This was the second remodeling project that we have had Alex do; both were flawless.
The subcontractors were all really nice, efficient, and pleasant to have in my home. This was especially a big plus because I was so far along and uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable in my own home would have been unbearable.
The only delay in the work was due to the bathtub being chipped. This had nothing to do with Alex and his guys!! They inspected the tub and immediately let us know there was a problem. They even tried to help us have the tub replaced expeditiously.
We would definitely hire Alex and his team again.
However, my husband and I did not hire Alex Freddi because he provided a bid for labor only and it was too difficult for us to determine what the final project would cost nor were we able to compare his bid to other bids. To be fair, he did tell me this when he arrived for the bid interview but we didn't realize that "labor only" meant that all materials, including drywall, etc, would be excluded. If we'd had the time to do the research to obtain costs for all materials - tile, toilet, tub, lighting, construction materials, etc - it may not have been an issue but we don't have that luxury. We need to put that bathroom back together asap. I explained this to Alex when I called to let him know that we had chosen another contractor. He was understanding and wished us well with our project.
If there was a "maybe" choice for "Would you use this company/individual again in the future?", I would have selected it. Under the right circumstances, we would contact him again to bid on another project.
From our first exploratory meeting with Alex, it was clear that he would be easy to communicate with. We had a productive discussion, he listened to us, he thought things through, and he made some insightful recommendations. He demonstrated a perfect balance of being able and willing to offer suggestions and explain the pros and cons, but then always leaving the decision up to the client. These qualities continued throughout the job.
Pretty much everything went smoothly in this project ? which is saying something, because it was fairly complicated: a full kitchen remodel in a small space (in an old house) that posed some constraints and did not allow much room for error. Most of the day-to-day work was done by assistants Mike and Kyle, who were both terrific ? good carpenters and very friendly, professional, and easy to work with. Alex came by frequently, was always available by phone or email, and did not hesitate to get his hands dirty and go to work on something himself when it was needed. Midway through our project Alex suffered a soccer injury that normally confines most people to home for many weeks. Yet he managed a speedy recovery and soon was driving himself to our place and would hobble up to the door on crutches to check in, when we and his crew fully expected he should have been back home in bed! His commitment to his work and his clients really shined through during this time.
One aspect of Alex?s policy that many people will appreciate is that he is willing to leave much of the purchasing of materials up to the client. This means you are not paying him a contractor?s markup on these items. In addition, you save still more money because he allows you to use his contractor?s discount when you purchase the materials. Between these two policies, the client can save many hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. And this actually does NOT mean more time investment for the client. In our previous remodel of other areas of our house, we bought many materials through the contractor for that job, paying a markup, but still had to invest all our time up front to research and select items ? AND then had to deal with the fallout when that contractor made mistakes in ordering. In contrast, with Alex?s approach, you invest little or no extra time, but save much money and gain the peace of mind that you?ll get exactly the items that you want.
With our kitchen project, we had elected at the outset to have the cabinets and countertop installed by a cabinet company. Alex responded very professionally, telling us that this would complicate things slightly and that he would feel better about being responsible for the installation himself, but letting us make the decision and saying that he was open to coordinating with any other contractor. Well, the one aspect of the job where we departed from working with Alex was the one aspect where things went awry. We experienced a number of problems with the cabinet company (covered in a separate Angie?s List report), and this meant that we had to ask Alex for some flexibility as certain stages of his work had to wait for the cabinets and countertop to be completed.
Speaking of flexibility, I?ll say one more thing in praise of Alex and his crew. They were very flexible and accommodating as new things came up during the project. We modified some of our requests, and they made a few discoveries during demo and construction, and in all instances we discussed things and worked out a solution. They were happy to install a beadboard ceiling in the room adjacent to the kitchen, for instance ? something that had not been in the original plan.
In sum, we are very happy with our new kitchen, and we?d give Alex Freddi the highest recommendation possible.
But from the outset, Alex encouraged me to do the job right - to get all new fixtures rather than just a new shower head. To get good tiles rather than the cheap ones from Home Depot I was restricting myself to. When he went to pick up the tub and found out how flimsy it was, he called my attention to it and advised me to get one that would last longer. I am so happy that I listened to every word he said! My bathroom is gorgeous now.
In addition to the craftsmanship, all of Alex's employees were wonderful to work with and around. Polite, friendly, honest, straightforward. They kept in good contact with me either directly or through Alex. I never felt the slightest bit odd about having strangers in my house. And when the job was finished, I hardly had any clean-up to do. Alex's team left the house sparkling. They hauled away all the debris that had collected and a few extra bits as well. It was a 100%, fine, old-school job. Alex is the only contractor I will ever call to do work on my home.
Alex and his crew were always on time and nearly almost always told us when work was going to be done. The one exception was when I came home and the floors had been insulated ahead of schedule. Alex and his subs did an excellent job keeping dust to a minimum thereby keeping the rest of the house livable.
Alex and crew were able to completely tear down and rebuild our "fixer." Alex managed the project through tear down, framing, plumbing, electrical, insulation, drywall and finish. We now have a beautifully renovated home, and didn't break the bank. They are timely and worked with us to get the most for our money. Alex and his team communicate well, are extremely responsive and polite, clean, and most importantly, they gave us confidence to take on this big project with great success. We can't thank Alex Freddi Construction enough!
Great job on sheet rocking the ceiling and matching the rest of the ceiling. Alex and everyone involved were very courteous, extremely responsive and quick to answer questions or resolve any problems. The remodel went smoothly with very good coordination.
It was a lucky day when I found Alex Freddi Construction. I recommend Alex Freddi Construction to anyone seeking a good quality, thoughtful, careful, conscientious team.
