Tiny SMART House, LLC

We were incredibly unhappy with the performance of this company and would not recommend them. We hired them in July of 2012 to build a tiny house. They gave us an anticipated completion date of 6 weeks, but the build took 17 weeks. They gave us the impression at each delay that it would only be a couple more weeks to finish, but this was never the case and we felt deceived. They flipped our floor plan and didn't notify us beforehand (we found out when we drove to the build site to check on construction). They reasoned it was due to a different trailer purchased, but they neglected to tell us in advance and this breached the contract. We hired them to build a house to fit in a specific spot and they took measurements but designed the house in such a way that it wouldn't fit, causing us to lose a parking spot for our home. Because the builders were so behind schedule they ran into a new pay period and they called us asking for an early payment to pay the carpenters, another breach of contract. We felt there was an overall lack of communication through the build process, as they told us they would blog about it and send pictures but we saw little results of this. They didn't confirm designs of certain features (such as the closet) and they didn't send us pictures of the details, doors, cabinetry, etc. When we went to paint the house, we found that they hadn't primed adequately and sawdust covered the exterior. On the day of delivery they were 5 hours late, the house was incomplete, there was debris, bits of wood from other projects, pieces of carpet, and trash inside the house. Sawdust covered everything. It took 9 months and hiring a lawyer to get the title of ownership due to the fact that the builder hadn't completed paperwork on their side through the DMV (a VIN inspection on the trailer or the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin). After moving into the house, we had multiple gas leaks, the sink leaked, the greywater holding tank leaked, the tub was caulked poorly, and there was spray sealant and scuffs that stained the bathroom shower walls. We were not happy with the design of the closet, the reading nook bench, or the porch and awning. One of the biggest problems with the interior was that the walls and flooring were sealed poorly leaving the wood exposed to moisture. We received no compensation aside from apologies and a piece of lawn furniture that doesn't come close to the thousands of dollars and many hours of labor we have put into fixing what we originally hired them to do. We were extremely disappointed with their performance and regret hiring them.
