I called Friday at 4pm, and they were here within an hour and a half. They took care of the problem, and they fixed the issue with the fuse box. He was able to take care of the whole problem, was very courteous, and I was very grateful to get help so quickly. I was so surprised he was able to get out and help at such short notice.

Happy camper. We had a 1950s FPE panel, often considered a fire risk that should be removed from service. Doug did the estimate and identified a high-quality, high-capacity replacement (a Siemens copper-bus panel, maybe overkill for residential, but upgrading to commercial quality is a one-time cost). Due to a clearance technicality, we had to get a variance from the City before the install, and Doug expedited. Professional crew, good workers, good job. Passed City inspection with no issues (even though the City guy, using the variance to train someone, fine-toothed combed it). Glad the overloaded FPE is gone.

I can actually say, "Whoa!" after working with Mike's Electric in Beaverton, Oregon. By my standards I was doing a significant project, installing a kitchenette and other code mandated outlets/switches and service to my newly built office building (200 sq. ft.). When the estimator, Doug, arrived he was so knowledgeable that I am confident he helped me avoid potential problems with permits and inspections. And, he had a great sense of what I was trying to accomplish and how it would be achieved. I did talk to other electricians who made a big deal out of every little detail. Doug definitely had a 'can do' and 'no problem' attitude. When the two electricians, Aaron and Neil, showed up on the appointed date, at the appointed time, they got right to work. My house is a 1947 ranch with lots of quirks, but these two professionals just took everything in stride. When they arrived with a detailed work order, provided by Doug (estimator), .we reviewed the plan. They fully understood the scope of their work and got right to it. I was pleasantly surprised the issues sited by other electricians never seemed to become an issues for Aaron and Neil. I believe they did overcome some challenges without bemoaning the inconvenience. The work they performed was completed efficiently in two days. When I had questions the electricians were positive and gracious without getting chatty and distracted. As a single woman in my mid 60's I have completed hundreds of remodeling projects. I prefer to work with trades professionals who work independently and require limited interaction, that was exactly my experience. It probably goes without saying: "I was very comfortable with these people working in all areas of my home." Great Value, Great Work!

Worker came and installed a dedicated circuit, dimmer, changed couple of fixtures (provided). On 4/9/15 approx. $1,300 was paid for this service. The inspector found the newly installed outlet box sticking out from the wall; it was not properly mounted flush to the wall. The inspector also noted an old pre-existing outlet that was improperly installed some time in the past. When the worker returned he rectified both problems. He said that he left the new outlet box sticking out because he thought the wall behind it was going to be tiled - this was a mistake on his part as this had never been the plan and it had been clearly explained. Even though it was the worker's error, I received a bill for $300 for the second visit.* I sent a check for half that amount to cover fixing the old outlet, and explained should not have to pay entire amount as work had been left undone. But the reason that sparked this review is that, without any discussion, received a letter threatening to ruin my credit if did not pay up remaining $150 within 5 days! Did subsequently pay --not out of concern for my credit -- which is excellent-- but just to "disassociate" from this business. * on second visit electrician brought an apprentice and there was a charge for his time as well!?.

I was quoted $500 to $600 for the work which they thought would take 4 hours. It took an extra hour and I got a bill for twice as much. 5% wasn't taken off my bill for being an Angie's List member either. Owner supplied all materials except for $55 worth of copper romex so the rest of bill was labor and $52 for a permit. Room was also completely empty of all obstacles. Electricians did not use drop cloths on all areas of the floor where they were working and plaster dust got ground into the wood floors. They did vacuum up when done but not very well. I still had to vacuum plaster and wipe down baseboards and swifter afterwards myself. Considering the price tag of an average $220 an hour for 2 guys and the gross negligence in their quoting practices I would not recommend.
Description of Work: Installed 5 outlets and 1 coax line all accessible from 1 room. Owner supplied all materials except copper romex. The work took 5 hours to complete.

First of all, Doug McCauley came out to give me an idea of what my projects were going to cost and if they could be done. I really appreciated his candid assessment of a project that would have cost a lot, helping me decide that it really wasn't necessary. Then he walked me through the process for the other ideas I had. The next day I had an estimate in writing (I was happy with the plan and the cost). I called and they were able to do the work the very next week. We were actually out of town when the work was to be done, and when we returned, the work was done, and we couldn't even tell they had been in the house (except that the work was done). We love the new ceiling fan and would recommend Mike's Electric to anyone needing any type of electrical work.
Description of Work: Installed a ceiling fan in the master bedroom, replaced a defective switch which controlled all the can lights in the kitchen, and replaced the ballast on an under-counter fixture in the kitchen.

We asked for an estimate on some electrical work. Instead the actual worker showed up. While in the house we asked what would it cost for X. He replied, for that you need an estimator to come out. Hmm, that is what we asked for. We still were billed $135 for the time the wrong person came out. Very frustrated.

We appreciate member taking the time to share her comments but wish that her recollection of what actually transpired was clearer. I am the owner of Mike's Electric and I took her original call. Here is the description of the work that was requested verbatim "Doing kitchen remodel. Check panel and advise if circuitry needs to be changed. May have small items to fill out one hour minimum labor charge. NO ESTIMATE WILL BE NEEDED, just a general check." Invoice she was provided (and paid without any previous contact to us) stated "Checked electrical panel as requested by owner and found it to be in good condition and capable of handling planned kitchen remodel." Clearly she was told this would a chargeable call and she authorized our work knowing that.

Because this provider, knowing barely any details about the job, told me I'd have to actually *pay for most of the job before they could tell me what was wrong, my scam alert went off. I then called two other providers who were fine with setting up times to look at the issues and give me bids. Although no work was done (obviously), I just wanted to put this in as a simple warning to others.

We appreciate member's comments, but would like to point out that they are somewhat inaccurate. She called us with two items - a need for grounded outlets and restoring power to outdoor lights and an automatic watering system. No problem setting up an estimate for the grounded outlets. However, customer couldn't provide any information on why she had lost power. In order to provide an estimate to repair, we have to determine the cause of the problem, meaning we would have to send an electrician, not an estimator. We offered to do just the troubleshooting and determination of the problem at our normal hourly rates and once we isolated the problem, prepare an estimate to make the correction, she could then proceed as she wished. Customer was argumentative and not understanding of what we had to do first to provide the estimate she wanted. We certainly take issue with the term "scam". We treat our customers fairly and ethically as our unbroken string of "Super Service Awards" and 56 years in business attest to.

Extremely helpful on the phone, and even rescheduled for me at the last minute when the stove delivery was delayed a week. They were very quick at taking care of the stove. Did a great job putting the exterior porch switch inside. Overall, happy with the work. Was not quite as happy with the price. I think the price was fair, but I had some extra work done and asked them to let me know if they thought I would exceed a certain dollar amount. They didn't say anything so I thought I would still be within that price range. It was actually quite a bit more when I got the final bill. I think the work was worth it, but could have used more information up front.

I utilized a $89 coupon for an electric inspection of my house with a confirmed arrival time of between 10:00 Am - 12:00 PM on April 17, 2015. On April 16, 2015 Mike's called to confirm my appointment at 3:00PM. I advised Mike's that I had an earlier confirmed appointment and could not be available later in the afternoon. Mike said they would get back to me. Mike's called me back and adivised me that I didn't really have the morning appointment, then backed up and said that I did but now needed to move to the afternoon. I am not available in the afternoon so Mike's said they would squeeze me in at 9:00 AM. I confirmed 9:00 AM on April 17th. At 9:15 I called Mikes and was told that they might arrive by 9:45 AM. At this point I cancelled my appointment and requested a refund

We appreciate member's comments and we did have some of the scheduling challenges that she mentioned. Our electrician needed to return to a previous customer's location (from the day before) to do a quick completion, thus delaying his arrival at her home. We gave completing our previous day's work a priority and advised her of such. Sadly, she didn't take it with the same grace and understanding as most other Angie's List customers.

An electrician and an apprentice arrived on time. They did a good job. They had to install it a little off center to attach it to a beam, which makes it more stable. Unfortunately there is now a hole in my ceiling where the light was that I need to have repaired. The whole thing took longer and was more expensive than I expected for a straightforward install.

The light had been flickering for a while. My husband tried replacing the bulb, but then the light went out altogether. We therefore called Mike's Electric, assuming it needed professional attention. Mike's Electric came out and said there was a tab by the light bulb socket that needed adjustment. He did this and replaced the bulb. It took all of ten minutes, but we were charged $162.00! In other words while the labor charges ($32.00) seemed reasonable, the price for making a call ($130.00) did not.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review. Your billing situation seems a bit odd and we'll check it when the office opens next week. We do have a one hour minimum labor charge of $135.00, but if we were there for only 10 minutes it appears you may have been overcharged. If that is the case, we'll certainly send you a check for the difference.

The work was satisfactory. The big issue is that the bill came in way over the estimate, and much of it it was because of charges for apprentice labor, which wound up costing $120 of the $519 bill. Otherwise the time spent on the project was at the high range of the estimate I was quoted. Both the apprentice and the lead electrician spent a lot of time doing research on how to install the sensors on their phones while they were here, for which time we were billed. The experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth, as if they were milking all the hours they could out of the project. I also am not pleased that I had to shell out money to pay an apprentice at that rate; it would almost be better if they would disguise that charge and quote a higher rate for the lead electrician.
