Let me just start out by saying that I really think Don doesn't know the basics of painting. He is argumentative and is prone to slander. I'll get to the slander part at the end of my review. Don looked at the project (an aluminum door installed by Lowes) that I chose to not have factory painted (my first mistake) trying to save $500. The door came with a factory coat of primer. Don gave me an estimate of $100 for just labor, I provide paint. He spoke highly of paint from Home Depot called Behr. I bought Behr paint per his advice. We scheduled the date of February 24. On February 21st I emailed Don; the the day he was scheduled to paint the door it was going to be cold and rainy. His reply email: "I am seeing 51* for Monday which would be fine for painting espically a south wall. That will give it an initial seal coat and we could come back for the second coat another time. If you are not comfortable with that I can reschedule the job for you. My next opening is currently Monday the 10th of March. Please let me know which way you would like me to set it up, including a best time." I thought this was odd because I had asked the Home Depot paint associate if this Behr paint was one coat or two. She said it is one coat exterior paint. Fast forward to March 10. Don and his wife arrive and start to paint. I immediately noticed that they had not sanded the door to which I questioned them about that, he said that you didn't need to sand primer. I've had several people contradict that statement, saying that the surface was very smooth and needed to be lightly sanded in order to have something for the paint to adhere to. So at the finish, I was displeased with the appearance as he had chosen to apply the paint to a smooth surface with a roller which produced an orange peel finish. I questioned him about the orange peel, he argued and said that there was no other way to paint the door, had they used brushes there would have been lines in the paint. I was not happy with the paint, but decided to shrug my shoulders and just accept you get what you pay for. April 21; I noticed that the paint was chipping off where keys had hit the door, so on closer inspection, I was able to just peel the paint off the door in large chunks. I then took my fingernail and scraped the paint off the door. I contacted Don that day (it was raining). He wanted to come out that day (note: it was raining) and look at the door and touch it up. I told him that I would not be there, he insisted and argued that since it was outside I didn't need to be there and that the rain was suppose to let up after noon. I insisted that I do not want workers on my property when I'm not there. So we scheduled for May 20, on May 20 it was raining so I called him and rescheduled it for May 29. They arrived at my property and I showed them the poor paint job, and scraped off the paint with my finger nail as he was trying to tell me that anytime keys hit paint it is going to chip, not so, I've opened a few doors in my life and never was able to peel paint off the door like dried elmer's school glue. Ok, so I told him I wasn't interested in arguing about whether or not paint can be peeled off with a fingernail I told him to leave my property, he asked what he could do to make me happy I asked "can you paint the door where I can't peel it off with my finger nail?" He replied that he probably could but he'd need to go to a local paint shop and see if they can tell him why the paint is peeling off, like is it the quality of the paint, was there oil on the door, things like that. All that said to me was he was looking to lay blame on the paint I bought or the fact that my door had oil on it (in which if that was the case then proper prepping of the door before paint was applied would be have taken care of any oil on the door). I told him to leave and to mail me my $100, he shouted over his shoulder to the AC repair guys who were also at my house fixing my AC coil "Good luck with this lady.". Which I felt was completely inappropriate and slanderous. In summary, no I would never recommend this company, yes I will tell everyone I know about them and when I have my friends come over they will all see the door and ask what happened and I will be glad to share my story, I chose Don and his wife because they are local. I try to support small business owners and definitely those in my community, I was disappointed in his behavior towards me, in his lack of basic paint knowledge, and his poor workman ship that is now proudly on display for all to see. He does not stand behind his work.
Description of Work: Don painted an aluminum framed door both on interior and on exterior.

Response from Repair General Plus
[member name removed] contacted me about installing her new french doors. When I called her back the next day she said she had already signed a contact that morning with Lowe's. She said they told her the door was already primed but she would have to have it painted. She told me she originally thought Lowe's price included painting so she wanted a good price with the promise of other work later if I would help her out. I told her I would paint the inside white and the outside brown. The job should have been at least $300. My first mistake with this job. After we had finished the job she was happy and said it looked good. Two days later she called and said her son had scratched it with a key and wanted to know if I would fix it. I tried to set an appointment and she put me off for two weeks because she was unavailable. On our reschedule date it was misting lightly but it was supposed to stop by ten am. I told her I could come by about three pm and at least look at the door. She told me she would not be home. I told her that since it was on the outside I would just come by and look at it. That was when she got hateful and said “Don't come on my property when I'm not here!” We rescheduled for May 20th and it rained. We rescheduled for May 29th. When we arrived she acted like she was very irritated. We went to the back door and she peeled the paint off that she shows in the picture. I told her that that was very unusual and I have never seen it happen before so I wanted to talk to the people at the paint store to see what might have caused the problem. That was when I thought she might become violent. I assured her I only wanted to help fix the problem and asked her three time what I could do to make this right. This was when she told me to get off of her property and never come back. There were two men working on her air conditioner about 20 feet away. I turned to them and said “I hope you guys have better luck with this lady than I have had.” I know I should not have said any thing and I wish to publicly apologize to [member name removed] for my remark. I was very frustrated that in 14 years as a contractor I have never had any one who was so unreasonable. When I turned to walk away she yelled “You had better send me my $100 or I will see you in small claims court.” I got in my van and drove away. Five minutes later her husband called me screaming and cussing, saying how poor my workmanship was and wanting to know why I was so rude to his wife. So I told him what I have just stated here. His voice calmed down and he said they would have someone else fix the problem.
