+ -1 moreIt was great! I was very pleased with him. He did a good job. My patio looks so much better now. I think of anything he could have done to do it better. He followed up with me to make sure everything was to my standards. I asked him for a quote on additional work and I am very pleased with that estimate. Part of the work he suggested I go to someone else who specializes in edging to save some money which I thought was very honest.
Description of Work: After I purchased the Big Deal on the weekend he contacted me on Monday and came out that day. He came on August 16 to do the concrete demolition of my patio. On August 19 he poured the concrete and stamped it.

I was a little worried since I had never used Angie's List before but I read many reviews for the contractor that would be performing the work. I was very impressed. Alex contacted me promptly. He came out at the scheduled time to review what I wanted to do. Alex said he would be out the following week. It rained so I fully expected him to push back the time but he was actually able to come out a day ahead of schedule and finished ahead of schedule. The concrete looks great! I think the price was fair to a little high. It would have been a better deal if I had more concrete poured. But I am still satisfied. I will definitely use Alex in the future.

The work was scheduled to take two days, when it actually took them three days, however this was not a problem for me. I just wanted a good job done and if it took a little long that was fine with me. I was very pleased with the finished product and would recommend Alex.
Description of Work: Alex and his crew broke up an old storage shed concrete pad in my back yard and removed the old concrete. In addition, I had them replace my patio and build a border along the flower bed in my backyard to match the new patio.

+ 1 moreAlex and his crew arrived promptly on the appointed day and got right to work; were very professional and obviously knew exactly what they were doing. They completed most of the tear out on the first day. They returned early the next morning and completed the tear out and built the forms for the new concrete. The concrete truck arrived quickly and they poured both slabs and had them finished and the forms off before leaving for the day. They cleaned up after themselves and left the job site looking neat and tidy. They also replaced the fence that had been removed. We cannot say enough good things about Alex and his crew. They did an outstanding job and we are pleased as punch. We will most definitely recommend Alex to anyone we know needing concrete work. Hooray Alex! PS thanks to Angie's list for helping us find Alex.
Description of Work: Tore out large concrete patio beside a pool and a large parking pad in front of our garage. Also removed a fence that was in the way of the work. Then replaced the concrete with new and put the fence back up.

+ 0 moreUPDATE: After speaking with my husband, Alex offered to let us in on his newest (even better deal) and in addition discount the project even further based on the fact that my father wanted to do some of the demolition beforehand. Truly impressed with his professionalism at this point and beyond ecstatic that we were able to reach an amicable solution. We could not be happier and are anxiously awaiting October when the work begins! When I first emailed Alex from Angie's List he responded very quickly, even though he was on vacation. We then got back in touch a few weeks later and scheduled an estimate. He cancelled the first time at the last minute because a job went over. I don't think it would have been such a big deal to me, except we weren't living at the property at that time and so I drove all the way out there for no reason. The next day though he was punctual and professional. he quickly provided a fair quote for the work to be done and my husband and I told him we would be in contact shortly after we decided. After talking it over we decided we liked Alex and would like to do business with him and his quote seemed fair. My husband got there before me and forgot to mention we were considering him because of the Angie's List deal, so when I emailed him later saying we bought one and we were ready to start work he let me know that since we bought it after the estimate we couldn't use it and should ask for a refund. I guess it was a misunderstanding on my part, but I was really disappointed. We're back to the drawing board and looking into having other contractors do the work.
Description of Work: UPDATE: Had several other contractors come and estimate the work to be done on our home. Afterwards my husband told me he felt like Alex was the right guy and he wanted to call and ask one more time if he would honor the deal even though we purchased it after having him do an estimate. Not only did Alex honor his current (even better deal), but he came back out did another estimate, as we had discovered even more work to be done and then agreed to discount the project even more due to the fact that my father wished to demolish and use some of the existing concrete. We could not be happier, very much looking forward to October when the work commences and we'll have another update then. We saw Alex Construction's concrete deal,so we decided to have him out for an estimate to get a feel for him and see approximately how much the whole project (more than just replacing a concrete drive- placing drainage pipes, etc) would cost and if he could even deal with the drainage issue. After having him out for an estimate we decided we could afford to do the whole project at once and purchased the deal. Then after contacting Alex to set it up, he informed us that by getting an estimate before purchasing the deal we made the deal void, so we could no longer use it and should ask for a refund. I guess it was a misunderstanding on our part... I didn't realize that having an estimate done was "starting" work, if that's the case I probably won't be using any more deals because I won't commit to work with companies that I haven't met yet. We have had terrible experiences doing just that in the past (not on Angie's List, but Groupon/Living Social). Oh well, back to the drawing board.

+ 0 moreTired of walking across the grass to the access the backyard from the outside, especially after rain or heavy dew, Alex ran a sidewalk from the driveway down the side of the house through the back gate ending at the end of back patio. Nothing would grow at the end of the patio and gate area so it was an area of dirt or mud when it rained. The sidewalk looks great and he listened to what I wanted. Part of the sidewalk runs all the way up to the house and the rest has left a nice size bed for a shade garden. I love it! He also extended the back patio from the existing patio about 7 feet. It looks great as well. I am very pleased with the work, responsiveness and just the overall experience of working with Alex.
Description of Work: Responded to one of Angie's Big Deals for concrete work. I purchased the Big Deal to install a sidewalk and extend back patio.

+ 2 moreAlex responded to my call, came out next day to give an estimate and scheduled a date to do the work. A few days before the scheduled date, he called asking if they could come 3 days earlier. (I had asked if he could do the work any sooner and it turned out that he could.) The workers arrived right on time, cut the concrete and fitted the drain and grate into place, washed the patio, and came back the next day to paint it. Later that day a worker removed the debris and Alex returned that evening to inspect the work and to see if I was happy with the project. All this was done very professionally and promptly.
Description of Work: Installed a long patio drain, power washed and stained patio.

+ 1 moreThey removed and replaced the concrete driveway including the concrete approach. Also removed and replaced the back yard concrete patio. They busted out the old cracked concrete, removed the debris and cleaned up the construction site. They hauled in and leveled a sand base for the new foundation, obtained a permit and an on site inspection from the city before pouring the new driveway and patio. All concrete was 3500 PSI, 4 inches high, resting the sand base, reinforced by fiber-mesh mixed in the concret. Control joints were placed every 10 -12 feet for both the driveway and patio with additional control joints for the approach portion of the driveway.
Description of Work: Busted out existing patio and driveway and poured a new concrete driveway and patio. They also demolished and hauled off an old brick barbecue in disrepair that was on the old patio at no cost to me. They reparied somof my sidewalk at no additional cost as well.

+ -1 moreI telephone Alex's Construction and Alex returned my phone call within 30 minutes. Alex came out and gave me an estimate later that day. Alex's estimate came in about the same and lower than our other estimates. We were impressed because he went to the city to talk to them regarding our driveway and informed us that codes had changed and we would have to change somethings with our driveway which added additional cost, but he informed us of this before he started the job. Alex arranged all the permits and inspections. He arrived on time and let us know when we needed to be there. They finished as promised and on time. The porch turned out better than we anticipated.
Description of Work: They removed our entire driveway and part of our porch and replaced it with new concrete.

+ 1 moreAlex and his crew showed up on the agreed upon date, early in the morning. The first day they removed all the old concrete and an old wood deck. The second day they framed up the area for the new concrete. After talking to Alex about former drainage problems we also decided it would be best to install a french drain system around the pool for another $800.00. (Heavy rains would flood the pool with grass and mud.) The next day they poured and stamped half of the concrete. (We had ove 1100 Square feet of concrete poured.) The fourth day we had the rest of the concrete poured and stamped. The 5th day Alex's crew cleaned up the yard of all debris. Everything was finished except for sealing the concrete. Weather prevented them from sealing the concrete on Saturday, and Alex said the would come back the following week and seal the concrete. Saturday evening Alex called and said that they would come that Sunday (Easter), and seal the concrete so I would not have to miss any work the following week. Alex's crew showed up early, (7:15) and began sealing the concrete. We left for Easter activities, but when we returned everything was completed. Alex cam by Tuesday evening for final payment, and I thanked him for such a great job.
Description of Work: Old concrete pool decking and an old wood deck were removed and new concrete was poured, colored and stamped.

Description of Work: Alex Construction added a new driveway that was 11 feet by approximately 72 feet. They were prompt in their completion and were available to complete the job pretty quickly after the estimate was received. Alex and his workers were so fiendly. We would definately use them again.

+ 0 moreAlex is a very nice guy, but the work quality was very poor. The more he tried to fix, the worse the job looked. They poured in the heat of the afternoon rather than the morning and the concrete dried out as they poured. On the retaining wall they used the wrong form thickness and the wall set up wavy as the forms swelled from the weight of the concrete. We had big problems with the stamping at the time of installation, as his crews left shoe prints all over the stain in the deck. Though he worked to stain over, it left blotches that didnt match the color he originally stained with. The saw cut marks were done with a hand held cut saw with no guide and are crooked. His solution was to make the cuts wider which still look aweful with no solution. We had to have the deck re stained and sealed by another contractor at our expense within weeks of installation. The concrete has sinced spider cracked everywhere and will need totally repoured. He has not provided me with his insurance and it looks like he does not have any. An $18,000 job that looks like i did myself..
Description of Work: I had him pour and stamp concrete around my deck and patio, and build a retaining wall for a new home we built.

+ -1 moreShowed up at appointed time. Removed and hauled off old driveway the first day. The second day they poured the concrete and cleaned up and the following morning they remove the boards and final cleanup. They worked hard and did a great job. I am very pleased with job.
Description of Work: Removed old driveway & walkway to porch. Replaced with new and made concrete ramp to porch instead of steps. Also filled in a 2' X 2' area that was removed by ONG to put in new gas meter. They did this at no additional charge.

+ 0 moreAlex and his crew were very friendly and punctual. However, part of the finished driveway had 5, noticeable faults. The last ft from the street up to ft up the driveway had visible faults that were irreparable. Alex admitted that the faults were caused by his crew cutting into the cement while making the final power hose spray which was supposed to remove part of the concrete in order to expose the aggregate stones in the concrete. By the time I discovered the flaws, it was too late. Another visible fault was in the material put in the expansion joint which ran across the entire driveway. Alex tried to correct but it was unsatisfactory. His crew apparently hammered, or somehow forced the material into the expansion joint to the extent that the material was visibly smashed down in several places. Finally the crew did a poor job on cleaning up the surrounding area, I found out that they were supposed to put a sealer all over the driveway and they missed a large section of it. I also found where a part of my gate was bent up where they must have ran a piece of equipment into it.
Description of Work: Alex Construction was to remove the existing driveway and haul it away. Then they were to replace it with a new driveway, with aggregate stone embedded in the cement.

He gave me the best quote by far (200 compared to 500+ for other Angie's list concrete repair companies) and he threw in a 12"x12" cut as well. They came the day they said the would, cleaned up the concrete, did a nice job - I'd recommend these guys with no hesitation at all. No wonder they are an Angie's List Award winner!

+ 1 moreEstimate process went well. Job has yet to be started. Update: Took them 3.5 full days of work. I would have liked a little more or better communication and perhaps even a little more salesmanship to give me confidence that everything would be good and be what i wanted. Everything turned out well and it is exactly what i wanted. The craftsmanship is probably an 8.5 out of 10. There are some imperfections in the concrete and in some of the cuts they made and in some of the stampings. It is nice that they aren't EXTREMELY noticeable and but I do find it frustrating that they did so close to perfect, with just a little more effort and attention to detail, it could have literally been perfect. My final complaint is that they did some concrete clean out and disposal in the woods behind my house, which was fine, just they did it in plain site of the patio when they could have easily done it somewhere less noticeable. I cleaned it up in about 30 minutes time, not a big deal, just not the MOST professional.
Description of Work: I have just hired Alex for the pouring of a new patio and for slightly expanding my driveway. Alex arrived timely for an estimate and has patiently answered all my questions. His price seems fair considering the amount of work and concrete that will be needed. I will update this review once the job is complete. Update: The work was completed. I hadn't heard from Alex for a while, so i finally called him the morning they were scheduled to begin and he confirmed they planned on coming. I would have liked a little confirmation earlier, but they did show up so that's what matters. Alex and his crew poured about 850-900 square feet of colored concrete patio, then they added another color and stamped it. They also added about 200 square feet to my driveway. As for the price, I feel like I certainly made out better with Alex compared to one or two others I considered.
