Just a great company all around. It has been a few months since I had this all done, and should have written a review write away since I can no long remember the name of the man that came out - or the exact date of service! They were fast, professional and knowledgable. I actually got some businesses cards to give friends because when they heard I had an electrician coming they all asked me for their information if the company was good. Evidently good electricians are hard to find (?) so I must have lucked out!
Description of Work: I had the company replace 3 outdoor lights, a bathroom fixture and a chandelier, as well as install 2 Belnik remote control switches.

Company cancelled 1 hour before install. Next time they said they could make a new appointment was over a week away. Cancelled appointment after such lousy service, cancelling appointment and then forcing us to wait over a week for the next open slot, is unacceptable.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but as we mentioned to you when the work was scheduled, afternoon appointments such as yours can become challenging if an earlier job goes longer than expected. We do call our customers before our scheduled arrival time - if we know we are going to be unable to keep our appointment time. Angie's List makes it easy to obtain a refund in circumstances such as these, but if you need our help in doing so, please let us know.

They did a thorough job and were professional. The inspection was around $86. They had some recommendations for additional work. They gave me a bid on wireless smoke detectors and their pricing was way too high for the job. They could be the right company for the right customer, a customer interested in high end products. I wouldn’t hire them personally again because their pricing was just too high for what I needed

Thorough inspection of electrical wiring and detailed estimate that was prioritized so work can budgeted for future. Both electricians were very professional and courteous, going out of their way to explain things and even to make a couple of minor adjustments while they were at it, which really helped me out and made me feel 'taken care of'. I definitely would recommend the service and plan to use Mike's for some needed repairs, as well as for some optional work that they recommended. Also, office staff were very pleasant, patient and professional, too.

I expected one electrician for the two hours but instead they sent two electricians for one hour. They did some work on an outdoor electrical outlet. I had no issues with scheduling the appointment. Kurt and his apprentice installed the ceiling fan in the bed room with no problems at all. Efficient and looks and work great. The bathroom exhaust fan was a different matter. The existing fan was no longer available and the hole in the ceiling was bigger than most fans now available. Kurt said he would try to find a replacement fan that you fit the existing exhaust housing. Indeed he did" It took about a week but Kurt came back and installed the fan part in the exhaust housing and the thing works great. He saved us money and time and mess by not having to do sheet rock work on the ceiling. A great job by an innovative and professional.

He was great. They checked out the whole house. They checked to see why it was not working and gave us advice on how to get it working. It is going to take a lot to get it working. They said that they will do it for me and will give me a 10% discount. They were prompt, professional, competent and pleasant. We plan to use them for the project to get it fixed. We just have to wait for a bit. We were really pleased with them. I plan to use them again.

They did a good job on the work but there seemed to be some paint chipped from where they worked on an outlet. Which is understandable but I would have liked them to say something about it. Also they didn't clean up very well after. There was a lot of dust from the bathroom fans on the ground and bits of wire and plastic on the floor from some work on our electric box. Nothing that a small travel vacuum couldn't fix. I also called and asked about a guarantee from a product we purchased and never received a phone call back about it.
Description of Work: They came in and did a whole house evaluation. From that we had multiple things repaired or tuned up.

This is a response to Mike's Electric's response below. What they wrote on Feb. 9 was: " After the coupon is purchased an e-mail is sent to each member providing information on some of the issues that may arise during work - such as the possible need for a permit, how travel time is charged, use of apprentice labor, hourly labor rates after utilization of the coupon, etc." What's interesting to me here is that when I provided the same feedback DIRECTLY to Darryl at Mike's Electric via e-mail, he wrote, on 8/23/12: "I appreciate your comments. We try very hard to avoid unpleasant surprises through timely and effective communication. I?ll revisit ?the fine print? in the Angie?s List Coupon program before we run another promotion and see how we might clarify some of these items." This makes me think that their reply to this review was coming from another attitude and without any acknowledgement that they may be misleading people with the offer, which I have seen continue with NO modifications. This concept of "issues that may arise during work" don't track with the sort of issues I talk about in my initial report. I accepted the 15 min. travel time. They chose to bring an apprentice with them from the get-go, not because the job demanded it. Mike's Electric provided a boilerplate response that did not even address the dialog I encountered with their workers. Consider what Mike's Electric is asking a consumer to accept here. In my opinion, what matters most is how the pitch or offer is worded in the initial advertisement. This is all a buyer has to consider at the time he/she is contemplating purchasing a "deal". There is a higher chance of consumer disappointment if, after pulling the trigger, a business then sends clarifying information that is essentially a hedge, and where the business gives itself permission to give you less service than the initial advertised promised or implied. This would be like going to buy a car, writing a contract, making a payment, and then learning from the dealer before delivering the car that there will be extra expenses involved or that certain advertised features were not going to be included. Sure, it is good that a dealer would notify you of this before delivery, but isn't this more like damage control as opposed to making good on deal that was represented in the first place? There is little excuse for a business not being as transparent and up-front as possible and creating a REALISTIC impression in the first place of what you are providing for what amount of money. The specific facts of my experience, which I took a lot of time to document here, speak for themselves.
Description of Work: The contractor came this morning and finished the job in just under 1.5 hours. They arrived at 8:30 and he was packed up and ready to go at 9:55. They charge for the first 15 minutes of travel time from Beaverton, so he had booked about 1:45 at that point. What was odd is that when he was leaving, Donny said he had only been paid for 1.5 hours of work because he had an apprentice with him, and that he was doing me a favor because he was running a little over that. Meanwhile, from my perspective, I had paid for 2 hours. I explained that from my perspective, considering their travel-time policy, I was due 1:45 of work, and so I could not understand why he felt he had run over. He said, “I had 1.5 hours with my apprentice. If I was here alone, I could not have finished this job in 1.5 hours.” I think what this suggests to me is that when Angie’s List offers “two hours of electrical work for $99,” there needs to be some fine print presented before a customer is in the position of paying for the service. In my way of thinking, two hours of work means just that. Not 1:45 after travel time. Not 1:30 with a junior helper along. All in all, I was happy that the job got done and the work seemed very professional. Consumers, however, are always leery of special offers and “deals” that play out in this way in the sense that expectations are ratcheted down, and seem to be somewhat misleading once all the facts are known.

Response from Mike's Electric
We appreciate member's business and his comments. This work was actually done several months ago. There can be several confusing issues that arise with the purchase of our coupon. The travel charges are clearly spelled out in the "fine print" portion of the coupon. After the coupon is purchased an e-mail is sent to each member providing information on some of the issues that may arise during work - such as the possible need for a permit, how travel time is charged, use of apprentice labor, hourly labor rates after utilization of the coupon, etc. We encourage questions about any of those items prior to the work being begun. We believe in full disclosure. Our records indicate information on both travel charges and apprentice labor was supplied to member prior to work. We certainly regret any confusion that occurred.

Aaron and Jason worked hard and fast on a difficult job, where blown-in insulation covered the old wiring in a cramped attic. They explained what they were up to and why, and they listened carefully to our concerns. The job took all of one day and a couple of hours of the next. They cleaned up great. The same two workers -- a journeyman and an apprentice -- had done the audit, so there were no surprises from start to finish.. Mike's hadn't been able to give us a precise $$ estimate before tearing into the job, so they estimated a range, from $2,100 to $3,200. The final bill, including the audit fee and city permit, came in at $2,109. We got excellent work at a reasonable price.

It was excellent. He went above and beyond what was necessary and we were very impressed. We chose Mike's after receiving several estimates to completely re-wire our home. We also wanted to replace an existing fixture with a ceiling fan, install a new light fixture and outlets in the basement, and install an exterior outlet. Their estimate was competitive and Doug spent nearly 40 minutes explaining to me the work that needed to be done. He estimated 5 days and told us work would be charged on an hourly basis (plus materials), not 'by the job'. My gut told me to go with Mike's and they were able to schedule us quickly. The two electricians they sent arrived promptly each day and worked nearly non-stop throughout the day. They were polite and courteous (I remained home most of the day) and suggested good ideas when questions arose. They cleaned up after each day, patched up the plaster walls where damage from replacing the lighting and outlet boxes occurred, reorganized' the mess of wires, lights, and switches we had in the basement, and installed a motion sensing light to replace a very old exterior light. They ended up finishing in 4 days. We noticed a minor re-wire problem with a light switch after they left and the office scheduled a follow-up appointment for a few days later. The problem was fixed in about 10 minutes. I would highly recommend Mike's and plan to use them for any of our future projects. I appreciated that, for us, the estimate was almost a 'worst case scenario' figure (I realize it could have been worse if other unforeseen issues came up). We were very relieved when the bill came in significantly less.

Thank you for trusting us to work extensively in your home. We're also glad that we were able to complete the work for significantly less than our estimate. Neither homeowner nor contractor benefits when large cost overruns occur so we tend to be conservative in our estimates, but as in your case, we are more than happy to spend whatever time it takes to explain them in detail.
