If you desire timeliness, communication, a streamlined process and professionalism for your project/new home, we would definitely not recommend Richardson Homes. We recently completely remodeled 1350 square feet. First, we were given a completion time of 60 days in our contract provided by Richardson Homes. The project was completed just prior to 7 months. The subs never had to wait on us or work around our schedule (we had one of us at home accommodating them at all times) and it still took this long. We had all our material selections ready prior to the start of our remodel. Secondly, poor communication was a repeated theme from Richardson Homes with us or the subs during the entire process. At times, many days or weeks would pass without any work being performed. When we would complain, we would be told the subs were scheduled to show up and just didn’t or were held up on another job. The subs, who we would often times end up calling to schedule ourselves, would subsequently tell us they were never scheduled. The subs would then ask us when they got to our home, what needed to be done as if we were the general contractors. It was hard to know who to believe, particularly given the owner/general manager told us prior to completion of our remodel that our contractor (who was hired by and worked for Richardson) was a liar and we couldn’t believe him. This touches on the issue of professionalism. We had to do a great deal of the contracting work ourselves which cost us to cut back on our personal work hours. We found that if we wanted anything done, we needed to call the subs ourselves. Many times, the subs would hand us their number and ask us to schedule with them because they acknowledged that the communication was historically poor within the company. We, not Richardson Homes, also had to address with some of the subs the lack of respect they would give our home by leaving their trash behind, cigarettes butts in our driveway and we even caught one of the subs smoking in our house. We, not Richardson Homes researched and found a tile restoration expert (to clean the tile surface damage) after we were told our 1350 square feet of tile may have to be ripped out, because they couldn’t fix the inappropriate and awful-looking floor that their tile sub had laid. After things had already gone from bad to worse, the owner/manager Dennis Lee, got involved and said he wanted to “take care of us”. After this declaration, Dennis Lee would not return calls and e-mails for days up to a week or more at a time. He appeared to have little control over the sub schedules and didn’t know what to tell us. He spoke poorly of his own employees (referenced above) and told us on several occasions how much money he was losing on our project. Dennis Lee did cover the over $4000 worth of the tile restoration needed that his own tile sub couldn’t honor, but it cost us weeks and much stress. We also had to wait extended periods of time for subs to come back and fix their poor workmanship errors. In the end, we were left with several bowed out walls, poor sheetrock seems, a wavy tile floor, sidelights that look as if an elementary student installed them and several small flaws we are now having to fix on our own or will have the next company address for us, just so that we could be officially complete and get Richardson Homes out of our house. Even if remodeling is not Richardson Homes emphasis, we would never recommend them for a new home because of their complete lack of professionalism. Please know we thought we did our research and checked their list of several references, but in hindsight, some of the references provided were individuals Richardson Homes did personal or business work with or were custom homes built by Richardson Homes prior to the company being owned by Dennis Lee. We wrote this review because we do not want anyone to go through a similar miserable experience with Richardson Homes as we unfortunately endured. Consumers beware. This is not acceptable behavior by any company.
Description of Work: Remodeled 1350 sq feet of our 1970's house. This section of our house was remodeled from the floor to ceiling. We received new electrical, new sheetrock/texture/paint, new fixtures, new kitchen cabinets, new countertop, new appliances, new tile floor, new custom wood built-ins, new fireplace, new iron front door, new sidelights, all new trim, had some roofing work, etc. We should have known something wasn't right and the sour course that was to follow, when our demo was very, very slow and not the 3 days we were told it would be. Our demo turned into almost 4 weeks. This was due to our contractor hiring one other worker to help him with the demo, so that the contractor could keep most of the demo money for himself. We signed a contract provided by Richard Homes for 60 days and work was completed just shy of 7 months.
