The provider was excellent. Scheduling on less than a week's notice worked, and adding the OTR microwave to the job 3 days ahead of time was no problem. Very satisfied.
Description of Work: Installed an OTR microwave and re-caulked an old tub.

REPLACED ONE SQUARE FOOT OF BURNED PAD ONLY PER CUSTOMER'S REQUEST. THIS CUSTOMER WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PLEASE, EVEN THOUGH I DID MANY EXTRA THINGS FOR HER AT NO CHARGE. HER HOUSE & DECK ARE LITERALLY FALLING APART DUE TO NEARLY 20 YEARS OF NEGLECT & SHE WANTED TO BLAME ME. THE HOUSE SITS ON A 25% DECLINE, AND MOTHER NATURE IS PUSHING THE HOUSE DOWNWARD, CAUSING THE DECK TO BE PUSHED DOWNHILL. WHEN I ADVISED CUSTOMER HER HOME WOULD NEED MORE WORK, SHE STARTED CALLING ME NAMES & BECOMING VERY DRAMATIC. THE PAINTER, UNDERGROUND LAWN SPRINKLER REPAIRMAN, AND BOTH CARPET LAYERS WERE WITNESSES TO THIS BEHAVIOR. SHE ASKED ME TO LEAVE HER PROPERTY, ACCUSED ME OF STEALING HER PAINT (WHICH I DID NOT DO!), AND WAS VERY RUDE TO ME AND MY HELPER. IN MY EXPERT OPINION THIS HOUSE IS GOING TO NEED A LOT MORE WORK TO PASS A SALES INSPECTION - OPEN J-BOXES, LEAKY PIPES, STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT, & MUCH MORE. RESPECTFULLY, GREGG MATHIS HIRE-A-HUBBY

Greg was wonderful. He was prompt and thorough. We have hired him again for smaller projects and his work was again excellent.
Description of Work: Put down tile in our kitchen and bathroom. He also repaired some water damage on the outside of the house.
Horrible, someone from Angie's list tried to help me to mediate with him and he refused to mediate, at least one thing I was able to do was to get him give me receipts. He charged me for all things that he did not do, he gave me receipts for parts to install my dishwasher but they were dated,it was a month after my dishwasher was installed. He charged me for a door, he didn't put in a door, he charged me to install a handy cap toilet which he did not do, I ended up spending about 3000$ to fix things he screwed up, not the things that he did, personally did that I could fix but the things I had to hire somebody to fix, It was terrible. He did a lot of things to try to keep me intimidated, he charged me 7 gallons of paint to do my kitchen cabinet, he didn't use them here. I guess his price was fine, he was charging me by the hour and hours to pay for the materials but the worst things he charged me, labor, were the things I told him not to do. He did pretty of the nice cabinets although he didn't do everything he was supposed to do, the quality of the cabinets is fine, he did put counters and that was fine, there few things that he did that were acceptable, he was punctual, he came when he said he's gonna be here.

My records do not show this is a customer of mine and I do not recognize this as work I've done. I believe the customer has submitted this rating on the wrong company. There is another handyman locally by the name of Hubby for Hire that I've been mistaken for in the past. Please update this review accordingly. Thank you. Hire-a-Hubby

Gregg was great! His prices cannot be beat! Took him a day and half to do, which was fine as well as expected since he had to grout the tile. It looks great and we look forward to using Gregg again for our other jobs my hubby and I don't want to tackle. THanks!

REBUTTAL TO COMPANY RESPONSE: Opening comments: I find it highly unusual that he chose to say he met with me AND my pets. For the record, I have miniature dogs, primarily Chihuahuas, plus two medium-large birds. I do not ask anyone to care for my pets although my housekeeper voluntarily assists me when she is here. I explained to Mr. Mathis that I was NOT looking for someone to come, do a project and then leave but I was looking for a handyman who could do a few things now and then do odds and ends over time that my housekeeper and I can’t do. He indicated that he understood. I showed him a number of things I wanted done eventually but stated that most were very low priority. Now, I will go over his list point by point. In some cases, his item detail has been shortened where it didn’t make a difference to context: Item #1: Removed kitchen broken tile counter-tops from cabinets and replaced them with new handicap safe countertop. Response: He did this to my satisfaction although the only handicap issue was one corner on old counter-top. Work was for appearance, not handicap accessibility. Item #2: Built and installed new lower open storage cabinets in dining area and provided eight (8) denim lined wicker baskets Response: Cabinet was built to extend kitchen. Wicker baskets were provided however receipts for them were not included. Only issue with this was that cabinet blocked a duplex outlet. I requested that he bring electric cords for 2 power strips through a hole and onto the top where they would be fastened permanently. This cabinet was to hold a number of small appliances side by side which are rarely in operation at the same time. This would prevent a tangle of cords. When he did not follow these instructions, he brought the cords for the power strips through a hole and then left them hanging at the front of the cabinet. He did not fasten them at least out of sight and now I have an unsightly spiderweb of cords going down the front of my cabinet to loose power strips. Item #3: Assisted appliance delivery personnel with installation of new customer supplied disposal, faucet, dishwasher, stove and refrigerator in kitchen. Supplied hookup parts as needed. Cleaned up area in garage and moved existing refrigerator there. Response: Mr. Mathis did install disposal and faucet in kitchen. Metro Appliance delivered and installed stove, dishwasher and refrigerator and supplied necessary hookup parts. Mr. Mathis was asked to clean up the area in the garage so that existing refrigerator could be moved there but the actual moving was in my contract with Metro Appliance. Mr. Mathis provided me with a receipt from Ace Hardware for “dishwasher hookup parts” and labeled with my name. However, the cash register date on the receipt was a full month AFTER appliances were installed. Appliances were installed prior to Thanksgiving but date on receipt is 12/19/2012. Had he decided on his own to assist the Metro delivery crew, that was his business. Since I had paid Metro for the service, it would be double billing to also pay Mr. Mathis. Item #4: Supplied and installed vertical blinds in kitchen Response: Done satisfactorily Item #5: Extensive cleaning of existing cabinets. Removed shelf paper that was covered and stained with rodent, bird and dog feces/urine, along with cockroaches. Response: Mr. Mathis insisted he was going to rip out the existing shelf covering, install new shelf covering and then put a rubber netting on top of that. I told him NOT to do that. The existing finish was cleanable and well-glued. My housekeeper was waiting until the construction mess was completed before cleaning the shelves and then putting everything back. His statements about the condition of the shelves were untrue and apparently included to be incendiary. Pest control company eliminated short-term mouse problem and was/is coming every two weeks for cockroach issue. Birds and dogs do not have access to inside of cabinets. Since Mr. Mathis ignored my request to leave shelf paper alone, he ripped it out leaving a sticky mess that will need to be sanded smooth. ITEM #6: Sanded, prepped, and painted all cabinet areas, including laundry room. Response: No area was sanded or prepped. Although receipts show I was charged for 4 rolls of painters tape and 2 rolls of masking tape, only a couple of areas were taped so paint is on walls throughout. Item #7: Measured, ordered, supplied, painted and installed new cabinet doors, with new hinges. Customer did not want knobs as they interfere with her wheelchair. Customer also personally approved the paint chips that were presented prior to purchasing the paint. She remarked the blue she chose matched her favorite cup and seemed well pleased. Response: I told Mr. Mathis to leave off the knobs because he had gone so far over budget that I was not going to pay for anything else. The paint chip Mr. Mathis supplied with the receipts he finally provided did match the cabinets but this was the first time I had seen a paint chip. It does NOT match my “favorite cup” and I immediately told Mr. Mathis that I did not like the paint as soon as a small space was painted. Further, I had requested semi-gloss paint for the cabinets. He used satin paint which is harder to clean. Item #8: Customer sprinkled cockroach killing dust on all cabinets and counter tops on the day after they were all painted. Painter had to clean the entire again. Customer sprinkled the dust again the next day. We did not clean it up that time. Response: The “dust” (food grade non-toxic diatomaceous earth) was not on any painted area. Mr. Mathis notes that it was sprinkled the day AFTER painting so there should have been no need for painter to clean it. Item #9: Measured, ordered, supplied, painted and installed new drawer fronts, including repair of all existing drawers. Response: Satisfactory except for the use of satin instead of semi-gloss paint and they were not sanded. Item #10: Painted two doors including jamb and trim in laundry room and garage. Response: There is only one door in this area. The door leads from the laundry room to the garage. They painted both sides but it’s not two doors. Item #11: Supplied material, built and installed ramp from laundry room to garage. Response: Satisfactory Item #12: Supplied and installed new hot water heater to city code….Existing hot water tank was 31 years old and out of code. Response: Satisfactory Item #13: Disposed of existing hot water tank, junk in back yard and garage, and miscellaneous debris in three separate dump loads. Response: The old cabinet doors were in the garage. He took those plus the water tank without mentioning it to me. I had donated them and people were scheduled to come get them. He knew I had done the same thing with the old stove and dishwasher. I belong to a group dedicated to keeping things out of the landfill. I don’t know what junk he may have taken from the yard or if he took something else from the garage. I had to call the people back who were coming to get the water tank and cabinet doors. Item #14: Repaired, caulked, re-secured and painted front siding on exterior of house between two window frames. Response: Satisfactory Item #15: Removed 5’ section of wall between master bedroom closet and bathroom to allow easier wheelchair access. Supplied and installed trim as needed. Response: Section of wall was 3’ not 5’ as it should have been. Mr. Mathis told me that he was going to extend bathroom counter into the closet area because wall was being removed. This was to give me a vanity next to sink cabinet. Instead, I now have an expensive formica shelf in dark area of closet that not only blocks ability to hang clothes in that space but can’t be used as a vanity. None of the trim was finished. New wood trim has not been painted. Raw sheetrock at end of wall is pieced with gaps that will have to have extensive sheetrock work to look decent. Floor has a 6” wide area of bare concrete where wall had been. Item #16: Measured, ordered, supplied and installed two new counter-tops in closet and bathroom areas. Supplied and installed one new faucet, sink, including two shut off valves, along with one new toilet. Response: See above about “counter top in closet”. Charged $344 for the bathroom counter tops which includes formica shelf inside closet. There was NO new toilet installed. Sink, faucet, etc were satisfactory. Item #17: Repaired existing couch by raising it for easier handicap accessibility, as requested. Response: Mr. Mathis had replaced a duplex electrical outlet behind couch. Couch had to be moved. I told Mr. Mathis to be sure and put it back on blocks when done. There was one block on each corner of frame that allowed access from wheelchair. He properly replaced it on blocks on one end but the blocks on the other end were under springs, not frame. This meant that the sofa was lower on one side and sinking as springs were compressed. I called and asked him to stop by when he was in the area and put the blocks under the frame before couch warped. He told me he was going to build a permanent frame under couch. I told him no, that it just needed to be back on blocks as it was before he moved it. I called him a day or two later and told him it would not be necessary to come by because my son had put the couch back on blocks correctly. Again, he insisted he was going to build a frame under couch. He came by to adjust drain on new bathroom sink since it would not drain. I came out of kitchen to find that he had my couch upside down and was screwing two 6’ pieces of 2x4’s on the bottom of the sofa and attached to existing blocks. This took a maximum of 30 minutes and two boards. At $25/hour plus materials, he charged me $50 for a job that he was told NOT to do and was his fault to start with.
Description of Work: I was looking for a handyman who could be called upon to help do maintenance around my house. I am a 63 yr old widow and physically disabled. Among the things he did was to remove a short wall separating my master bathroom from the walk in closet. I had a cabinet with open storage underneath installed in the dining are to enlarge my kitchen and make it easier to navigate in my wheel chair. I had a ramp built from the laundry room into my garage. He told me my water heater was 31 years old so he needed to replace it with a new one, In a day or two, I will upload pictures I took. They will include both the good and the bad. Pros: 1. Quality of work: what you would expect from a general handyman rather than hiring a plumber, cabinet-maker, electrician, etc. 2. Punctuality: showed up when he said he would 3. Responsiveness: Responded quickly if situation warranted 4. Professionalism: Rather than provide written estimates, Gregg would just give oral quotes or unlabeled numbers scrawled on a scrap of paper. Unfortunately he sometimes changed the amount later and you had no proof of what he had quoted. Cons: Since quoted prices were oral, he would later change them when confronted. ie, I was measuring the open cabinet for containers to be used to organize contents on shelves. He came in with 6 large lined wicker baskets. He told me that they were just under $16.00 each. This would have been roughly $100 which was reasonable. Later, when I tried to discuss expenditures for the work, the price of the baskets changed, during the course of one conversation, from $400 for the 6 baskets to $600 for the same 6 baskets. I would never have agreed to $100 each for wicker baskets. I told him that we were over budget and the amount left I had left to spend was $2000. He got angry and told me that he needed $3500 to cover the cabinet doors he had ordered and painted for me and also for the painting technique he kept calling faux finish. I had difficulty getting him to tell me just what kind of faux finish he was talking about since I have done many of types of faux finishes. What he finally described for me was a very simple technique called antiquing. Since half of the $3500 was to cover the faux finish and knobs on the cabinet doors, I decided I couldn't afford it and asked for a refund of that amount. He came over throwing a total fit about how he had done my job for free, his painter had made more money working here for 2 days than he did for the entire job, that anyone else would have paid $10,000 for a similar job and that there would be no refund. I had specified that I had wanted semi-gloss paint on the kitchen cabinets. He used satin finish paint without sanding between the two coats so the finish looks flat and is not smooth to the touch. He had made a point of telling me that he refused to use cheap paint like you got at Lowes and Home Depot and purchased paint elsewhere, yet I found Lowes stickers on the cans. He didn’t bring paint chips like he had done with the formica. The top cabinets were to be black but I wanted blue for the bottom. Rather than bring blue paint chips, he just wanted me to look at his clothes and around the room and point out the color blue I wanted. He kept saying that I wanted Thunder Blue. I had no idea what Thunder Blue was. When he dropped off the family friend who was going to paint the cabinets, he left blue paint. As soon as she started painting, I called him and told him I didn’t like the color. It was a very bright blue and apparently was the color for a local sports team. It clashed in my kitchen. He told me I would get used to it and it was Thunder Blue. When I called him and told him the painter had dripped paint all over the place and had not used tape so there was paint on the walls as well. He told me it would come off. I got it off my counters, appliances and other things but haven’t gotten it off the walls. He said I needed a new water heater because the date on mine showed it to be 31 years I also believe the . It was working fine but I was trying to replace things now to keep down repairs later. He installed a water heater. I have repeatedly asked for the paper and specs on the water heater which he keeps trying to talk me out of. However, a friend and I checked it and found that it has the date "2006" on it. There is a peeling sticker on it as well. I believe that the water heater possibly is the same one that was already there or else he charged me for a used one. I also believe the "Thunder Blue" paint may have been some paint he had and was trying to get rid of. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, we qualified for a senior assistance program designed to help us stay in our home instead of going to assisted living or nursing home. When I received the life insurance money, I was dropped from the program. To get back on it after the life insurance funds were gone, I had to provide documentation showing that I had used the money appropriately. I had been telling Gregg all along that I was going to need a statement and copies of the documents and receipts on the appliances. When I hired Gregg, he said he charged $25/hour for labor and that I would pay for materials. He kept ignoring me when I asked for a statement. Finally I sent him an email requesting a statement for the labor charges plus receipts for the materials. After 3 emails, he called me screaming mad. He was extremely angry and kept saying that he had worked for free. He also said that I only wanted the receipts to prove that he was cheating me. Then he angrily told me he was coming over and he was going to finish the project and I was going to pay him for it. I again asked him for documentation on my water heater. I wanted a receipt plus the other documents that normally come with a new appliance. He has refused to provide me with this. I have told him not to come onto my property again. He can mail the receipts and statement but somehow I don't think he will provide these without legal action. There are a number of places in my dealings with him where I felt that he was pushing me to pay for materials that he may have already had, such as the water heater and blue paint. I have had workmen offer to give me a discount if I would use materials they already had. I would agree since it was helping both of us. I realize this review is lengthy. Since I am a disabled senior citizen, it’s not unusual for a workman to try to take advantage. Gregg started out great and I initially wrote a great review for him. However as he continued to work for me, it did seem that all was not right. Therefore I felt I needed to edit my review. He seems to be able to do a pretty good job but he would need to be more closely supervised from the beginning than I could do from a wheelchair.

I met (Member name removed) in October 2012 at her home, along with her five dogs and two birds. Repaired existing couch by raising it for easier handicap accessibility, as requested. 18. Arranged for lawn service to mow one foot high weeds & grass in front & back yard. 19. Numerous service calls during five month period for various things that were not on my scope of work, ie: adjusting garage door sensors so customer could get out for doctor appointments and repairing leaking plumbing fixtures that were eventually replaced. 20. All new large & small appliance brochures were left in a wicker basket on right side of shelves, as explained to customer. 21. All material purchased for these projects were brand new, in the box, and nothing provided was previously used in any way. 22. Painter reported customer passed out and fell to floor near the end of the project, whom she assisted and stayed with for a couple of hours until she felt better. Gregg Mathis

He was a very, very nice guy but we didn't think he was very professional. He called and gave us a price. My husband wanted something in writing like an invoice. He sent us an email that quoted the price. It just had us a dollar amount and didn't tell us what he was going to do so we didn't go with them. We ended up paying quite a bit more but we think it worked out better because we didn't have the details of the estimate. His price was a lot cheaper than what we paid. His punctuality was real good. We would probably not use him in the future.

It was a fine experience. Please see previous comments.
Description of Work: Gregg painted my restaurant. There were a lot of things on the walls and I had not one problem. He installed a scratch guard, also. He was on time and did everything he said he'd do for the price he said he'd do it for. Don't figure you can ask for much more than that (unless you're as crazy as Michelle Bachman).

I called Greg early (Hubby for Hire) he returned my call an hour later. Anyway, I spoke with him on the phone told him about our problem; he seemed very nice on the phone said he would be over within the hour to look at the problem. Within the hour Greg arrived and he looked at the range and the cabinet immediately he explained to me and my husband what he would have to do. He told us the price he would charge and we agreed, Greg also explained about the countertop that my husband and son in law had previously chipped... that he could, if we wanted him to, order countertop and replace the damaged one that was done by my son in law and husband. He called and quoted us the costs of replacement and the cost of his charge which was hardly anything. Greg installed my range moved the cabinet over and hooked up my icemaker for me. Greg did all this in record time of approximately 3 hours... as far as I am concerned... Greg saved our marriage nah,,, he just got my husband out of the dog house and back in good graces with me; a NOW happy wife! Now if Greg could only come back and program the oven and range clock for us ... The overall cost was around $200.00 well worth it.
Description of Work: We needed to move our kitchen counter over 2 inches so our new stove could fit and we needed repair on our countertops. We also needed the hookup completed to our refrigerator for the icemaker.

Greg was prompt , he did what we wanted him to do and did it in a timely manner We were impressed with his honesty enough to allow he and his helper Bobby to open up our house and work one day without us here.We had to reschedule because of an emergency health issue and he promptly rescheduled us. We are pleased with the work and we are planing on hireing him again for some more work. We very much liked him and also his helper Bobby. He is not cheap on price if that is your primary concern, but he charges a fair price. I think you can trust his word and he will do what he tells you he will do and you can count on him showing up when he says he will.
Description of Work: Gregg & Bobby Removed popcorn ceiling from the kitchen/dineing room area, Textured & Painted both areas. Installed crown molding and chair rail molding in both areas. They installed ceramic tile floors in main bath & master bath floors. Removed and Installed a new toilet in the main bath. Replaced shut off valves in main bath. Installed a new main bath door. Repaired & patched a crack in liveing room ceiling He also painted it. Repaired kitchen sink back splash grout. Wonderfull job on the live rm ceiling , can't even tell it is there.

He picked up and paid for the two storm doors (I selected them) but didn't pass on the receipts to me so that I could get the tax credit. He was somewhat insulting toward me. I had asked him about replacing a shower faucet and he repeatedly told me that "this isn't like replacing a light bulb". His work was good; I just didn't like his attitude.
Description of Work: He installed two storm doors and a shower door.

He was great, I'd recommend him to anyone. He comes out here and does the job. He'll take off on the weekends, but who doesn't? He was hindered by the rain a little bit, but he was great. I was satisfied with everything - he listens and does the job. His price was better than the other bids I had.
Description of Work: Hire A Hubby just finished painting my house and replacing some rotten wood on my house as well as caulking cracks.

He didn't charge me an arm and a leg. I hardly knew that he was here; he came in and the wall matches the rest of the wall perfectly. You can't tell where he patched and he did everything great. I am going to use him again to paint my house.
Description of Work: I used Hire A Hubby because I had a leak in a water line in the wall and it had been cut. He came out and repaired the hole and painted the wall.

Greg came recommended by a friend and did a fantastic job. He's honest, he doesn't overcharge, he's polite and he's now in my phone's contact list. I will use him in the future!
Description of Work: I had an air conditioner leak that ruined my dining room ceiling (drywall, paint, etc.). Greg redid the drywall work, he did the fancy swirling on my ceilings to match my kitchen and repainted my dining room ceiling.

Greg Mathis has done a lot of work for me at my rental properties and at my house. I keep using him because he is reliable and reasonable with his prices. When I have trouble with rental properties he is always there right away to fix things.
Description of Work: Hire A Hubby owner Greg Mathis prepped a rental house of mine for new tenants. He did minor repairs, replaced some siding and prepared it for painting. He hired the painters and helped them paint it. He charges about $20 an hour. This job was $2,500.
