We used Mike's Electric for extensive work when we moved into our house in Fall 2014, so when we needed more work done, we immediately thought of them. We were concerned that they might not be interested in a much smaller job , but they said they appreciate repeat business and work on jobs of all sizes. Aaron, the same electrician who did our original work, came out this time with an apprentice, Alex. They were both friendly and efficient and left no sign that they had been in the house after the work was done. We will continue to use Mike's for all our electrical needs.
Description of Work: Installed a 3-way timer on outdoor lights, replaced a dimmer on a switch to match those in the rest of the house, and added a dimmer to a switch that didn't have one. We had wanted a dimmer on a bathroom fluorescent, but they told us that the type of light we had wouldn't accommodate one. They also checked a motion detector attached to an outdoor spotlight, and after they determined that it didn't work, removed it at our request.

The two men who came to my home were punctual, friendly and professional. It had been raining hard and they were careful to put tarps down so they wouldn't track mud onto my freshly-cleaned carpet. They explained what they were going to do, and then very quickly did the job. I love my new floor outlets and am very happy to no longer worry about people tripping over cords running across the floor to a wall outlet! They also thoroughly checked the gas fireplace wall switches, and verified that there is power running from them to the fireplace. They even did a little checking of the fireplace controls, but did not see anything visibly wrong. So I know now that it is a problem in the fireplace. I will definitely call on Mike's Electric again for any electrical problems in the future.
Description of Work: Installed floor outlets on either side of my sofa; checked the wall switch that controls my gas fireplace, which is not working. A gas fireplace repairman checked it out, and I was told that it was most likely the wall switch..

The provider was not actually able to fix my issue because the parts that needed to be installed were already faulty and needed to be replaced. However, these guys were very punctual, professional, and the bill that I was sent for the service was extremely reasonable. Even though they could not complete the job, they provided me with a reason as to why they could not fix it, and they provided me with a simple solution to fix it myself once I was able to replace the parts. I would definitely use these guys again in the future.

I had Mike's electric do some service in April 2015. While the cost overrun was larger than expected, they seemed to do a good job. So I called them back to do an estimate for wiring a hot tub. (I had actually talked to the electrician about this in April and he thought it would be a fairly easy and straight forward job when I was ready to do it.) Doug M. came out on October 28th. At first he seemed fairly knowledgeable. The project seemed to be much more complicated than the electrician who was here indicated. It also sound outrageously expensive. Though he never said a dollar figure, it was sounding like "twice" the amount of a regular hot tub installation. He did spend a lot of time here, took a lot of measurements and tried to talk about options with me. We were discussing alternatives and I was asking about the large pipe which housed some wire and whether or not we could use that. He asked what it had led to, and I wasn't quite sure. We had removed a pool from the yard and he was convinced that the pipe must have been connected to the pool pump. However, I knew that it wasn't because I had taken the decking off before the pool removal, and Mike's electric had re-routed that wire on their last job here and installed an exterior outlet using that very wire. I was there when they did it, and I dug the d*** trench for it. But even though I told him this, he said that I should probably ask my husband. REALLY? In this day and age someone would suggest that a woman is too dumb to know anything??? I was really insulted - especially since while he was there it was quite obvious that I was in the middle of rebuilding the deck railings and the fence around our property. But I kept my temper in check and thought it might still be worth pursuing getting a quote from them as I was mostly satisfied with the service before and I didn't feel like taking more time off work to get other quotes from other companies. He asked for the specs on the hot tub and warned me that it might be two weeks before he would have time to do a quote. I sent him the specs on the same day. It's now been nearly four weeks and I haven't heard anything. Not one peep - even to say "we're behind - it will be another week or so". Apparently, not am I only a dumb woman who should ask her husband about things that are too complicated for women, but I also am not deserving of any response. This is really the last straw for me with Mike's electric. They had a significant cost overrun the first time, the guy insulted me, and now they don't even bother to provide the quote. I would not recommend them, and especially wouldn't recommend them to women.

As you know, the estimator involved has called and apologized for the comments made, though I can assure you that is not his nature and he feels badly that you found the comments he made offensive. The routing of the wiring for the proposed hot tub was problematic as he explained to you. He was under the impression that you would respond to some of his suggestions and so the estimate was put aside until he heard back. Still, enough time had gone by that we should have followed up. We apologize for not having done so prior to your review.

Great job! We did the Angie's deal for the $89.00 inspection and I must say we were not prepared for the thoroughness of the inspection, and we did not have everything moved we should have...sorry Mikes! Based on that we received an estimate, for everything that was needed to bring our house up to code and safety. We were able to choose what Mike's would do and what we would do ourselves (ie-the simple stuff was ours) . We got a revised estimate immediately and were able to schedule the work. All was completed in 2 days, only about 6 hours without electricity. The bid was done professionally, as well as the work. Courteous and prompt people across the board, which was great because there are 2 little ones here! During the work they found an outside gas leak we were unaware of and notified us immediately. They moved to another area to work until the gas was shut off. They also found another issue which they reported (under the house) as well-what can I say we have an old house. The final price was actually under their initial price. Since the new panel and other changes/corrections they did, our lights appear brighter, the furnace fan is stronger as well. Great job you guys!

The original work done by Mike's electric worked for a few months but then half of the completed job went bad again. They sent out different workers to "trouble shoot" and two months later, the problem is back. They are unwilling to accept that their workers maybe didn't do a great job and that the issue is mine. $850 dollars later.
Description of Work: Mike's electric came to my home to work on an outside electrical issue that was long standing, with worn out materials, etc. Charged a lot of money only to have much of what they did "go bad" again.

She was professional and cooperative in trying to find a solution to this particular problem. She did offer to send an electrician back at no charge if the problem was related to our earlier work. Customer insisted that we arrive at a very specific time which we couldn't commit to. She very abruptly and unprofessionally hung up on us, even as we were trying to accommodate her request. At no time were we "unwilling to accept that our folks didn't do a great job and that the issue was hers". That isn't the way we run our business.

We found Mike's on Angies list. The work they do is excellent. The folks we've dealt with at Mike's have been wonderful - Amanda, Allyson, and the electricians who came out to do the work. They were professional and very thorough. As a matter of fact, we just had the inspection by the City of Portland yesterday and the inspector told us that the first five jobs he inspected he did not sign off on and that ours was the only one that had been done properly! He was happy to see the good quality work and gave us his stamp of approval. We, of course, were very pleased! Thank you Mike's. We will gladly use you for any future jobs we need doing.

They were able to easily restore power to outlet, fixed a broken switch and tried to repair fan. Fan issue not resolved with multiple efforts so they made recommendation about how to contact fan company for trouble shooting and parts. Fan is from company that has patents on all of the parts (I know this from previous discussion with other electrical company when installing same fan). They did not waste my time/money trying to fix something that would require a different resource. They offered to return to repair fan in future after further investigation on my part. They were very professional and efficient.

Firendly, knowledgeable and trustworthy from the start and right through the project. This was a time-sensitive and essential job to replace broken mast with signs of water infiltration and rust into mast and conduit on roof after it was discovered. They performed on-time, slightly under original bid, and with very good savings over competitive bidder. Much higher quality work than expected! The electricians I met on the job could not have been more courteous and professional. Even the inspector who came later to view sub-panels commented on high quality of their work. We received a timely invoice and of course were glad to pay them promptly. This job was contracted for and managed by the HOA for both the main building and the replacement of sub-panels for unit owners. The HOA will most definitely go back to Mike's anytime we have further electrical service needs. Highly recommended!

We appreciate member taking the time to write a review, but frankly his comments make no sense to us. He did purchase an Angie's List coupon for our whole home electrical inspection, but we do not show that any work was performed. His only address on file is in Albany, which is an area we do not serve. From his original request, it appears he was actually looking for us to come to his home (wherever that was) and actually complete repairs. Repairs are specifically excluded from the electrical inspection, which is clearly stated in the coupon detail. It appears he used someone else for this service because it was not us - at least not under the name provided in the review.

I called Mike's Electric to check out a reported electrical problem at a rental. My tenant said that a couple sockets stopped working and that at about the same time the cable to the house was burned. Someone from Mike's came out and reset the GFI and didn't bother to check the underlying reason for the surge. The guy on the phone seemed to thing it had to do with a refrigerator with a bunch of junk piled up around it. When I called to ask why I was charged $135 for "work completed", they told me that they usually tell people to check the GFI outlet before they come out so that they don't have to charge me a minimum for that service. Thanks for that information after the fact. I was informed that they are not cable people, so they can't tell me anything about an electrical surge on a cable line. I won't use them again.
Description of Work: The provider came out and reset my GFI outlet for $135 without checking the reason why it blew in the first place.

Usually we have a conversation with the homeowner regarding such things as checking their circuit breakers and GFCIs. If we didn't in this case, we apologize. GFCIs usually trip due to an overloaded situation and in this case customer led us to believe that the problem was due to a power surge they had experienced. It is not our practice to run up customer's charge by attempting to recreate the fault (which in this case could have doubled or tripled his bill), particularly since customer seemed pretty sure of the cause when he first e-mailed us, and then again when he set the schedule in a subsequent phone conversation. Corrective information for this problem is readily available on our website (see below). It is our third-most visited webpage. Many customers have used this information and call back to let us know how much they appreciate being able to solve such easy problems themselves without having to pay for a service call. Things to try before you call an electrician 06/01/11 OUTLET ISSUES: What if an outlet in the kitchen, bathroom, garage or outdoors isn’t working? All of these areas may be GFCI protected (there is a button on one or more of the outlets that controls other outlets). Push the “RESET” button on the GFCI outlet until you hear a clicking sound. Kitchens may have two or more GFCI outlets. These may control all the outlets in the kitchen. There may be one GFCI outlet located in one of the bathrooms which will control all the outlets in the other bathrooms. Look carefully, the GFCI that controls the circuit that is out may be in a different room.

We had them replace the ceiling fan in the bedroom. They were on time, de-installed the old fan, unpacked the new fan, installed the new fan and rewired the switch boxes. A couple of weeks later the fan started to wobble so had them come back. Again they were punctual and very professional. They checked the fan and determined the electrical box needed to be re-enforced. After fixing that, everything is great--no more problems. Would definitely use them again and highly recommend.

After having some bad luck with recent contractors, it's nice to have a great experience! Everyone I had to deal with at Mike's has been excellent from Darryl (on the phone) to Doug (who provided the initial consultation and in-home estimate). The team they sent out to do the actual work (Brian & Brad) were EXCELLENT. They did exactly what we wanted and left the house totally cleaned up as if they were never there. We had a lot of work done so it involved the team coming out 3 times. We were so happy with Brian and Brad that we requested them for the subsequent 2 appts which involved a slight wait but definitely worth it from our perspective. They are both awesome! I'm not sure why Mike's would have questionable reviews as they are very open to discuss any issues or questions you might have on the costs involved, etc. Doug McCauley was very knowledgeable and provided his input on what we wanted done and the costs involved including directing us in a different direction due to some work being cost prohibitive. Overall an excellent team at Mike's - thanks guys!
