Pro-Tek Siding & Trim

We have some siding deterioration and had been getting repair/replacement estimates. Sometime in June '12, a young man came to our door representing Pro-Tek and told us that they had a special advertising rebate special for vynal siding installation. Would we be interested in meeting with a sales rep. to hear more. Since we were needed to have new siding, we agreed to meet with a Pro-Tek sales rep. We had not considered vynal siding and thought we could, at least, listen to their presentation. We met with Greg 7/02/12 and he presented their vynal siding product and promotion "gimick".The "incentive" presented was that they had manufacturer advertising money available and would pass some of that on to us in the form of a total cost reduction. Our commitment would be to document, in writing, a "testamonial" regarding their service and product after the job was complete. We would also have to agree to allow them to take "before & after" pictures and allow them to bring prospective customers to our home to see an example of a "finished product".In addition to the vynal siding, they were going to provide new garage doors and new aluminum guttering.Greg did show us several "glowing" testamonials from satisfied customers. We wanted to see examples of their work and we followed Greg to several homes in our area.Unfortunately, we wanted "vertical" siding and the homes we were shown all had "horizontal" siding.Greg assured us that they had examples of "vertical" siding, but he didn't know exactly where they were at. We met again with Greg on 7/06/12 with additional questions/concerns.We followed Grag, again, to a few additional homes in our area. One was an example of "angled" siding (we were considering this look for a couple of selected areas on our house). Another subdivision Greg took us to had experienced a severe hail storm two months earlier (unknown to Greg at the time).Several of the homes with Pro-Tek installed siding had holes in the siding, where hail had punctured it. Obviously, this was a little disturbing and unintended exposure to a negative aspect to vynal siding. Greg called the Pro-Tek owner and Greg told us that all the damaged homes were in the process of being repaired by Pro-Tek. (I came to find out that this was not true). I questioned Greg about the Pro-Tek warrenty for hail damage and he assured me that Pro-Tek would cover the entire cost of replacing hail damaged siding. Actually, there is no "Pro-Tek" warrenty. There is a "manufacturer" warrenty that covers the cost of product only - not labor. I went back to one of the damaged homes (without Greg) and spoke to the owner. They were very gracious. They said that Pro-Tek did an excellent job of installation and were pleased with their installation service. However, Pro-Tek was not repairing the damaged siding. They had to go through their insurance company and chose someone other than Pro-Tek to do the repair work. Pro-Tek would not have provided the labor at no cost to the homeowner. It would have been paid by the insurance company, after paying the deductable. Since we were interested in "vertical" siding, we went to a home (without Greg - he had previously shown us from the street). We spoke to the homeowner and againg they were very gracious and had positive things to say about the Pro-Tek installation. Their "vertical" siding was just small sections of the home, so it was difficult to visualize an entire house. They did have the ceiling of their patio covered with the vertical siding, so we could get a better sense of how that would look. We were not impressed. Bottom line...we were disappointed in the overall apperance of the "vertical" siding and the quality of the trim we had seen. We felt that Greg had misled us regarding the true nature of the warrenty and were a little leary of the vulnerability of the siding to hail damage. I had been unable to get specific detail regarding the garage doors and guttering from Greg, so I was a little suspicious of their quality. We decided (I called Greg 8/14/12) to have our siding repaired/repainted.

At first, the company seemed great. I was told the company had advertising money given to them from the siding manufacture. He said that the plan was to pass on the money on to a couple customers who agreed to let their house be looked at by future potential customers. Sounded fine to me. Estimate was more than any of the other 4 I recieved. His estimate was $7200 for siding and gutters, Next highest one was 5800. I actually got the siding, gutters, and a patio cover built for 7500. The main problem though was the fact that he wouldn't send me the estimate through email nor tell me a price over the phone. That was my first clue that it was going to be high. Next, he didn't show up the first two times he was supposed to return with the estimate. There were too many problems before he even started the work.
