I had purchased an Angie's List deal for 2 hours of work for $99 but, having no clue how long electrical projects take, had informed Mike's Electric ahead of time that I'd be lining up several projects to make sure I used up the two hours. The two technicians who arrived reviewed my list with me and let me know right away that my projects would likely run over two hours. They asked that I prioritize projects so that, when the two hours elapsed, I could decide whether to stop there or proceed with the remaining items on my list. They were good about checking with me when the time elapsed and I decided to proceed with the remaining projects. Afterwards the lead technician reviewed the additional charges with me to make sure I understood the amount that I would be billed -- an additional $260 (including parts) over my original $99 purchase due to the extended time. I appreciated both technicians' clarity and professionalism and also that of Darryl in the office with whom I originally discussed my projects. I am very happy with all work that was done and will definitely be using Mike's Electric in the future. Highly recommend!
Description of Work: I had new light fixtures installed in the master bath and on the side of the house and a motion-sensor light installed in the backyard. In the kitchen I had a couple of light sockets brought up to code (as previously recommended by my home inspector) and the cord of a hanging light shortened. I also had a suspicious bedroom ceiling light inspected for safety; it was deemed safe and required no repairs.

Description of Work: I called the office on 8/22 regarding one problem I was having with the breaker. No one was available when I called. But next morning Doug from the company called and left me a 2-minute voicemail explaining (in details) what could be causing the problem. What he explained in the voicemail was exactly what was going on. When I called him back he further explained the issues and educated me well. Because of that I did not even have to go through costly inspections. I was very impressed with his customer service despite the fact that the company did not even make any money. They will have a business from me next time when I need to hire a electrician.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review, even though we didn't complete any work for you. Honestly, we'd much rather help a homeowner complete a simple repair over the phone than create a billable situation that can be resolved by one of our electricians in just a few minutes.

I purchased a Big Deal and learned a lot. Big Deals are not so smooth as one would hope, as least in the electrical business. To be fair, Mike's Electric did say up front that they may send two people out, one being a full-fledged electrician and one being an apprentice, but they also said that they possibly would send out just one electrician. What I didn't understand was though the deal listed that I had paid for 2 hours of labor for the price of one hour, the deal only covered the labor of one person, the electrician. So, if you were blessed with two individuals coming out, you were paying up front more than you might have anticipated - you were paying twice for that hour in the Big Deal. Again, to be fair, when I questioned them about this before they came out, they said that two people work faster than one but I was still under the understanding that both would be covered by the deal in that first hour thinking that if I went over, then I would start being charged. Thus, when I was told that they were done and had some time left in the hour, I allowed them to go over without much thought. It would have been helpful to be warned by the electrician in charge that I would be paying for two people not just one. (Mike's Electric said that they would clarify that better in the future.) My exposure to apprentices in the past (albeit in Europe, not the US) was that you did not pay for the apprentice's labor. What a shock I got upon receiving the invoice. I contacted Mike's Electric and explained how I was quite caught off guard. They stood by the fact that I had been warned but I explained to them that it wasn't enough for a novice such as I. They offered to cut the cost of the apprentice by 50%. That was the best I could get so I accepted. I ended up paying $95.00 more than I expected - this amount was above the original cost and materials that they used. Total charge: $471.00, minus the $208 journeyman labor I had purchased through the Big Deal which really cost me $99, so I will add that $99 back into the total =- $362. They then split the $135 apprentice charge with me which brought the total (including the original Big Deal expense) to $294.50. The journeyman did good work - I have no complaints on the quality of work though I think a suggestion that I not use them for what turned out to be such trivial extra jobs would have been helpful. I am truly naïve in the electrical world so when I found out how easy it was to fix the two extra jobs, I would not have bothered asking a highly qualified person to do it for me. My mistake, but a costly one that would have been nice to have been guided on by an expert. My suggestion is to request having only one person sent out to avoid the extra cost of an apprentice, if that matters to you. It is true that two work faster than one but I think that my fan would have been done by one journeyman in the hour that I had paid for quite adequately. This was definitely a learning experience both on Angie's Big Deals and electrical work in the US.

Description of Work: They installed a new outlet for me, checked to see why my breaker box had tripped one of it’s breakers, and I had him take a look at a few mystery switches in my home to see what they were connected to. I had a big deal: FINAL DAY: $99 for 2 Hours of Certified Electrical Work.

All I needed done was to replace a front porch light. I figured that since I was very close to their office they could schedule and complete it expeditiously. Apparently they were booked solid for morning appointments, and scheduled the work for in the afternoon. They then missed two scheduled afternoon appointments due to getting tied up on other jobs, but at least they called to let me know. They finally made it on the third scheduled appointment and completed the installation in less than an hour, also replacing the broken outlet box for the porch light. They were very professional and neat, and did a good job, and did not charge me extra for the outlet box. I would suggest that they could have scheduled this job first thing in the morning, as it only entailed an hour of work and could have been accomplished quickly by an electrician doing it first thing as he went out for the day from the nearby office.

The electricians were prompt, courteous, friendly and very knowledgeable. They were both so thorough and wanted to make sure that they looked at any particular issues I had noticed, plus took the extra effort to climb a ladder into the attic and in the crawl space under my deck (by whole house, they truly mean the entire structure!), spending two hours inspecting everything. They answered all of my questions and walked me through the items that they were going to include on the report. I will receive a written report and estimate for the proposed changes, all broken down so I can prioritize and choose whether or not to pursue them. I will definitely be calling Mike's Electric to do any electrical work I need at my house!

It didn't happen. I got a quote nearly 30 days before I scheduled the work. When I did call to schedule the job, I specifically asked if there was anything that I needed the landscape company that was working on our backyard project to handle. I was told there was nothing, as the post, for example, was included in the bid. Well, in fact, they did require that a trench be dug for the wiring. This was in the written project bid, but it was not verbally told to me when I called and asked pointedly whether any work needed to be done by the landscape company. Not being someone in the detail and who reviewed the written project bid, I was looking for Mike's Electric to advise of what needed to be done. In any event, the guys showed up to do the job. They looked around and found the trench wasn't dug. At this point, professionalism went out the door. I certainly could have read the estimate before they came, but I had checked the box when I called the company to inquire if any work was required. Anyhow, the guys who came to do the job said they would be leaving after showing me the written estimate. There was no desire to work through the issue by these guys. I then proceeded to call the office. This went downhill quickly. I'm the customer. I want my hot tub hooked up. But I'm belittled by these guys for not reading my written project bid. There was no ownership on their end for failing to remind me of the trench when I specifically asked what work was required by my landscape company. In any event, they were more interested in being right than working through a solution. They wanted to be right, me to be wrong. The call ended when I told them I would never call them to do another job at my home. I proceeded to get other bids for the project. And I'm glad that I did. I realized that I was being ripped off by these guys. They have done other projects in our home since we moved to the area from Minnesota in 2012. No more. Their bid was nearly $3,300. The job was done by another company for less than $1,000. I'm not sure how the difference could be justified. It's certainly not because they pride themselves on customer satisfaction or customer service. I had screwed up. But rather than work with me, they simply wanted me to be wrong. Well, as the customer, I'll admit my mistakes, but I'm not going to be put in my place. Hence, they lost the project and I learned that I need to do my homework.
Description of Work: Provided a bid for a hot tub hook-up. This project required running electrical from box in garage to new hot tub pad on far side of home. Wiring was to be run through crawl space of home.

Response from Mike's Electric
Member has been a previous customer of our company and we regret that we were unable to accommodate his request for work. In this case, the issue is the responsibility for providing the trench work for the conduit for his hot tub. As member states, this was clearly excluded from our work as outlined in our estimate. What he does not mention is that this issue was also discussed when he first met with our estimator. At that time our estimator showed him where the trench would need to be located and the depth required. Member told our estimator he would have his “landscaper do it.” Member did in fact call our estimator to schedule the work and asked if there was anything "else" his landscaper should do. Believing we had effectively communicated the trench issue (twice) we replied nothing more was necessary. Obviously, we wish we could have that conversation again, even though we would be restating what we thought was already agreed upon. Our recollection of the events the day worked was scheduled is a little different. Our electricians did not leave immediately. We first tried to work through the problem with the member without placing blame. Our estimator was on the phone with him and he apologized two or three times for any communication problems caused by us. Member insisted that it was our responsibility to tell him any of the written detail contained in our estimate since he went” right to our number” (his comment). Our estimator offered member several solutions, none of which were acceptable to him. Our effort was much more conciliatory than “belittling” as we were certainly trying to reach a reasonable accommodation with a previous customer. We cannot address the difference in our estimate compared to customer’s final cost with another company. When we met with the member, we laid our work out to accommodate his request. Our material cost alone exceeded what he claims to have paid. We’re glad he finished his project at a significant savings, but believe he changed the scope of work to accomplish that. We take exception to his comment that he was being “ripped off”. We do not do that. As a contractor, we believe the projects are successful when communication flows both ways and each party knows what the other is responsible for doing. We strongly agree with member’s comment that “homework needs to be done.” It is our responsibility to understand the scope of the project, and then communicate it effectively, both verbally and in writing. Customers too, need to understand exactly what they are to receive (and do) for the estimated value of the work. We make a diligent effort to be thorough communicators throughout the process as evidenced by dozens of previous Angie’s List testimonials.

After having a full electrical inspection we rec'd an estimate for all the work needing to be done. The estimate was broken out by the type of work to allow for work to be done in parts rather than all at once. We chose to do all the work at once. Mike's team arrived on time, finished the work in less the than originally estimated, and they cleaned up afterward. As the work was being completed we were informed and shown the specifics of the identified problems.

It was pretty bad. They made an appointment with us. After they were two hours late for the first appointment then they called us and said they were gonna be late, so we set up another appointment. When we got the other appointment set up it, the guy complained "Well, this is a two man job." So our 99 bucks we did get nothing out of them, so we weren't real happy. We used them once before and we weren't really happy with them but we thought "Well, give them a second chance," so they proved to be not reliable. They're pretty non responsive. After they were late they called up and said they were stacked up and they didn't call earlier or anything, they started making excuses. We booked this a month before they come, they could have call us and told us anytime and they waited the last minute to complain. The guy couldn't come out and when he did come out he didn't do anything, all he did was complain about it. We didn't get done what we wanted to get done, we ended up putting light fixtures that I could have done myself for 99 bucks. I wasn't real thrilled with him, like I said this was second time around we won't be using them ever again. We got some pretty good work coming up. Were gonna redo the kitchen and stuff so we were looking for good electrical outfit to help us with that and they fell pretty short. We would have probably more stuff, we were fairly certain that the job was gonna take longer that two hours so they would have picked up more money from us. We told them what we wanted to do over the phone. We told them we had to run a wire, that it was gonna be at the attic. When they called "We can't work on the attic, it's too hot" and I'm like "You're telling that us now after you're two hours late?" I wasn't real thrilled. We were kind of disappointed.
Description of Work: They were supposed to install a ceiling fan and that did't get done. Thee guy came out and he basically looked around, complaining about not giving him another guy. There were some questions about where to hook it up, where to run a line and stuff like that. It ended up we didn't get anything out of them. They got a light fixture put in that I could have put in in 15 minutes.

Response from Mike's Electric
We appreciate members' comments and regret that we were unable to complete the work to their satisfaction. As member states, we were requested to install a ceiling fan requiring that wire be run - so they were clear in stating their requirements. The day of the first appointment with member, the electrician's morning job ran long and we called member before we were "late". Member was kind enough to reschedule without complaint, even though we know that can be an inconvenience. Our electrician showed up on time for the second appointment and found that the ceiling fan member had purchased required a grounded system, and after some tracing of wiring, we determined that the circuit they wanted us to tie into was not grounded, making it impossible to locate the fan where they wanted it, without running a new circuit, which they declined to do at the time. We also found improper wiring at a switch box and corrected that, as well as changing the light fixture that member references. There were at least two other issues of improper and unsafe wiring our electrician found and pointed out to member, but that work was declined as well. Again, we are disappointed that we couldn't complete the work to the members' satisfaction, but since they opted not to proceed with the new circuit that was necessary to install their ceiling fan we feel their comments/ratings are unnecessarily harsh. We could have easily done that, and applied members' coupon to that work.

I purchased the 2-hour big deal because I was not comfortable removing the hot tub wire from the electrical panel. I knew it wouldn't take 2 hours so I found some switches that needed to be replaced as well. It was fast work and the showed up on time and did the jobs without any problems. The electrician even explained to me what he was doing for both jobs. he removed all the trash and did the jobs to my complete satisfaction.
