We just left a google review but once we began reading the reviews on Angi, we noticed that we had a lot in common with Eric K and he posted his review in 2016!!! Our builder was also Shaw Homes and our fence is only a year old and already having issues. Empire Fence Co never put their sign on our fence and now we understand why. They build the cheapest builder-grade fences out there and it shows. Not shocked with all the mixed reviews they have, so I guess you take a chance with having them install a fence for you. There are so many other amazing fence companies out there. I would highly recommend using anyone else!

Empire fence company showed up and put in a privacy fence for my builder in one day. We were not there to oversee the building. By early spring of the next year we started seeing our fence lean and getting wavy. On closer inspection, most of the poles were not cemented in. We had some understanding and simply called to give them a chance to correct the problem. One older man came out and dumped some Quickcrete into three of the holes (about a third of the holes with no concrete). He did not even come to the door. Over the next several years, all the vertical poles and horizontal 2x4s warped badly and the fence sections pulled out of the vertical poles, or the poles rotted at ground level. This was the worst fence job I have ever seen, and Empire did not stand behind their work. We should have expected something when they did not put their sign on the fence indicating it was an "Empire Fence".

Description of Work: Empire tore down some existing chain link and wooden fence and installed metal posts, cedar fencing and two gates. Both the representative and the two installation crews were easy to work with. The work was completed exactly as scheduled.

In 2007 I moved into a newer house. The other neighbors had a wood privacy fences so most of my backyard was fenced in but I needed it finished to keep my dogs in. This was after a major ice storm the winter before and fence companies were busy and most were not willing to do small jobs. Empire was so I waited several weeks for an estimate and several more weeks for an install. Due to the winter issues, I didn't hold that against them. A few years after the gates were installed the gates and fencing they installed started warping; the south gate was the worst. Even with locks on both sides of the gate, it would not stay latched and my 50 pound dog could jump up and the gate would open. So I ended up using 2 ratchet straps to hold the gate shut. Even at that, the bottom of the gate warped so badly my smaller 15 pound dog could still easily slip out. After looking at several of my neighbors fences that were built before mine and realizing they were not having issues, I read up on how to build fences and decided that there were some construction issues and called the company. I had to call several times before anyone would come out. The man that came out was somewhat condescending but he did admit that 1) the crew that did the work had some issues with proper construction techniques but those had been resolved and 2) that they did have some issues with the wood during that time period warping due to government regulations, etc and that I was lucky since they had one customer who bought $10,000 worth of fencing and it warped liked my gate did and had to all be replaced. He said he would write up a quote to replace the fence and he did. $500 quote when I paid $800 initially to have it done correctly. I didn't expect the work do be done free but did expect given his statements that there would be some consideration as to cost. He did 'generously' offer to fix the construction issues on the south gate when they came out to fix the other gate. I know wood fences don't last forever but it should have lasted longer than it did and I know I waited a while to call. So I priced the rail boards and pickets and decided that this fall I could replace that gate with pickets. Fast forward to this past week when I decided to fix the main valve of the sprinkler system so I could use the sprinkler system (I had hit it with a lawn mower several years ago). Everything was working but the area by the north gate started flooding. It appears that when the gate was built, the pipes for the sprinkler system were busted and because they were busted, when they poured the concrete for the post it flowed into the pipes and setup. The sprinkler worked well when I bought the house; it was inspected and tested, and I only stopped using it since I had damaged the main valve mowing that first year and a freeze did more damage. I finally had money to repair it and so this is why there was a delay in discovering this issue. I have pictures of all of this and would upload them if there was a place to do so. I would NOT use this company as I don't feel like they are concerned about the quality of their work.
Description of Work: Installed 2 gates on either side of the house to finish out the wood privacy fence.

1) You may need to call repeatedly to get them to come out and finish the job. They show up on time for the estimate and to start the job. Once they have your fence down and the post holes dug and posts set, they seem to take their own sweet time about coming back and building the rest of the fence. Plan on it taking twice as long as they say it will, and don't be shy about calling them Again, and again. 2) you probably ought to be there when they do the work, to avoid surprises. We got home from work and they had finally returned to put up the fence. What a surprise to discover the picket size did not match the rest of our fence or the neighbor's ( only one side of the fence needed replacing. How silly of us to assume that they would have used the same size picket as those on the fences to which it would attach. 3) if you know anything about wood quality (I don't), you might want to check the material they use. In just over a week, the pickets were bending and warping (there had been no rain and we had not used the sprinkler on that side of the yard). It looks awful and they're now bending/warping so badly, my husband is going to have to nail long boards along the bottom of the fence to keep our neighbor's small dog from squeezing between the warped pickets and getting into our yard (where there are two big dogs).
Description of Work: We received an estimate for building a new fence on one side of our yard. The men who did the work arrived on the scheduled day and were very well-mannered and hard-working. They did a good job with what they had. We don't blame them for the cheap materials, wrong size pickets, and inconsiderate scheduling.

The end results are what we wanted, but I would suggest making sure you are there when they do the work. They showed up a day early on our first hire for them (installing a 6' privacy fence in the back). It looks great, but thank goodness a neighbor called as our dog could have gotten lose since they came early. They also broke some of my yard decor as I hadn't finished removing everything. Our 2nd job to hire them on was a 6' black chain link fence for the front yard. Again, final product looks great, but the installers put in 2 additional gates that led nowhere. And they tried to spraypaint some accessory items although we paid extra for the black coated items. On each and quot;incidentand quot; we called them and their manager came out and made sure it was repaired correctly, including cleaning our vinyl siding as spraypaint got on it. I wish there was a and quot;maybeand quot; to choose on using them again, as I let my husband do the initial interviews so I don't know what my and quot;gut feelingand quot; would be.

One part of the fence is shared between me and my neighbor and so I had to pay just half the price which was $600. Then there were two other sections which I had to pay for from my own pocket and so totally I paid $1200 to $1300. They did a good job. Everything was okay. I wish they had done some kind of weathering on the fence and weather proofing. They said they don't do that. The job turned out good. The fence was fine and it looked great. They did the job very quickly. They took two days to complete the job. They responded very quickly. My neighbor recommended them. I would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Empire Fence for my fence repairs. I last used their services probably in August 2010. They had to replace one whole section of the fence because there was a storm last year and there were two trees in the back yard that fell and damaged the fence.

The process was very slow. The weather was not cooperative and this company appears to be very busy, so every time something had to rescheduled the project slipped further behind. They were consistently 36-48 hours late, although they were pretty good about notifying me that they would be running behind schedule. There was an issue with finding the plot pins. The problem was resolved and Nathan was very helpful, professional, and polite. However, it was yet another delay. Once the crew arrived, the work went quickly and well. Unfortunately, the crew putting in the postholes left the removed dirt, rocks and cement in piles all around the yard. Unavoidable? To be expected? I don't know, but it was a nuisance. When the actual fencing was installed, it looked pretty good and the advise the company provided paid off. I have received some compliments from neighbors and generally the appearance of the fence is O-K. I wish that I could say the fence looked "A+" but, unfortunately, a close look reveals some pretty sloppy workmanship. Doing it fast and just good enough seems to be this company's philosophy. And that would be fine -- if they had been the low bidder. But they weren't. I chose them for their familiarity with neighborhood and friendly, knowledgeable attitude at the time of the estimate. Would I use them again? Maybe. But I'll certainly be evaluating many more companies ahead of them.

Although the side fences were newer, our back fence line was showing sag. We decided to replace it and to have the yard completely enclosed at the same time (our neighbors had fully enclosed back yards, but we'd never installed front fence or gates on either side of our house). I called three fence companies for estimates. I had begun my search in the Yellow Pages, but had checked the three contenders on Better Business Bureau website and Angie's List before contacting them. Empire Fence provided our lowest bid. We were pleased with the professionalism of the person who came to figure the estimate and with the friendliness and expertise of the person who handled our calls to their office. Although it was late March when we contacted them, they were able to schedule the job only a few days out. Exactly one week after the estimate, the installers arrived to tear out the old wooden fence posts and slats and to set new steel posts for the wooden privacy fence, as we had requested. The installers were friendly, but assessed the job quickly and got to work. They set the posts in concrete on a Friday. On Monday, while I was away from home, they returned to complete the fence. My husband and I are pleased with the results and with our overall experience.
Description of Work: Removed the age-worn privacy fence (across the back perimeter of our yard) and replaced it; installed new gates on both sides of house (facing the street).

My old wood fence was about 25 years old and falling down in places. Upon selecting Empire Fence Company, they gave me a start date of a few weeks out. They arrived on the assigned start date and tore down the old fence, hauled it off and set the new fence posts in concrete. They came back in three/four days and finished the job, putting up the railing and pickets. Everything was lined up great. They had to work in some overgrown vegetation, but that didn't effect them. They were friendly to talk to and answered all my questions. They were customer oriented. They did a very good job.
