I asked for and received bids from two other companies. Concrete contractors were very busy this summer because of heavy spring rains in our area which pushed schedules back. I was impressed with the owner--representatives of both Riley Concrete and Tennyson concrete who submitted bids for our driveway. Their bids were only about $250 apart. The proposals were not quite identical; but I feel confident either company would have been able to provide a good product at a reasonable price I wanted the reassurance of a third bid before I took a contract. One company's estimator couldn't seem to grasp the concept of showing up when he said he would--or he would show up because he was in the area and call to tell us we were not at home (we already knew that). While I was in the process of calling and trying to get another bid from a competent contractor; Davis Cement was actually recommended to me by another constractor who told me they were booked too far ahead to try to make a commitment. Davis was low bidder by $800. Part of that bid difference was due to my agreement to keep the removed dirt and grass. Word of warning: (and I was warned by the contractor) Even a small project like this will generate a couple of two axle dump truck loads of grass and dirt when the area is excavated to provide a proper base for the concrete. I had uses for much of the dirt. It takes a lot of work to knock the dirt out of sod--literally days of work, so be prepared to invest sweat exquity if you choose to save money this way. Davis Cement is based out of Newalla so there may a minimum size project they will be willing to commit for, if the property is located on the far side of the OKC metro area. We are quite pleased with the quality of the work. Mr. Davis is president, owner and a "hands on" master cement worker. He personally supervises and does concrete work, so he may have to return your phone calls; but he will stay in contact and keep you advised of the process while utilities are flagged, and permits--inspections are being obtained. The Davis crew also trimmed the bottoms of my side gates as needed so the bottom of the gate fence boards would have proper clearance above the concrete surface. Additional note: Curb cuts in Oklahoma City must be done by licensed contractors under permit. Be sure the companies understand what you need, so they will be able to tell you if they can perform that work in your city.
Description of Work: Called for underground utility location. Pulled permits for curb cut and side drive installation. Removed grass and dirt. Cut and removed appox 24' of curb, and hauled concrete away. Formed up and had work inspected and approved. Total pour is about 530 square feet.

I should also note that this bid was taken mid-August. Contractors were much busier in early and mid summer because of the wet spring which delayed a lot of work. Davis Cement is based out of Newalla so there may a minimum size project they will be willing to commit for, if the property is located on the far side of the OKC metro area. Melvin, the owner, was very professional and responsive to our needs. He pulled necessary permits and worked around inclimate weather to insure the job was completed in time for the company to erect the building. We were VERY pleased with his crew and the mannor in which the work was preformed. Will definately recommend him to others in the future
