Our sales contract specified that the home would be professionally cleaned, including windows and carpets. The buyers requested that a specific carpet cleaner at a specific company clean the rugs which we agreed to. The home was professionally cleaned by a service hired by our tenants when they vacated a few days earlier. The windows and rugs were professionally cleaned as requested. We had hired an additional professional housekeeper to touch up after the other professionals had left (window and rug cleaner) to make sure that everything was perfect for the new owners. The buyer's agent arrived while this second housekeeper was on site and gave the housekeeper an additional list of things to clean including taking apart and cleaning the inside of the gas fireplace where the valves were located, vacuuming a cobweb that had formed inside a garage window, mopping spots on the floor left by the carpet cleaner, etc. The housekeeper did as requested. That night, after all the documents had been signed by both the buyers and sellers at the title company, the buyer's agent contacted our agent and stated that the buyers wanted some candle sconces included in the sale. The buyers had seen the sconces the first time they viewed the home and had since been removed, since they were our personal property, hung on the wall, much as a piece of art or wall clock. We agreed to give the buyers one set of the sconces but not the second set as they were an anniversary gift. The agent threatened our agent to pull out of the sale and demanded .both pairs of sconces. Our agent was able to find the same sconces online and resolved the issue. Our agent, as well as other agents we know on a personal basis have declared this last minute demand by the buyer's agent the most bizarre and unreasonable action. I would never recommend this agent based on this experience.

Response from John L. Scott Ashland
I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience. I guess you really can't state the agent's name and it is too bad that one person's actions reflect poorly on an entire group of agents. I am wondering when this occurred. The company is under new ownership and is the top selling and listing company in Southern Oregon and I feel as a whole we do a fantastic job. Buying or selling a home is an emotional experience and it is important to keep it a win/win situation for all parties, to have all parties feel good about the outcome and to be sensitive to that. It is a tricky situation when fixtures vs. personal property are evaluated by both parties. For instance, if the sconces are were screwed into the wall they would be fixtures, like bathroom mirrors, if they were hung on a nail like art, they would not be. It is always best to clarify things in writing into the contract. The things that folks focus on at the end of transaction can be odd given the big picture of selling a home. It sounds like the communication wasn't the best. Too bad a pair of candle sconces would ruin your experience of getting your home sold. Wishing you success with all future real estate transactions
