A single-member LLC with no other employees and therefore the type of general handyman work pursued is what the normal homeowner might do if they had the time and the capability to do it themselves. As a handyman, I am not required to have a contractor's license by the State of Texas, but I do carry $1MM in general liability insurance and a surety bond to cover business service performance. I do not use subcontractors as a general rule, and if approached to do a job that is not within my capabilities, I will refer the client to a competent contractor with the required skills. I do not charge trip mileage per se, but charge $54 for the first hour of service and $42 per hour thereafter. I do not charge for my time or mileage to make material pickup, nor do I require customers to make a deposit to cover material purchases for their project. I invoice the customer for the cost of the project (labor and material) upon completion of the project. I do not mark up material to the customer, but invoice them only for the the actual cost of materials, including tax (no tax on labor). Angie's list members receive a 10% discount on labor costs. Payment is accepted as cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. I make free estimates and the written estimate is a not-to-exceed cost. I do my best to estimate as accurately as possible, but the actual invoice will never be higher than the estimate (unless there are very unusual circumstances that are encountered during the project and only if both parties agree to the higher cost in writing), but I will reduce the actual cost versus the estimate if the project comes in under estimated cost. My goal is 100% customer satisfaction so that the customer will keep me in mind for all their handyman needs in the future.
