We do this because we want to avoid situations like this by having a conversation with buyers beforehand. Member did indicate that he had received the e-mail, but couldn't remember if he had read it. Our electricians proceeded with work after a conversation with the homeowner and believing that they had to authorization to complete the work that was actually done. When the member called us with what appeared to be a misunderstanding over the scope of the work authorized, we removed all excess labor except for one hour of the apprentice's time. This was done without argument and was acceptable to member. For what it is worth, in looking at member's comments and comparing them to his original invoice, there are significant differences: Date of work was 9/26/12 (not 8/10/12), parts were $139 (not $40), original invoice was for $402 (not $440) and final invoice was for $194.00 (not $220). Given this, we're not sure where member came up with a $400/hour labor number. Hourly labor rates for both journeymen and apprentice electricians were included in the e-mail that was provided to him before we arrived at his home.

The Mike's Electric representative came on a coupon from Angie's List. We had the rep estimate two electrical jobs we had on our list. In the end, we only proceeded on one job: replacing an exterior electrical outlet. The rep brought the outlet up to code (plastic cover to protect against rain, I guess) and completed the job in a timely manner. It was a very satisfactory consumer experience.

It was right before Thanksgiving. They were on top of it and so helpful. Instead of being sold the bill of goods on having a complete circuit breaker panel replaced (looking at $1,300.00 approx.), the avoided the temptation to make the big sale and instead fixed what was a relatively simple problem (replacement of a single breaker). I was more than happy on the amount charged on the invoice as well.
Description of Work: They contacted me promptly and set about ordering the older breaker from a separate vendor. The made every accommodation to help me fix the problem quickly and economically. They were true professionals and I will call them with utmost confidence in their quality of service as electricians.

Mike's Tried to Bill for Unauthorized Work: The agreement was for an inspection. Any billable work would have to be authorized by me. I got home from work later that evening and saw an invoice for ~$290! To my surprise, the electrician ran a new outlet from the breaker panel to the refrigerator! The deal was to inspect the outlet, not complete any work. I called in to Mike's Electric and talked with Daryl. Daryl said there must have been a mistake that I was scheduled for a different Angie's List deal. Mine was for the whole home inspection. Mike's Electric mistook it for some other deal as money up front for electrical work. I told him that I did not authorize any billable work. The electrician (probably to cover is a$$) claimed that my wife said it was ok to do the work. My wife said she certainly did NOT authorize the work. Daryl (although he was not onsite doing the work) insisted she did. This behavior is like a scam. A company that comes in and does unauthorized work and bills an excessive amount to the customer. I clearly conveyed my displeasure with Daryl about our circumstance. Over the course of two days I talked with Daryl two more times. I was not willing to pay a total of $390 (remember $100 Angie's List deal) to run a new outlet in the garage and have someone call my wife a liar. I could have done the same work myself for $55 (retail) in materials. They did not run the length of the wire inside the wall, it was on the surface of the drywall including the outlet (fine for the garage). He was willing to waive the labor but he said the materials were $104 and needed me to pay that amount. I said how about we call it even since I already paid $99 for the Angie's List deal. He begrudgingly agreed. In the following days I received a phone call from Daryl. He said that I never did get the whole home inspection and wanted to know if I wanted to get that rescheduled? After a deep quiet breath I responded, "I think I'm good Daryl, no need to reschedule. Have a nice afternoon."
Description of Work: I purchased a whole home electrical inspection. They asked if I had any areas of concern and I indicated that they outlet for our garage fridge was suspect since our freezer was periodically thawing. I replaced our fridge with another I got for cheap of craigslist and it did the same thing. The goof that had owned the house before us did some questionable electrical wiring and this outlet he clearly did himself.

The installer that Mike's Electric sent out was prompt, professional, and incredibly dedicated to doing an excellent job for me. I was in a bit of a hurry to get the job done and was delighted by how responsive they were. I also appreciated that the company allowed me to supply my own exhaust vent fans and gave me some guidance about which size and types would work best. I feel really good about my experience with Mike's Electric and would definitely hire them again and recommend them to others.

I contacted Mike's Electric and described the work that I wanted done. We scheduled a time. The electrician showed up on time. He was a very nice man and did an excellent job. He was well-prepared and had all the tools, etc. that he needed.
Description of Work: Replaced two flood lights that light the patio area. The old ones were looking pretty bad so I bought new ones. Mike's Electric removed the old ones, made sure the wiring was all good, and installed the new light fixtures. I also had them replace the doorbell button by the front door as the old one had quit working.

I took advantage of an Angie's List big deal to get a number of very small electrical projects done at my house. Mike's Electric was able to squeeze me into their schedule for a day I had already planned off from my work. A young electrician came out and took care of everything I requested, and did so in a very efficient and friendly manner. It was a good experience all the way around, and I really appreciated what they did for me. Of course I called them again when I had a circuit out, because they did such a nice job for me the first time. I was amazed that rather than come out (and charge the minimum rates) they first walked me through how to reset the circuit over the phone - for no charge. I notice they have similar guidance posted on their website. They seem to really respect their customers' budgets and time. I will use them again, if the need arises for sure.
Description of Work: Mike's Electric came out and fixed some outlets for me that were worrisome. It was on an Angie's List big deal, which made this kind of small repair work affordable to me.

I was very disappointed. I had a new electrical service installed when I did a remodel last year. All the markings for the breaker box switches were gone. I wanted an electrician to identify which breaker switches did what. I thought it would be an easy process. I had to be heavily involved and I'm disabled. I was left with two yellow notebook sheets with scribbles on them. The guy who came out was borderline rude and did complain about the process.

The first electrician came to our house on 11/9/12 with his apprentice. The apprentice fixed the fan in our downstairs bathroom (just cleaned it), taking about 10 minutes of time, then spent the rest of his time watching the journeyman electrician work in our kitchen. I was initially charged $55 for an hour of the apprentice's time but that charge was reversed when I complained. The journeyman tried to fix our kitchen light fixture (two hanging pendant lights). After about an hour he realized he was missing parts and took a $99/hour trip to the store across town. He came back and realized he was missing more parts and was about to take another $99/hr trip to the store but found out they didn't have the necessary parts so that was not done. My husband had cut some wires on the light, apparently making it hard to fix. The electrician's solution was to wrap the line dangling the pendant light with black electrical tape which was very unsightly. When I called and complained that I had already spent over $300 to fix a light that was now wrapped in electrical tape, the owner sent out another, more experienced electrician to assess the situation. That electrician came up with the idea that we needed to buy some type of sleeve to put over the cord to hide the electrical tape. The owner then sent out a third electrician with the new idea that he would somehow cut then rewire the lights. This actually worked quite well although he left light hanging 3/8 inches lower than the other. I was charged another $200 for that visit. He then came back free of charge to try to even up the lights which are now closer to being even but one is still about 1/4 inch lower than the other. The owner offered to have his man try again to even up the lights, but we've decided to give up. Overall this ended up being an extremely costly experience. Even with our $99 coupon for two hours of electrical work, we spent $575 to have this work done. Very disappointing.

Response from Mike's Electric
We sympathize with the owner and appreciate her taking the time to share her comments. Had we'd known the extent of the problem with the pendant lights, we would have highly recommended replacement, rather than repair. Wires had been cut by member's husband and due to the assembly of lights made repair very difficult. Once we repaired the cut wiring, the lights still didn't work. We did additional troubleshooting and found the transformer had failed. Member authorized repair. These aren't common items and we needed to travel to obtain parts to complete the repair. Once that was complete, one light still was not functioning due to a failed socket. That item had to be specially ordered. Member also requested we replace two dimmers (in addition to the work on the bath fan mentioned in her review). These were older dimmers and not available locally and we were authorized to order them and return to install when received. At that point, she expressed concern over the way we had repaired the wiring and one of our supervisors was sent out (at no cost to member) to look at options. Because of the way the wires had been cut initially, there wasn't anyway to return the lamps to factory specifications. We returned, installed the dimmers abd socket, and used an alternate method to correct the problem with the lamps. However, because the wires had been cut, it was very difficult to get them to match one another in terms of overall length and homeowner asked us to correct. We returned, and adjusted (again, no charge for this work). Member then called and said that they were off by 1/4" and wanted to know what we would do about it. I told her that because of the damage that occurred when the wires were cut initially that we couldn't necessarily commit that we would be able to get them to match exactly. However, I did tell her that we were willing to try, once more, at no charge. Member declined that offer. It's important to note we billed her $476.00 for our work and of that $157.00 was for dimmers, transformer, light socket, and miscellaneous items, leaving only a little over $300 for labor. Given that we had nearly 10 man hours into this repair, it was a painful experience for us as well. Again, we appreciate the member's comments and her demeanor as we worked through this issue.

Arrived on time. Completed work quickly. Were courteous and neat.
Description of Work: Just purchase a new home and had three electrical outlets that kept falling out of the walls. Also had a spa removed from the back yard and had electrical coming up out of the concrete patio that need to be removed. Turns out that the tabs for the electrical boxes in the wall had been cut off, probably when the drywall was cut around it, so there was nothing to screw the electric outlets into. But all this was fixed by Darrell the electrician in a very professional and courteous manner with no mess. Darrell and his assistant Lall - great guys. Thank you.
