Doug came out with an apprentice and worked several hours. He left the job incomplete, telling me to buy some wire patches and hook up the router myself (I had told him to go ahead and wire it without the patches). The next day I tried to hook it up with the patches and it wouldn't work. He came out again a few days later and discovered that we had "System A" wiring and apparently most wiring today is "system B"--that's why it didn't work. He had to redo the first day's work. The next day my system was down again (5 days down) and I called and he came out but it turned out it was the server this time. Doug initially billed me over $800 for this 2-3 hour job. I told him I would pay for the first day's work (the time it should have taken if he had done the job correctly the first time) plus the last day when I called him and it was the server that was the problem. He was very argumentative about this and has not accepted that as fair.
Description of Work: Hired Doug to do terminations of low voltage wire in the attic and bring the cable down the wall and install a jack for the computer wire.

SOMEHOW WE MISSED THIS REPORT AND THOUGHT TO WRITE OUR SIDE OF THE STORY EVEN IF IT IS LONG OVERDUE. MIKE'S ELECTRIC WAS HIRED TO DO A WIRING JOB THAT HAD BEEN DONE BY OTHERS BUT HAD WALKED AWAY FROM IT INCOMPLETE. THE FORMER CONTRACTOR HAD TEMPORARILY HOOKED UP THE THE MEMBER'S INTERNET SYSTEM IN THE ATTIC: THE WIRES WERE NOT MARKED PROPERLY OR TERMINATED IN AN APPROVED MANNER. AFTER LOOKING AT THE PROJECT, THE MEMBER INFORMED ME THAT TWO OTHER CONTRACTORS HAD TOLD HER THEY WOULD NOT DO THE JOB BECAUSE OF THE MESS THE FIRST CONTRACTOR HAD LEFT BEHIND. WE RE-ROUTED THE WIRES FROM THE ATTIC INTO THE OFFICE WHERE WE INSTALLED A PATCH PANEL FOR HER ROUTER TO CONNECT TO. WE DID NOT HAVE ANY PATCH CORDS WITH US AS WE WERE JUST CALLED OUT ON A SERVICE CALL SAYING SHE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HER ROUTER AND NEEDED IT MOVED INTO HER OFFICE. I ASKED THE MEMBER TO PICK UP SOME PATCH CORDS OVER THE WEEKEND AND SHOWED HER HOW IT WOULD HOOK UP AND TOLD HER IF SHE HAD ANY PROBLEM I WOULD BE OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ON MONDAY. ON MONDAY MORNING SHE CALLED BACK SAYING IT DID NOT WORK. I RETURNED ON MONDAY AFTERNOON AND FOUND THAT THE OFFICE TERMINAL WAS WIRED IN A "B" SYSTEM CONFIGURATION BUT THE REST HAD BEEN WIRED IN AN "A" SYSTEM. ON THE FIRST TRIP I HAD JUST CHECKED THE JACK IN THE OFFICE ASSUMING THE COMPANY THAT HAD WIRED THE HOUSE WOULD BE CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE AND NOT MIXING THE TWO SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS. I RE-DID THE TERMINATIONS AND THE SYSTEM CHECKED OUT. A DAY OR TWO LATER THE MEMBER CALLED AND SAID HER SYSTEM WAS DOWN. I ASKED HER IF SHE HAD CHECKED WITH HER INTERNET PROVIDER TO WHICH SHE SAID YES. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO HER HOUSE AND AFTER DOING TESTING I FOUND THAT IT WAS HER INTERNET PROVIDER THAT HAD A PROBLEM AND WHILE I WAS THERE SHE CALLED THE INTERNET PROVIDER AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THEIR PROBLEM. I BELIEVE WE WENT OUT OF OUR WAY AND CALL OF DUTY TO ACCOMMODATE THE MEMBER'S NEEDS/CONCERNS BUT SHE EXPECTED US TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A JOB STARTED AND ABANDONED IMPROPERLY AND HALFWAY DONE BY OTHERS. WHEN WE WERE DONE, SHE HAD A PROFESSIONAL CLEAN INSTALLATION. A JOB THAT WE COULD STAND BEHIND. AS A SIDE NOTE SHE REFUSED TO PAY FULLY FOR OUR SERVICES AS SHE CONTENDED THAT IT WAS OUR FAULT.

The project went well. Robert showed up on time and was very careful to thoroughly discuss all the details of what we wanted. He also did a good job of communicating the status of his work. He discovered some wiring problems from old circuits and junction boxes, which he corrected. It was not originally planned as part of the project scope, but was necessary to eliminate unsafe electrical wiring. I had to call him to return twice to move wall switches that were in the way after we proceeded with other project tasks. He was extremely responsive and quickly got the additional work done.
Description of Work: We remodeled a kitchen & dining room in an old house. The electrical work included installing new outlets, switches, ceiling lights, under-counter lights, floor outlets, as well as circuits for the dishwasher, stove, and refrigerator.

The electrical box at our recently purchased house built in 1895 was a home handyman special. The previous owner/moron used breakers of many different brands giving us wondrous flickering lights in the basement. The kitchen circuits would trip every time the microwave and anything else was used at the same time. The back porch light no longer worked. Doug, the owner, came promptly and diagnosed the problem. Other electricians told me I would need to replace and move the entire box for approx $5000.00. Doug said it was fine where it was, as long as there was a clearance of 30" to work on the box. He saved us so much money that we didn't need to spend! They applied for the city permit, and everything passed inspection. I will use them again and again! Be sure to get a bid from this guy!! Some electricians out there will take you for a ride!!
Description of Work: Doug inspected all our plugs and the GFCI in the kitchen and inspected the breaker box, you know, electrician stuff! In the end they replaced all the improper breakers with the correct ones. There were many different brands being used by the previous homeowner with very poor connection to the box. Everything works now. They applied for the permit and set up the appointment with the inspector for me.

They came in on the low end of their estimate. I believe Lydia was the name of the electrician who performed the work on my house. She did a great job. She showed up a little late, but called and told me that would be the case. When Doug gave me the original estimate, he said that there might be as many as 3 holes in my ceiling and wall to string the new wire, but when the work was done, there was only one hole! I was very, very pleased with the work. I only wish I would have used this contractor for my original electrical work last year!
Description of Work: I needed a new wire run from a previously moved light fixture to the switch so I could have the original light box removed and seal the hole in the ceiling. I also had a new light fixture hung in my foyer (16 ft. high).

I contacted Mike's Electric largely based on the Angie's List ratings and was quoted a price of $85 and hour. They had an Electrician and an Apprentice Electrician at my house that afternoon (good). Unfortunately, they spent 4 hours pretty much repeating the same diagnostics that I had already done an did not find the problem with electricity in back bedrooms (bad). They recommended back wiring the rooms. I asked for a quote for that work plus the work on several bathroom fans. The quote gave pretty wide ranges but I agreed. We scheduled the back wiring which was performed promptly and fixed the problem. They had to back order new fan motors and I heard nothing...not even an update from them for nearly 2 months. Once the motors arrived they completed the work. The Bill turned out to be at the top of the estimated range and included an overcharge. I contacted them and the overcharged was reversed but it took several calls on my part to get the problem resolved.
Description of Work: Restored electricity to back bedrooms. Installed 3 bathroom fans and a wall heater.

They were very professional. Doug came over to look things over and prepare a written estimate. The service to be provided was spelled out in detail. I knew approximately how long the power would be out. The electrician Robert actually did the work with helpers. He was also careful to explain what he would be doing and about how long it would take him to complete the work that day. I was very impressed that the company did not bill me until the inspection was completed. I had questions throughout this process and made at least 3 phone calls; Doug was always pleasant and willing to answer my questions.
Description of Work: Old electrical panel was replaced plus a few minor items. Once power was disconnected to the house, cables were disconnected from the breakers and each marked with wires; the old panel was removed; the sheet rock and stud were cut to make room for a new panel. New breakers were installed; each breaker was marked. New grounding system was installed. They arranged for a final inspection from the county.

Very capable and pleasant. They were easy to get hold of for scheduling and the work was very satisfactory. Besides, it was a pleasant surprise to work with a female electrician.
Description of Work: We were cutting a new doorway and found a large electrical wire running right through the middle of it. The electrician from Mike's came out as scheduled and after thorough trouble-shooting, discovered it was a dead wire. So she snipped it, tidied the wire up out of the way, put everything back, and just charged for a service call.

Very good experience - work was timely, efficient and professional. They even owned up to a mistake in their original quote (came in 8 breakers too few) and absorbed the extra $200 cost so they wouldn't come in over the original bid. Highly recommend them and their work.

I described the problems caused by the existing garage wiring, described how we wanted it to work and suggested a way the circuits could be changed to do that. Mike's crew of two improved on my suggestions and completed the job satisfactorily in two and a quarter hours.
Description of Work: Changed wiring in garage so that the garage door opener, one external light and a garage wall plug were reconnected to un-switched circuits, and two exterior lights remained on the existing switched circuit. Replaced photocell that turned one external light on and off. Installed new wiring with a switch and a light box in attic above garage for future installation of a light. Rerouted a line to one external light that had been routed through an eave vent screen.

I made numerous calls. Difficult to arrange times for someone to come by to place bid. Night before Doug was to come over a message was left that he was too busy and we'd have to re-schedule. I had already re-arranged schedule to accomodate him. No follow up call. When things start out disorganized. It usually continues that way. So,I went with another company that I was very pleased with. I had had work done with Mike's in the past. That small job had to be re-wired by the company I went with. It was causing an electrical noise in upstairs stereo system.

Response from Mike's Electric
MIKE’S ELECTRIC HAS BEEN SERVING THE GREATER PORTLAND COMMUNITY FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS AND HAS THE REPUTATION OF BEING ONE OF THE MOST PROFESSIONAL, CARING AND RELIABLE ELECTRICAL COMPANIES IN THE AREA AND AS SUCH VERY MUCH IN DEMAND. WE TRY VERY HARD TO ACCOMMODATE ANY KIND OF SCHEDULING AND SERVICE NEED AS BEST AS WE CAN IN THE MOST EXPEDIENT MANNER BUT SOMETIMES THAT MIGHT NOT MEET SOME SPECIFIC NEEDS AND IN THE TIME FRAME THAT THEY NEED IT. WE HAVE A LIST OF OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPANIES THAT WE RECOMMEND TO OUR CALLERS IN CASE THEY NEED IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. WE ALSO MAKE SURE TO LET THE CUSTOMERS KNOW IF WE ARE NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT TO AN APPOINTMENT FOR ANY REASON AS ATTESTED BY THE COMMENT. ONCE THE JOB IS DONE, WE STAND BEHIND THE QUALITY OF OUR WORK AND WILL DO EVERYTHING TO RECTIFY ANY POSSIBLE PROBLEM. WE ARE VERY OPEN TO CRITICISM, BUT NOT UNJUST AND UNSUBSTANTIATED ALLEGATIONS. SINCERELY, DOUG MILLER

I was very pleased with the services provided. They were very punctual, personable, and professional. I would definitely hire them in the future.
Description of Work: We actually had this company out two times. First they came and fixed the wiring in our garage (we just bought our house and it had some home-made scary not-to-code wiring out there.) They were prompt, very helpful and did a great job. The amount we paid was what we expected based on estimate. The second time this company came out it was actually a mistake. I had hired them for help with a problem that ended up being fixed and paid for by the previous home-owner. I had cancelled the job, but somehow they did not note the cancellation. Their representative, Tom, came out. He and the company were very nice and understanding; no charge obviously as no work was done. He did, however, take the time to show me a few problems and things we could consider fixing in the future for the safety of our home. He reminded me that they give free estimates as well. Then he played with our dogs for half an hour. Just a super nice guy.
