The electricians from Mike's showed up right on time and did outstanding work. They were very pleasant and willing to do some additional work for us that was not part of our original work order.
Description of Work: Mike's Electric installed a bathroom ceiling fan, replaced our bathroom lighting and dining room fixture, installed a NEST thermostat, changed a broken smoke detector and swapped out various light switches.

I submitted a request via the company's website and they got in touch with me right away. They were able to give me a good enough estimate over the phone that I decided to hire them. Donny showed up right on time and knew exactly what to do. He didn't waste any time and was done in about an hour. I was surprised to learn that they would bill me. Usually a home repair company will write up the invoice on site, at least for the small jobs I've had done over the years. I admit I was a bit nervous about being billed because I didn't know how much time/labor would be charged. I was pleasantly surprised when I got the bill in the mail because it was less than I expected. Mike's Electric clearly doesn't pad their project time. My job was a small one, but I was treated professionally and with great customer service. I highly recommend this company.

I didn't really look into the details and how they accounted for all the costs. In general, I was satisfied with what Mike's Electric did. They had this weird thing where they say they come with an electrician and then they may or may not come with an apprentice and then you may or may not have to pay for the apprentice. I wasn't quite sure how this all worked. I'm not quite sure I actually paid for the apprentice. I think they did a good job and it wasn't too expensive. They did what they were supposed to do and they could do what they were supposed to do.

The electricians showed up on time. Brad and Brian did a great job. They were courteous and friendly and did good work. They cleaned up well when they had completed the job. They got the job done under the estimated time. Saved me some money. Everyone we talked to on the phone were also very helpful and friendly. I would recommend MIke's Electric to others. Couldn't have gone any better.

He quickly found the electrical problem and fixed it in less than an hour. He then asked if there was anything else I might need - the special was for two hours of work so I mentioned I wanted outlets in the bedroom that would respond to the light switch. He quickly achieved that goal also. He was professional and personable at the same time. Excellent experience - thanks!

Donny arrived on time and completed both tasks meticulously. He asked appropriate questions and cleaned up the areas. This was the third time we've used Mike's, and we've been very pleased each time. There was an error in the bill, but when I called about it, they apologized and sent a revised invoice.

I used an Angie's List Big Deal special offer for this project and I liked Mike. It did cost me a lot extra. He had to go find the electrical outlets he needed to replace, which I understand; but it cost me almost $100 for the parts that he had to get. After he was done everything worked very well but I thought it was kind of expensive for what I thought I was going to get. I guess the price was okay and he did a nice job.

This is not the Mikes Electric that I have used in the past after reading research on Angie's List This is a new owner doing business as Mikes Electric. This is the only negative review I have ever written anywhere. I had a can light in the kitchen that went out intermittently. I went to Angie's list and saw Mikes Electric was still a high rated company. I made an appointment and they came out. The electrician said it probably just needed to have the contact tab bent to make a better contact. I explained I was going out of town for an extended time and was concerned that it could be a fire hazard. He assured me that this would do it. He said all their work was guaranteed so no problem. The next day the light went out again. I called the company and they said they would send someone else out to look at it. I explained I was going out of town for an extended time and again I stated my concern that I wanted to get it fixed before I left. It took them over a week to get back. The new electrician took the light down and said it needed a new part that prevented the light from overheating and that I would have to pay for the new part that was about $20. I felt that was reasonable but explained that I was leaving and that they needed to get the bill to me asap as I was going to be gone for an extended time out of the country. This was the third time I told them this. About a week and a half later I left without getting a bill. When I returned I found two bills from this company for the repair but was charged twice, once for each time they came out. I also got a bill from a collection agency for both times they came out. I called the company to find out what this was about. The new owner said they did not guarantee the work, since the second time it needed a part. He said he was sure I didn't want to pay for his person to just wait to see if it was fixed the first time, and just because they guessed wrong I had to pay for them to come out the second time. I asked why they sent this to a collection company since I explained they didn't get the bill to me before I left, having told them three times I was not going to be here for an extended time. He said the second bill stated I needed to call them within seven days from the receipt of the second bill or it would be sent to collection. I asked what does a guarantee mean to him and in essence it was that they would come out again and fix it but I had to pay for it. He said he would reduce the bill and take off 15 minutes of travel time but that I would have to pay both bills to the collection agency and he would send me a check for the 15 minutes because they would charge him to correct the bill and he didn't want to pay for that. I am still waiting for this check I paid the collection company because I didn't want to waist any more time on this. He never replied to my question about my informing him I was going away and out of contact. So, to sum it up, this is a new owner who bought the name and is not providing the good service of the former owner. Buyer beware.

Response from Mike's Electric
We have worked with member over several years and appreciate his business. The work he references was completed in February and as of 6/15/13 we had not been paid. He received two invoices, we followed up with phone calls, and after zero response, sent him reminder letters. Finally, he responded to us and said he'd been out of the country for 1 1/2 months and our invoices and reminder letters were likely in the pile of mail that had accumulated while he was gone. Assuming he left the country about May 1st, payment from him was already significantly late when he left the country. On our first trip to his home, we made what turned out to be a temporary repair to a recessed light. The light came on immediately after our repair and we assumed the problem had been corrected. As I explained to member, it isn't our practice to look for other possible causes of the problem and run up our bill. We did return a week later and made a second, and permanent repair, to the light. What we offered, and what seemed fair to us, was to remove the travel charge from the second invoice, thereby treating the work as a single occurrence. Member agreed to pay our invoices to the collection agency (since it is out of our hands once we turn the late invoices over to them) and once he had, would call and let us know, and we would send him our check reimbursing him for our travel charge. He hasn't called at this point, but we will go ahead and issue the check since he claims to have paid our invoices in his review. We take exception to the accuracy of some of his comments but respect his option to do so. He is right about the new ownership of Mike's Electric though. We have owned the business now for three years and have accumulated 442 reviews from Angie's List members during that time, with either "A" or "B" ratings from 426 of them. We'll stand on those as testimony to the quality of our work and our efforts to treat all customers fairly and professionally.

Because of the power surge damage in the area, we had to wait approx. 1 week to be scheduled in, however we were able to temporarily redirect/reconnect our cable connection during that time, thanks to a Frontier Cable employee who initially identified the damage in the garage.
Description of Work: Following major area power surge and damage in greater Sherwood/Tigard/Tualatin area in mid-May, we contacted this company to check out a blackened outlet in our garage. Mike's Electric replaced/repaired the damaged line and installed, at our request, a new whole house surge protector for an additional $359 above and beyond the $89 coupon. The coupon included a whole house check of each electrical outlet and Mike's staff found no additional damage in our home. We are very happy with the new whole house surge protector!

It was good. He actually ended up breaking up one of the glasses but they replaced it for us as quickly as they could and that was very nice because stuff breaks and they were very good about that. Then everything worked out just great. I paid an additional amount because it took longer than what the deal indicated and we needed some parts and materials.

Mike's Electric was a great provider. The thing that was most disconcerting was, I bought a special package from him and do I was a little bit surprised when I was charged double than what was advertised because what happened was that he needed to provide a second electrician to hold the ladder. You think that you're buying 2 hours worth of electrician for $99 but you end up paying double because they have to send out two electrician, one to hold the ladder and that was not made clear at all. I kind of felt that was a little bit of a rip off, bait and switch, that's what it felt like. It was just a hassle, a big hassle. They did great work and they ended up because I complained about it so much, they ended up discounting the work, meaning I paid the $99 and then I only paid half of the electrician. I said "I'm not paying a full time electrician for somebody to hold the ladder." I'll never use them again. The people were great and the did great work, it was just the bait and switch of the management.

Overall it was a positive experience. I would highly recommend Mike's and I will use them in the future. There was an apprentice and a journeyman to do the work. They were friendly, punctual, and professional. They worked quickly and breezed through the work in about three hours. After they left something happened where I flipped a switch and the new lights did not come on (although they worked when the work was done) so I called to have them come back. They were back pretty quickly. The only thing that I would suggest is that they use walkie talkies to communicate when they are working on different floors. Sometimes one would say something and the other wouldn't hear. Just an idea. I know that we will have some more work in the future so they will be the first that I call.
Description of Work: They did a variety of work for me. They fixed some outlets that had reverse polarity, changed out some light fixtures, changed out a light switch, disconnected a hot tub, and installed a security light.

We had a string of 12V lighting that was no longer working. Mike's Electric determined that the cause was a failed transformer in the attic that we were able to replace ourselves. We have a 1950's vintage house that included two ceiling lights that had become quite outdated. We provided the replacement lights. Both replacement lights required new supporting brackets. One light was replaced but the second was not because drywall work was required first. They provide new wood framing in the ceiling for the drywall work as part of the installation. We have plans for some additional remodeling and outdoor service. They were able to give us a critique of our current electrical service level as well as some ideas for the new projects. We obtained these services through an Angie's List discount coupon. Nice job. We would select them again.

"Above and Beyond" service from Darryl and Tom! When tenant called with an emergency problem at 5:00 PM on a Friday, service would normally have been scheduled for the following Tuesday. With a family of five that posed a problem and Tom agreed to come out to Hillsboro from Beaverton, after a full day of work, to handle the problem. He was knowledgeable and patient (to both owner and tenant!) in explaining the problem and solution. I discovered Mike's through Angie's List and I'll continue to rely on them. I truly felt I was given valued customer treatment.

Purchased a Angie's List coupon for 2 hours of electrical work for $99. The company called the day before to confirm, and Donny arrived on time. He removed the heaters, capped off the wires and made sure the wiring was safe, cleaned up and even took away the old heaters so I don't have to try to figure out how to dispose of them. He did good work and was polite and professional. He also gave us a rough estimate to install some lighting. Update: A few days after the work was done, I received a bill for $84 -- $32 for materials and $52 for an additional 1/2 hour of labor. I was never told the hourly rate or given the option of having him stop after 2 hours. The last 20 minutes or so was spent cleaning up, which I could have done myself. I assumed that a company offering Angie's coupons is looking for new business and wanting to make a good impression and offer value to prospective customers -- I mistakenly assumed I wouldn't be charged if he went a little over the two hours. I suppose I should have kept track of exactly when he arrived and gone up to him at the two hour mark and asked what it would cost me to have him stay and clean up. So, I'm satisfied with the work that was done, but not too happy about the lack of communication and surprise bill.

I purchased 2 hours of labor on an Angie's list deal. I called and scheduled an appt. for an estimate. They arrived on time for the estimate. I was looking for some professional feedback on some lighting and wiring installation. The electrician that came did not provide too many options on lighting and tried steering me to what I think he was most comfortable with. I was looking to really get some bright lighting and coverage for my garage that only had 2 150W bulbs. I tried running some ideas past him and seeing what other options and coverage might work. He didn't come up with anything other than the basic thought that I had. Estimate: It was broken down into 3 work segments. 1 for the electrical outlets and breakers, 1 for a single light in the back, and 1 for the main lighting area. The overall estimate was way over what I wanted to spend. Maybe I am out of touch with with the pricing for electrical work, but it came it at 2K and I was providing the fixtures. As the main thing that I wanted done was the outlets and I had already purchased the labor that's the only part that I had done. Total cost for this was close to 600. Work: The other thing with either this deal or with Mike's is that they automatically send 2 people out and one of them is an apprentice and you don't have a choice. So you are paying for some training on their end. They arrived over 45 minutes late for the first job of the day with no call to let me know. Overall the work was good quality, but I wouldn't do this again.

We appreciate member's business and his taking the time to review our service. Regarding our estimate for lighting, we based it on the number of fixtures, type and locations requested by member. Our estimates are always a starting point of discussion for the work we are requested to do. We're always happy to take a second look at our estimate to make changes at the member's request. We did not have that opportunity in this case. Two days before the work was scheduled, we sent member an e-mail advising him of several items that could come up in the course of the work, including our use of apprentice electricians. Member does indeed have a choice as to whether we send an apprentice or not. All he would have had to do is to have given us a call to discuss after he received our e-mail. Our records show that member was given an appointment time of 8:15 - 8:30 a.m. and we arrived at 8:45 a.m. We do apologize for any inconvenience caused by arriving 15 minutes after our scheduled time. We recognize that members' time is valuable and we attempt to minimize the impact of any delays.

Very friendly, knowledgeable estimator came out because we weren't sure how much difficulty the lathe & plaster walls in our 1950 home would present. They gave me an estimate in the form of a range, and the final number was on the lower end of the range. Loved that! Turns out the walls were wallboard with plaster finish on them, so the job went quicker than expected. One very professional, courteous, quiet workman did all the work. Completed in 4 hours or so. Neat, easy and everything works beautifully. Thanks, Mike's Electric!
